This event includes a pancake, tater tots, sausage, and egg breakfast, a photo-op with the Easter Bunny, as well as other crafts and activities. Buses will be available for those with limited transportation, bus route information will be available one week prior to event.

This spring exhibition will feature recent work from artists at the People’s Resource Center (PRC), a non-profit dedicated to serving the residents of DuPage County. PRC provides a variety of free services for people including art classes. We will display many different kinds of artwork such as paintings, ceramics, and mixed media pieces. We invite the public to join us for a reception celebrating the artists and their work. Art will be on display beginning in early March.

THE FANTASTICAL WORKINGS OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM SATURDAY | MARCH 23 @ 2:00 PM

Historian Jim Gibbons will discuss the lives and works of the Brothers Grimm, such as Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and many more. Gibbons will explain how the two brothers’ 19th century fairy tales still live on – generations after their own deaths, and how they set a precedent for the fairy tales of today.

Colonel Robert R. McCormick was the iconic owner, editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune from 1911 until his death in 1955.

Before his nearly 45-year career as a printing and publishing visionary, and radio and television pioneer, Robert McCormick was a WWI artillery officer, which influenced his life immeasurably. Join Jeffrey Anderson, the Interpretation Manager and Volunteer Coordinator at Robert R. McCormick House to learn more about this monumental figure.

INTEREXCHANGE ENGLISH/SPANISH LANGUAGE CONVERSATION GROUP TUESDAYS FROM 6:00 – 7:00 PM | BEGINS TUESDAY, MARCH 12 This group is open to all English and Spanish speakers interested in learning each other’s language. The conversation group will speak for half of the hour in English and the other half of the hour in Spanish so everyone will have the opportunity to practice their second language. SIGN UP FOR THE BENSENVILLE FACES PROJECT Do you live, work or play in the Village of Bensenville? If so, then you are one of the many diverse faces that make up our community and we invite you to participate in the BENSENVILLE FACES PROJECT. To participate, simply send your name, phone and email address to FACES@bensenville.il.us along with your favorite head & shoulder photo. We will turn that photo into a line drawing, and then invite you to register for one of several paint/collage events to be held around town over the next few months. At the events, you will be given all the supplies necessary to make a collage portrait of yourself along with an instructor to guide you through creating your own work of art. Once complete, we will photograph the final artwork to be printed on metal and displayed in town as part of the art installation. You will keep your original artwork.

The Bensenville Faces Community Art Project is supported by a Picture This Visual Arts MiniGrant from the JCS Fund, a donor-advised fund of The DuPage Foundation.

VILLAGE BOARD APPROVES FIVE YEAR CONTRACT WITH REPUBLIC SERVICES AT REDUCED RATE In October 2018, Village President Frank DeSimone and the Village Board approved a five-year agreement with Republic Services. This agreement will lower monthly refuse and recycling payments by $2.03. Because of macroeconomic changes in global refuse and recycling policies, there will be a $0.25 fee per month on all accounts. Senior households will continue to receive a 15% discount on their regular garbage rate. The annual increase will be 3% each year beginning in 2020. The approval of this agreement continues Republic Services high quality customer service while reducing costs for Bensenville residents.

DOWNLOAD THE YOURGOV CITIZEN REQUEST APP The YourGov App allows Bensenville residents to report non-emergency related issues to the Village. This application can be used via website, mobile phone, or tablet. By using YourGov, you can submit an issue and track its progress from submission to completion. Issues are submitted to the Village’s work management program where they can be forwarded on to the appropriate department. The YourGov application should not be used to request overnight street parking. For emergency matters, residents should still call 911 immediately. Any requests not specifically listed on the YourGov app should be reported to the Share a Concern Center at 630.594.1515.

SENIOR INFORMATIONAL HOTLINE 630.350.3426 Finding the answers to your questions can sometimes be confusing. The Senior Informational Hotline is available to provide basic information about Village programs and services. Our goal is to help Bensenville Senior Citizens easily navigate their way through the various government departments and agencies. The hotline is a comprehensive resource for information on a full range of questions that pertain to village services.

BUILDING PERMIT REMINDER Spring is just around the corner and with nice weather comes the opportunity for many home improvement projects. For many of these projects, you are required to obtain a building permit. For questions regarding building permits, stop by the Village Hall Community and Economic Development counter or call 630.350.3413.

BE PREPARED WITH CODERED ALERT SYSTEMS The Village of Bensenville uses CodeRED as one way to alert residents and businesses of emergency situations and provide up to date information. This system uses a database of phone numbers including land lines and cell phone numbers. Multiple numbers can be submitted for each person or business. A CodeRED message will have the caller ID # (866) 419-5000 for emergencies. We suggest that you program this number into your cell phone as a new contact and use CodeRED as the contact name.

REPUBLIC SERVICES collects April through November: individual branches less than three feet in length and one inch in diameter on your regular trash collection day from your regular collection point. Place in biodegradable paper bags or garbage cans with two Yard Waste Only labels attached. Yard Waste Only stickers can be picked up for free at the Village Hall.

Republic Services collects these branches with other residential yard waste.

To discard root balls, break them up into small enough pieces to fit into your trash container for Republic Services to collect.

Friday before the scheduled collection week, but no later than 7:00 am on the first Monday of each month. Each street receives a single collection during a scheduled week; placing brush or branches out after the deadline can result in a citation and no pickup.

VILLAGE CREWS collect larger brush on the first full week of each month from April through November.

Place cut ends of brush and branches towards the street. Individual branches must not exceed six inches in diameter or ten feet in length. Brush may be placed on the parkway for collection beginning the

SPRING STORM PREPAREDNESS

Beginning in April, the Village of Bensenville will offer FREE recycled triple ground mulch to incorporated Bensenville residents. This opportunity is the result of in town brush pickups, tree trimmings and tree removals. This is one of Bensenville’s environmental initiative to recycle our material and reinvest back into the community. Mulch is available 7 days a week at the Public Works Facility parking lot at 717 E. Jefferson Street (right across the Redmond pond) and is accessible at the NE corner in a concrete bin for residents to help themselves. Residents are responsible for loading their own mulch, containers, shovels and their own transportation. The property is under surveillance please be respectful of other residents and the Public Works Facility.

Each Year in March, the National Weather Service designates the first full week as Severe Weather Preparedness Week. This is the time to review severe weather (i.e. tornado) preparedness, review the difference between a Watch and Warning and review when Watch or Warnings can be issued. Take the time to review what steps you can take to protect yourself and loved ones by designating where the best place to go for safety is located. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) recognized over 21,000 students from 757 high schools as 2019 State Scholars, including 31 from Fenton High School. Illinois State Scholar winners rank in the top ten percent of high school seniors. Selection is based on SAT or ACT scores, and/or class rank at the end of their junior year. High school guidance counselors work in conjunction with the ISAC to determine the winners.

21ST CENTURY GRANT UPDATE Last spring, Fenton applied for a competitive grant called the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant. Fenton along with District 2 were recipients of the five-year-grant. Below is a quick summary of the grant, and how it will be implemented at Fenton.

The purpose of the grant is to provide students after school enrichment opportunities in the areas of art, music, fitness, social emotional, and tutoring. Starting this January, we began to offer our students the following after school and Saturday opportunities, which we will call Bison Cultural Connections.

FENTON PROJECT BASED LEARNING A Documentary in the Making Eric Richter, a freelance director, editor, videographer as well as a Fenton Alum (‘02) has returned to the classroom today to Rebecca Norris’ 5th hour Film Study class to speak about making documentaries. Mr. Richter, who grew up in Bensenville and now resides in Chicago, creates stylized and original feature length and short films, music videos, documentaries, branded content and commercials.

He shared that some of his experiences include working with the Hornets NBA basketball team, when they were in Oklahoma City and in New Orleans, after college.

After that he returned to the Chicago area to work with a record label.

It all began with volunteering and carrying a camera all the time, just to stay involved.

“Students today have phones in their hands and that makes it exciting” says Eric, “this is a new generation of filmmakers.”

Students in Ms. Norris’ class watched a trailer of his work and a few clips from his movies in preparation for their own documentary projects to begin next week. Eric answered questions and explained the process of creating movies and for a documentary to help them plan. For their documentary, they will plan, film, interview, and edit projects on topics or issues of their choosing to create their PBL project!

“I thought the speaker was amazing showing us his documentary, other movies, and giving us advice we were interested in. I was really interested because I’ve been wanting to do a documentary centering on a concert or show, like he did, so I thought it was really cool of him showing us his work with music, said Film student, Justice Newsome. I’m kinda nervous for the upcoming project, but I am already planning what to do. I’ll be documenting my brother who works with individuals who have down syndrome and other mental illnesses.”

As he was leaving the building he told Ms. Norris, “If it was not for Film Study at Fenton High School, I would not have gone to Columbia College in Chicago and pursued my dream of becoming a filmmaker. I think this class is awesome for all students to take whether they are college bound or not.”

SPRING MUSICAL ILMEA All-State Choir and Music

Our Spring musical will be Working based on the book by Studs Terkel. It is a musical telling the stories of various workers through interviews. TRI-DISTRICT FINE ARTS CONNECTION The Tri-District Choral Festival is a long standing tradition for more than the last 15 years between the Fenton High School, Wood Dale Junior High and Blackhawk Middle School choral departments. This event provides the opportunity for vertical articulation of the three programs through a day of workshop, rehearsal and performance. In alignment with the Illinois Arts (Music) Standards (#6-Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work) all of the students have worked to prepare a common piece within their respective programs and then bring it together at the festival. The Festival not only consists of a day rich in musical experiences and learning, but also allows for the Fenton students to connect with future Fenton students. Topics Jazz band and swing choir (both extracurricular) toured Wood Dale discussed within small and large groups and Junior High, Blackhawk Middle School and performed for activities consist of: The Bison Way, Be Real, Bridgeway of Bensenville’s nursing home residents. extra-curricular and elective opportunities and a question and answer session about “life as a FHS student”. We are so thankful that we have had this opportunity to not only bridge the gap between the three schools, provide an opportunity to meet the social emotional needs of many of our current and incoming students, but also establish a PLC of the choral music educators involved.

When the dismissal bells ring at Tioga and W.A. Johnson Schools, dozens of students a day are now sticking around to learn Spanish, Latin dance, drama, and visual arts.

At Blackhawk Middle School, a new digital media after-school program is teaching students the basic concepts of audio production using storytelling and beats, and a drama program is in the works.

“This is an exciting time in District 2, as these are just the first of many exciting opportunities for students that will be provided by the new RISE Academies that are taking shape at District 2’s schools,” said Dr. James Stelter, District 2 Superintendent.

RISE stands for Resources Invested in School Enrichment, and a $3 million grant from the Illinois State Board of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants program will provides $150,000 a year for the next five years to fund critical community schools initiatives at each of District 2’s three schools and at Fenton High School.

Known as the Peer-Assisted Learning Squad – or PALS – the club’s missions is for students of all abilities to build strong and positive relationships and memories.

Blackhawk debuts its new Peer-Assisted Learning Squad.

Students from every corner of Blackhawk Middle School – including the school’s new Academic Life Skills (ALS) class from the North DuPage Special Education Cooperative (NDSEC) – came together in December to form a peer-led inclusion club for students of all abilities.

“It’s amazing to see so many students be excited to create an inclusive school community,” said Brooke Smith, a PALS sponsor and special education teacher at Blackhawk.

PALS has quickly attracted a sizeable following, as more than 60 students have participated in the club’s bi-weekly after-school socials in which they’ve enjoyed decorating Christmas cookies, playing cards and board games, and celebrating Valentine’s Day. “I couldn’t have imagined a better inclusion opportunity for my students and all the students involved,” said Katie Kaepplinger, who teaches the NDSEC ALS class at Blackhawk.

District 2 teacher Amy Stewart authors her first book, Little Readers, Big Thinkers: Teaching Close Reading in the Primary Grades.

Young learners are full of questions and wonderings, so much so that sometimes they need a guide for their curiosity.

Mrs. Stewart provides that guide in Little Readers, Big Thinkers, outlining a manageable approach to close reading that helps teachers harness the big thinking they know is inside their inquisitive students’ minds.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION Incoming kindergarten students will be able to register for the 2019-20 school year on Tuesday, March 12, from 3-7 pm at either Tioga School, 212 W. Memorial Road, or W.A. Johnson School, 252 Ridgewood Avenue.

Students will need to register at their home school, so parents who are unsure which school their child will attend should call the Educational Administration Center at 630.766.5940.

“Kids are always thinking and thinking is always happening—even when your teacher eyes don’t really know for sure, and even when you least expect it,” says Mrs. Stewart, In Little Readers, Big Thinkers, Mrs. Stewart showcases ways that close reading can teach even the youngest students new ways to enjoy texts, think about them critically, and share that thinking with peers and adults.

Parents also need to bring their child to kindergarten registration so the student can be assessed for kindergarten.

For the past four years, Mrs. Stewart has served as a consulting teacher, providing literacy coaching and professional development to her colleagues across District 2. Her classroom teaching experiences are in kindergarten and third grade.

SMART SUMMER FUN!

District 2’s STEM camps and JumpStart program will offer exciting learning opportunities for students this summer.

STEM Camps | Explore! Build! Create! Students in Grades 3-7 can develop their creative problem-solving skills through a variety of different one-week camps filled with fun, hands-on activities designed to spark students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and math.

JumpStart | Incoming sixth graders can meet teachers, make new friends, and learn about Blackhawk through this fun and informative program. JumpStart will help them transition from elementary to middle school by introducing them to the sixth-grade math and English/language arts curriculums, and by exposing them to new routines such as locker combinations, lunchroom procedures, and class schedules.

Registration forms – including dates, times, and other details that are still being finalized – will be available Monday, April 1, in schools’ front offices, and must be submitted – along with a $25 non-refundable registration fee – by Friday, April 26.
