Winter Programs at the Bensenville Library The Library has a variety of programs planned throughout the winter.

Book Discussions Each month the Library hosts several book discussion groups.

Copies of the books to be discussed are available at the Library’s circulation desk.

Mesmer performs at Big Band concert The Bensenville Wood Dale Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. Fred Lewis, will present an afternoon of Big Band Music at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 10, 2013 in the LewisHuffman Auditorium at Fenton High School.

This concert in sponsored by the Bensenville Arts Council. Special performers include Wayne Messmer and his wife, as well as Fenton alumnus Russ Phillips. This concert is one of the most popular events of the year for the Bensenville Arts Council. Conductor Fred Lewis is sure to present an afternoon to please music lovers of all ages. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for Seniors and Students and are available at the door or for presale at the Library, Village Hall and Park District.

Film Programs Join the Library at 7 p.m. at the Bensenville Theatre for our monthly film programs: January 17 — Show Boat February 5 — ParaNorman February 21 — Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Local Talent Showcase Stop by the Library from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, for our first showcase of local talent. Here’s a chance to visit with authors, musicians, chefs, artists, bakers and more. See their talents, hear their stories of careers and hobbies devoted to the arts. More information will be posted on the Library’s website in January.

Mascot Night Join the Library’s mascot, Scribbles, for a great evening of hockey fun at the Chicago Steel’s Mascot Night, Saturday, January 19, at 7 p.m. at the Edge Ice Arena. All the Chicago sports teams’ mascots will be roaming the crowd and performing their stunts on the ice. For tickets and more information, stop by the Library in January.

St. Alexis hosts Valentine dance St. Alexis will host a Valentine dinner dance on Saturday February 9, 2013 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the church, 400 W. Wood Street.

Residential Overhead Sewer & Sanitary Check Valve Program

Worried about sanitary sewer backups in your home? Village residents are eligible for Overhead Sewer and Sanitary Check valve reimbursement programs. The Village will provide a cost share program of up to 50 percent of the cost to a maximum of $750. The Village will provide 75 percent of the cost of the installation of an Overhead Sewer system with a maximum contribution of $7,500. On November 6 the Village of Bensenville voters approved a referendum question to authorize the Village to create an electric aggregation program.

This program will allow the Village to purchase electricity in aggregate from an alternative energy supplier for a significantly reduced price from the current ComEd rate. The Village expects to select a new energy supply vendor and rate in December, 2012 and anticipates the new reduced rate to go into effect by the March 2013 electric bill. Customers will still receive service and billing from ComEd and do not need to do anything in order to accept the reduced energy rate; however customers who would like to stay with ComEd’s higher energy supply rate will have a chance to ‘opt-out’ by submitting a form to the Village that will be mailed to you. Neighborhood Conversations Result in Action As part of the ongoing Strategic Planning Process, the Village of Bensenville scheduled three “Neighborhood Conversations” this fall to solicit direct feedback from our residents on Village priorities and issues in advance of adopting our annual budget. These meetings were held at Mohawk Elementary School, Tioga Elementary School, and Zion Lutheran Church. We were pleased with the attendance and participation during these meetings and left with a number of great suggestions that the Village has already put into action. A few examples are establishing a new check valve reimbursement program for sanitary sewer overflows and authorizing a four-way stop at Second Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue. More information on the Neighborhood Conversations can be found on our website www.bensenville.il.us. Stay tuned for future Neighborhood Conversations.

Electronic Recycling Closed for Winter The Bensenville Electronics Recycling drop-off program at the Public Works Facility, will not be accepting items during the winter months. Electronics recycling will resume at the Bensenville Public Works facility in May, 2013.

Senior Citizen Club Luncheon January 8 Bensenville residents age 55 and over are invited to enjoy a meal and play some bingo at Monty’s Banquet Hall located at 703 S. York Road. The January luncheon will take place on the second Tuesday, January 8, due to the first Tuesday falling on New Years Day. The cost is $4 for a great meal, raffle prizes, and bingo. If you would like to join the club, simply come to Monty’s the day of the event with your ID. Residents Reduce Your Utility Expenses

An alliance of non-profit groups, local organizations, and utility companies is helping Bensenville homeowners increase the comfort of their homes this winter.

The alliance, Energy Impact Illinois, along with your local utility, is providing rebates to help lower energy bills, improve the comfort of your home and enhance its value. Homeowners can take advantage of a $50 whole home energy analysis and for a limited time, homeowners can save 70 percent, up to $1,750, off the most cost effective and permanent energy efficiency improvements: air sealing and insulating. All Bensenville homeowners are eligible for this program.

More than half of total energy costs come from heating and cooling a home and almost all homes let too much air escape or penetrate. Most homes also have incorrectly installed or insufficient amounts of attic insulation. Air sealing and insulating a home are some easy, right-now steps homeowners can take to reduce energy bills and create a more comfortable home for winter.

Small Business Energy Savings If you own or operate a small business, you can save significantly by signing up for the electricity supply offering through Clean Air Counts, an environmental initiative developed and run by the non-for-profit Metropolitan Mayors Caucus (MMC). Most communities in the Chicago region belong to the MMC and participate in its Clean Air Counts campaign, whose mission is to reduce air pollution in Chicagoland. Through its Energy Saving Program (ESP), MMC is offering lower-cost electricity supply along with energy-saving Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) to businesses that sign up. Use of CFLs reduces the need for pollution-spewing electricity generation plants in Chicagoland, thus contributing to cleaner air and furthering Clean Air Counts mission. In addition, for every new ESP member, CFLs are distributed to patrons of local food pantries.

The Energy Saving Program is the only program that addresses sustainability holistically, through its “three pillars”: economics, the environment, and social justice. To date, ESP has provided $1.5 million in future electricity supply savings for ESP customers and for families in need (through the ESP CFL-Food Pantry Program).

Bensenville Intergovernmental Group Sponsors Student Council Members Student council members from Fenton High School and Blackhawk Middle School participated in the Bensenville Intergovernmental Group (BIG) Program.

The program introduces students to local government. The culminating activity was the BIG Student Leadership Board meeting in which student council members provide community updates and discuss relevant community issues.

FHS Welcomes Italian Students from Sicily

On Tuesday, November 20 through December 2 the Village of Bensenville and Fenton High School welcomed 14 students from Cefalù, Sicily. The foreign exchange program was organized by Sister Cities and made possible through the support of the Village of Bensenville and Gullo International Development Corporation. Fenton staff members Bill Dal Cerro and Nicole Hendricks assisted the teachers and chaperones when they visited Fenton. The Italian students lived with Fenton host families, shadowed the students during the school day, and had the opportunity to visit many popular Chicago sites. In addition, the Italian students spent Thanksgiving with their host families.

“Packing meals was an excellent way for athletes, students, and staff to come together to help others and to learn more about the world around them,” commented Coach Alvarez.

Each food pack contains six servings and volunteers worked in an assembly line format to pour, measure, seal, and pack the meals. For only 25 cents per meal, Kids Around the World is able to package and ship globally these lifesaving meals. The rice and soy-based meals are specially formulated with protein, vitamins and minerals. In some instances this is the only meal that a Liberian child will have during a day.

The Fenton High School Boys Soccer Program partnered with Kids Around the World to pack 57,000 nutritious meals for needy children living in Liberia. Under the direction of soccer coaches, David Alvarez and Nick Falco, and with tremendous support from the FHS Student Council, over 150 volunteers packed the meals in the field house at Fenton.

The meals will go to Margibi, Liberia along with a playground to be built for the children living there.

Mohawk Alumni Celebrate History Mohawk School alumni joined their principal, George Peternal, center, back row, to reminisce and reconnect at the Mohawk School Walk Down Memory Lane Dec. 1. Mr. Peternal was principal of Mohawk for 21 years.

The school opened in 1955 and closed at winter break 2012.

School Board Member Receives ‘Master’ Status School Board Member Kathleen Bossier was awarded the Master School Board Member status by the Illinois Association of School Boards.

The designation means Ms. Bossier had devoted more the 200 hours to selfimprovement and leadership activities, including attending state and national conferences, serving on statewide committees and participating as a voting delegate or presenting seminars.

Kathleen Bossier has been a Board Member since 1991. She is currently

Vice President of the Board and also served as Vice President from 19911993. She served as president from 1993-2001.

School Nurse Receives State Recognition District Nurse Kathryn Olson, RN, Med, ICSN, was named as Illinois School Nurse Administrator of the Year.

Mrs. Olson joins a select few school nurses in the state to receive this honor from the Illinois Association of School Nurses. This award was based on achievement, leadership and services to the state association and community as well as direct and outstanding service to children.

The Library offers a variety of storytime options throughout the year. Babies from 6 to 24 months and their favorite adult are invited to join Miss Bonnie on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. for Books & Babies. Children 2 and 3 years old and their favorite adult can join Miss Bonnie on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. for Tales for Tots. Both storytimes feature stories, songs, and rhymes, followed by group play. Children 4 and 5 years old are invited to join Miss Diane for stories and crafts on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. at Growing Readers. Our new storytime sessions kick-off the week of January 7. Registration is required to attend these programs. Unable to register for one of our weekly storytimes? The Library offers Drop-in Storytime on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Come enjoy great stories and more — no registration required!

Playgroups at the Library Children between the ages of 2 and 4 years old are invited to join us on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. for Play to Learn, the Library’s morning playgroup.

Enjoy an hour of play during which you and your child may socialize with other parents and caregivers while working on their fine and gross motor skills.

Registration is requested but not required to attend. The new session of Play to Learn kicks of January 9. Can’t make our weekday playgroup? Children between the ages of 2 and 4 years old are invited to join us every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon for Club Play, the Library’s Saturday morning drop-in playgroup. No registration is required to attend! The new session of Club Play kicks off January 12.

The Library will be closed February 18 for President’s Day.

Calling all LEGO builders! Join us every month for LEGO Night at the Library. Forty builders will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. LEGO Night will be held at 6:30 p.m. on:

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with the Library! Join us Wednesday, February 6, at 6:30 p.m. for a card making extravaganza. We’ll use glitter, stickers, lace and more to create cards for your friends and family. This program is suitable for children 10 years old and younger and their parents.
