CAMPS BEGIN JUNE 6TH! The Bensenville Park District Summer Day Camp Program offers a noncompetitive atmosphere where youngsters can socially interact and participate in a variety of activities, have fun at the water park and go on field trips. Kids 6-10 will enjoy either Adventure Camp or Sports Camp and children 11-15 will like the schedule offered at Teen Camp. Camp fees for these full-time camps include a free healthy lunch provided by the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Parents may choose their child’s camp days and have opportunity to secure before and after camp care services. Other camps offered include Fischer Farm’s Discovery Camp held July 5 July 15 and part-time camps for ages 2-5, Tot Camp and Sunshine Camp.

On Saturday, March 12, the Fenton High School Special Olympics basketball team finished fourth at the Division 7 State finals that were held at Horton Hall on the campus of Illinois State University.

A celebration was held on the morning of March 11 to help send the athletes off in style. After a breakfast and photo event in the school’s Community Room, the team paraded into the main gym where the pep band, cheerleaders, Dance Force, girls soccer team, students and staff members applauded the team’s success.

The team received a further surprise with a coach bus and an escort by the Bensenville and Wood Dale Police Departments. Visit the Fenton Facebook page (accessible via the Fenton website) to view a photo album of the team.

Bensenville Arts Council / Bensenville Library Art Show During the months of March and April, student artwork was on display at the Bensenville Community Public Library.

The annual event, sponsored by the library and the Bensenville Arts Council, recognizes the outstanding artistic talent of Blackhawk Middle School and Fenton High School students. CHESS TEAM WINS INAUGURAL MSC CHAMPIONSHIP The Fenton Chess Team finished in first place at the inaugural Metro Suburban Conference match which was held on February 27. Individual awards were also earned by Krystian Tomasik, second place, Sebastian Oleksy, sixth place and Carlos Marquez, seventh place overall.

GROUP INTERPRETATION WINS SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP On Saturday, March 19 the Group Interpretation cast of Big Fish took first place at the IHSA Sectional competition. In addition, eight Fenton students were named to the All-Sectional Cast after being nominated by three or more judges. Contest Drama All-Sectional cast members include Carolynn Boatfield and Jacob Trzeciak for acting, and Kayla Garza for lighting. Group Interpretation All-Sectional cast members include Chelsea Cabanada, Spencer Franke, Adrian Nevarez, Nicole Rybak and Ripal Shah.

ROBOTICS CLUB RECEIVES INSPIRE AWARD The Fenton Robotics Team competed at the Illinois Robotics First Tech Challenge (IL FTC) Championship after qualifying and earning the highest award possible at the Chicago League Championship. In addition to the team receiving the Inspire award, Evan Ripperger earned the FIRST Dean’s List Award which is the only individual award given at the tournament.

SPEECH TEAM MEMBER FINISHES SIXTH AT STATE Fenton senior, Spencer Franke finished sixth in Original Comedy at the IHSA Individual Speech State finals. Spencer was among only 19 Illinois high school students to qualify after placing in the top three at one of the toughest Sectional competitions in the state. Of the 19 qualifiers, only six moved on to the final round of competition. Spencer (pictured with School Board secretary, Laura Wassinger, School Board president, Mary Ribando and School Board vice-president, David Vogel) was honored for his achievement by the Fenton High School District 100 Board of Education in March.

FENTON’S FINEST HONORED BY LEAD4YOUTH On Friday, March 11, fifty-seven students with the ‘Fenton’s Finest’ distinction were invited to a luncheon sponsored by LEAD4Youth at the Empress Banquet Hall in Addison. Fenton’s Finest seniors are selected annually by the principal and faculty based on their demonstration of dependability, service, scholarship, leadership and citizenship.

The event’s keynote speaker, Dorelia Rivera, Director of Government Programs at Blue Cross Blue Shield, shared a three part message with the Class of 2016: “learn to navigate relationships, embrace the unexpected and be passionate about what you do.”

The mission of the LEAD4YOUTH organization is ‘to recognize and reward students who demonstrate leadership qualities and potential.’ In 2014, the LEAD4YOUTH organization sponsored a scholarship for a Fenton senior. But in 2015, when LEAD4YOUTH founder, Fares Ghanimah had a graduating senior of his own; he decided to host an annual luncheon to honor all students who receive the distinction of Fenton’s Finest.

Mr. Ghanimah told the students: “When you LEAD, don’t leave anyone behind; when you EXCEL, don’t step on other people’s dreams; when you ACHIEVE your goals and dreams, do it with integrity and honor; and when you DEDICATE yourself, make sure it’s for serving others and being selfless.” To learn more about the LEAD4YOUTH organization, please visit their Facebook page at https://m.facebook.com/Lead4Youth.

CHORAL AND BAND CONCERTS The Fenton Music Department will celebrate the spring season with a Choral Concert on Thursday, May 12 and a Band Concert on Thursday, May 19. 30TH ANNUAL FINE ARTS FAIR Fenton High School will host its annual Fine Arts Festival on Wednesday, May 4 at 7:30 pm in the Community Room at Fenton. This year will feature art created by Fenton High School and Wood Dale Junior High students. Fenton seniors will be honored and awards will be announced. To celebrate the event’s 30th anniversary, former instructors will have art on display as well. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

NEW VILLAGE MANAGER EVAN K. SUMMERS On Tuesday, March 8, 2016 the Village of Bensenville hired Evan K. Summers to be their new Village Manager.

Mr. Summers served the City of Berwyn for nearly eight years, most recently as the Assistant City Administrator. Prior to serving the City of Berwyn, he served as research assistant for the City of Valparaiso. Mr. Summers is experienced in policy and budget analysis, compliance, public relations and economic development.

Mr. Summers holds his Bachelor of Science degree in Public Management from Indiana University and his Master of Business Administration from Purdue University.

LIBERTYFEST & 4TH OF JULY PARADE Be sure to stick around this 4th of July to enjoy all of the festivities taking place in Bensenville. Participants are already registering for our Independence Day Parade featuring some of the best bands, floats, and entertainment from around the region. We will also have live entertainment, food and drink, activities for all ages followed by a mega-firework display. MUSIC IN THE PARK & FRENCH MARKET Everyone’s favorite free, family summer concert series, Music in the Park, begins June 15 and has something to offer for all musical tastes.

Favorite Bensenville restaurants will sell dinner and dessert items, so families can have dinner in the park prior to the concert. Each concert night will also include a classic car night.

There is always a 50/50 split the pot raffle that benefits our local food pantry and service organizations.

Be sure to enjoy the French Market from 5:30-9:00 pm. The market combines local farmers and artisan food products with a wide variety of specialty shops and vendors, reminiscent of a European marketplace. SENIOR CITIZEN CLUB LUNCHEONS Bensenville residents aged 55 and over are invited to enjoy a meal and play some bingo at Monty’s Banquet Hall located at 703 South York Road. The cost is $4.00 for a great meal, raffle prizes, and bingo.

IRVING PARK ROAD BUSINESSES OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION!

VEHICLE STICKER REMINDER Last Day June 30

Please make an extra effort to patronize local Irving Park Road businesses in Bensenville while the intersection at Irving Park and York Road is under construction.

All vehicles registered or housed in the Village of Bensenville must purchase and display a vehicle sticker. Vehicle Stickers must be purchased by June 30. New residents and new vehicle purchases do not need to pay a penalty as long as the sticker is purchased within 30 days of move in date, or the date the new vehicle was purchased.

Vehicle sticker applications and instructions are available online at www.bensenville.il.us. Vehicle stickers can be purchased at Village Hall. Don’t forget, all dogs in the Village need to be licensed for a fee of $3 each. For more information call 630.766.8200.

This last phase of the project involves the addition of travel lanes both east and west bound and pedestrian accommodations. Once complete it will improve the area for local residents, businesses and all the traffic traveling through this corridor daily.

BENSENVILLE CELEBRATES 25TH YEAR AS TREE CITY The Tree City USA program has been greening up cities and towns across America since 1976. It is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees and Bensenville is proud to be celebrating 25 years of being designated as a Tree City. The Village achieves Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

CASHLESS TOLLING ON ROUTE 390 STARTS JULY 5 Happy 30th Anniversary Two Chefs!

Beginning July 5, 2016, cashless tolling will be coming to the Illinois Route 390 Tollway from Lake Street to I-290. This is the first, all-electronic roadway on the Illinois Tollway system, which provides for a safer, more efficient and seamless method of collecting tolls from customers.

Toll collection equipment over the traffic lanes reads the I-PASS transponder on the windshield and automatically collects tolls.

Drivers continue at highway speeds without the need to slow down or stop to pay at a toll. Tolls are lower on the Illinois Route 390 Tollway because they are assessed more frequently than other parts of the system. This allows for greater sensitivity for shorter trips and helps local communities provide congestion relief on adjacent roads.

I-PASS users always pay the lowest toll rates available, 50 percent less than those who do not have an I-PASS and must pay online. Those without an I-PASS can get a transponder at an I-PASS Customer Service Center or any Jewel-Osco location. For more information, visit www.illinoistollway.com.

The SIT Conference, in its 16th year, brings together more than 1700 students throughout Illinois at six different conference locations. This was Bensenville’s first year hosting the DuPage conference, sponsored by State Farm and the Illinois State Board of Education.

School was in session on Saturday, Feb. 20 as Bensenville School District 2 hosted the DuPage County site of the statewide 2016 Students Involved with Technology Conference.

Nearly all of the presenters were students, from avid techies who build robots at Blackhawk’s Underwater Robotics Club, to a pair of Blackhawk newcomers who created a video to help themselves and other middle school students learn English.

The conference kicked off with keynote speaker Marcin Kleczynski, who started his own tech company, Malwarebytes, as a student at Fenton High School.

Kleczynski, who landed a spot on Forbes’ 2015 30 Under 30 list for Enterprise Technology, encouraged students to pursue their passions and start their own business—and the best time to do that, he said, is now.

PROJECT C.A.R.E. PLUS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS | Thank You Volunteers!

Project CARE celebrates its 20th year this spring! The program began in 1996 with just 10 mentors as a way to support students in their reading education. Today, more than 300 community members, Fenton High School students and local college students volunteer as mentors in every subject area, offering educational support while instilling selfconfidence in students. The program could not have been so successful without these volunteers, who enjoy working with their students and truly care about their success.

DISTRICT 2 HOSTS SPANISH GED, CITIZENSHIP AND LITERACY CLASSES Bensenville School District 2 hosted three Spanish-language adult continued learning courses in partnership with College of DuPage during the Spring 2016 semester: GED, Spanish Literacy and Citizenship. The free classes, taught by COD professors, met Tuesdays and Thursdays at Tioga Elementary School from 5-7 p.m., with a total of 44 students. The goal, said Coordinator Christy Poli, is to provide BSD families with resources and services beyond the normal school day. By furthering their own education, parents are better able to teach and be role models to their own children. Classes end May 26th, but it’s not too late to join—all three classes have open enrollment and students are enrolled based on a required placement test. During the month of February, Tioga Elementary School’s Helping Heroes Service Club sold 726 pulseras, or bracelets, and 30 bags, raising $3,930 for the Pulsera Project, a national nonprofit that empowers Nicaraguan youth by purchasing pulseras to be sold in U.S. schools, with proceeds going back to the youth who made them. Liz Fausto, a 2nd grade teacher at Tioga, supervises the Service Club along with the school’s art teacher, Katelynn McAllister. Fausto said what really struck her was that Tioga is part of a primarily low-income district—yet her students were still eager to help kids in Nicaragua. In fact, Tioga’s Pulsera Project—the school’s first—was one of the most successful in the nonprofit’s history.

Pets give us comfort, friendship, and unconditional love. Our connection to them can be among the strongest relationships in our lives. But pets can cause fires. We need to be careful with pets in the home.

SAFETY TIPS

Pets and Wildfires

KKK Pets are curious. They may bump into, turn on, or knock over cooking equipment. Keep pets away from stoves and countertops.

KKK Keep pets away from candles, lamps, and space heaters.

Make sure pets are included in your family’s wildfire evacuation plan. Build an evacuation kit for each pet in your household. Ensure each kit is a size and weight that can be quickly and easily loaded into a vehicle when packing to evacuate.

KKK Always use a metal or heat-tempered glass screen on a fireplace and keep it in place.

KKK Keep pets away from a chimney’s outside vents.

Have a “pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from the fireplace. Glass doors and screens can stay dangerously hot for several hours after the fire goes out.

KKK Consider battery-operated, flameless candles.

They can look and smell like real candles.

KKK Some pets are chewers. Watch pets to make sure they don’t chew through electrical cords. Have any problems checked by a professional.

FACT Pets and wild animals have a part in starting about 700 home fires per year. Roughly three-quarters of these fires were started by cooking equipment, fireplaces or chimneys, lighting, or candles.

SMOKE ALARMS

KKK Have working smoke alarms on every level of the home. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month.

KKK If the smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out.

KKK Never go back inside for pets in a fire. Tell firefighters if your pet is trapped.
