SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! The Bensenville Short Film Festival returns to the Bensenville Theater for its third exciting season at 7pm on Thursday, March 7, 2024. Come enjoy the unique and fascinating work of film makers from around the world as chosen by the festival’s producers, the Bensenville Arts Council. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance or at the door, if available. All film makers are invited to submit their work prior to the deadline of February 1. BUILDING A BETTER PLAYGROUND Village seeks students’ input on Redmond Park improvements Want to know what makes a good playground? Ask a first, second, or third grader! That’s exactly what Village President Frank DeSimone did while visiting Tioga and Johnson Schools in November. The students’ feedback will be used in the Village of Bensenville’s ongoing efforts to beautify Redmond Park and improve its amenities for kids and families.

Take, for example, the District’s annual Giving Tree program.

Each fall, our school social workers and classroom teachers work together to identify students from families that may not be able to afford gifts, and anonymously invite them to share their children’s wish lists and clothing needs. BSD2 staff then volunteer to spend about $30 purchasing gifts for each student, and return their donations wrapped and ready to deliver to the students’ families before winter break.

district and makes our schools not just places of education, but true communities where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

The holidays are a time to reflect, celebrate, and - of course - give. That is why I am once again filled with gratitude for the incredible generosity of the BSD2 community.

Our schools thrive because of the collective efforts of every individual within our community. Your generous contributions, both big and small, help create an environment where students feel supported, valued, and encouraged to reach their full potential. It is this spirit that makes our schools not just places of learning, but places where we grow together as a community.

This year, BSD2 staff generously donated approximately $5,130 in gifts for 171 students from 60 different families in need through this annual Giving Tree program.

5ESSENTIALS Annual survey allows students, parents and teachers to weigh in on school climate and learning conditions Each year, District 2 administers the Illinois 5Essentials Survey to provide an opportunity for teachers, students, and parents across the District to have a role in improving their schools. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive assessment of school organizational culture with actionable reports to help drive school improvement on five essential indicators of success: Effective Leaders | Collaborative Teachers | Involved Families | Supportive Environment | Ambitious Instruction Between Tuesday, January 23, and Friday, March 29, teachers, students and parents will be asked to take the 15-minute researchbased 5Essentials survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s climate and learning conditions.

On January 23, parents can visit bsd2.org/5essentials to complete the Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey.

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS Fifth graders at Johnson and Tioga research their families’ roots for heritage project presentations Before Thanksgiving break, fifth-grade students at Tioga and W.A. Johnson Schools shared their heritage projects with their classmates, families, and teachers. For these projects, the students presented facts and displayed artifacts related to their heritage’s history, traditions, culture, and food.

The 2023 Illinois Report Cards are available online for BSD2 schools

OpenSciEd experiments turn BMS students into science discoverers

The Illinois State Board of Education annually releases school report cards that show how each school, each district, and the state is performing on a wide range of educational goals.

The report cards also include summative designations that account for each school’s overall performance, as well as the performances of seven demographic subgroups of students. This designation takes into account students’ growth and proficiency levels in English/language arts, math, and science, as well as schools’ attendance rates and their results in the Illinois 5Essentials school climate survey.

Both Tioga and W.A. Johnson Schools maintained Commendable designations this year. While Blackhawk Middle School’s cumulative score also ranked well within the “Commendable” range, it received a Targeted designation indicating a need to increase support for our English Learners (EL) subgroup.

During the November 15 meeting of the BSD2 Board of Education, District Administrators reviewed next steps in addressing the District’s curricular priorities. Those plans included increased support for all of the District’s EL students, and strategies to address increases in chronic absenteeism and truancy across the District.

Become a parapro, and become a part of our classrooms We’re hiring paraprofessionals to serve in a variety of different capacities.

What’s a paraprofessional? Good question – they’re vital members of so many of our classrooms.

Parapros serve as instructional aides, assisting in classroom settings under the supervision of certified teachers. Many of them work one on one with students to meet their unique needs.

• Assisting with the preparation and adoption of instructional materials.

• Assisting with the supervision, escorting, and instruction of students, as directed.

• Assisting the teacher with all aspects of the daily instructional program.

• Assisting with the maintenance of accurate records on student progress.

• Participating in staff development activities as directed by contract.

• Performing other duties as may be assigned by administration.

Paraprofessionals work 7 – 7.5 hours a day five days a week, and get summers, winter and spring break, and holidays off. As full-time employees, they qualify for the District’s insurance benefits, and they contribute toward IMRF pension plans. Their pay starts at $16.50 per hour, and those serving in bilingual and special education roles receive annual stipends ranging from $1,300 to $1,950.

OpenSciEd’s phenomenabased approach to learning inspires students to lead in questioning, investigating, and solving problems. At each step, students use science and engineering practices to figure out pieces of the scientific idea they are investigating. Each piece they figure out adds to their developing understanding of the phenomenon they are exploring.

“We are so excited about these new hand-on learning experiences we’re providing Blackhawk students in their science classes,” said Dr. Anne Paonessa, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning. “They’re aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, and they are designed for how students learn science best.”

Parapros must have excellent communication skills, basic computer knowledge, and a paraprofessional license. Anyone 19 or older who holds a high school diploma or equivalent now qualifies for a DuPage County ShortTerm Approval Paraprofessional License.

Happy New Year! We have a lot of exciting news and plans for 2024! As a resident and member of our community, we want you to glow with Bison Pride.

Construction Update We are nearing the completion of our $10 million water mitigation project. The underground stormwater storage tank and the pipes that feed it are installed. Our new track surface is mostly done as well. Soon we will lay the new turf and construct a new bathroom building next to our concessions stand. This project is critical to all future work at Fenton. Removing water and preventing further damage is vital.

STEM Wing The design phase of our $32 million STEM project is very far along. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This new addition will feature a variety of modern classrooms and learning spaces in these subject areas.

Over the last few months our administrators and teachers have met with architects and construction officials to mold this new gem into the best and most exciting learning space in DuPage County. We plan to break ground in the summer of 2024, with an anticipated construction timeline of at least 15 months.

The STEM and Water Mitigation Projects are being funded through a combination of cash reserves and non-referendum bonds (loans), which will not raise your taxes.

German Exchange Over the summer we were fortunate to send 20 students to Rottweil Germany for a few weeks as part of an exchange program. This is part of our continuing effort to encourage and celebrate our multicultural roots. The students did aggressive fundraising to cover their costs, but we couldn’t have pulled it off without a very generous grant from the Bensenville Community Foundation.

Then in late October and early November, the 20 German students who hosted us came to Bensenville and Wood Dale to experience two weeks in the Fenton Family. Again, after aggressive fundraising, the Bensenville Community Foundation approved another grant to bridge the gap and allow us to honor our commitment.

Thank you to Fenton School Board Members Kent Kovac and John Radzinski for telling our story beautifully and securing these local grants. Thank you to the Bensenville Community Foundation for supporting our students and families in this unique learning experience.

FBI SHARES TIPS OF THE TRADE Special Agents from the Chicago division of the FBI visited Criminal Justice Classes with Ms. Torres on October 17 and explained or demonstrated various methods of collecting forensic evidence.

After learning about techniques, students were able to try their own hand, including taking footwear impressions, lifting fingerprints, and trying on hazmat suits to collect fake chemicals (hand sanitizer).

These experiences are part of Fenton’s growing efforts to introduce students to potential careers after high school.

As part of an equity initiative a few years ago, the College Board created National Recognition Programs for students from underrepresented populations. These are highly respected honors that carry a lot of weight on a student’s college and scholarship applications.

“I’d like to thank all our families and teachers that made this possible. We could not have gotten this far without their support,” Alejandro Aguilar Carrera said during Fenton’s October Board of Education meeting.

High school students across the country are invited to apply if their PSAT or AP scores are within a certain range. They must also have a GPA of 3.5 or higher by the middle of their junior year.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate our students and recognize them for the great work they’ve been doing. We’re proud of their strong academic performance in the classroom and on College Board assessments like the PSAT and AP exams,” said Principal Sam Bentsen. “There’s so much that makes our students unique, and receiving this honor reinforces this as an asset for their future.”

In addition to secondary coursework, students also can earn college credit in a variety of course types, including Advanced Placement, dual credit, dual enrollment, and programs at the Technology Center of DuPage.

The U.S. News Best High Schools rankings include data on nearly 25,000 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Nearly 18,000 schools were ranked on six factors based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college.

By the end of the 2022-2023 school year, approximately 83% of our Class of 2023 graduates continued their education at a university, college, or trade school after leaving Fenton. Among that group, more than onethird earned scholarships collectively valued at $1.3 million.

Fenton is gaining momentum in the emerging Career Pathways program, which involves making sure every student has a potential career in mind by the time they graduate. FENTON’S JOSSLYN WADE IS AN ALL-STATE RUNNER

Congratulations to Sophomore Josslyn Wade, who qualified for the November 4 IHSA Cross Country State Finals and finished 16th out of 243 runners in the Class 2A meet. The top 25 runners are considered All-State Runners.

Josslyn finished the 3-mile race with a personal best time of 17:48.13. Josslyn is Fenton’s first female cross country runner in known school history to earn the All-State Runner designation.

Fenton celebrated Josslyn at the November 15 Board of Education meeting.

“I want to thank all my coaches, all my teammates, my family members, and everyone else who believed in me and stood by me as I ran this cross country season.

It was an amazing season,” Josslyn told the Fenton School Board.

Leading up to the State Finals, Josslyn advanced with a 19.09 time at the Woodstock Cross Country Sectional and a 18:52.2 time (2nd overall) at the Kaneland Regional.

FENTON’S LILY DU REACHES MILESTONE Congratulations to senior Lily Du for surpassing 500 career digs while playing for Fenton’s volleyball team. She eclipsed the rarely achieved milestone with 7 digs during Fenton’s Senior Night match against East Aurora on Tuesday, October 17.

“Lily has grown into this player that has become the X Factor in our matches,” Coach Adam Bloniarz said. “She is a Senior Captain and leads this team with her phenomenal passing and rocket serves. You will see her diving and rolling for every ball, creating these Wow moments in matches that makes your jaw drop! She takes pressure well and has flourished this season. She truly will be missed!”

Lily plans to attend College of DuPage and study interior design.

She encouraged younger teammates and future Bison to work hard, but always have fun.

“Don’t be so hard on yourself and remember to have fun on the court and not take it too seriously,” Lily said during Senior Night festivities. “Work hard for your spot, whether you start or are on the bench. And be nice to everyone on your team!”

Fischer Farm is offering a number of new programs, including Little Piggies and a Fiber Art Friday series offering those ages 8-12 classes in weaving, stuffies, felting and cross stitch. CHRISTMAS TREE DISPOSAL INFORMATION Christmas tree collection through Republic Services will occur the same day as your regularly scheduled refuse pickup throughout the month of January. If you do not want to send your Christmas tree to a landfill, trees can also be dropped off at the BENSENVILLE PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY (717 E Jefferson Street) to be chipped and used for local landscaping. Trees can be placed in the mulch bin (by the Public Works salt dome) through the end of January.

All tinsel, ornaments, lights, stands, and bags used for transportation must be removed. Only live/natural trees without flocking will be accepted (no garland or wreaths).

SNOW, ICE, AND COLD WEATHER REMINDERS With winter weather finally here, the Village reminds residents to take the following safety precautions this season: NO PARKING ON THE STREET | Permission for overnight parking on Village streets will not be granted after a snowfall of two inches (2”) or more. To ensure effective plowing and salting operations, vehicles must not be parked on streets or in alleys. Alley parking is prohibited at any time. Vehicles in violation will be ticketed and towed. Snow plowing or dumping snow from sidewalks and driveways onto public streets or public alleyways is prohibited.

PRACTICE SAFE DRIVING | Slower speeds, slower acceleration, slower steering, and slower braking all are required in winter driving conditions. Drop it and drive. Put down the handheld devices – it, too, is the law in Illinois. Don’t crowd the plow.

PACK A WINTER STORM KIT IN YOUR VEHICLE | Did you know each winter approximately 810 traffic crashes occur per day in Illinois? We remind residents to prepare their vehicles for optimal operation and to pack a winter storm kit to use if stranded.

HONOR FLIGHT CHICAGO LAW ENFORCEMENT HOCKEY CLASSIC MARCH 23 This year’s Honor Flight Chicago Law Enforcement Hockey Classic at the Edge Ice Arena is scheduled for March 23rd!

This is a charity hockey game featuring players from the FBI going up against Chicago Police Officers. Funds raised by Honor Flight Chicago go directly towards the cost of flying WWII and Korean War veterans to visit their memorials in Washington D.C. CLEAR SNOW FROM AROUND FIRE HYDRANTS | In an emergency, every second counts! If there is a fire hydrant near your home, the Village encourages residents to do their part to keep it accessible during snowy months. Remove any snow or ice and clear a three-foot perimeter around the fire hydrant to allow firefighters enough space to work.

Show your appreciation for the Bensenville Police Department on January 9th! Here are a few things you can do to show your support to the Bensenville Police Department:

• Tie a blue ribbon around your tree.

• Thank police officers on your business’s marquee.

• Write a letter to our police department thanking them for their service.

• Put a blue lightbulb in a light in the front of your home.

• Wear blue on January 9th.

• Share a positive police story on social media.

• If you see a police officer in person, thank them!

The temporary outdoor ice rink is now installed in downtown Bensenville. Once suitable for skating, it will be available to the public daily from dawn to dusk. Remember to check the flagpole near the rink for skating conditions. A green flag indicates that skating is permitted and a red flag indicates that skating is not permitted due to unsafe conditions.

BENSENVILLE THEATRE PHASE 1 RENOVATIONS We are thrilled to announce the restoration of the Bensenville Theatre! As part of an effort to preserve our community’s heritage, we are embarking on Phase 1 of the exterior renovation project, which aims to restore the iconic 1927 façade and marquee to their original art deco splendor but with modern technology.

Phase 1 will focus on revitalizing the theatre’s exterior, giving it a stunning makeover that harks back to its historic roots. A new marquee will be designed to capture the charm and elegance of the original design from 1927. The masonry façade will also undergo careful restoration to ensure it reflects the architectural grandeur of yesteryears. During the Phase I renovation, the theatre and ice cream shop will remain open for business but there may be temporary changes to access points around the theatre. We will make every effort to minimize any inconvenience to our valued patrons.

TRANSPORTATION FOR SENIOR & DISABLED RESIDENTS Did you know that the Village of Bensenville utilizes the Ride DuPage Transportation Program to provide low cost transportation to seniors and persons with disabilities in Bensenville?

Finding the answers to questions can sometimes be confusing. The Village’s Senior Information Hotline provides basic information about Village programs and services. Our goal is to help Bensenville senior citizens easily navigate their way through the various government departments and agencies. Call 630.350.3426 to speak with a representative.

• Ride DuPage participants are able to travel anywhere within DuPage County.

• Service will be available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week / 365 days per year.

• Trip requests will be accepted up to 7 days in advance with a minimum of one day in advance to guarantee a trip.

• Subscription trips will be allowed and must be scheduled with the Department of Public Works.

• Cancellations MUST be made a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the originally scheduled trip. If a trip is missed or canceled less than 30 minutes prior to arrival, this is considered a no-show, and the rider will be billed $10.00 for each incident. Three (3) or
