FENTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL SPRING MUSICAL | Big Fish: The Musical Fenton High School is proud to present Big Fish: The Musical on April 21, 22, and 23 at 7:00 pm in the Lewis-Huffman Auditorium at Fenton. Tickets are five dollars and can be purchased at the door.

Based on the novel Big Fish: A Novel of Epic Proportions this musical adaptation explores the relationship between a father and child as well as between reality and imagination. Filled with magical characters and musical numbers Big Fish is a celebration of life with all of its joys and sorrows.

HELP SEW PATCHES FOR THE KORTHAUER LOG HOUSE

Stitch yourself into Bensenville’s history! Local historian Janis Arquette will be sewing patches for a quilt for the Korthauer Log House and she needs your help!

Stop by for a minute or two at the Bensenville Community Public Library in front of the fireplace and sew your own patch for the quilt. No sewing experience or supplies needed! Families, adults, and children accompanied by an adult are all welcome!

SENIOR CITIZEN MATINEE A luncheon and special matinee performance of Big Fish: The Musical will be performed for Bensenville and Wood Dale senior citizens beginning at noon on Saturday, April 23. Lunch will be served at noon and the performance will begin at 1:00 pm. There is no admission charge for this event but pre-registration is required. Last spring, Fenton students took a new standardized test required by the state of Illinois. The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is the assessment and accountability measure used in Illinois. At Fenton, the test was administered to 327 English 1 students and 126 Algebra 1 students. The data revealed that Fenton students performed above state averages and demonstrated successful implementation of the curricula. “Overall, I see these results as a springboard for curriculum and instructional conversations over the coming years, as we strive to prepare our students for their futures,” shared Dr. Jill Kingsfield, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Operations. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY SCHOOLS (EOS) On Thursday, January 28, the EOS Convening of Illinois School Partners was held at Fenton High School. EOS is a non-profit datadriven organization that assists schools in identifying students who are eligible but currently not enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The goal of the EOS program is to identify students from underrepresented demographic groups who have the potential to take more rigorous coursework. EOS is a matching grant program sponsored by the Google Global Impact Awards, Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, The Raikes Foundation and others.

Fenton was accepted into the EOS initiative based on demographic information and the ability to demonstrate a solidly implemented and rigorous AP program. At the start of the 2015 - 2016 school year, Dr. Jill Kingfield formed an EOS committee with Luke Justice, EOS Senior Director, to conduct student focus groups and gather survey information from both students and staff members.

Since then, 400 students have been identified as potential candidates for AP courses. A Student Insight Card has been created for each student which includes information on educational goals, career interests, indicators of AP readiness, access barriers to AP and personal comments made by the student.

“The goal is for every Fenton student to be college and career ready,” commented Dr. Kingsfield. “This is such exciting work and I have never seen such incredible and immediately useable data about individual students.”

STUDENT GOVERNMENT DAY On January 27, Fenton and Blackhawk Middle School student council leaders spent the day learning about their community during Bensenville’s Student Government Day. The event, sponsored by the Bensenville Intergovernmental Group (BIG), provides student leaders with a behind the scenes look at Bensenville School District 2, Bensenville Community Library, Bensenville Park District, Village of Bensenville, Bensenville Fire Protection District 2, Bensenville Emergency Management and Fenton. This event is part of a larger program sponsored by the members of BIG to provide students with an opportunity to sit at the table during Board meetings and share their insights on community and school improvements. This year’s event was organized by Dave Siefert, Director of the Bensenville Public Library and Mary Ribando, Fenton School Board President.

THE NEW YEAR BRINGS A RENOVATED CAMPUS AND NEW LEADERSHIP AT FENTON HIGH SCHOOL January 2016 was a transformative time at Fenton High School. When students started their second semester schedules on January 25 the newly renovated main entrance, student common area, ChromeZome, cafeteria and classrooms were open for student and staff use. Several open houses are being planned for late spring and details will be shared in the May/June issue of the community newsletter.

January was also a time of administrative change. The District 100 Board of Education approved the retirement of Dr. Kathie Pierce on January 13. Fenton students, staff and the District 100 Board of Education are grateful to Dr. Pierce for her years of service to Fenton and wish her much happiness in her retirement.

The transition to new leadership is well underway and we are proud to announce that Dr. Gayle Wahlin has been named Acting Superintendent for Fenton Community High School District 100. Dr. Wahlin has been the Interim Director of Human Resources at Fenton since September and has over thirty years in education with expertise in leadership, development and curriculum. She retired from Naperville School District 203 in 2007 where she served as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources. Prior to her coming to Fenton, she served as the Director of Professional Services for the DuPage Regional Office of Education. Dr. Wahlin earned her Doctoral Degree in Education from Loyola University, with an emphasis on leadership.

Additionally, at the January 25 District 100 Board of Education Meeting, Dr. Jill Kingfield was named Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Operations. Dr. Kingsfield has been a member of the Fenton administrative team since 2004 when she was hired as an Assistant Principal of Student Accounting. Since July, 2011, Dr. Kingfield served as Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

BENSENVILLE JEWEL-OSCO FRESH MARKET GRAND OPENING AND RIBBON CUTTING On January 12, the Fenton High School Board of Education, administrators, students and staff joined Village officials to welcome a Jewel-Osco Fresh Market to the Bensenville community.

“On behalf of the Fenton High School Board of Education, I am thrilled to welcome Jewel-Osco,” commented Fenton School Board President, Mary Ribando. “From the get go, the Jewel staff reached out to our students offering job recruitment fairs and assisting with the job application process. They were incredibly supportive.”

During the grand opening, store manager, Luigi DiMatteo presented a $2,500 donation from the store. “This was a tremendous gift for our students,” said President Ribando. ”We simply can’t thank them enough and look forward to a great school/business partnership.” The money will be used in the school’s textbook account and benefit every Fenton student.

After the official ribbon cutting, the Fenton Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Garett George, performed the Fenton school song. The ensemble continued to entertain shoppers throughout the grand opening event.

Individual branches smaller than 6 inches diameter and ten feet in length are collected. Place cut ends toward the street laying on parkway. Brush may be placed on parkway beginning the Friday prior to scheduled collection week, but no later than 7:00 am on the first Monday of each month. Each street receives a single collection during the scheduled week. Placing brush/branches out after deadline can result in a citation and no pick-up.

SENIOR CITIZEN CLUB LUNCHEONS Bensenville residents aged 55 and over are invited to enjoy a meal and play some bingo at Monty’s Banquet Hall located at 703 South York Road. SEVERE WEATHER SEASON Remember Watches & Warnings are issued by the National Weather Service. A Watch means conditions are right for severe weather to occur, this is your time to get ready, know what to do. A Warning means the severe weather is occurring in the warned area, this is the time to take action. Monitor weather condition through your TV, apps on your cell phone, or messages on the radio.

Prepare for the possibility of a tornado Shelter Inside: Lowest level in the building in an interior room or hallway under something sturdy like a workbench or staircase. This works at home and at work. At the mall look for designated shelter areas, usually identified on area maps posted on walls or ask security personnel.

Shelter Outside: If you can’t get into a building get into a ravine or ditch lay flat protecting your head and neck with your arms and hands. During a tornado situation, do NOT stay in your car, do NOT try to out run the Tornado. Get to that building, ravine or ditch.

If a funnel (tornado aloft) or tornado (in contact with the ground) is confirmed to be at or within five miles of Bensenville, our outdoor warning sirens will be activated for a minimum of five minutes. That is your signal to take immediate protective action and get to a place of safety.

While much of the focus during severe weather is on tornadoes, wind and hail, there are actually more deaths caused each year by flooding and lightning. If you hear thunder or see lightning, head inside immediately! When Thunder Roars Go Indoors! Heavy rainfall from thunderstorms can quickly cause rivers and streams to overrun their banks and cause street flooding in cities. Remember, if you encounter a flooded roadway, do NOT drive or walk into it.

CHICAGO FOLKLORE ENSEMBLE SUNDAY, MARCH 13 @ 2:00 PM The Chicago Folklore Ensemble aims to recognize and celebrate Chicago’s elder immigrant musicians and help share and pass on their stories and musical knowledge through performances that interweave music and storytelling. They interview musicians of many ethnic backgrounds, collect their songs and stories, and adapt them into arrangements for string quartets and storytellers honoring those musicians.

Through music, painting, filmmaking, writing, and collecting, thirteen individuals are interviewed about creating art and searching for murderous artifacts. Local crime historian John Borowski will screen his documentary at the Bensenville Theatre. The screening will be followed by a signing and a Q & A session.

THURSDAY, APRIL 14 @ 6:30 PM | AGES: 6 TO 12-YEARS-OLD Celebrate National Library week with Miss Denise! Learn how to make a book from a single sheet of paper, and then decorate the cover, write a story, draw pictures, whatever you would like. MYON ONLINE READING PROGRAM Last summer District 2 piloted the myON online reading program. Since the start of the program, students have read more than 3,000 hours! The program was expanded last fall and the district looks forward to even more reading progress with the support of 4,500 online books for students to choose from. The program is more than just e-books, however.

Students can use the program both at home and at school, and teachers can keep up with students using the myON journal, allowing them to ask students more about the books they’re reading and gain a better understanding of how to grow students’ reading skills.

BMS JAZZ ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE Congratulations to the BMS Jazz Ensemble on a stellar performance at the 19th Annual Thomas Middle School Jazz Jamboree in Arlington Heights. The band received comments from educators Greg Helton and Mark O’Connor. In addition, to receiving an outstanding performance award from the festival, Brianna Ketter & Quinn Wilcoxen received outstanding soloist awards. What’s next for the band? Catch them on March 5th 2016 at Hester Junior High School in Franklin Park for the IGSMA District Jazz Contest.

21ST CENTURY LEARNING CENTER GIVES BLACKHAWK STUDENTS MORE ROOM TO COLLABORATE AND CREATE Over the summer Blackhawk Middle School made room for learning with major updates to the auditorium and learning center. The $3 million renovation updated the auditorium with new seating, carpeting and equipment.

It also created a brand new learning center and converted the old learning center into STEM, art and general classrooms. Students now have a more interactive space in the new learning center, with large work areas for presentations, creating projects and learning research strategies. Students can create in the Maker’s Space, film projects in the green screen room and collaborate in breakout conference rooms.

Smoke alarms save lives. However, people who are deaf or hard of hearing may not be able to depend on the traditional smoke alarm to alert them to a fire.

SAFETY TIPS

KKK Smoke alarms and alert devices, called accessories, are available for people who are deaf. Strobe lights throughout the home are activated by smoke alarms and alert people who are deaf to fire conditions. When people who are deaf are asleep, a high intensity strobe light is required along with a pillow or bed shaker to wake them up and alert them to fire conditions so they can escape. Currently this equipment is activated by the sound of a standard smoke alarm.
