In Person Outdoor Classes CYCLING | Are you ready to get back on your bike? Want to get into shape for our Virtual Bike N’ Run Marathon? Great news, we are moving our new stationary Matrix Cycling bikes outside for the summer! Advanced registration required for each class, current fitness memberships will not be accepted at this time. All registrations will be taken on a first come first serve basis, we cannot wait to see you out there!

CHAIR YOGA | Learn simple movements to regain, develop, and maintain good posture. Good alignment will help you to see the most benefit from exercise and enhance the feeling of well-being during everyday movements. BVILLE BIKE N’ RUN VIRTUAL MARATHON | Bville Bike N’ Run Virtual Marathon is a competitive race to be done virtually. Each participant will be given 2 weeks to bike 13.1 miles & run the other 13.1 miles.

Total mileage does not need to be done in one go! You may combine multiple days to complete your run/bike.

All results must be saved and submitted to tlinder@bvilleparks.org and your run/bike results and times need to be tracked through the MapMyRun App. Each participant will receive a Race Tech shirt and medal.

DRIVE-IN MOVIE | FRIDAY 08/07 AND SATURDAY 08/08 Experience an old-time drive in movie this summer! We’ll be showing Lion King out at White Pines, so pack some snacks and watch from the comfort of your car. Prices are $25 per car.

PAINT AND SIP NIGHTS LIVE | Paint and Sip done like never before. We are bringing this to you in the comfort of your own home. Tune in, pop some bubbly, and paint with only our very best. You will learn techniques to create your own beautiful masterpieces that you will be proud to show off. Who said you couldn’t have a fun filled Friday night from the comfort of your own personal studio! You can pick up your supplies, we’ve got you covered (Alcohol not provided in art kit). Classes are Friday nights at 6pm from 7/108/21. Fee is $35|$45 with Kit or $15 without Kit per class.

LITTLE DISCOVERERS | This weekly adventure every Wednesday from 10:30-11:15 is filled with perfect preschool learning experiences! Each class is filled with activities and stories that help develop a child’s mind and body. Children are guaranteed to have a good time with Mrs. B! Class activity kits will be available for pick up at the Deer Grove Leisure Center. Sign up for all six and receive a $5 discount. These classes are virtual on Zoom.

EXOTIC ANIMAL HOUR | Join us over Zoom for an exotic animal hour that will be up close and personal with a variety of different animals. The professionals at Crosstown Exotics are excited to introduce you to their scaly friends and answer any questions you may have about the animals. This will take place both 6/20 and 7/18 from 2-3pm.

BENSENVILLE’S SUMMER EVENTS INCLUDING MUSIC IN THE PARK AND LIBERTYFEST CANCELLED IN COOPERATION WITH STATE’S 5-PHASE PLAN With the announcement of Governor Pritzker’s Restore Illinois plan to reopen the state, the Village of Bensenville’s Music in the Park summer concert series and the Fourth of July LibertyFest celebrations have been cancelled. These events traditionally bring large crowds to Bensenville and would violate Governor Pritzker’s Restore Illinois plan until the economy is fully reopened.

“This was not an easy decision and one that the Village struggled with knowing how popular they are but we also have to follow the direction from the state and put public safety first. Bensenville remains committed to following all state guidelines, working together to combat COVID-19 and keeping our residents safe and healthy,” said Village Manager Evan Summers.

2019-2020 VEHICLE STICKER PURCHASES CANCELED In a continued effort to provide relief to Bensenville residents, Village President Frank DeSimone signed an Executive Order extending new and current vehicle stickers and dog licenses purchase deadline from June 30, 2020 to December 31, 2020. The Village expects to begin selling vehicle stickers and dog license renewals at the beginning of 2021.

It is the Village’s hope that by suspending this program, residents will save $32 for every car they own. The Village recognizes that COVID-19 has taken a significant financial toll on many of our residents and businesses, and we hope that by doing this it will help to reduce that burden. CONTACTLESS SHREDDING EVENT SATURDAY, AUGUST 1ST Landscape Waste Disposal and Open Burning Rules in Dupage County In 1990, the DuPage County Board passed Ordinance OWR-001-90 banning the illegal disposal of landscape waste.

Participants may bring up to 2 banker boxes of paper for shredding, NO binders. Please stay in the vehicle. Documents must be placed in your trunk and will be contactless. All shredding occurs on-site. Please remove binders, rubber bands, plastic page protectors, plastic bags, plastic file tabs, CDs and other hard items. Staples, Paper Clips, and fasteners do not need to be removed.

To maintain acceptable ambient air quality and to protect the health, welfare and safety of DuPage County’s residents. The open burning of landscape wastes produces particulate matter that may exceed the National Ambient Air Quality survey standard.

Village President Frank DeSimone has challenged the community to thank our essential workers by launching a challenge he created to recognize their hard work. He is calling this the #EssentialChallenge. This challenge invites the community and local officials to conduct a gesture or act of kindness to essential workers. President DeSimone has challenged River Grove Village President David Guerin, Bloomingdale Village President Franco Coladipietro, Schiller Park Village President Nick Caiafa, and DuPage County Board Member Don Puchalski.

WHAT DOES DUPAGE COUNTY’S ORDINANCE SAY? It shall be unlawful for any person to cause or allow any open and uncontrolled burning of landscape wastes at any site in unincorporated DuPage County. It shall be unlawful for any person to cause or allow the burning of any refuse including landscape waste in any chamber not specifically designed for the purpose and approved by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency pursuant to regulations adopted by the Illinois Pollution Control Board or specified by this Ordinance. The Village will host a shredding event on Saturday, August 1st from 10 am – noon in the Public Works Facility parking lot located at 717 E Jefferson St, Bensenville, IL 60106.

In May, he also recognized Bensenville’s essential workers by delivering lunch to the Bensenville Police Department, Fire District, Public Works Department, Village Hall, and the Bensenville Post Office. Pizza lunches were provided by Mamma Maria’s. The Village thanks all essential workers in the community for their continued hard work and dedication.

BENSENVILLE STRONG SIGNS As COVID-19 continues to impact communities, many Bensenville residents and businesses continue to stay strong throughout the crisis. One Bensenville business, Precise Digital Printing, donated 250 yard signs that say “Bensenville Strong” to the Village helping to spread positivity in the community. Yard signs were delivered by Village President Frank DeSimone and members of the Village Board to residents who requested one.

“We have seen so many inspiring stories about the community coming together and I encourage you to continue sharing them. Each week we feature new photos on our Facebook page using the hashtag “Bensenville Strong.” I hope that these photos continue to spread happiness and positivity as we all continue this fight,” said Village President Frank DeSimone.

MINI BIRTHDAY PARADES If you heard or saw a long line of emergency vehicles driving through town the last few months, you probably witnessed one of the Village’s mini birthday parades. These parades were conducted to provide an alternative way to celebrate a child’s birthday during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those who participated in the parade included the Bensenville Police Department, Public Works, Emergency Management Agency, Park District, Fire Protection District, Bensenville Community Public Library, and Village Board Members. Village President Frank DeSimone also joined in by tossing out custom made t-shirts to the children celebrating a birthday.

B-RECOGNIZED FOR YOUR RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPING! Once again, the Village of Bensenville is partnering with the Garden Club of Bensenville to recognize great looking residential properties in the community.

Village staff and residents will be monitoring homes to recognize the best kept yards in Bensenville and the Garden Club of Bensenville will serve as our official judges. CENSUS – DEADLINE EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 31ST Respond to the 2020 Census today! Households should have already received invitations to respond to the 2020 Census in the mail. It’s important we get a complete and accurate count of our community. Responses determine the amount of federal funding allocated to the Village over the next 10 years that can be used towards health care, roads, public safety, our schools and library, and so much more. October 31, 2020 is the last day for households to self-respond online, by phone, or by mail. Visit my2020census.gov or call 844.330.2020 to fill out the questionnaire. Be counted!

Be aware that census takers will start visiting households that haven’t responded beginning August 11 and continuing until October 31, 2020. Due to the impacts of COVID-19, this is a different time period than what was previously advertised. A census taker can be identified by their official Census Bureau ID badge, bag or laptop, and letter. They will never ask to enter your home and will only ask questions that appear on the official census form.

FREE MULCH AVAILABLE TO BENSENVILLE RESIDENTS Started in the spring of 2018, the Village offers free mulch to its residents. Mulch can be picked up at the Public Works Facility in the North East corner of the parking lot. The bin is unsupervised and residents must provide their own transportation and tools needed for pickup. The mulch is the result of all the in-town brush pickups, tree trimmings and tree removals done by our forestry crews. This program is Bensenville’s environmental initiative to recycle our material and reinvest it back into the neighborhoods.

The Bensenville Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is always looking for additional volunteers for their program which consists of people from Bensenville and the surrounding communities. EMA volunteers often assist with traffic control for special events like Music in the Park or LibertyFest as well as major weather events, or emergency situations. The Bensenville EMA work closely with other departments like the Public Works Department, Police Department, and Fire District to assist as needed. Volunteers will have the opportunity to receive training in CPR, AED, first aid, and search and rescue. No certifications are required to begin volunteering. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact EMA Coordinator Don Schultz at: 630.350.3461 or dschultz@bensenville.il.us. Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older to qualify.

• Get rid of old tires, tin cans, buckets, drums, bottles or any water holding containers.

• Fill in or drain any low places (puddles, ruts) in yard.

• Clean gutters periodically.

• Keep drains, ditches and culverts clean of weeds and trash so water will drain properly.

• Empty plastic wading pools at least once a week and store them indoors when not in use.

• Make sure your backyard pool is properly cared for while on vacation.

• Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water with sand or concrete.

Local History – Live!

Take & Make Adult Crafts

Just because we can’t all be together right now, doesn’t mean we can’t keep having our crafting programs! Adults are invited to join us live on Zoom for DIY crafts! We’ll supply the crafting materials for free — we’ll have them bagged up ready to go and you can pick them up! Registration for Take & Make programs is required through our online calendar or by phone; space is limited. The last few months have been complicated and unsettling for everyone.

For schools, like many other institutions, these are uncharted waters and unprecedented times. We sincerely thank all of the essential workers: healthcare workers, first responders, grocery staff, municipal leaders, and all other essential workers for their heroic daily acts. A special thank you to all of our students, parents, and staff for their support and flexibility. The struggle will continue but we will persevere together through empathy and collaboration.

Below are a few important topics that we at Fenton want to communicate: Congratulations to our Seniors, Class of 2020! The staff at Fenton High School is saddened that we could not have more time with the Class of 2020. We pride ourselves on building relationships with our students and their families. The Class of 2020 is full of champions, innovators, leaders, communicators, team builders, and hard workers. We are proud of them all! COVID-19 didn’t stop the Class of 2020 from succeeding, and I’m excited to see what else they overcome and achieve in the future. Congratulations, Class of 2020. We are all proud of you.

Food Distribution is our Priority. Fenton made a firm decision to feed its community during the COVID-19 global pandemic. A small but dedicated team prepared and distributed breakfasts and lunches between 10 a.m. and noon on most weekdays. We are making and distributing thousands of meals per week. I’m forever grateful to those who volunteered to assume this mission. Fenton remains committed to our food distribution program throughout the summer semester. Please visit the COVID-19 Announcements page on our website for the up-to-date schedule.

Safety is Paramount. Fenton has supported Illinois’ stay-at-home order, however, there are certain instances when we need to be in public. In late April, Applied Technology Teacher Mrs. Lauren Lemm designed and built 38 plastic face shields for Fenton’s essential workers to wear while interacting with the public. I applaud her for the painstaking mathematics involved with designing, 3D printing, and assembling the shields. This example of ingenuity is a small glimpse into the great work our teachers do with students on a daily basis, but in this case her efforts were more cost effective and quicker than looking for face shields on the open market. Fenton’s commitment to safety will continue. We have been planning ahead to that unknown time when students can return to the building, and we intend to keep our students, parents, and staff safe.

Learning will Continue. Learning never stopped. Fenton has consistently been ahead of the pack when it comes to planning, and we intend to keep it that way. We were among the few who had an E-Learning program approved by our school board and the DuPage County Regional Office of Education prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. Fenton staff have already started bolstering our Remote Learning curriculum and technology in anticipation of a Remote Learning start in the fall. We want to be prepared, ready, and hit the ground running in August.

I want to thank our community partners at the City of Wood Dale, Wood Dale School District 7, Wood Dale Park District, Police and Fire Departments, and Public Library for working collaboratively during these unprecedented times. Also, I want to thank all of the residents of Wood Dale for their support of our students, our parents, and our school programs. Your collective support makes Fenton a stronger and better school.

FCCLA | The Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) team competed in the children’s literature proficiency event at Regionals and received a 1st place ribbon, which qualified them to compete at the state level in April. That competition, however, was cancelled.

STUDENT CREATES PROSTHETIC ARM DURING REMOTE LEARNING

Nico Carillo, a graduating senior who was in Fenton’s Foundations of Scientific Research class, set out to build a prosthetic arm as his research project for the spring semester, and he made significant progress while at home doing Remote Learning.

In order to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, each qualifying senior demonstrated proficiency in English and another language on a state-approved language assessment. The Seal of Biliteracy is displayed on a student’s diploma and transcripts for future educational institutions and employers. The following students earned the Seal of Biliteracy:

On a video conference with his teacher, Ms. Stephanie Downen, Carillo demonstrated how a sensor connected to his upper forearm could detect his muscle movement and, in turn, cause the prosthetic fingers to move accordingly. He demonstrated moving individual fingers as well as making a fist.

“The course is new this year and students were able to choose their own topics,” Ms. Downen said.

“Nico has definitely exceeded my expectations. I’m extremely proud of him.”

Carillo has friends and family with diabetes. When he learned about the risk for amputation among people with diabetes, Carillo quickly took an interest in prosthetic limbs.

Ms. Downen approved of the project and guided Carillo through much of the research earlier in the term.

The Coronavirus shutdown in mid-March didn’t deter him, as Carillo continued to work on computer coding and 3D printing while at home.

Jason Gasior, a senior in AP Computer Science, worked with Carillo to develop the computer codes that connect sensors to levers. Gasior already took the class in the fall and completed a different project with Ms. Downen. He agreed to help Carillo as a friend.

Blackhawk Middle School’s eighth graders celebrated the completion of their District 2 careers in unique fashion this spring.

Due to COVID-19 safety measures, the school held a virtual promotion ceremony to recognize its 234 eighth graders.

BMS staff also paraded through town in their decorated cars, honking, waving signs, and shouting congratulations to students and their families gathered along the parade route.

The virtual promotion ceremony featured remarks from several local officials, and was highlighted by outstanding speeches delivered by three BMS eighth graders: Alexa Calderon, Nate Herrera, and Sarah Guerrero. SUMMER MEALS District 2 will continue to provide meals for students who need them over the summer.

When schools closed in mid-March due to the COVID-19 outbreak, BSD2 bus drivers and aides teamed with staff from Sodexo, the District’s food service provider, and ABM Industries, its facility services provider, to continue providing breakfast and lunch for students who needed it.

Over the course of the 10 weeks left in the school year, they distributed 101,000 meals to students who may have otherwise gone without.

And they weren’t done, as they’ve committed to continue the program over summer break.

Two days of food will be distributed every Monday, and three days of food every Wednesday.

The food will be distributed grab-and-go style to anyone 18 years and younger from 10:45 am – 1pm at 7 locations, most of them neighborhood bus stops. (Limit one per student.)

VIRTUAL VISITORS School closures and social distancing measures didn’t stop BSD2 teachers from conducting home visits.

Teachers participating in the Bensenville School District 2 Home Visit Program conducted more than 140 virtual home visits with their students’ families since schools closed and social distancing measures were enacted in mid-March.

HEALTHY START Complete your child’s health exam and immunization records

by August 14 Start the new school year right by submitting all the required health exams and immunizations to your child’s school by Friday, August 14.

Students will not be able to attend school after Friday, August 14, unless the required physical and updated immunizations are presented to the school.

The State of Illinois creates these requirements to protect everyone’s health. The submission deadline is August 14 instead of October 15 as in the past, so that everyone can be protected at the start of the year.

Many families encountered new parenting dilemmas as they juggled remote learning activities and work-fromhome responsibilities while sheltering in place. Others faced financial difficulties, housing issues, and medical and mental health concerns stemming from unemployment. And sadly, domestic abuse and neglect also increased during the COVID-19 shutdown.

During these visits, teachers don’t discuss academics. Instead, they aim to get to know their students better simply by meeting their families and experiencing their home lives.

These virtual home visits continued to provide opportunities for teachers to troubleshoot these issues with their students’ families, and connect them with vital resources that could help them cope with and overcome their struggles.

For instance, Jennifer Pierik, a fourth-grade teacher at Tioga School, suggests that student’s and their families select from a list of fun activities for their video chats.

Those activities include touring the students’ favorite part of their home, introducing a pet, showing off a special item in their home, sharing their best dance moves, playing 21 questions, reading a book or drawing a picture together, cooking a favorite family treat, or even going on a virtual roller coaster ride.

“Whether they’re actually sitting down in their students’ living rooms or paying them a virtual visit, these teachers really begin to learn who their students and their families are when they engage them in these casual, friendly conversations,” said Dr. James Stelter, District 2 Superintendent of Schools.
