Get Set for Summer Day Camp Bensenville Park District’s Day Camp Program invites children to have fun in the sun and at the pool. It offers a noncompetitive atmosphere where youngsters can socially interact and participate in a variety of activities.

Paint the Town Read is for everyone. When you sign-up to participate you set your own reading goal. Once you have achieved your goal you will receive a prize and be entered into the grand prize drawing. The more books you read past your goal, the more chances you’ll earn in the grand prize drawing! Paint the Town Read Kick-Off Saturday, May 19 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bensenville Theatre Join the Library and start off a great summer of Paint the Town Read at our kick-off event! We’ll have films, fun and lots of surprises. Registration for the program will take place at the Bensenville Theatre. Anyone who registers during our kick-off celebration will be eligible to win a family pool pass to the Bensenville Park District.

Library Reopens on Saturdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Library Board voted to reopen the Library on Saturdays, beginning April 14, 2012. The Library has been closed on Saturday since July 2010 as a result of budget cuts. The decision to close Saturday and Wednesday evening (hours reinstated August 2011) was made in conjunction with reductions in all areas of service: staffing, programs and materials, to maintain a balanced budget in light of reduced tax revenues. The reinstatement of Saturday hours comes after a complete review of programs and services and community response, and will result in cutbacks in other areas. Everyone is invited to shop on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission to Saturday’s sale is free.

Dance Force Crowned State Champions The Fenton Community High School Dance Force competed at the Illinois Drill Team Association (IDTA) state finals at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. The varsity dance team finished second in the Pom Dance category and first place in the AA Hip Hop category earning a state championship title.

Fenton’s junior varsity team competed at the IDTA JV state competition. The junior varsity Dance Force received a second place finish in the Pom Dance category. In addition, senior Vicki Witucki competed in the Miss IDTA solo contest and placed 12 out of 47 performers.

The state competitions were the culmination of the most successful season for the Fenton Dance Force. Other season highlights included junior April Ralph and freshman Haily Stillabower receiving Rising Star awards at the Rolling Meadows High School competition and senior Darlena Wocjek receiving the award at the Fenton competition. The Rising Star is awarded by the contest judges for exemplary performances.

National Honor Society Induction NHS Induction scheduled for May 10 The newest members of the Fenton High School chapter of the National Honor Society will be inducted on Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. During the ceremony, senior NHS members will have an opportunity to share their gratitude for the support received during their time at Fenton. NHS is open to all students who exhibit scholarship, leadership and service.

Relay for Life Scheduled for June 1-2

On Friday, June 1 through Saturday, June 2, Fenton Community High School will host the 7th annual Relay for Life of Bensenville Wood Dale. Since its inception in 2006, this event has raised over $300,000 for the American Cancer Society. Students, staff and community members raised over $40,000 last year.

Relay for Life events focus on three key goals: To Celebrate…Remember…

And Fight Back. During the evening, cancer survivors are celebrated, those who have lost their battle are remembered through a luminaria ceremony and activities are held throughout the night to fight back and raise money. 26th Annual Art Fest Thursday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The annual art festival showcases the artwork of Fenton students who were enrolled in art courses during the 2011-2012 school year. In addition, select students from Wood Dale Junior High and Blackhawk Middle School are also featured. Awards will be presented for the most outstanding work in a variety of categories.

Refreshments will be served.

Spring Choral Concert Monday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Please join us for a wonderful evening of music! Selections range from Fenton classics including “Good Bye Old Friend” to some popular pieces. The concert will showcase the talents of seniors.

The concert will be held in the Lewis-Huffman Auditorium at Fenton and refreshments will be served.

In April, Fenton hosted a Relay for Life student kick-off. The hour long event included performances by Fenton’s choir, Dance Force and student speakers. The goal was to provide information on how to get involved in the Bensenville Wood Dale Relay for Life.

At the conclusion of the event, the entire crowd participated in a cupcake toast to a life of more birthdays and less cancer.

Congratulations Class of 2011 Graduation is set for May 20

Preparations are underway to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2012. On Thursday, May 17, Fenton will host its annual Senior Awards Night to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the members of the senior class. The evening begins at 7:30 in the school’s auditorium and a reception will immediately follow the presentation. Students will be honored by staff and members of the community will present several scholarships. The event is open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend.

Commencement exercises for the Class of 2012 will take place on Sunday, May 20 at 12:00 p.m. in the Field House at Fenton Community High School.

Admission to the ceremony is by ticket only. The event will last approximately one hour. Musical selections will be performed by the Fenton choir and band as well as speeches from select members of the graduating class.

Spring Band Concert Wednesday, May 9, 7:30 p.m.

The Spring Band Concert will feature the musical talents of the Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band, and Symphonic Winds. Senior soloists will also be featured. The music of Ticheli, Whitacre, Count Basie will be performed. The concert will be held in the LewisHuffman Auditorium.

Music in the Park offers variety, family fun Everyone’s favorite free, family summer concert series, Music in the Park begins June 13 and has something to offer for all musical tastes. This year’s performers will include the always popular American English, Eagles, and Rolling Stone tribute bands, last year’s crowd favorite 7th Heaven and the groovy 60’s flashback band, the New Invaders. All concerts begin at 7:30pm and last until 10pm.

Favorite Bensenville restaurants will sell dinner and dessert items, so families can have ‘dinner in the park’ prior to the concert. Early in the evening, there will be free carriage rides and an artist drawing caricatures for kids of all ages. Each concert night will also include Classic Car Night. There is always a 50/50 split the pot raffle that benefits our local charities and civic organizations. A complete schedule is included in this newsletter and also on the Village’s website.

Our Independence Day Parade will step off Wednesday, July 4 at 10 a.m. from Town Center. The parade featuring some of the best bands, floats, and entertainment from around the region will end at Redmond Park where Libertyfest will begin immediately after.

There will be music and games throughout the festival followed by a fireworks spectacular that will light up the night skies. We will also feature a 6 wheel pony ride, petting zoo, magician and more fun activities throughout the day. Community Survey The Village of Bensenville recently commissioned the first-ever Community Survey of Bensenville residents – we are pleased to say that 79% of our residents believe the Village is headed in the right direction. The survey results have been compiled and will be presented to the Village Board at their meeting on April 24, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. Following the presentation, the survey results will be posted on the Village Website and the presentation will be rerun on cable television. The survey was distributed to a random sample of Bensenville residents and the results are statistically valid. The Village is excited to receive direct feedback from our residents on the direction the Village is heading and how we should use our resources. Thank you to those who participated!

Spring Brush Pick up begins May 29 From April through November Allied Waste will remove individual branches that are less than 3 feet in length and one inch in diameter on regular trash collection day from regular collection points in biodegradable paper bags or garbage cans with two “Yard Waste Only” labels attached. Allied Waste collects these branches with other residential yard waste. Bundled brush and branches will not be collected.

Unbundled brush and branches will be collected from single-family residences four times this year by Village Staff. For collection, brush must be placed at the curb for collection no later than 6 a.m. on Monday of the scheduled removal in neat, manageable piles. Place the cut ends of brush and branches facing the street. Individual branches must not exceed 6 inches in diameter or 10 feet in length. Please do not bundle brush and branches. To discard root balls, place small ones inside of a trash container and larger ones next to the container. You may place brush on the parkway for collection beginning the Friday before the scheduled collection week. Please note that each street will receive a single collection during a scheduled week and that placing brush or branches out after the deadline can result in a citation and no service. The project begins with a Design Day May 23 at Johnson School. This is where the fun begins!

A KaBOOM! project manager will engage the students in talking about why they like to play. Then children will draw their dream playgrounds and share their ideas for an ideal play space with the adults.

Whether it is a spiral slide, a race car, or a rocket ship, we want to hear their ideas for shaping this playground. Parents and other volunteers will use the children’s ideas to develop a wish list of playground equipment.

During the adult meeting, the KaBOOM! Project manager will also outline the important work ahead before Build Day for the Planning Committee.

District 2 is thrilled to bring this project to our community. Not only will it result in an imaginative, top-quality playground, it will serve as a catalyst in bringing together the school community at the newly expanded Johnson School.

Then the community will come together and build the playground in one day! This is a big undertaking that will require more than 150 volunteers.

Foresters will provide half the volunteers with others coming from parents and community.

Johnson School will move to the new addition while the original building renovations continue into the fall. Mohawk School will move into Johnson when the renovations are complete later in the fall and will operate as a school-within-a-school for the 2012-13 school year.

Chippewa School will combine with Tioga at the new addition, which is connected to the original school through a covered walkway. All P.E. classes will be held in the new gymnasium, and all children will eat lunch in the old gym. All music and art classes will be in the new school additions. Pre-K will be in the new addition at Tioga.

Chippewa School will be demolished in the fall. The Community Open House held April 29 was an opportunity for residents to walk the halls and visit with old classmates before the building is closed permanently. The District will hold a sale in the fall of unused or unneeded furniture and fixtures.

The Tioga School will remain standing until a second phase of construction is completed. Final drawings are underway, with construction expected to begin in 2013.

By popular vote, a new mascot has been decided for Tioga School!

Students selected The Wolves as a new mascot to kick off next school year when Chippewa and Tioga School students will be together in the expanded Tioga School.

Bensenville School District 2 is hosting a carnival May 17-20 in Bensenville Town Square. Twenty-five percent of all ride ticket proceeds will benefit the PTAs and District 2 KaBOOM! project.

Swim competitively against other Park District swim teams that form the Du Page Swim Conference. Sportsmanship and healthy competition are emphasized while having fun, learning new techniques and becoming part of a team. Any child who is 6 to 18 years of age before June 1, 2012 and who is able to swim one length of the pool using a competitive stroke is eligible to join. Parents are required to volunteer as officials and helpers for the team.

Meets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The $105 fee entitles swimmers to instructional coaching during practice, competition in weekly swim meets, ribbons, a conference patch and an end of season trophy and banquet. For further information call the Park District at 630-766-7015.
