BENSENVILLE PARK DISTRICT ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION & STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM The Bensenville Park District has committed to the development of an Ecological Restoration and Stewardship Plan to restore and maintain the natural park areas and preserve our natural heritage throughout the District.

Swim Lesson Registration is Underway The Bensenville Park District’s Learn to Swim Program, for beginners and advanced swimmers, emphasizes improving swimming ability, increasing confidence and water safety under the instruction of competent, experienced instructors. Summer Kick-off Celebration FRIDAY | JUNE 9 | 5-10PM Free admission to the Water Park! Attendees will have a chance to win a Water Park Pass for a family of four. Featuring the Bensenville Park District’s showcase of all their summer programs, as well as music, games, prizes, and waterpark fun! At dusk, guests are invited to watch and enjoy the movie Star Wars The Force Awakens on the hill in the Water Park.

Summer Camps! Begin June 12th The Bensenville Park District Summer Day Camp Program offers a noncompetitive atmosphere where youngsters can socially interact and participate in a variety of activities. Kids 6-10 will enjoy either Adventure Camp or Sports Camp and children 11-15 will like the variety of activities offered at Teen Camp. Camp fees for these full-time camps include a free healthy lunch provided by the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Parents have the ability to pick and choose their child’s camp days and have opportunity to secure before and after camp care services. Other camps offered include Fischer Farm’s Discovery Camp held July 10- July 21 and part-time camps for ages 2-5, Tot Camp and Sunshine Camp.

Live at White Pines, The Concert Series The free summer concerts at White Pines will feature talent that presents a variety of music genres. The first performers, Vic Lombardi & the Chicago Seven, will kick off the series on June 30th with soul, R&B and rock favorites. The summer concert series on 37 Bar & Grill’s patio features live music on the last Friday of the month.

Civil War Reenactment Weekend at Fischer Farm SATURDAY, JUNE 24 & SUNDAY, JUNE 25 | 10AM-3PM Step back in time one hundred and fifty years during one of the most significant events in our history. There will be a rally for drills in the morning and a skirmish in the afternoon as well as first-person presentations throughout the day. Attendees will be able to meet the soldiers, listen to music, and learn about civilian life during this time. The canon will be fired at 11am, 12pm and 1pm. Admission fees are $5 for adults and children under 13 are $3; pay at the event.

Seniors Ethan Guerra and Javier Sanchez will continue to be teammates when they go off to college in the fall.

Both students have signed letters of intent to play volleyball at Judson University in Elgin.

Javier started on the varsity team as a sophomore, and Ethan started on varsity when he arrived at Fenton his junior year. Head volleyball coach Heather Petersen says that having Ethan and Javier on her team has raised the bar for the other players by making them work harder, and has also driven her to be a better coach. “In my five years as a head coach, these are the first of my players to continue playing volleyball post high school. I am very proud of how hard they have both worked to gain success, and wish them luck as they begin their careers at Judson.�

Located 45 miles northwest of Chicago, Judson University is home to over 1,250 students from 30 states and 20 countries where they offer more than 50 undergraduate majors, minors and pre-professional programs.

31ST ANNUAL FINE ARTS FEST Fenton High School will host its annual Fine Arts Festival on May 3 at 7:30 pm in the Community Room at Fenton. Artwork created by Wood Dale and Blackhawk students will be on display along with pieces done

by Fenton artists. Fenton students and staff members judge the artwork prior to the show and awards will be given during a ceremony at 7:45 pm. In addition to great artwork, there will be food and a raffle. This event is free to the public and all are welcome to attend.

CONCERTS The Fenton Music Department will celebrate the spring season with a Choral Concert on May 8, and a Band Concert on May 11. Both concerts are held in the Lewis-Huffman Auditorium and begin at 7:00 p.m. There is no charge for attending and all are welcome to attend.

On Friday, April 7, students with the Fenton’s Finest distinction attended a luncheon in their honor sponsored by LEAD4Youth at the Empress Banquet Hall in Addison.

Fenton’s Finest seniors are selected annually by the principal and faculty based on their demonstration of dependability, service, scholarship, leadership and citizenship.

This is the second year that Fares and Noe Ghanimah hosted the event for Fenton students. Mr. Ghanimah told the students, “When you LEAD, don’t leave anyone behind; when you EXCEL, don’t step on other people’s dreams; when you ACHIEVE your goals and dreams, do it with integrity and honor; and when you DEDICATE yourself, make sure it’s for serving others and being selfless.”

Mrs. Ghanimah told the story of her son Abraham and the challenges he faced as a small boy when he had to have surgery to improve his hearing. Throughout his early years, Abraham worked with speech therapists, even giving up recess and other extra-curricular activities in order to learn to speak properly. Along the way, Abraham and his parents were told that he may not even graduate high school. He not only graduated from Fenton but was ranked fourth in his class and is now an engineering student at Cornell College in New York. Abraham and three of his classmates from Cornell spoke to students about their experiences in college, ways they coped with the transition to college, how they balance their social and academic lives, and some things they would do differently.

Fenton is grateful to the Ghanimah family for their generosity, kindness and motivational words to our seniors as they leave Fenton and begin another chapter in their lives.

FHS SENIOR TO PLAY DIVISION I SOCCER Senior Noel Lopez has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Northern Illinois University. Noel has been a standout player for Sockers FC since he was 14 and he hopes that his soccer career at Northern will propel him into professional soccer.

Chartered in 1895, and home to 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students, Northern Illinois University is a world-class, research-focused public institution that attracts students from across Illinois, the country and the world.

CLASS OF 2017 CLASS GIFT The class of 2017 wanted to make a lasting impression on Fenton High School through its class gift. Fiftythree students took time from their spring break to dig up grass and dirt in the courtyard to make room for the brick layers to lay a pathway.

Although the rainy weather was a factor, the FHS team worked tirelessly over four days to earn 467.5 hours of community service credit and get the job done. Even the contractor who donated his time remarked about how hard the students worked without complaining. Students will be putting the finishing touches to the pathway in the coming days. The result will be a beautiful pathway that connects both doors heading out to the courtyard from the community room.

Special thanks to Ms. Rajendran, class of 2017 sponsor for her support throughout this project and Director of Buildings and Grounds Mr. Brodie and his crew for being part of the process from the beginning.

Also, thank you to Division Leader for math and science Mrs. Luna and her husband Brian Shelton who donated their time, equipment and laborers from their landscaping business to lay the path. And a shout out goes to Mr. Ongtengco for supplying manual labor and working alongside students to make sure the project was completed on time. Members of the class of 2017 raised $4,800 to fund the project. What a great team effort!

FENTON DRAMA STUDENTS PERFORM IN SECTIONAL & STATE COMPETITIONS Each year, high school drama students from across Illinois take part in the IHSA Contest Drama and Group Interpretation competitions. For over 50 years, Fenton High School has entered the contest that has two parts - a sectional competition and state finals.

Contest Drama is a 40-minute show based on a well-known play. The challenge is cutting an entire play down to the allotted time, while still telling a complete story. Judges base their scores on the performance of the students, not necessarily on how the play was cut.

Fenton’s Contest Drama selection was a portion of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. The students took third place in the sectional competition. Although only the top two teams advance to state, Fenton did have students who received sectional honors. Congratulations to All-Sectional Cast members: Kris Marquez, Alex Radisavljevic, Ricky Blanche and Jordan Blanche. In addition, Fenton’s Abel Zepeda was awarded the only All-Sectional Technical Crew Member.

Group Interpretation is a 30-minute reader’s theater performance that can be an original work, a choral reading or a choice from an already established show. The difference is there are no costumes or props used in the Group Interpretation. Fenton’s selection this year was a portion of A League of Their Own. The Fenton team placed third, which advanced them to the state competition at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The following Group Interpretation cast members made the AllSectional Cast: Anne Gonzales, Gaby Rago, Adam Kashif, Malien Tingpalpong, Aitanna Nadala and Serena Napolitano. In addition, Gaby Rago was named to the All-State Group Interpretation cast in Springfield.

WELCOME NEW VILLAGE PRESIDENT, FRANK DESIMONE New leadership and a new vision for Bensenville – that’s what new Village President Frank DeSimone vows to deliver to the community and its residents.

The former village trustee and longtime community volunteer recently took office after winning the April election. He comes into office ready to hit the ground running on seeing through existing developments and kick-starting new ones, all with an eye on improving the village for residents and businesses alike. Most importantly, he said he wants multiple voices to have a seat at the table of his administration.

“I want to be that breath of fresh air, with new ideas, a new vision, someone who listens and who is ready to help Bensenville flourish,” he said. “Development is going to be our key to doing that, whether it is the I rving Park Road corridor, Western Access, or downtown. There are tremendous possibilities that I want to make a reality.”

“Safety is my number one concern, but I know that we have a great police department,” he said. “What I’d like to see is adding a few more officers to our patrol division and giving all of them the tools and resources they need to be successful.”

MUSIC IN THE PARK Everyone’s favorite free, family summer concert series, Music in the Park begins June 14th and has something to offer for all musical tastes. Bensenville restaurants will sell dinner and dessert items so families can have dinner in the park prior to the concert. Each concert night will also include a classic car night.

LIBERTYFEST & 4TH OF JULY PARADE Be sure to stick around this 4th of July to enjoy all of the festivities taking place in Bensenville. Participants are already registering for our Independence Day Parade featuring some of the best bands, floats and entertainment from around the region.

FIREFIGHTER APPRECIATION DAY THURSDAY | MAY 4 @ 10:30 AM | ALL AGES Join us for the fun as we celebrate International Firefighters’ Day! Miss Kyrie and Miss Diane will welcome two very special firefighters who will read aloud and teach us important fire safety skills. Then we’ll head outside to see the fire vehicles from the Bensenville Fire Protection District. A new addition this year will be the Fire Safety Trailer!

This is a simulated home where a firefighter will guide children through steps they should take if there is a fire in their own home. Registration is not required to attend.

THANK YOU TO OUR OUTGOING TRUSTEES, WELCOME TO OUR NEW TRUSTEES The Bensenville Community Public Library would like to thank both Nancy Rizzo and Sergio Zgrzebski for their service on the Library’s Board of Trustees. While serving on the Board both Nancy (2011-2017) and Sergio (2015-2017) have been instrumental in ensuring the Library as a vibrant, fiscally responsible, and innovative resource for the community. Both were key contributors in forming the foundation of the Library for many years to come. As Trustees, Nancy and Sergio were able tooversee the drafting and implementation of a new strategic development plan (2015), the successful hiring and transition of a new Library Director (2015), the building of an early childhood room addition (2016), and so much more.

Nancy was also a key figure in the reintroduction of the Library’s Saturday hours in 2011. The Community of Bensenville and the staff of the Library are very grateful for all of the long hours and hard work that Nancy and Sergio dedicated to the Library.

The Library is also very excited to be joined by new Trustees Kathleen “Kathy” Quinn and Tina Lux. We know that both are committed to continuing the enduring spirit that has been created by Library staff and great Trustees like Nancy and Sergio.

Through a career that has spanned five decades, Miyazaki has attained international acclaim as a masterful storyteller and maker of anime feature films. He, along with Isao Takahata, co-founded Studio Ghibli, a film and animation studio. In honor of Hayao Miyazaki coming out of retirement to give us one more beautiful creation, the Library will be showing Studio Ghibli classic movies on the second Monday of each month at 3:30 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center.

BSD2 WORKSHOPS ON EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY HELP PARENTS BUILD THEIR CHILDREN’S BRAINS AND SHAPE THEIR FUTURES Throughout April, Bensenville School District 2 partnered with Project Help and the YWCA to present a free workshop series on the Thirty Million Words Initiative.

The Thirty Million Words Initiative believes those 30 million words are key to closing the achievement gap and giving children the best start in life.

The Thirty Million Words Initiative is based on a worldfamous study that found that some children heard 30 million fewer words by their fourth birthdays than others.

Also, those children were typically exposed to harsher language, less complex vocabulary, and less conversational give-and-take. Children who heard more words were better prepared when they entered school. When followed into third grade, they had bigger vocabularies, were stronger readers, and got higher test scores.

Through its workshops on this topic, District 2 encouraged parents to use the power of their words to build their children’s brains and shape their futures. They provided parents with strategies to enrich their children’s early language skills by incorporating more words into their day-to-day life.

The bottom line: the study found that kids who started out ahead, stayed ahead; the kids who started out behind, stayed behind. This disparity in learning is referred to as the achievement gap

Reading together can provide families with some of their most memorable summer experiences, and our myON Books program is a great summer reading option for families.

The myON reading program gives families unlimited access to wonderful literature right at their fingertips. At home or on vacation--by the pool, on the patio, or at ballpark--all families have to do is log into myON and search for books that interest them from among the thousands of titles offered by the online program.

CELEBRATE SUMMER! Once again, District 2’s Summer Celebration will feature carnival rides for all ages, games, food, and family fun.

This year, Bensenville School District 2’s Summer Celebration will be held May 18-21 at Bensenville Town Square. The carnival’s hours of operation will be …

Thursday | May 18 | 4-10 pm | Saturday | May 20 | noon-11 pm Friday | May 19 | 4-11 pm | Sunday | May 21 | noon-10 pm Unlimited ride wristbands will cost $30 a day. Mega Passes will cost $45 in advance or $50 at the gate, and will provide unlimited rides for all four days of the carnival.

Since 2012, District 2 has partnered with the Village of Bensenville to sponsor this event, which has been a great success. Last year, it raised $13,426 to benefit Rotary, Youth Coalition, Bandits, Boy Scouts and the school PTA/Os that provided volunteers to work the ticket booth.

BSD2 SUMMER INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS Summer School: Offered June 12-30 at Tioga School, this program focuses on reading, writing and math, and provides an opportunity for students to focus in on areas in which they need improvement.

JumpStart: Offered June 19-30 at Blackhawk Middle School, this program provides incoming sixth graders with opportunities to learn more about their new school.

STEM/Enrichment: This program provides hands-on learning opportunities for students who are interested in exploring, inventing, and discovering. It is offered at Tioga School and divided into different weeklong classes: June 12-16 for current third and fourth graders, June 19-23 for current fifth graders, and June 26-30 for current sixth and seventh graders.

FREE SUMMER BREAKFAST AND LUNCH PROGRAM

Blackhawk Middle School will hold its eighth-grade promotion ceremony on Tuesday, June 6, in the field house at Fenton High School, 1000 Green Street, Bensenville. Families of students participating in the promotion ceremony receive a total of six tickets. Students should arrive at 6:30 pm. The ceremony starts at 7 pm.

Bensenville School District 2 will serve FREE breakfast and lunch to anyone 18 years and younger this summer.

Children playing with fire cause hundreds of deaths and injuries each year.

Preschoolers and kindergartners are most likely to start these fires, typically by playing with matches and lighters, and are most likely to die in them.

• Children experience fire interest. They may ask questions such as how hot is fire or show an interest in fire through playing with fire trucks or cooking on a play stove. This is healthy, and it is time to begin educating about fire.

• Firestarting happens when children begin to experiment with fire using matches and lighters. Many fires happen when young children are left alone, even for a short period of time, and have access to matches and lighters. Parents must have clear rules and consequences about fire misuse.

• Grown-ups can help keep fire out of the hands of children.

• Store matches and lighters out of children’s reach and sight, up high, preferably in a locked cabinet or container.

• Never leave matches or lighters in a bedroom or any place where children may go without supervision.

• Teach young children and school-age children to tell a grown-up if they see matches or lighters. Children need to understand that fire is difficult to control, it is fast and can hurt as soon as it touches you.

• A child with an interest in fire can lead to fire starting and result in repeated firesetting behavior.

• It is important for grown-ups to discourage unsupervised fire starts.

• Never use lighters or matches as a source of amusement for children; they may imitate you.

• Never assign a young child any tasks that involve the use of a lighter or matches (lighting candles, bringing a lighter to an adult to light a cigarette or the fireplace, etc.)

• If your child expresses curiosity about fire or has been playing with fire, calmly but firmly explain that matches and lighters are tools for adults only.

• Use only lighters designed with child-resistant features.

Remember, child-resistant does not mean child-proof.

Important!

Children and fire are a deadly combination.

Some children play with fire out of curiosity, not realizing its danger.

Troubled children may set a fire as a way of acting out their anger, disappointment or frustration.

If you suspect your child is intentionally setting fires or unusually fascinated with fire, get help. Your local fire department, school, or community counseling agency can put you in touch with trained experts who know how to teach children about fire in an appropriate way.
