BENSENVILLE COMMUNITY PUBLIC LIBRARY HEROES ON THE AIR SUNDAY, JULY 23 @ 2:00 PM

Before the Man of Steel became a movie star and Little Orphan Annie a Broadway icon, they were among the many heroes who made the move from the funny papers to enthrall a generation of listeners through their appearances on radio. Join radio historian and Those Were the Days host Steve Darnall for a super evening of sounds from the past, featuring some of the many heroes who made their way from comics for radio—and a few who started on radio and went on to conquer the world.

Children of all ages are invited to join us on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. for Park Play, the Library’s outdoor playgroup. Each week the Library will be at Sunset Park for an hour of outdoor play.

Socialize with other parents and caregivers while your child enjoys sunshine, fresh air, as well as active, manipulative, and sensory play. NOTE: Park Play will be relocated to the Library’s meeting room in inclement weather.

Laurel will also delve into the history of the government issued military headstones including the numerous Civil War memorials that were placed throughout towns around the country after the war to honor soldiers and military heroes.

Hayao Miyazaki is a Japanese film director, producer, screenwriter, animator, author, and manga artist. Through a career that has spanned five decades, Miyazaki has attained international acclaim as a masterful storyteller and maker of anime feature films. He, along with Isao Takahata, co-founded Studio Ghibli, a film and animation studio. In honor of Hayao Miyazaki coming out of retirement to give us one more beautiful creation, the Library will be showing Studio Ghibli classic movies on the second Monday of each month at 3:30 pm in the Lifelong Learning Center.

For those looking to learn to swim, we offer our Learn to Swim program on Saturday and Sunday mornings with levels to accommodate Parent & Tots, PreSchool, Levels 1 – 6 and Teen/Adult classes. The Bensenville Wahoo Swim Team is a recreational swim team for children ages 6-18, focusing on perfecting competitive stroke techniques and times, with an emphasis on good sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles. Stick and Helmet Program

This is a fun program for kids, parent or both. This is really just good old-fashioned pond hockey at its finest. Mom or Dad are encouraged to join junior on the ice for some quality bonding and healthy exercise.

Parents must have a helmet, skates and hockey stick. Shins pads and elbow pads are recommended. Face masks are required for children. If you are a Bensenville resident, the fee is just $9 for you and your child or $9 for each child. All adults must be accompanied by a child to participate in this program. WATCH FOR THE CAR SEAT GIVEAWAY EVENT! The Bensenville Chamber of Commerce is partnering up with the Village of Bensenville to host a free Car Seat Giveaway and Installation Event. It will be open to Bensenville residents with children, or residents who are expecting a child who are in need of a car seat or booster seat. The car seat will be installed on the premises by professionals. Please see chart to determine if your child requires a car seat. One seat per family and proof of residency will be required. DOG LICENSE REMINDER Please remember that Village ordinance requires every owner of a dog within the Village to annually register their dog and pay a fee of $3.00 per dog. Dog Licenses expire on June 30th each year. If the tag is lost, a replacement fee of $3.00 is required.

PAPER SHREDDING EVENT

LAWN MAINTENANCE REMINDER With summer finally here, please remember that maintaining your property is important to the Village and your neighbors.

To avoid citations, remember grasses, weeds and plants that are not intended for ornamental purposes are to be no taller than eight inches. In addition to your own lawn, please be mindful of your neighbor’s yard when parking along the street to avoid damage to their grass. The Village will host a shredding event on Saturday, July 8 from 10am-noon for Bensenville residents at the Public Works Facility, 717 East Jefferson, in conjunction with the Public Works Open House. Residents (no businesses) may bring up to 2 banker boxes of paper for shredding, no binders. Persons will be required to stay in the vehicle. Shredding occurs on-site.

2016 RESIDENT ONLY BRUSH AND BRANCH REMOVAL PROGRAM Please do not bundle brush and branches.

REPUBLIC SERVICES collects brush April through November 30: individual branches less than three feet in length and one inch in diameter on your regular trash collection day from your regular collection point. Place in biodegradable paper bags or garbage cans with two Yard Waste Only labels attached. Yard Waste Only stickers can be picked up for free at the Village Hall. Republic Services collects these branches with other residential yard waste.

To discard root balls, break them up into small enough pieces to fit into your trash container for Republic Services to collect.

VILLAGE CREWS collect larger brush on the first full week of each month of July through November. Place cut ends of brush and branches towards the street. Individual branches must not exceed six inches in diameter or ten feet in length. Brush may be placed on the parkway for collection beginning the Friday before the scheduled collection week, but no later than 7:00 am on the first Monday of each month. Each street receives a single collection during a scheduled week; Brush and branches placed out after the deadline will not be picked up and could result in a citation.

Please remember, prior to having your garage sale, you are required to complete and submit a Garage Sale Permit to Village Hall. In 1990, the DuPage County Board passed Ordinance OWR-001-90 banning the illegal disposal of landscape waste.

WHY? • To maintain acceptable ambient air quality and to protect the health, welfare and safety of DuPage County’s residents.

• The open burning of landscape wastes produces particulate matter that may exceed the National Ambient Air Quality survey standard.

WHAT DOES DUPAGE COUNTY’S ORDINANCE SAY? It shall be unlawful for any person to cause or allow any open and uncontrolled burning of landscape wastes at any site in unincorporated DuPage County.

It shall be unlawful for any person to cause or allow the burning of any refuse including landscape waste in any chamber not specifically designed for the purpose and approved by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency pursuant to regulations adopted by the Illinois Pollution Control Board or specified by this Ordinance.

FENTON HIGH SCHOOL UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP On July 1, two new administrators took over the top leadership positions at Fenton Community High School District 100. James Ongtengco is the new superintendent, and Jovan Lazarevic is the new principal.

Fenton High School, “I am pleased to have been chosen to lead Fenton High School, and am committed to continuing the long standing tradition of excellence that our school community has come to expect.”

Mr. Ongtengco has served Fenton as its Principal/Associate Superintendent for the past two years. Prior to that he was an assistant principal at Mundelein High School.

Jovan Lazarevic was most recently an assistant principal at Prospect High School where was instrumental in overseeing programs that enhanced the learning environment for students. These include managing Professional Learning Communities in the building, organizing the Hour of Code, initiating the ipad pilot program for health classes and introducing AP courses in the Career and Technical Education department.

After completing his B.A. in Biology at the University of Illinois, Mr. Ongtengco began his teaching career at Roberto Clemente High School before moving to Belvidere High School where he taught biology and physical science.

Mr. Ongtengco earned his master’s degree in Human Resource Development from Northeastern University, and is currently a doctoral student at Aurora University.

On Sunday, May 21, Fenton High School held commencement exercises for 357 members of the Class of 2017.

The Fenton Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mr. George, began the ceremony with Pomp and Circumstance and the Fenton Concert Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Williams, performed Climb Every Mountain and the newly commissioned piece We are Bison Pride written by Doug Orlyk. Fenton Scholar Addresses were delivered by seniors Joseph Andrews and Ripal Shah. The Class of 2017 presented its gift of a courtyard path outside the community room and will leave behind a legacy of completing 24,626.5 hours of community service.

Ripal Shah, a member of the National Honor Society (NHS), has been named a national semifinalist in the National Honor Society Scholarship program. She was chosen from more than 9,000 applicants, and is one of the top 300 NHS members in the nation. She is one of only three recipients in Illinois and will receive a $2,325 scholarship.

Finalists are selected on the basis of their leadership skills; participation in service organizations, clubs, and other student groups at school and in the community; and their academic record.

FENTON USES ARTS COUNCIL GRANT MONEY FOR RAKU POTTERY Raku is a form of Japanese pottery with a distinctive finish. The process by which the pottery gets its look begins when the clay pieces are fired at a relatively low temperature, and then moved while hot to a closed container filled with combustible materials (such as paper or sawdust) that ignite and create colors and patterns on the pottery’s surface.

Art teacher JoAnna Rieger applied for and received a grant from the Bensenville Arts Council that brought Tim Pfiffner from Great Lakes Clay to the school to teach her and her students how to run a raku firing. Based on a suggestion from Tim, Mrs. Rieger’s Ceramics 2 class spent much of the second semester building the kiln used in the second step of the process. All ceramics pieces were first fired in the inside kilns, and then the final raku glaze firing was done in outdoor kiln the students built. The results are beautiful!

Bensenville Park District is currently taking registrations for their 2017 Summer Camp Program. Parents are able to add before and after care service and pick and choose their camp days each time they register.

The Day Camp Program offers children the ability to spend their camp day having fun at the Bensenville Water Park and Splash Pad, going on field trips, and socializing with old and new friends while participating in a variety of fun activities. Full time campers will receive an optional Free Healthy Lunch every day that will be provided by the Northern Illinois Food Bank. In addition to the full time camps, the Park District also offers a Sunshine Camp for children ages 3-5 and Tot Camp for ages 24-35 months.

KEEP ON TRUCKIN’ Bensenville School District 2 recently donated a delivery truck to the Bensenville/Wood Dale Food Pantry.

The Bensenville/Wood Dale Food Pantry needed a new box truck, and District 2 just happened to have an extra one on its hands. The District’s old truck turned out to be a $10 solution to the Pantry’s $25,000 problem. That’s how much the pantry set out to raise two years ago to replace their old truck, which needed frequent repairs.

Recently, District 2 stopped using a 2005 Ford delivery truck following its own purchase of a replacement vehicle. In May, the Pantry handed over a $10 donation to the District, and District 2 handed over the keys to the retired truck. Now the Pantry has a more reliable means of transportation, which it must have in order to function.

The Bensenville/Wood Dale Food Pantry has served District 2 families for more than 40 years. Every month, it distributes approximately 20,000 pounds of food to more than 300 local families in need. To do so, it must pick up donations from individuals, food manufacturers, retailers, community food drives, and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

It even collects leftover items from District 2’s Food for Families events.

TWICE AS NICE! This year, Project CARE volunteers more than doubled the number of hours they served in District 2 schools.

Project CARE celebrated its most successful year to date on May 25 with a thank-you luncheon at Monty’s Banquet Hall for its mentors.

The program grew tremendously this year, from about 300 community members last year, to more than 475 mentors who volunteered more than 9,000 hours of their time to help District 2 students in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Volunteers range from parents and retirees to local business representatives to students from Fenton High School, Elmhurst College, and College of DuPage.

Schools and area churches are finding new ways to serve their shared communities through District 2’s Interfaith Council.

Journey Church of Elmhurst recently launched Project B2, a congregation-wide effort to support Bensenville School District 2’s various community service efforts. It kicked off this effort in May when members of Journey Church volunteered at the Food for Families event at Johnson School. Not only did they help distribute food; they also gave children and families free used books that church members donated to a recent book drive.

Journey Church is but one of several area churches regularly participating in District 2’s Interfaith Council. Other members include Bensenville Bible Church, First United Methodist Church of Bensenville, Grace Lutheran Church, St. Alexis Roman Catholic Church, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, and Faith Community United Church of Christ, which partnered with District 2 to launch the Council about two years ago.

The goal of District 2’s Interfaith Council is to explore ways in which schools and local churches can work together to support their shared communities.

Install smoke alarms inside every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound.

According to an NFPA survey, only one of every three American households have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan.

While 71% of Americans have an escape plan in case of a fire, only 47% of those have practiced it.

One-third of American households who made an estimate thought they would have at least 6 minutes before a fire in their home would become life-threatening. The time available is often less. And only 8% said their first thought on hearing a smoke alarm would be to get out!
