The use of vaping devices and e-cigarettes are a real danger, and many states throughout the country are taking steps to address this growing issue. We can’t stress enough, students need to avoid these products.

In August the Illinois Department of Public Health announced it was investigating a growing number of serious respiratory and lung illnesses among teenagers who use vaping devices.

Fenton High School is committed to delivering high-quality educational programming, but we also want our students and community to be healthy. We are vigilantly monitoring our campus and addressing issues of underage smoking when they arise. Teachers and staff are more closely watching for signs of smoking and devices that could be used for smoking.

We encourage parents to do the same. These devices come in many shapes and sizes. They often look like pens or USB thumb drives, and the smoke does not smell like traditional cigarette smoke.

There are many misconceptions about vaping and e-cigarettes.

While some products do not have tobacco, the Illinois Department of Public Health reports that most have liquid nicotine and other harmful particles.

In September, Michigan became the first state to ban flavoring for e-cigarette and vaping devices. Michigan officials said vaping has become a public health emergency, and the flavors were a leading factor in children becoming addicted to nicotine.

Earlier this year Illinois raised the age for buying traditional cigarettes to 21 years old, and in the same measure added e-cigarettes and vaping devices into the regulation. Students should not be in possession of these items and we strongly urge students to avoid the health risks associated with underage smoking.

We hope parents will join the Fenton staff and legislators throughout the country in working toward keeping kids away from these dangerous products. Please have a talk with your children and keep a watchful eye, just as we are here at Fenton.

STRIVING FOR EQUITY AT FENTON Everyone wins when we have an equitable system. Thirty staff members participated in Phase 1 of our district’s equity audit in September with the DuPage Regional Office of Education’s executive director of equity and professional learning. These individuals make up the District Equity Leadership Team (DELT).

The overarching goal of an equity audit at Fenton is to advance equitable outcomes for all students. The steps/purpose of anequity audit includes fact-finding process, identifying gaps, providing a systemic equity lens to areas of improvements, and offering recommendations to address inequities.

FENTON STUDENT EARNS NATIONAL SCHOLARS COMMENDATION Virginia Salazar was named a Commended Student in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program for her score on the Preliminary SAT last year.

All juniors throughout Illinois take the test each year, just like other select states. Virginia was recently given her Letter of Commendation, which says her score ranked in the top 50,000 of all 1.5 million scores. That means Virginia’s score was among the top 3% in the whole United States.

Counselor Paul Welsh said Virginia’s success is not limited to only her PSAT test score.

“Virginia’s academic record speaks for itself,” Welsh said.

“She ranks fourth in a class of 351 while challenging herself with the most rigorous courses we offer. The only time she ever earned less than an A was first semester of her ninth grade year. Since that time, she has earned straight A’s.”

RAY BUNKER WRESTLES IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Ray Bunker, a 2012 Fenton graduate, represented the United States by wrestling at the Sept. 15 World Championships in Kazakhstan.

“Ray competed well and did a tremendous job representing Fenton at the World Championships in Kazakhstan,” said Brian Hastings, a social studies teacher and wresting coach. “Ray defeated an opponent from India to make it to the quarterfinals and led the No. 1 seeded wrestler from Bulgaria for most of the match before ultimately losing. He finished the tournament ranked 12th in the world.”

Bunker advanced to the World Championships after a June 2 victory at the Final X tournament in Lincoln, NE. and after having won the U.S. Open a few months earlier in Las Vegas, NV. Fenton is where Bunker got his start as a freshman. By his senior year, Bunker placed third in state at the IHSA tournament. Now, Bunker proudly wrestles for the U.S. Marine Corps, where he is a sergeant.

“Representing the United States on a World or Olympic team is the pinnacle of wrestling and it is an absolutely phenomenal accomplishment,” Coach Hastings said. “Ray Bunker has constantly improved through hard work, having extreme confidence in his ability, and being in perfect training situations.”

Coach Hastings said Bunker is very supportive of the Fenton wrestling program and routinely visits with Bison wrestlers to teach techniques and give advice.

Congratulations, Ray Bunker! Fenton High School is proud of you and grateful for all that you do.

A team of about 45 people from Bensenville School District 2, Wood Dale School District 7 and Fenton Community High School District 100 are working collaboratively to develop a Portrait of a Graduate. A Portrait of a Graduate is a community-developed picture of the hopes and dreams it has for students. It identifies what graduates will know, the competencies and skills they will develop, and the beliefs and values that will lead to success in learning, work, and life. The team of students, educators and community members expect to have a finished document by late November.

The yearbook is a great gift for birthdays, the holidays, and graduation.

The Highlights staff works tirelessly to compile student and faculty portraits, and chronicle the happenings of all teams and clubs. This book of memories serves to celebrate each year of high school and immortalize all the people who walk the halls of Fenton High School.

SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHERS DRESS UP FOR CONSTITUTION DAY Fenton’s social studies teachers and librarians dressed up for Constitution Day and encouraged students to ask questions about who they represent and how the Constitution was written, amended, and enforced.

FOOD FOR FAMILIES PICK UP A SUCCESS

Every Sept. 17 is celebrated as Constitution Day because it was Sept. 17, 1787 when the United States Constitution was formally signed and adopted.

Social Studies teachers at Fenton focus on issues and topics surrounding the Constitution almost every day in class; from the framing of the American Constitution, to comparing it to the constitutions of other countries, to how the Constitution is applied to events taking place in the world today.

Students in AP Government suggested that teachers in the social studies department dress as Founding Fathers and Suffragettes (women who fought for the right to vote) on Constitution Day in order to bring closer focus to the importance of the day and the document.

Student volunteers were exceptional during the Sept. 17 Food For Families pick up. It was Fenton’s first pick up of the school year, and 18 students stayed after school to help their community. Students unpacked and distributed fresh produce, meats, baked goods, juice, and canned goods to local families in need. The monthly event is coordinated in partnership with Bensenville School District 2, Wood Dale School District 7, the Bensenville/Wood Dale Food Pantry, and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

“The department jumped at the chance and has been thrilled with the reaction of both their students and their colleagues!” said Kate Ward, Division Leader of English, Social Studies, and ELL. “Students are participating in many fun and engaging activities based on the Constitution in their Social Studies classes throughout the day.”

Some of those activities included a Readers Theater of the Constitution, blackout poetry writing, and a mock Constitutional Convention.

CHINESE EDUCATORS VISIT, OBSERVE FENTON Fenton High School played host to 19 educators from China during a Tuesday tour and luncheon.

The Chinese delegation observed a range of classes including algebra, chemistry, French, automotive, woodworking and AP computer science, among others. They were later treated to Chicago style hotdogs.

District 100 Superintendent James Ongtengco welcomed the group when they first assembled in the school’s Academic Resource Center.

“Public education is the key to opening doors of opportunity,” Ongtengco told the delegation.

“It’s the best example of democracy and rights.”

Mr. Ongtengco and Principal Jovan Lazarevic were among the administrators who led small groups through a cycle of classrooms.

Vocational classes were among the popular destinations. Several groups spent considerable time watching Fenton students building computers and repairing cars in the respective lab classes.

CP RAIL HOLIDAY TRAIN | Monday | December 2 The Canadian Pacific Railroad Holiday Train is coming back to Bensenville! This event serves as a way to raise awareness of local hunger issues in the United States and Canada. The event features free live musical entertainment, giveaways, refreshments, and a check presentation to our local food pantry. Festivities will begin at the corner of S. York Road and Railroad Avenue on Monday, December 2nd at 3:00PM. A check presentation and musical performance will begin promptly at 3:30PM. VILLAGE OF BENSENVILLE TOY DRIVE 2019 Residential Landscaping Contest Winners Throughout the summer, Village staff and residents nominated a total of 14 homes to be recognized as part of our 2019 Residential Landscaping Contest. This initiative is in partnership with the Garden Club of Bensenville who served as the official judges for the contest.

Help Keep Snow off the Streets Permission for overnight parking on Village streets will not be granted after a snowfall of two inches (2”) or more. In order to ensure effective plowing and salting operations it is imperative vehicles are not parked on Village streets or in alleys. Alley parking is prohibited at any time.

Please do not park or keep a vehicle on public streets after a (2”) or more snowfall for twenty four (24) hours, or until the streets have been cleared of snow. Vehicles in violation will be ticketed and towed. Snow plowing or dumping snow from sidewalks and driveways onto the public streets or public alleyways is prohibited.

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Bensenville School District 2 its School Climate Transformation Grant in the amount of $750,000 a year for five years, for a total of $3.75 million.

The School Climate Transformation Grant will provide funding for District 2 to develop, enhance, and expand the evidence-based, multi-tiered behavioral frameworks its schools use to improve behavioral outcomes and learning conditions for all students.

This is the third prestigious grant District 2 has earned in the past year and a half, bringing an additional $9.25 million into Bensenville schools.

In June 2018, the Illinois State Board of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants program awarded District 2 and Fenton High School $3 million to fund critical community schools initiatives for five years.

Then, in September 2018, District 2 was one of just 15 school districts in the country selected to receive the U.S. Department of Education Full Service Community Schools Grant. The Full Service grant provides $2.5 million over five years to support high-quality early childhood education programs; high quality school and out-of-school time programming; support for a children’s transitions into elementary, middle, and high school, and on to post-secondary education and the workplace; family and community engagement supports for at-home student learning; and social, health, nutrition, and mental health services and supports.

BLINDING THEM WITH SCIENCE Blackhawk students enjoy after-school STEM programming on early release Tuesdays.

Rotary to provide winter clothing for families in need.

This fall, the Full Service Community Schools Program in District 2 is partnering with the Center for the Gifted and the Bensenville Community Public Library to provide after-school STEM programming for middle school students on early release Tuesdays.

The STEM activities are available on a first-come-first-served basis to the first 60 BMS students in attendance, and each week features a different experiment or build, such as chemistry experiments, simple machine projects, and candy science.

The activities are held from 2-3 p.m. in the Meeting Room at Bensenville Community Public Library, 200 S. Church Road in Bensenville. District 2 provides participating students with a snack following each week’s activity.

DRUMMING UP CHARACTER DuPage Foundation grant brings Dancing Drum interactive workshop-to performance percussion program to BSD2 elementary schools.

During the workshop portion of the Dancing Drum program, students learned a unique ensemble piece, which included exciting rhythms, drum breaks, and even solos. By the end of the workshop, each student group was ready to showcase its ensemble piece at the final “Drumming Up Character” performance.

The Dancing Drum program was made possible by a $10,000 DuPage Foundation Young People’s Music Initiative Grant funded through the JCS Arts, Health and Education Fund.

New parent mentors, community center help District 2 build community.

‘Resilience’ will be the first discussion topic in the new BSD2 Community Dinner Series.

Federal grant dollars from the Full Service Community Schools Program are bringing parent mentors and a new community center to District 2.

The new BSD2 Community Center opened in midOctober in the community room (Room 155) at Tioga School and will operate 20 hours a week. The District’s partners in the Full Service Community Schools Program will use the Community Center to share resources and information about the services they can provide BSD2 families.

The District’s new parent mentors will also use the Community Center to assist families with navigating the school system by connecting them with important school and District programs, student activities and parent educational workshops.

COATS FOR FAMILIES

Celebrate our community with a dinner and discussion hosted by Bensenville School District 2 and the Bensenville-Wood Dale Food Pantry from 5:30-7:30 pm on Thursday, November 7, at Blackhawk Middle School.

Attendees will be treated to a free pasta dinner, followed by a viewing of lifelong educator Rita Pierson’s inspiring TED Talk, Every Kid Needs a Champion. Diners will then engage in a lively dinner table discussion on the topic of Resilience.

Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary will distribute new and gently used winter clothing to families in need during its 18th annual Coats for Families event, which will be held Saturday, December 7, from 9-11 am at W.A. Johnson School, located at 252 Ridgewood Avenue in Bensenville.

Coats will be distributed on a firstcome, first-served basis. Children must be present to receive a coat, and adult coats will be available on a limited basis. Families are encouraged to exchange children’s coats that are still in good condition but no longer fit.

Rotary’s Coats for Families event is held in conjunction with the Village of Bensenville’s 48th Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Residents can support these efforts by donating new and unwrapped toys, new or gently used coats, and new hats, scarves and non-perishable food items at donation boxes located throughout the community.

Monetary donations to Rotary’s Coats for Families event can also be made by visiting operationwarm.org/BensenvilleRotary. Every $20 donation buys a new winter coat for a child in need.

Keep the Wreath Red As the holiday season begins, you will notice a large holiday wreath on the front of the Bensenville Fire Protection District stations. Each of the wreaths will be decorated with large red bulbs that will be illuminated during the holiday season. Should a fire occur during the holiday season that is determined to have been directly caused by a holiday decoration, a white bulb will replace the red bulb.

The idea is for the residents of the Bensenville Fire Protection District to be exceptionally safety conscious during the holiday season.

HOLIDAY DECORATING KKK Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant.

KKK Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn.

KKK Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.

KKK Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of LED strands to connect.

KKK Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.

The Bensenville / Wood Dale Food Pantry has been providing food assistance to the residents of Bensenville, Wood Dale and North Elmhurst since 1972. The pantry is funded entirely by monetary and food donations as well as grant assistance and run exclusively by volunteers.
