VILLAGE OF BENSENVILLE MUSIC IN THE PARK 2019 Everyone’s favorite and free family summer concert series, Music in the Park, begins June 12th and has something to offer for all musical tastes.

Bensenville restaurants will sell dinner and dessert items so families can have dinner in the park prior to the concert. Each concert night will also include a classic car night and there is always a 50/50 split the pot raffle that benefits our community. 2019 FOURTH OF JULY PARADE & LIBERTYFEST Bensenville’s annual 4th of July festivities are full of family fun and great times for everyone. The celebration kicks off with “the most patriotic 4th of July parade route in America” beginning in downtown Bensenville at 10:00 am. Temporary street signs will be hung along the parade route in honor of Major General Nathanael Greene, York Town, and Thomas Jefferson.

From noon – 4:00 pm there will be free public skate at the Edge Ice Arena, 735 E. Jefferson Street and free public swimming at Water’s Edge, 545 John Street. Live music will be provided by Alternative Method Band at 4:30 pm and Libido Funk Circus at 7:30 pm. The fireworks show will be launched from the Public Works Facility at 9:30 pm. Parking will be available in and around Redmond Park with additional parking located off of Jefferson, George Street and on nearby side streets that allow parking. REGISTER FOR THE SENIOR AND DISABLED GRASS CUTTING PROGRAM Village President Frank DeSimone and the Village Board is pleased to announce the return of the Senior and Disabled Grass Cutting Program. The program has been slightly redesigned to help those in our community who need assistance obtaining low cost grass cutting on their property. The Village will hire independent contractors and provide discounted rates for common grass cutting services.

The Village will also subsidize fifty percent (50%) of the cost. This year, we have simplified the program by combining all the services into one package; and we have added a fall cleanup to the program. The weekly cost to each household is $12.50 per cut. COP ON ROOFTOP FRIDAY, MAY 17TH

Stop by the Bensenville Dunkin’ Donuts located at 1004 W. Irving Park Road to meet a Bensenville Police Officer, raise money towards Special Olympics and participate in free donut giveaways, raffles and more! If you’re lucky, you may even find Village President Frank DeSimone on the roof!

The 17th Annual Dunkin’ Cop on Rooftop event will take place on Friday, May 17th from 5:00 am until 12:00 pm. During this fundraiser, hundreds of local law enforcement officers will stake out Dunkin’ rooftops to heighten awareness and raise money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois. At last year’s event the Village of Bensenville helped raise over $1,900.00 and the goal is to raise even more this year.

SUMMER IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

The Village’s estimated $9.4 million Capital Investment Program (CIP) for 2019 includes a wide variety of projects including roadways, underground utilities, streetlights, aesthetics, bike paths as well as sidewalks. The Village has secured various sources of federal funding in the amount of $3.55 million to offset the expenses. As part of the 2019 construction season, the Village plans to improve approximately four miles of roadways; nearly 5,000 feet of new water main; 7,000 feet of sanitary sewer rehabilitation; 80 new residential streetlights and approximately 50,000 square feet of sidewalk.

Village staff anticipate the construction season to begin as early as April and expect it to last until the end of November. As is with every construction season, traffic may be disrupted in and around the construction sites.

While the contractors will do their best to mitigate disturbances, typical construction impacts can be expected including dust and noise. One major roadway paving project will take place along York Road between Grand Avenue and Green Street this spring. During summer and fall months, the Village will also undertake a significant Downtown Streetscape enhancement project. VEHICLE STICKER DEADLINE IS JUNE 30TH All vehicles registered or housed in the Village of Bensenville must purchase and display a vehicle sticker. Buy online and save $2.00 for a regular passenger sticker.

Vehicle stickers must be purchased by June 30th. New residents and new vehicle purchases do not need to pay a penalty as long as the sticker is purchased within 30 days of move-in date, or the date the new vehicle was purchased.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING PROGRAM BEGINS MAY 11TH

Electronics recycling is available to Bensenville residents through Addison Township. TVs and CRT monitors are accepted at no charge. Electronics recycling takes place the second Saturday of the month (April through November) from 8 am – noon.

BULK WASTE PICK UP REMINDER

While doing your spring cleaning, please remember what can and cannot be accepted on regular trash collection days. Republic Services which is the Village’s waste management agency, offers a variety of services to Bensenville residents. These services include bulk waste pick up and appliance recycling. Items that do not fit in your trash container such as large furniture, appliances, carpet, mattresses, refrigerators and washing machines can be picked up by completing a service request online or over the phone. COMMUNITY YARD SALE | JUNE 6 - 9

Residents are encouraged to clean up and cash in by holding household yard sales the extended weekend of Thursday, June 6 through Sunday, June 9. The more yard sales held, the more buyers come to our community.

Residents are required to complete a yard sale application and obtain a free yard sale permit from Village Hall at the Community and Economic Development Counter. The deadline to turn in your yard sale permit is Friday, May 31st. A list of participating addresses will be posted on the Village website and Facebook page the week of the event. Similar to borrowing a book, you borrow the seeds with the intention of harvesting seeds from the crop to return to the library for future lending. What seeds do you offer? All of the seeds for our inaugural year have been generously donated by Pioneer Garden & Feed in Villa Park. All seeds offered are labeled as EASY to grow and can be directly sown in your garden or container outside after last frost. How do I borrow seeds? With your Bensenville Community Public Library card, you may borrow up to five packets consisting of no more than two of each variety of seed.

Each packet contains enough seeds to grow 3-5 plants.

Last December, AP College Board visited Fenton Administration to inform them that they had been awarded the AP Honor Roll award. Fenton was one of 373 schools across the United States and Canada who earned this designation. This award is given to school districts that meet certain requirements. To receive the Honor Roll status, Fenton had to, since 2016, increase the number of students participating in AP courses while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP.

What wasn’t shared with the community until March 20th was Fenton High School District 100 was named a nationwide leader for increasing access to Advanced Placement (AP) courses and scores on AP exams by the board that administers the tests. Fenton hosted an all-school assembly and brought students, staff, administrators, local and regional elected officials together to share in the recognition. Special guests who spoke were Deputy Governor for Education Jesse Ruiz and U.S. Congressman Mike Quigley.

The award, given to only three school districts nationwide –large, medium and small – means the school district has increased access to AP classes for students of color and low income and has also increased the number of students who pass AP exams.

“This is a celebration of equity and determination,” said Superintendent James Ongtengco. “It shows that students believe in themselves, challenge themselves, work hard and trust teachers to guide them through the process,” he said.

More than a third of students are enrolled in at least one of the 24 AP courses offered at Fenton. The number of students who took AP exams grew from 253 to 330 in three years, or 30%. This is despite changing demographics: 51 percent of students are low-income; there’s growing diversity and an increase in the number of students whose primary language is not English. The percentage of AP students who are African American and Latino grew from 40% to 49% over three years. And, the percentage of African Americans and Latino students who received a 3 or more on an AP test grew from 57% to 61% in three years.

The mission at Fenton to ensure students of all backgrounds have equal access to the school’s AP courses began five years ago when the District partnered with Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS). EOS helped Fenton identify students who showed promise and commitment – focusing on lowincome and students of color – and who had the potential but were missing out on AP classes. Fenton conducted a survey of students measuring such things as interest in upper level courses, education goals, learning mindset and career interests, and combined that with an analysis of test scores to develop a baseball card of sorts on students.

“We received data that challenged some of our practices and beliefs,” said Kate Ward, Division Leader, English, Social Studies, World Languages, ESL. Students were also asked to identify a trusted adult in a teacher, coach or administrator.

Those trusted adults then sought out students to talk about the process and answer any questions.

The result is that many more students, including students of color and low-income are now taking AP classes, excelling and passing the AP test. The fear was that this push would water down the curriculum but just the opposite happened.

“Our student rose to the challenge and in fact this program raised the bar and made our entire curriculum more rigorous,” said Fenton Principal/Associate Superintendent Jovan Lazarevic.

Clint Porter, a veteran AP teacher, said there used to be about 15 students in his AP Calculus class and now there are about 80. “There were students who were on the sidelines; they didn’t see themselves in an AP class. But they just needed an extra nudge,” said Porter.

“It’s amazing to have a national award validate and affirm the hard work that Fenton is doing,” said Board President Paul Wedemann.

FENTON BRINGS SPARKLE TO NEW FRONT ENTRANCE SIGN Bison Pride continues to shine at Fenton.

The installation of the new sign in the entrance is just another piece of the brand. The inspiration behind the metal came from Mr. Ongtengco who said, “When individuals - students, parents, and community members - walk through our doors we want them to see beautiful artwork that communicates the message that students are thriving at Fenton High School. The new artwork symbolizes strength, beauty and unity.”

It was designed Fenton Bison Country by Mrs. JoAnna Rieger. Several designs were sketched up and voted on by administration and teachers. Fenton’s new sign is a culmination of many hands, but was ultimately the vision of Mr. Ontengco. I was privileged to help get the ball rolling and ensure that it did not stop. Students and staff voted on an initial concept. The results of that vote showed the desire to have a sign with a bison on it and the words, Fenton Bison Country. This text is timeless and embraces all that unites our diverse herd:

Through these academic initiatives, Fenton was able to improve academic scores and was recognized as AP Honor Roll Recipient and AP College Board’s District of the Year.

She was instrumental in bringing both professional and personal history to the Strategic Plan process in 2018.

Laura Wassinger served on Fenton’s Board of Education from 2011 - 2019. She and husband grew up in Bensenville and have three children who are graduates of Fenton and has helped weave parts from the previous plan into our new road map for success. Laura has been instrumental in working and collaborating with current board members as they make decisions that result in the best outcomes for students.

Laura knows that it takes both communities to support Fenton students and has been fully committed to help Fenton create successful, passionate learners and develop relationships that will enhance their education. For her dedication and support, as well as the countless volunteer hours as a board member we thank Laura for her time on the board.

She watched over the construction of the $13 million addition and reconstruction of Fenton in 2016, bringing higher security and safety standards to Fenton, while ensuring taxpayers would see no increase in property taxes.

She had shown fiscal responsibility and sustainability while on negotiation committees in the past and eagerly filled in on the committee, where the voice of experience was

The Bensenville Park District’s Under the Sun Summer Camps offer a noncompetitive atmosphere where youngsters can socially interact and participate in a variety of activities. Children 6-10 can enjoy Adventure Camp, Sports Camp, Discovery Camp, or new this year Forester Camp.

Teens 11-15 can take advantage of our Teen Leadership camp where responsibility, respect, and cooperation are emphasized; while enjoying a variety of activities and their own exclusive field trips. This fall, Bensenville School District 2 was named on of just 15 recipients of the U.S. Department of Education’s Full Service Community School grant for $2.5 million.

The Full Service Grant’s goals dovetailed nicely with those of a $3 million 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant the District recently received from the Illinois State Board of Education. The Full Service grant’s objectives focus on parent education, targeted professional development for teachers, after-school programming, and improving mental health supports. Programming funded by the 21st Century grant focuses on such topics as academic enrichment, arts integration, technology, social-emotional learning, college and career readiness, and parent and family programming.

As District 2 moves towards implementation of the Full Service Grant, improved services are already taking place. For example, the District’s teacher home visit initiative, which received an Award of Excellence in the Illinois State Board of Education’s 2018 Those Who Excel awards program, will be expanded and improved through the appointment of a Lead Home Visit Teacher. Afterschool programming that addresses the cultural diversity of the community is also being developed, and teachers are receiving customized professional development in the areas of arts integration, cultural competency, and social emotional learning.

Christy Poli, a clinical social worker and the coordinator of District 2’s birth-to-3 program, is District 2’s Full Service Grant project director, and is now working to implement the grant’s objectives.

“The grant allows us to develop specific programing not just for students, but for families as well,” Poli said. “Research shows that when families are involved in their children’s education, they are much more likely to succeed in school. Transportation, parent education, and teacher home visits are a just a few strategies outlined in the grant that will help create a stronger home-to-school connection, ultimately leading to academic success.”

PEACE CIRCLES AND MINDFUL PRACTICES EXPAND DISTRICT 2’S COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING.

Social emotional learning (SEL) is an important part of every student’s education, and it is being emphasized in classrooms across the District through two new programs.

Peace Circles Now common sites at both Tioga and W.A. Johnson Schools, peace circles help students holistically address conflicts and solve problems as they take turns speaking in a group effort to determine what happened, why it happened, and how it can be fixed. Peace circles emphasize healing and learning through a collective group process, and they aim to repair harm done and assign responsibility by talking through problems.

Mindful Practices District 2 is partnering with Mindful Practices to offer a new SEL program that helps students and teachers self-regulate and “keep their cool” in order to be more focused and ready to learn during the school day. Mindful Practices believes relaxed teachers teach better and relaxed students learn better.

Throughout the year, elementary classroom teachers experience movement and SEL activities alongside their students with the guidance of a Mindful Practices SEL coach. These weekly 25-minute in-class coaching and modeling sessions focus on mindfulness and SEL activities that not only to get students moving and breathing, but also strengthen their self-awareness, self-regulation, and interpersonal skills.

Educators and learners alike benefit from activities designed to bring all members of the classroom into community, creating a safe, equitable learning environment. Through moving, stretching and breathing, each participant feels empowered to be present and ready to learn.

Doing laundry is most likely part of your every day routine. But did you know how important taking care of your clothes dryer is to the safety of your home? With a few simple safety tips you can help prevent a clothes dryer fire.

KKK Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional.

AND DON’T FOrGET...

KKK Do not use the dryer without a lint filter.

KKK Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Remove lint that has collected around the drum.

Dryers should be properly grounded.

KKK Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to sustain proper air flow and drying time.

Check the outdoor vent flap to make sure it is not covered by snow.

KKK Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted and the outdoor vent flap will open when the dryer is operating. Once a year, or more often if you notice that it is taking longer than normal for your clothes to dry, clean lint out of the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.

Keep the area around your dryer clear of things that can burn, like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc.

Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solvents should be laid outside to dry, then can be washed and dried as usual.

KKK Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks.

KKK Make sure the right plug and outlet are used and that the machine is connected properly.

KKK Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.

KKK Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed.
