Santa Claus will be taking photos with our young visitors as they express their Christmas wishes. The holiday train will take children of all ages around Downtown Bensenville. Live Reindeer, free movies, ice skaters and holiday music will entertain us and FREE hot dogs, sweets and hot chocolate will keep guests warm and toasty. The Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa and special guests will be held at 6:00 PM.

BENSENVILLE TOY & COAT DRIVE The holidays should be a festive time filled with great joy. Unfortunately, many families struggle to pay bills and put food on the table. Putting gifts under the tree is a luxury that cannot be met. The Village intends to lessen these struggles for Bensenville families through two collections starting in early November.

The Village Toy and & Food Drive seeks donations of new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items. Cash contributions are needed and welcomed. The goal is that every child receive a new toy, new book and a stocking.

The Bensenville Rotary Club sponsors the Coat Drive collecting new and gently worn adult and child-sized cold weather coats. New scarfs, hats and mittens are also needed to guard against the cold weather.

Star of Giving Any donation of $10 or more in support of the Bensenville Toy Drive receives a Star of Giving.

This ornamental star will be hung on our community Holiday Tree with your name on it.

Donations can be made at Village Hall. For more information call 630.594.1010.

SENIOR CITIZEN CLUB HOLIDAY PARTY Bensenville residents aged 55 and over are invited to enjoy a holiday meal and live entertainment on Sunday, December 4 at 1 PM at Monty’s Banquet Hall, 703 South York Road. 2ND ANNUAL HOLIDAY HOME DECORATING CONTEST Gather all your holiday lights, reindeer, wreaths, and decorations, for the second annual holiday home decorating contest.

Nominate your home or business by emailing the property address, name, email or phone, and picture (if possible) to holidaycontest@bensenville.il.us. NOMINATION PERIOD IS NOW THROUGH DECEMBER 25,2016. Submitted properties will be posted to the Village’s Facebook page. Awards will be given to the best decorated single family home both north and south of Irving Park Road, the best multi-family home, and the best business.

Winners will be announced at a Village Board meeting and posted to the Village’s website at www.bensenville.il.us 1. Entries must be received via email by 5pm on December 25, 2016.

2. Contest is for exterior decorations only, including windows decorations visible from the exterior.

When you shop locally, you have an opportunity to reinvest in the community as well as to ensure the economic and cultural health of the place where you have put down roots.

This last phase of the project involves the addition of travel lanes both east and west bound and pedestrian accommodations. Once complete it will improve the area for local residents, businesses and all the traffic traveling through this corridor daily, the project is scheduled to be complete in the Fall of 2017.

AN ARMY FOR ETERNITY: CHINA’S TERRACOTTA WARRIORS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13 @ 2:00 PM

China’s First Emperor, Qin Shihuang, planned to spend his afterlife buried in a palatial tomb surrounded by all his worldly treasures. To guard his mausoleum, he commissioned an army of terracotta warriors unlike anything seen before or since.

Throughout 2016, Chicago’s Field Museum is hosting an exhibit of ancient terracotta figures from the tomb of China’s first emperor. Art historian Jeff Mishur of Art Excursions discusses the process used to create these figures. He also discusses other objects in this exhibition of ancient artifacts and their relationship to China’s imperial past.

BCPL Board of Trustees Seats To Be Filled Three seats on the Bensenville Community Public Library District seven-member Board of Trustees will be filled at the April 4, 2017 election. To be eligible to serve, a Library Trustee must be 18 years old, a resident of the Library District, and a registered voter.

Library Trustee candidate positions packets are available in the Administrative Office at the Bensenville Community Public Library District, 200 South Church Road, Bensenville, Illinois and may be filed during the following times: Monday, December 12 at 9:00 am through Monday, December 19 at 5:00 pm.

A candidates name will appear on the ballot in the order in which the nominating papers are received in the office. If a simultaneous filing occurs at 9:00 am on December 12, a lottery to determine the ballot placement for the Library Trustee Election will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 13 in the same office.

If a simultaneous filing occurs at 5:00 pm on Monday, December 19 a lottery to determine the ballot placement will be held Tuesday, December 20 at 10:00 am in the same office.

Currently we are donating to Literacy DuPage. Literacy DuPage is a nonprofit organization that helps adults achieve their goals through accessible and customized tutoring in English. Learners’ goals range from reading prescription bottles to having conversations with coworkers or their children’s teachers. Three years ago, Algebra I teachers Peter Carzoli and Jim Siple began talking about a way to deliver Algebra lessons using alternative instructional strategies. Enter Khan Academy, which has had a powerful academic impact on student learning.

Salman Khan launched Khan Academy in 2005 after the YouTube videos he had created to help his cousins master Algebra were viewed by students all over the world. He began to get thank you notes from viewers and he knew he could use his talent to promote skill mastery in many subject areas.

Many schools use Khan Academy but it is often for assigning problems only. Mr. Carzoli and Mr. Siple are using the technology available through Khan to deliver a mastery learning curriculum, meaning that students have as much time and as many attempts necessary to be successful. Mr. Carzoli likens mastery learning to secret sauce, “The idea has been around for nearly a century but technology in the one-to-one environment makes mastery learning possible in the traditional classroom.”

While teachers direct the curriculum and the pacing of class, as well as recommend problems within Khan that would be beneficial, students work more independently on their own Algebra 1 curriculum pathway. “We have found that students learn more when they are actually doing the work instead of watching us do problems over and over and over. When we introduce material and let them work, that’s when the learning occurs,” said Mr. Siple. In addition, he points out, students are more engaged, “They’re on task. When class starts students have already opened their Chromebooks and are working in Khan Academy - we have to tell kids to stop working and listen to the daily lesson – what a great problem to have!”

The program is structured in such a way that students must get 5 correct problems in a row to get any credit. Once students do, they must complete three mastery quizzes over the course of the next couple days in order to move toward mastery. Along the way, students conference with Mr. Carzoli and Mr. Siple to seek guidance and clarification.

Khan Academy also functions as another homework manager. When students open their Chrome Books, they each get the problem they need at their skill level - not the same problem as the other students in class. Khan differentiates automatically, giving instant feedback and a unique experience.

Student engagement in Algebra 1 and shifted instructional practices have paid off. The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test is given twice per year and measures how much students have grown academically. Each year, it is expected that students will grow 2-3 points in Algebra. The progress students have made since implementation (shown in the table below) has been astounding, and is likely to continue.

OVER 700 FENTON STUDENTS RECOGNIZED Fenton High School honored 772 students for their academic achievements at the annual Honor Roll Breakfast on September 22.

Surrounded by family members, students were acknowledged with a certificate of achievement and the praise of fellow students, teachers and administrators. Students earning a grade point of 3.0 or greater in the spring semester were designated honor roll students, while students earning a 3.5 or higher were designated high honor roll students.

On Sunday, October 9, the FHS Marching Bison Band took 3rd place in class AA at the Robert Morris University Marching Band Invitational. The Bison Band were second in class in the Drum Major category and class champions in the Music Ensemble category!

Families and community members in need were invited to a mobile food pantry sponsored by Jewel at Fenton High School on October 19.

Volunteers from Jewel and Fenton worked together to help families gather meat, produce and canned goods from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

FENTON CLASS OF 1966 DONATES FUNDS TO SUPPORT THE MOBILE FOOD PANTRY Members of the class of 1966 held their 50th class reunion the weekend of September 24 by taking a tour of the school, attending the football game and holding a dinner dance. At the dinner dance, the alumni donated enough money to support a mobile food pantry that will take place at Fenton High School. Organizer Ethel Field Laughlin spearheaded the initiative as a way to give the school a class gift.

On Saturday, September 17, Fenton High School students and staff members participated in the B-Well Bensenville Walk-a-thon. Many walked the 2.7 miles from the Park District to Redmond Park, while others greeted walkers at the FHS booth where participants could register to win a $50 Whole Foods gift card and get fitness tips.

FHS participants are part of the Fenton Community High School Wellness Committee which seeks to enhance the health of all school personnel, students, and community members through programs, education, and policies that promote a healthy environment.

A new food pantry is available to help Bensenville families combat food insecurity, hosted by Bensenville School District 2 in partnership with Fenton High School and Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The Food For Families pantries are held twice per month throughout the year at Tioga School and W.A. Johnson School and offer both perishable and non-perishable items.

Food For Families will be hosted at Tioga School on the first Tuesday of each month and at W.A. Johnson School on the third Tuesday of each month.

The new pantry is the District’s second food pantry program with Fenton High School and NIFB, along with the Mobile Food Pantry.

DISTRICT 2 STAFF WIN HONORS FROM STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION The Illinois State Board of Education recognized several District 2 staff with the Those Who Excel award for their excellent work in the field of education, including developing math curriculum and assessments based on new state standards and making every student feel their best in the classroom. DISTRICT 2 EXPANDS COMMUNITYBUILT MOHAWK PLAYGROUND Additions to the newly built Mohawk Playground were completed in September, with additional pre-K equipment and landscaping provided by Bensenville School District 2, the Bensenville Park District and the Village of Bensenville.

In total, the playground—built in one day by more than 200 volunteers from the Bensenville community, KaBOOM! and Target—now offers kids more than 4,000 sq. ft. of play space, with more than 15 pieces of play equipment and a soft and safe poured surface.

This new playground brings District 2 students’ dreams to life, including a swing set, Spin Central and even soccer goals! In the coming months, additional small projects will be completed, such as installing bike racks and a bike repair station provided by a grant from the Bensenville Youth Services Coalition.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM RECEIVES GOLD CIRCLE OF QUALITY Bensenville School District 2 is honored to announce that its preschool program for ages 3-5 received the Gold Circle of Quality rating from ExceleRate Illinois, a statewide rating and improvement system for early learning, for meeting the highest standards in learning environment and teaching quality; training and education; and administrative standards. The Gold rating is the highest a program can be awarded, after Licensed, Bronze and Silver.

The Illinois State Board of Education, the Governor’s Office of Early Childhood, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the Illinois Department of Human Services awarded the rating to District 2.

“We are very pleased to receive the Gold Circle of Quality rating,” said the Pre-K Team at Tioga School. “Teaching preschool allows us to set the foundation of learning through exploration and play-based experiences.”

FENTON HOLIDAY CONCERT FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS Thursday, December 1

NEW BUDGET CONTINUES CURRENT PROGRAMS AND AUTHORIZES NEW PRE-K CENTER The Board of Education approved the 2016-17 budget at its meeting on Sept. 21.

The budget continues the programs already in place: small class sizes; extra resources for students in math and English; special education; music and art; after-school clubs; and more. All these operations are fully paid from current revenues, including 23 percent State and Federal funding.

Also approved is the $5.2 million budget for the Pre-K Center, located at Tioga School but serving the entire District. This project will be paid for with District savings along with a $925,000 contribution from our partner, Metropolitan Family Services, and with $2.5 million from an ultra-low-interest bond awarded to the District by the State of Illinois.

Keep the Wreath Red As the holiday season begins, you will notice a large holiday wreath on the front of the Bensenville Fire Protection District stations.

Each of the wreaths will be decorated with large red bulbs that will be illuminated during the holiday season. Should a fire occur during the holiday season that is determined to have been directly caused by a holiday decoration, a white bulb will replace the red bulb.

The idea is for the residents of the Bensenville Fire Protection District to be exceptionally safety conscious during the holiday season.

The Bensenville / Wood Dale Food Pantry has been providing food assistance to the residents of Bensenville, Wood Dale and North Elmhurst since 1972. The pantry is funded entirely by monetary and food donations as well as grant assistance and run exclusively by volunteers.
