The Bensenville Library is proud to welcome Cristina Henríquez for our tenth annual Bensenville Reads program. Each year, the Library selects a book to promote reading in the community, and invites the author to a Bensenville Reads celebration. This year you are invited to read The Book of Unknown Americans and join the Bensenville Library for an evening with Cristina Henríquez on Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 pm. Come meet Noodles the Wonder Dog at the Library! Noodles will wow you and win a place in your heart as he shows off all of his amazing tricks! A little about Noodles: he is a mixed breed dog, adopted from the Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago in 2009. Noodles won ABC’s Good Morning America Dog vs. Dog competition and appeared live on the show, as well as Windy City Live, a Purina commercial, and also appeared on-stage in dozens of productions.

Prepare your child for Kindergarten 2016 by enrolling him or her in Kindergarten Boot Camp (KBC). Miss Kyrie and the Youth Services staff will help your preschooler transition into Kindergarten through this program designed to practice and strengthen key skills through collaborative, hands-on learning. KBC will focus on core competencies such as shapes, colors, counting, and the alphabet. Elements of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) will also be included in the KBC curriculum. Registration is required to attend KBC. NEW POLICE STATION OPENED QUICK FACTS • This 47,000 square foot state of the art facility is an adaptive reuse of a blighted industrial building that was vacant since 1998.

• This project has been delivered on time and under budget. The total project budget was $15,835,000 and the total project cost came in at $15,741,429.

• Over $1 million dollars of construction contracts went to Bensenville businesses.

• As a result of being a green community and building the police station to LEED Gold standards, we will receive a 70% federal rebate on all interest paid for these bonds. Savings are estimated to be at a minimum $550,000 and can grow to $1,500,000 by the time the bonds are paid out.

• By delaying a year for the second tract of bonds we achieved savings of $1.25 Million due to the issued bonds being bank qualified. (Bank Qualified is a designation meaning the purchasing bank gets to deduct certain expenses involved with the issuance of the bonds and thus offer a reduced interest rate.)

• The Village was awarded $117,788 in grants to reimburse energy efficiency upgrades through DCEO’s Illinois Energy Now program.

• Illinois Clean Energy has awarded $25,000 for the LEED Gold Certification process already underway.

• New headquarters is ADA compliant, allows reports to be taken in private, provides for a safer environment for officers, prisoners and the general public, facilitates modern and professional police investigations, operations and training, and includes a large multi-purpose room that allows for more interaction with the public at meetings and that also serves as a fully equipped emergency operations center.

New Bensenville Citizen Patrol Making a Difference On June 20, 2015 Bensenville Patrol units responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash involving a motorcycle. The offending vehicle was described by dispatch as a blue pick-up truck. Citizen Patrol Officers Angel Ramirez and Ramona Westfall were on duty at the time and were monitoring the radio traffic. Ramirez and Westfall noticed a blue pick-up truck travelling east bound on Green Street from York Road. They followed the pick-up truck at a safe distance and were able to relay the license plate information to Bensenville dispatch via their assigned telephone. Bensenville/Franklin Park Patrol units were informed and responded. Ramirez and Westfall continued to follow the suspect vehicle into Franklin Park while in constant telephone contact and relaying information to Bensenville dispatch. When the suspect vehicle was delayed by a freight train, Bensenville/Franklin Park Patrol units caught up to the vehicle.

Because of new Bensenville Citizen Patrol Officer Ramirez and Westfall’s observation skills, understanding of their duties, and volunteer service the offender of this accident was apprehended. BACK YARD HEN PROGRAM The Village of Bensenville continues to find new ways to build a green community and help foster healthy lifestyles.

We are proud to have launched a backyard hen program and seeing residents participating.

BRUSH PICK-UP Residents are invited to put these items out for removal on the Sunday prior to the week of pick-up, but no later than 7:00 am on the first Monday of each month.

From May through November Allied Waste will remove individual branches that are less than three feet in length and one inch in diameter on your regular trash collection day from your regular collection point in biodegradable paper bags or garbage cans with two Yard Waste Only labels attached.

Allied Waste collects these branches with other residential yard waste.

Bundled brush and branches will not be collected.

For 2015, brush pick-up weeks start on the following days: September 7 | October 5 | November 2

Overview of Backyard Hen Program • A license for the property must be issued to raise hens.

• Only residents of single family homes are eligible for a coop license.

• Up to 4 hens allowed; however, no roosters allowed.

• Coops and runs may be located in the rear yard and must be at least 10 feet from all property lines.

• The coop must have a minimum of four square feet per hen. The run must be attached to the coop and be covered on all sides, including the top. Hens must not be allowed to exit an enclosed space.

NOISE RELIEF FROM TRAINS The Quiet Zone has begun in Bensenville. What does it mean? The trains will not use their horn when they are approaching the crossings at York, Center, Addison, and Church Roads. This also means pedestrians must be aware before crossing and remove headphones to listen for the train. The following are suggestions: 1. Obey all signals at these crossings, while driving or walking.

2. Remain behind the safety gate arms.

3. Do not attempt to cross as the safety gate arms lower or while bells or lights are activated.

4. Cross only on public designated crossings.

5. Turn off your cell phone or MP3 players when near the tracks. Texting or other distractions can be deadly.

6. Do not rely on the scheduled arrivals of trains thinking you can still cross and beat the train.

7. Always EXPECT a train before crossing even when signals indicate otherwise.

According to our most recent Residential Community Survey (2014) the most important Village goal is to be financially sound. We wanted to give some general insights on were the village stands as of now in comparison to a few years ago.

The chart shows a comparison of the Villages Finances in 2014 versus 2009. The chart shows Village Wide Unrestricted Net Assets as well as a breakout of the Village’s two largest funds.

The key indicator in the chart is the increase in Fund Balance percentage in the General fund from a negative 26% to a positive 43%. This financial indicator is used by the major credit rating agencies (S&P / Moody’s) spot check a Village’s financial health.

SENIOR CITIZEN CLUB LUNCHEONS Bensenville residents aged 55 and over are invited to enjoy a meal and play some bingo the first Tuesday of the month at Monty’s Banquet Hall located at 703 South York Road.

New Community Job Board & Real Estate Locator The new community job board will be a great resource for both residents and businesses. It allows Bensenville businesses who are looking to hire employees to post those job opportunities free of charge and is also another outlet for residents seeking employment close to home to find a job.

The real estate locator feature on our website allows users to post both residential and commercial properties online.

This tool will help market properties available in Bensenville and help to attract new residents and business into town.

HOLIDAY TREE DONATION It is never too early to start planning for the holidays. We are planning a great holiday season for Bensenville children of all ages. You can be a big part of these festivities by donating a tree to be used in Downtown Bensenville. On Wednesday, July 1, Fenton welcomed James Ongtengco as their new principal. Mr. Ongtengco comes to Fenton from Mundelein High School where he served as assistant principal. While July 1 marked his official start date, James was already a familiar face at Fenton as he made it a priority to meet with staff, department chairpersons, administrators and Board of Education members since he was hired last spring.

“I’m excited and honored to be the new principal of Fenton High School,” said Mr. Ongtengco. “I’m looking forward to leading Fenton in these exciting times that includes but not limited to access and equity, renovation, 1:1(1 computer per every student), Be REAL, Bison Time and literacy across the curriculum.”

2015 – 2016 School Year Begins with Ongoing Construction*

The District 100 Board of Education will hold its regular business meetings on Monday, Sept 28 and Monday, Oct 26. District 100 meetings are held at 7 pm in the board room at Fenton Community High School. Parents and community members are invited to attend.

Fenton High School staff, administrators and school board members, in partnership with architectural firm, Wight & Company and construction company, IHC, look forward to welcoming students back on August 31 and the start of the 2015 – 2016 school year.

When students arrive on August 31, they will find a new student service center complete with a College and Career Center, remodeled Media Center, up-to-date sprinkler system throughout the building and remodeled and reconfigured classroom spaces. In addition, every student will have a new assigned locker and all classrooms will be renumbered with new signage displayed.

FENTON CREST RECEIVES AN UPDATE The Fenton Community High School District 100 Board of Education in partnership with school administration is proud to unveil an updated version of the Fenton crest.

The Fenton Branding Committee, comprised of school board members and school administration, worked diligently to capture the tradition of the crest while modernizing the graphic. With the facility construction project in progress, it became evident that the files currently used to reproduce the graphic would need to be updated to match current printing trends.

The Board was strongly in favor of keeping current school colors and the Bison mascot to maintain the strong tradition of Fenton High School.

The updated Fenton crest has updated icons within the four chambers, a letter F and a ribbon distinguishing 1917 as the year Bensenville first began providing a high school program. The crest’s four chambers mirror the mission, beliefs and vision of Fenton High School. See descriptions below.

Senior Citizen Gold Card Program The Fenton Senior Citizen Gold Card program provides individuals, 65 years or older living within the District 100 boundaries, a Gold Card for free access to most Fenton High School athletic events, music performances and drama productions.

THE FENTON DRAMA DEPARTMENT PRESENTS, UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE OCTOBER 22-24 The Fenton Drama Department is proud to present, Up the Down Staircase on October 22, 23 and 24 at 7:00 pm in the Lewis-Huffman Auditorium at Fenton. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.

Taken from the popular novel by Bel Kaufman, Up the Down Staircase is the story of Sylvia Barrett, a first year English teacher at an inner city school with hopes of inspiring students to become writers and peeking their interest in classical literature.

However, she quickly learns that this noble pursuit will have a number of obstacles from students and administration alike. Written in 1964, Up the Down Staircase spent 64 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list and sold over 6 million copies. As a play, it is one of the most produced high school plays of all time, providing students with a number of memorable roles and audiences with as many laughs. Mark your calendars for Fenton’s production which promises to be a wonderful evening of entertainment.

Senior Citizens Invited to a Free Matinee Performance of Up the Down Staircase An exclusive matinee of Up the Down Staircase will be performed for Bensenville and Wood Dale senior citizens on Saturday, October 24 at 1 pm. FALL ROSTER OFFERS FRESH PROGRAMMING The Park District is excited to announce that registration for Fall classes and programs is underway. Staff has been working to develop new and exciting recreational opportunities for the Bensenville Park District residents.

You will see several new programs and events for teens including dances and ice skating nights. Pre-teens and teens will also be able to receive babysitting training and certification that will prepare them for their first job and be more prepared as they take on this challenge.

You will also find the newly developed School of Dance and Movement where ballet and tap classes are taught by seasoned professionals educated and trained in theatre, dance, and the arts. This program will allow children the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop through a variety of dance classes and ability levels. Tumbling and cheerleading classes will also be offered.

The BPD Club, the District’s before and after school program, will now include children in grades 6 through 8 at Blackhawk Middle School.

In addition to the traditional activities and working on homework, these children will experience some new back to nature opportunities by working in our new garden beds, learning the benefits of nature and the world around us, and enjoying more of the outdoors. The children will also assist in the Park District’s efforts to restore and beautify the public parks and native open spaces as part of a District-wide ecological restoration plan.

Our Adult Group Fitness Class Program has added five new classes to their Fall Calendar, perfect for those looking for variety in their fitness regimen. The District is now able to boast that it offers over 25 fitness classes a week. We are trying to offer a variety of classes and schedule them at different times of the week in hopes to fit most schedules.

The Park District is striving to provide new, fun, unique, and educational experiences for all ages. NEW DANCE, TUMBLING & GYMNASTICS PROGRAM The Bensenville Park District introduces its newly redesigned Dance, Tumbling and Gymnastics’ Program for ages 2 to 15! All classes are offered at the Deer Grove Leisure Center in the dedicated Dance Studio Room which features a spacious wood floor, full mirrors and mounted bars. Our talented instructors design the programs toward skill development, socialization and a group dance experience where every dancer excels. Dancers experience quality skill instruction in a fun, supportive, non- competitive environment that offers an annual dance recital. There are 10 different classes to choose from, with a variety of the classes offering instruction based on multiple age groups. TINY TOT PRESCHOOL Tiny Tot Preschool is a well-rounded program designed for 3-5 year old children to help build their self confidence in a fun and nurturing environment. Children enjoy stories, energizing music, age-appropriate art projects, and activities that will expose your child to important concepts including numbers, letters, shapes and colors. Tiny Tot Preschool will encourage social, intellectual and ethical growth of your child through joyful discovery and thoughtful play. The school year is through May 27, 2016. Community members helped develop a new Strategic Plan for District 2 at four meetings in April and May. Parents and community leaders from other governmental bodies worked in small teams with the Board of Education and District 2 staff. They reviewed the District’s strengths and looked for ways to improve. The new plan’s goals include increasing afterschool club opportunities, revising grading standards, and improving communication to parents. The Board adopted the team’s recommendations in June, including the Mission Statement and six fundamental Belief Statements, below. The District is placing special emphasis on the second belief statement, about community partnerships.

BLACKHAWK MIDDLE SCHOOL PHASE II RENOVATIONS ARE COMPLETE Newly-renovated areas greeted students on the first day of classes at Blackhawk Middle School on August 24. The auditorium has new seats, a new sound system, new stage curtains and is freshly-carpeted. A new learning center has been constructed on the north end where rooms 160 – 162 used to be. It’s triple the size of the old learning center, with space to build things, to record video presentations, to hold meetings, and of course to use the library collection. New classrooms have replaced the old learning center.

VOLUNTEER WITH PROJECT CARE PLUS The Project CARE Plus program (Citizens Active in Reading Education Plus other subject areas) is gearing up for the new school year! Project CARE Plus is an academic mentoring program that is embarking on its 20th year and as always we are in need of volunteers. If you love working with children and you are able to give 1 hour a week to help in areas of Reading or Math this program is for you! Project CARE will be hosting a brief, but informative training session on Thursday, September 3rd starting at 10:00am at the Lifelong Learning Center. The program officially begins on Monday, September 14.
