SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 STUDENTS INVOLVED WITH TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE— FEBRUARY 20, 2016 AT BLACKHAWK MIDDLE SCHOOL The SIT Conference (Students Involved in Technology) takes place on Saturday, February 20, 2016 from 8:00am until 2:00pm at Blackhawk Middle School. The conference is students teaching students about technology. Students may decide to present something they learned in school or something technology related that they find interesting and want to share. Students in grades 3-12 have a full day of fun, meaningful sessions with a keynote speaker and closing sessions with raffle prizes. Students may decide to be a presenter, attendee or both. All participants MUST register online before the deadline in order to be able to participate in the SIT Conference.

Each month, starting in February, the Bensenville Library will host free Chromebook class sessions — each student to complete the classes will get to keep their Chromebook! Classes will be 2 hours each and will be held on the first, second, and third Wednesday of each month. Students must be present for the entirety of the session, and you must complete part 1, 2, and 3 of the class in order to qualify to for your free Chromebook. Registration is required, one registration per person, and a Bensenville Library card is required.

BENSENVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 AND THE GREEN TEEN ZONE-WORKING TOGETHER FOR OUR STUDENTS Bensenville School District 2 is working together with the Green Teen Zone to assist our families with after school care and so much more in January of 2016 District 2 will be providing transportation to the Green Teen Zone at dismissal for our 4th and 5th graders from both Tioga and WA Johnson Schools. Blackhawk has a bus that departs after school for the Green Teen Zone and there is still room available.

BY THE BENSENVILLE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION Each year, the Bensenville Education Association selects a recipient of the Friend of Education Award. The recipient is a person or group who has shown excellence in dedicated service to the students and staff of Bensenville School District 2. This year, the Bensenville Education Association chose to honor Officer Banks.

He was honored at a breakfast at each of the schools. Officer Banks continually goes above and beyond his expected role to develop positive relationships with the students and support the students and teachers in any way he can. He is a true friend and partner in the education of students here in Bensenville. “Officer Banks is a true part of our team and is willing to support students in any way possible. He has mentored some of our middle school students during lunch when they needed extra guidance. He has helped us meet our students’ basic needs by helping us with wellness visits and providing resources in the community for families. He is looked upon as a role model for many of our students. He tries to motivate them to do well at school and in life.” —Valerie DiFresco, Social Worker at Blackhawk Middle School.

Bring a friend and have a chance at winning some great prizes if you and/or the friend sign up to mentor. We are looking for volunteers that would love working with our students academically in areas of primarily Reading or Math.

WINTER FUN AT REDMOND Tired of the seeing the kids play video games through the winter months? Head to Redmond Park and increase your child’s enjoyment of winter fun.

WINTER SESSION OF LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY | JANUARY 3 – MARCH 30 No experience needed. This program is open for boys and girls aged 4 – 12 years old and runs from January 3 – March 30.

Class choices are Sundays at 12:10 pm and/or Wednesdays at 5:20 pm. Both options are at the Edge on John Street. The cost is $143.00 for 12 weeks. We also offer a limited supply of new sets of equipment. A complete set of equipment (including a hockey stick) is available for $150.00. Each participant receives a Blackhawks practice jersey to wear during the classes.

PARKWAY TREE TRIMMING

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Village parkway trees are trimmed within various sections of the community during the months of December through March. Section 3 between Green Street and Jefferson Street and IL Route 83 to York Road will be trimmed this 2015/2016 winter season. The trees are pruned to eliminate low hanging branches, remove dead or damaged limbs, and reshape the tree crown thus enhancing and preserving the tree’s health and appearance. The objectives include: • Allow sun light to penetrate the crown of the tree to promote new growth and strengthen existing limbs.

• Eliminate weak forks in tree stems and reduce the weight on support limbs.

• Reduce the possibility of future damage to the tree by high winds and storms.

• Maintain adequate visibility and vertical clearance for vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Public Works crews perform trimming on trees 15” diameter and less and the Villages contractor trims tree greater than 15” diameter. All branches will be hauled off that day.

This year’s Honor Flight Hockey game is on February 27 at the Edge Ice Arena. This is a charity hockey game featuring players with the FBI vs Chicago Police Department. Last year’s event was sold out with over 2200 spectators and featured autographs from former Chicago Blackhawk players and many fun events and activities. Electric Aggregation Renewal Process Underway Residents saved $1.7 million in the last 3 years The Village of Bensenville competitively bid and selected a new electric supplier, Constellation Energy Service, at a rate of 6.395 for 24 months. ComEd’s current rate is 7.006 so the Village was able to secure a lower rate for residents. This change will go into effect in early spring 2016. Historically, municipalities are able to secure lower electric rates than individuals. Some general details about electrical aggregation: Are there any risks?

Electrical Aggregation has few downsides. If a resident or business does not want to participate, the program offers an opt-out process.

What does electrical aggregation mean to residents and small businesses in Bensenville?

• Residents and small businesses will have the option to “opt out” of the program, and can terminate at any time without penalty or cost; • The Village will arrange for all necessary filings and notifications to ComEd. There are no switching fees and there is NO interruption in service.

What can customers expect to stay the same with electrical aggregation?

• Reliability. ComEd will always respond to outages, maintain power lines, and respond to emergencies.

• Billing and Payment. ComEd will continue to send your bill and process your payments.

• Responsibility. ComEd will always be responsible for delivering all of the electricity you need.

• Accuracy. ComEd personnel will continue to read the meters and answer your questions.

Bensenville residents aged 55 and over are invited to enjoy a meal and play some bingo at Monty’s Banquet Hall located at 703 S. York Road. The cost is $4.00 for a great meal, raffle prizes, and bingo. If you would like to join the club, simply show up at Monty’s the day of the event with your ID. The Golden Wishes Program Are you a senior citizen living in Bensenville and have a wish? President Soto’s Senior & Disabled Advisory Council may be able to grant it! “Wish” requests are reviewed by the council quarterly. Wishes are “granted” based on the ability to fulfil the wish and the expense. We can’t grant any wishes relating to healthcare, automobiles or cash. Forms and information can be found at Village Hall and on our website at www.bensenville. il.us. If you have any questions please contact 630-350-3405.

Do I have to participate?

NO. Everyone will be given the opportunity to opt out of the program. Notice will be sent to you in the U.S. mail.

If an electric provider comes to your house claiming they are the new service provider for the Village it is not true and no permits have been issued to any electrical supply company to go door to door. If someone comes to your home please call the police department at 630.350.3455.

READER CHALLENGE JANUARY 1 TO MARCH 31 Calling all readers! Are you up for a challenge this winter?

Sign-up for the Bensenville Library’s first ever Reader Challenge. This new program will ask readers to step outside their comfort zone and read a genre they may not normally read. This winter we will be challenging readers to read more Young Adult novels.You don’t need to register to participate in the program! Just pick up a reading log at one of our public services desks. The first time you bring in your reading log we’ll add your name to our records and start recording your books. Each time you complete an item on your reading log you’ll receive an entry into our grand prize drawing for a Kindle Fire. Completing every item on your reading log will earn you a special prize that you can pick up at the Reader Challenge Celebration to be held on Sunday, April 10, at 2:00 p.m.

District 100 meetings are held at 7 pm in the board room at Fenton Community High School. Parents and community members are invited to attend.

The construction project that began at Fenton High School on June 1, 2015 will be complete in January 2016 when the new main entrance, student cafeteria, ChromeZone and six additional classrooms open for student and staff use.* The project launched in May of 2013 when Fenton began working with Wight & Company to examine the current facility and its potential for the future. A Facilities Committee, comprised of Fenton staff and administrators, District 100 Board of Education members, parents, students and community members, formed to research, set goals and develop a long-range building renovation plan.

The 2015 – 2016 school year started later to accommodate the rigorous construction schedule. When students arrived on August 31, they found a new student service center complete with a College and Career Center, remodeled Media Center renamed the Academic Resource Center (ARC), up-to-date sprinkler system throughout the building and remodeled and reconfigured classroom spaces. A new tutoring room also opened for student use before, after and during the school day.

During first semester, it was necessary to continue a regular school day with ongoing construction. Students needed to eat lunch in the Fenton Field House and navigating the building was sometimes a challenge for students and staff members who needed to get from one end of the campus to the other between passing periods. Temperature control within the building was also a challenge. But with true Fenton spirit, students and staff members worked and learned alongside each other during the process knowing the end result would be a tremendous benefit to all.

A community open house is being planned to celebrate the new and improved facility. Details will be posted to the Fenton website at www.fenton100.org when they are confirmed. *Please note that due to editorial deadlines, the information in this article was up-to-date as of December 1, 2015.

There is nothing like sitting by an open fire on a cold night. Indoor and outdoor portable ethanol burning fireplaces have become more popular in recent years. While these products provide ambiance and a little warmth, keep in mind the fuel, device and open flame can be dangerous.

Fireplace Safety KKK A portable ethanol burning fireplace, and the fuel, should only be used by adults.

KKK Clean up any fuel spillage and be sure all liquid has evaporated before lighting the fireplace.
