BENSENVILLE PARK DISTRICT SUMMER CAMPS BEGIN JUNE 11TH The Bensenville Park District Summer Day Camp Program offers a noncompetitive atmosphere where youngsters can socially interact and participate in a variety of activities. Children 6-10 will enjoy either Adventure Camp or Sports Camp and ages 11-15 will like the variety of activities offered at Teen Camp.

Camp fees for these full-time camps include a free healthy lunch provided by the Northern Illinois Food Bank, weekly field trips, visits to the Bensenville Water Park and more. Parents may pick and choose their child’s camp days and have the opportunity to secure before and after camp care services.

Other camps offered include Fischer Farm’s Discovery Camp held June 11- July 20 and part-time camps for ages 2-5, Tot Camp and Sunshine Camp. For more information email camps@bensenvilleparkdistrict.org.

CIVIL WAR REENACTMENT WEEKEND

SATURDAY | JUNE 23 & SUNDAY | JUNE 24 | 10AM-3PM Step back in time one hundred and fifty years during one of the most significant events in our history. There will be a rally for drills in the morning and a skirmish in the afternoon as well as first-person presentations throughout the day.

Attendees will be able to meet the soldiers, listen to music, and learn about civilian life during this time. The canon will be fired at 11am, 12pm and 1pm.

Admission fees are $5 for adults and children under 13 are $2; pay at the event.

District 100 meetings are held at 7 pm in the Academic Resource Center (ARC) at Fenton Community High School. Parents and community members are invited to attend.

Fenton High School District 100 and the Board of Education and the Strategic Plan Committee are excited to have completed the Strategic Plan. The committee was composed of students, parents, community members, staff, teachers, administrators, and board members. This strategic plan is District 100’s roadmap, telling us why we are going there, and what functions and resources we need to get there.

The plan established a mission, beliefs, goals, and action plans for the school district. We believe a strategic plan will improve student achievement, create focused curriculum initiatives, improve communication between the school and community, provide direction for the staff, administrators and board of education, align budget process, and establishes uniformity among stakeholders towards accomplishing prioritized goals.

FENTON HIGH SCHOOL RELEASES 2017-18 FIRST SEMESTER HONOR ROLL Fenton Community High School has named 882 students to the first semester honor roll for the 2017-18 school year, based on their exemplary academic performance.

Students achieving a 3.5 or higher are recognized with High Honors and students achieving a 3.0 – 3.4999 grade point average are recognized with Honors. The complete list can be found on the Fenton 100 website.

COMMUNITY CERAMIC TOTEM POLE Fenton High School Art Teacher JoAnna Rieger received a grant from the Bensenville Art Council to create a ceramic totem that will be installed outside the football field/art patio and is offering a hands on community art experience. The purpose of this project was to unite our community, provide wellness, and allow for positive expression through art.

Volunteers were guided in the planning and creating of this permanent sculpture to be installed outside the Fenton High School track and field.

This artwork will welcome many for years to come. Three handcrafted ceramic totems, known as Welcome Poles, are the final outcome.

Students, FHS staff, and community members of all ages were invited to join this free art experience. Four 3-hour hands on sessions were offered to create the totem segments. The unveiling of the final project will be May 17.

REGISTER NOW FOR THE SENIOR AND DISABLED GRASS CUTTING PROGRAM! Village President, Frank DeSimone, is proud to roll out a Village Grass Cutting Program for senior and disabled Bensenville residents. This program will provide Bensenville seniors and disabled residents grass cutting services for their home at a discounted rate. The program provides weekly grass cutting, blowing of excess grass clippings, a spring cleanup in the first week of service and bagging of clippings in the month of October at no extra charge.

The cost of the program is $7.50 per cut. Additional services include edging for $2.50 per cut as well as bagging and disposal of clippings for $2.50 per cut. Edging and bagging services must be chosen for the full season.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE PROGRAM • Residents must be 65 and older or disabled/handicapped with no one else in the household that can cut the grass.

• Each household resident must provide documentation of ownership and senior status or demonstrate disability status (via Secretary of State License Disability Place card or registration of disability with the Illinois Department of Aging).

• Must demonstrate a combined income of $55,000.00 or less to participate in the program.

ATTEND A NEIGHBORHOOD & BUSINESS WATCH MEETING Neighborhood & Business Watch Meetings occur once a month in the community room of the Bensenville Police Department and begin at 7PM. Meetings include discussions on relevant topics like the opioid epidemic, expectations for the legalization of marijuana, and expectations and best practices during traffic stops.

English meetings occur the third Thursday of every month and Spanish meetings occur the fourth Thursday of every month.

FLY QUIET ROTATION UPDATE The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently conducting environmental testing for the Interim Fly Quiet Runway Rotation Plan which was passed by the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission back in December. Once testing is completed and the plan is passed by the FAA in about a year, the Runway Rotation Plan will be implemented.

The Village understands that the current conditions are frustrating, but the Village is continually advocating for our residents. We expect this new rotation plan to help spread the noise more evenly around O’Hare and help provide some relief during the night time hours. During this time, we strongly encourage residents to submit a noise complaint to the Chicago Department of Aviation by calling 800.435.9569 or visiting www.flychicago.com/community/ORDnoise/Complaints/pages/default.aspx.

MUSIC IN THE PARK 2018 Everyone’s favorite and free, family summer concert series, Music in the Park begins June 13th and has something to offer for all musical tastes. Bensenville restaurants will sell dinner and dessert items so families can have dinner in the park prior to the concert. Each concert night will also include a classic car night and there is always a 50/50 split the pot raffle that benefits our community.

LIBERTYFEST & FOURTH OF JULY PARADE Come and enjoy all the festivities taking place at the Bensenville 4th of July Parade and Libertyfest celebration! Participants are already registering for our Independence Day Parade featuring some of the best bands, floats, and entertainment from around the region. We will also have live entertainment, food and drink, activities for all ages followed by a mega-fireworks display. The parade will begin at 10 am at town center downtown and will go South on York Road, East on Jefferson Street and will end at Redmond Park. To volunteer, please call 630.350.3405.

REGISTER NOW FOR A CAR SEAT GIVEAWAY ON JUNE 23RD Village President Frank DeSimone and the Village of Bensenville are partnering up with the Bensenville Chamber of Commerce to host a Car Seat Giveaway and Installation Event.

This event is available to incorporated Bensenville residents only and proof of residency is required. Car seats are available for children weighing 5 lbs to 40 lbs. To ensure they are installed correctly, professionals will be on site to provide direction and answer any questions you may have while you are installing your car seat. This event begins at 9 am on Saturday, June 23rd rain or shine in the Bensenville Public Works Garage, located at 717 East Jefferson Street in Bensenville. Due to a limited quantity of car seats, pre-registration to reserve your car seat is required by Friday, June 15th. To register, please call 630.594.1010 for English or 630.594.1005 for Spanish.

PUBLIC WORKS OPEN HOUSE—JULY 7TH The Village of Bensenville’s Public Works Department is hosting a free Open House for the community on Saturday, July 7th from 10 am to 2 pm. This unique experience will allow you to get a behind-the-scenes look at the skills, tools and equipment required to maintain the Village’s infrastructure. Activities will include a water quality presentation, activities for the kids, facility tours, an Arbor Day celebration and tree planting at 11 am, a barbeque lunch and much more. PAPER SHREDDING EVENT VEHICLE STICKERS ON SALE STARTING JUNE 1ST

The Village will host a shredding event on Saturday, July 7th from 10 am – noon. The event will take place at the Public Works Facility, 717 East Jefferson in conjunction with the Public Works Open House. Open to incorporated residents only (no businesses) may bring up to 2 banker boxes of paper for shredding, no binders.

Persons will be required to stay in the vehicle. Shredding occurs on-site.

COMMUNITY YARD SALE—JUNE 7-10TH

All vehicles registered or housed in the Village of Bensenville must purchase and display a vehicle sticker. Buy online and save $2.00 for a regular passenger sticker. Vehicle stickers must be purchased by June 30th. New residents and new vehicle purchases do not need to pay a penalty as long as the sticker is purchased within 30 days of move-in date, or the date the new vehicle was purchased.

Residents are encouraged to clean up and cash in by holding household yard sales the extended weekend of Thursday, June 7th through Sunday, June 10th. The more yard sales held, the more buyers come to our community. Complete a yard sale application and obtain a free yard sale permit from Village Hall. The deadline to turn in your yard sale permit is Friday, June 1st. A list of addresses participating will be posted on the Village website a week before the event. Senior Sticker: Seniors (65 years or older at time of purchase) can purchase a maximum of two (2) stickers per household at the senior rate of $1.00. Each vehicle must be registered to a senior in order to receive the discounted rate. The senior sticker is valid for two years.

GARBAGE PICK UP REMINDER While doing your spring cleaning, please remember what can and cannot be accepted on regular trash collection days. Republic Services which is the Village’s waste management agency, offers a variety of services to Bensenville residents.

These services include bulk waste pick up and appliance recycling. Items that do not fit in your trash container such as large furniture, appliances, carpet, mattresses, refrigerators and washing machines can be picked up by completing a service request online or over the phone. FREE MULCH PROGRAM FOR INCORPORATED BENSENVILLE RESIDENTS On Saturday April 7th, the Village of Bensenville began offering FREE recycled triple ground mulch to incorporated Bensenville residents. This opportunity is the result of in town brush pickups, tree trimmings and tree removals. This is Bensenville’s environmental initiative to recycle our material and reinvest back into the community.

Mulch is available 7 days a week at the Public Works Facility parking lot at 717 East Jefferson Street (right across Redmond Park) and is accessible at the NE corner in a concrete bin for residents to help themselves. Residents are responsible for loading their own mulch, containers, shovels and their own transportation. The property is under surveillance - please be respectful of other residents and the Public Works Facility.

Each year, District 2’s Making a Difference unit helps its third graders develop 21st century learning skills, which are often referred to as the four Cs — collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication.

During this problem-based service learning unit, students learn about influential people around the world who made a difference by overcoming hardships. They do so through close readings, read-alouds, book analyses, persuasive writing exercises, and other instructional activities. Then — through whole-class, small-group, and partner discussions — the students begin to relate the world around them to the real-life problems and solutions these influential people used to make a difference. They begin to develop solutions to the problems they’re facing in their own lives.

World hunger is one such problem, and the next phase of this unit has traditionally provided the District’s third graders with an opportunity to address that issue through a community service project with Feed My Starving Children. Students raise funding to help this non-profit organization purchase ingredients for nutritionally complete meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. Then they visit Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg to hand pack the meals, which are then donated to the organization’s food partners around the world.

Third graders at Tioga School continued this tradition, visiting Feed My Starving Children in March. But W.A. Johnson School’s third graders decided to keep their service learning project closer to home this year, and instead are collecting items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and shampoo to distribute at upcoming Food for Families pop-up pantry events at Johnson.

Upon completing these service learning projects, both sets of students demonstrate what they have learned about community service by creating and sharing a presentation titled I Made a Difference. Students complete this unit by learning about young people whose small ideas made big differences in their communities, and by picking an influential person that they have learned about and awarding him or her the Nobel Peace Prize.

BSD2 SUMMER INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS Bensenville School District 2 is offering two exciting learning opportunities for third- through seventh-grade students this summer.

Jump Start This session provides incoming sixth graders opportunities to meet sixth-grade teachers, make new friends, and learn about Blackhawk Middle School. Teachers will help students become successful at the middle school by exposing students to basic middle school routines such as locker combinations, lunchroom procedures, and following schedules. In addition, the students will be introduced to the sixth-grade math and English/language arts curriculums.

STEM/Enrichment Third- through seventh-grade students will explore various aspects of science, math, art, and engineering with fun-filled, hands-on activities. This session is a great way for students interested in STEM to experience real-world applications in the STEM fields through drones, coding, LEGO Mindstorms robots, 3D printing, Rube Goldberg projects, Minecraft, and so much more! Each day will be filled with opportunities to explore, invent, and discover while creating, testing and collaborating. Students will learn how to problem solve and think critically through a variety of engaging activities.

Medical oxygen adds a higher percentage of oxygen to the air a patient uses to breathe. Fire needs oxygen to burn. If a fire should start in an oxygen-enriched area, the material burning will burn more quickly.
