The Public Works Department will be implementing modifications to the Snow and Ice Management Plan for the 2011-2012 Season. The biggest change this year will be the responsibility of sidewalk clearing. The goal was to make sure sidewalks with the highest impact for safe travel were prioritized. After reviewing options and collaborating with our school district leadership, the Village decided to focus efforts on Village-owned properties, Towne Center, major corridors (Irving Park Road, York Road and Grand Avenue), and school zones. As a result, the new sidewalk routes have eliminated cost of the residential clearing and have been reduced to a manageable 11 miles of sidewalk.

Due to this change, many residents who have historically benefitted from the Village clearing the sidewalk along their property are now asked to assume this responsibility and clear the sidewalks in front of their homes. Maps of the new routes can be found on the website, www.bensenville.il.us under the Departments / Public Works / Snow and Ice Removal. Sidewalks will now be cleared after 3 inches of accumulation to make safer passage for students, commuters, and residents. Previously sidewalks were cleared after 4 inches of accumulation. Residents should also be aware that due to liability issues the Village will no longer be clearing driveway aprons for Village residents.

Senior Citizens Spread Holiday Cheer

Electronic Recycling

Beginning January 1, Illinois has banned electronics from landfills.

Banned items include: computers, computer monitors, printers, TVs, keyboards, faxes, mp3 and DVD players and DVRs. These items must be recycled by a registered collector. There is a drop-off location at the Wood Dale Public Works Utilities Office, 269 Irving Park Road. They accept items the first and third Mondays of the month, from noon until 3 p.m.

When You Wish...Senior Dreams Can Come True Did you ever dream about a sleigh ride in the snow on a moonlit night?

Maybe you have always wanted to attend a dress rehearsal of the opera?

Perhaps tickets behind third base at a Cubs or Sox game? Or do you wish you could take a sculpture class or learn how to make homemade pasta?

Mayor Soto’s Senior Advisory Council has a new program, Golden Wishes, that will work to make the dreams of Bensenville seniors or disabled residents come true. Simply fill out an application, or fill one out for a friend, and the Advisory Council will announce winners each quarter.

Golden Wishes request forms are available at the Bensenville Community Library, all Senior Club luncheons, Bridgeway and Castle Towers, the front desk at Village Hall and on the Village website, www.bensenville.il.us.

Residents can apply for College Grants to Robert Morris

In partnership with the Village of Bensenville, Robert Morris University is pleased to offer an economic development grant to residents of Bensenville. Residents attending the RMU Bensenville campus, located at Route 83 and Thorndale, may receive an annual grant up to $3000 toward a bachelor degree. All Clear for Take-Off Airport Compatibility Study Open House January 11 The Village of Bensenville invites and encourages residents and business owners to attend an open house to help guide our Airport Compatibility Study and play a part in deciding Bensenville’s future. The Village received a planning grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to study the effects and benefits of the O’Hare Modernization Program. Your thoughts are critical to help set the framework for our future development.

Fenton High School Named to “Top High Schools in America” List Fenton Community High School has been recognized as one of the “Top High Schools in America” by the Washington Post. The list, compiled by The Post’s Jay Mathews, uses a measure he calls, the “Challenge Index” to measure how effectively high schools prepare students for college. Mathews has been rating Washington-area high schools since 1998 but this year he rated over 27,000 high schools in the United States with just 2,050 schools making the cut. Only 86 Illinois high schools are named.

FHS Welcomes Italian Students from Sicily

On Friday, November 18, Fenton welcomed eight students from Cefalù, Sicily.

The foreign exchange program was organized by Sister Cities and made possible through the support of the Village of Bensenville, the City of Wood Dale, Gullo International Development Corporation and Fenton High School staff. Fenton guidance counselor, Ms. Ziemianin-Garrett coordinated the Fenton program.

For her efforts, she received a Board Salute from the District 100 Board of Education. The Italian students lived with Fenton host families, shadowed the students during the school day, and had the opportunity to visit many popular Chicago sites. In addition, the Italian students spent Thanksgiving with their host families.

Academic Team Honors For the first time in school history, the Fenton High School Academic Team is ranked in the Top 100 Teams according to hsquizbowl. org, an online quizbowl resource center. The site maintains an ongoing season ranking of all the academic teams in the United States based on tournament results.

High School Academic Teams compete in the Scholastic Bowl, a statewide contest in which two teams compete by answering questions related to a variety of topics including literature, math, science, history, art, music, and sports. Participants buzz in to answer questions and then work as a team to collectively solve challenges.

Music Booster Fundraiser The FHS Music Booster’s annual fundraiser, Spaghetti with a Song, is scheduled for Sunday, February 19 from 1-4 p.m. at Fenton Community High School. The event includes a meal, entertainment and the opportunity to bid on a variety of raffle baskets. All proceeds benefit the FHS Music Booster’s Senior Scholarship Fund and other music related needs. Every Friday morning at 11 a.m., Vineeta Shivde steps into the world of middle school for an hour. Her regular job at a hospital lab is worlds away from her work with students in the middle school.

Mrs. Shivde’s background helps her feel at home in Mr. Schneider’s 6th grade science classroom. “Kids in 6th grade want your attention and they want it right now – she is an extra pair of hands to help provide that,” Mr. Schneider said.

Project CARE needs volunteers for all schools right now. Volunteers are needed primarily to help struggling students with reading and math.

“Students look forward to the mentors coming and working with them. Besides the academic support, mentors provide positive adult role models for our students, and the volunteers and students do form a bond. It’s a win-win situation for the student and adult,” said Bob Pape, Blackhawk Middle School Principal.

Ecolab receives Friend of Education Award

Ecolab was presented with the 2011 Freinds of Education Award by the Bensenville Education Association for the company’s support of District 2’s staff, students and mission.

Ecolab sponsors an education grant program that has provided teachers in every school in District 2 with technology and other classroom equipment.

Construction Update When will the additions at Tioga and Johnson schools be completed?

Both additions are expected to be ready for move in before the start of school in August 2012.

Will there be school boundary changes?

After analyzing enrollment data, it appears there will be no need for any major boundary changes. To equalize enrollment, some students currently attending Tioga and Chippewa schools will move to Johnson School in August 2012. Generally, students involved in changing schools are those who are attending Tioga and Chippewa because there was not enough space at their home school of Johnson or Mohawk when they enrolled in the District. There will also be consideration given to 4th and 5th graders whose parents want them to stay with the same student population before moving to middle school.

When will Chippewa School move into Tioga?

Chippewa School will move into Tioga for the start of school in August 2012.

When will Mohawk School move?

The renovation of the existing building at Johnson needs to be complete before there is enough room for all the students from Mohawk. Renovation begins as soon as school is out in May 2012, and will take a minimum of four months to complete.

Will there be any opportunities for the community to see the new schools or commemorate the closing of Chippewa?

Plans are forming for an end-of-year celebration at Chippewa School and to have a community reunion before the school is closed permanently.

When construction is complete, there will be community open houses at both schools.

New Services for Vision Impaired Readers

With financial assistance from the Senior Citizens Advisory Council, the Library recently obtained several new aids for low vision viewers. Housed at the reference desk are two RUBY Handheld Video Magnifiers. These full color, high brightness, portable personal video magnifiers can be used for a multitude of purposes, including enlarging prescription bottle labels or combing through the small font of a phone book. The Library also obtained a SARA CE Scanning and Reading Appliance. With built-in Braille support, this appliance turns the text on a printed page into human sounding speech.

Lastly, the Library acquired an ONYX large scale magnifier. The ONYX can help low vision viewers with arduous tasks such as reading the small font on legal documents or reading a letter from an old friend. With these new tools the Library renews its commitment to serving everyone in the community.

Meet Your Library Trustees: Kim Glomp

Kim Glomp has served on the Library Board since 2007, when she was appointed to fill a vacancy. As Bensenville has been home her whole life, Kim was an active participant in community activities, and the Library has always one of her favorite spots for she and her daughters to spend time; both girls were summer volunteers in fact. Glomp’s teaching experience brings a love for learning to the Library Board table, and her favorite thing about the Library is everything it does for the kids and families in the community.

Storytimes at the Library

The Library offers a variety of storytime options throughout the year. Kids 36 months or younger are invited to join Miss Bonnie on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. for Stories for the Very a Young, a special storytime for our youngest readers. Kids between the ages of three and five can join Miss Holly as she shares her favorite stories, songs and crafts during Stories for Fun on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Children between the ages of 12 and 36 months are invited to participate in our music and movement program, Toddler Jams, on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Participants will learn rhythm and movement through song and music. Space is limited for all storytimes and registration is required to attend. To register please contact the Library at (630) 766-4642
