EDITOR’S NOTE If only Findus had taken a leaf out of Ronseals book then I wouldn’t have to sit eating my Microwave Lasagne with a bottle of Piriton beside me.

You see, I’m allergic to Horses, a fact I discovered much to my horror during a trip to Tunisia. Waiting at a set of traffic lights with my window down, a Camel pulled up alongside me (as they do in Tunisia). Very rudely, it decided to shove its head through my narrow open window forcing its left nostril to touch my forehead.

In a very manly fashion I managed to waft my arms and flap my legs in order to remove the beast’s head from my very small hire car.

It was only minutes later that the whole left side of my face had blown up like a balloon and my right eye looked like I’d spent 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. I don’t find myself in a similar experience with Camels as I travel down Warwick Road, however, recently my little girls came home wafting prize rosettes they’d received from a horse riding day. Within minutes, that familiar tingle of the throat, and itch in the eye, had me running for the Piriton.

Ronseal tell us what’s in the tin and it’s a shame food manufacturers can’t do the same. I’d turn to Quorn like my wife, but I’d rather eat the cardboard box it comes in.

My motto in life ‘Keep it simple’ or I suppose another that comes to mind... ‘Keep working - it keeps you young’ The person I most admire I admire my wife and I admire anyone who works hard to get where they want to be.

My life would be a lot easier if all the administration and red tape that goes along with running a business nowadays was reduced - Hairdressing is the easy part of the job!

My simple solution Many bureaucrats, as highly qualified and intelligent as they are, do not understand the basics of running a business and the pressures involved. Most councils, NHS, etc know pretty much how much money they will earn, within reason, during the year - but when you open a shop, you don’t. It would be great if people in positions of administration had previous experience in running their own business so they could fully empathise with what small businesses go through.

I thoroughly enjoyed “Quartet” recently too, staring Billy Connelly and Tom Courtenay - it was a really pleasant film From Top: to watch.

Blend in darker color, but keep dark color below the crease Now the base and eyeliner are, you need to get a darker eyeshadow shade.

Using an eyeshadow brush blend in color starting at your lash line, blending up. Make sure to blend color into the lash line so the eye liner disappears. Stop deep color at crease. The key here is to blend, blend, blend.

Mascara You’ll want to apply a few coats of mascara so lashes are thick and dark.

I

would not class myself as a horsey person, however being from an upper middle class family, (have I mentioned I have family in Stanwix before?) we have had a horse in the family for many years. Sadly this era came to an end this month with the passing of Findus IV (to give him his full title), an unpleasant beast but with a rather nice paddock and stable block.

After taking advice from Councilor X he assured me the quickest way to get planning permission on this piece of prime greenbelt was to become a Civic Dignitary. I needed a fast track approach and he suggested the position of Sheriff of Brampton. I needed a plan to win over the country folk of Brampton.

By tackling local issues I would have a chance to show myself as a caring, empathetic leader. What better way to make an impact on the Town than sort out Toxic Tarn !

Being unsure of the level of danger involved I went through my wardrobe and happened upon the ideal outfit.

Following the successful “Protect and Survive” nuclear attack campaign in the 1970’s, I had wisely invested in a silver foil protective suit along with a selection of dried fruit, the fruit tasted a little fusty but the suit seemed in fine condition other than a somewhat awkward zip. (I was pleased I had longer than a 4 minute warning to fiddle on with it).

Unable to find the helmet to complete the outfit I opted for a snorkel and mask, you cannot be too careful.

Arriving at Toxic Tarn I parked in the free disabled section and put up my blue badge. (Good value at £25 cash and a bottle of gin from the Parish Council Office).

I did feel quite resplendent as the sunlight caught the shiny suit as I marched authoritatively towards the Tarn with my sample jars, causing quite a stir amongst the dog walkers and yummy mummy’s in the playground.

Having obtained my samples I left the now curiously deserted Tarn ( I blame the car park fees) and headed back to the car now feeling less resplendent and more like a oven ready chicken in my foil suit as the sun beat down and now unable to unzip said suit (clearly well designed to remain zipped for 2000 years until the radiation subsided).

As I exited the bumpy track I spotted my acquaintances from the Carlisle Golf Club clearly on some kind of away game fixture. I waved enthusiastically with four fingers using both hands and shouting golf speak - howzat, deuce - but they disappeared quickly into a bunker clearly embarrassed to be seen in Brampton - people can be such snobs !

Drip, drip, drop little April showers – it isn’t just Disney that enchants. With the herald of spring, nature depends on those showers to make her garden grow. We depend on hydration too and yet surprisingly few of us meet, or know our recommended quota.

Being even slightly de-hydrated can make you tired, headachy and cold.

Without any time taken from your day you could have a new energy and glow. In my research very few hands went up when I asked who actually knew how much water they should drink. My conclusion? There is room for improvement.

To find out how much water your need simply divide your weight in pounds by two and use that number for your recommended intake of fluid ounces. You will find there is just over 35 fluid ounces in one litre.

There are outward signs to look for if you think you may be de-hydrated.

For example, try pinching your skin.

It should ping back - if it doesn’t you may well need to up your intake.

Fine lines form when the skin isn’t plumped up.

Your body, the clever machine that it is, will retain anything it is afraid it will not get enough of. So you can look forward to a flatter tummy if you keep yourself fully hydrated.

So, to keep your cells young-looking and fighting fit is super easy. Just drink up.

As we say goodbye to winter we can knock the central heating off and dust ourselves down. Emerging into a glorious spring.

’ve got quite used to the nice lady on my little Garmin satnav declaring on my arrival that....“You have arrived”. The sat nav that comes with this particular motor says...”No, really - you HAVE arrived!”

There are some pretty decent cars out there, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Bentley, Rolls Royce to name a few, but they are cars which specialise in one or two things - either outright performance or outright luxury. Not the Range Rover. This covers almost every base there is to be covered.

Yes, you can have a well specced up Mercedes S Class or a BMW 7 Series, a Bentley or even a Rolls Royce, they all will give you that feeling of extreme comfort and luxury, but the Range Rover gives you more. Can you take one of the afore mentioned down a bridleway to your favourite picnic spot in the country, do you dare to even think about taking one of those cars out when there is more than half a millimetre of snow on the ground? The answer is most definitely not, that is why to many, the Range Rover is the ultimate in fulfilling their motoring needs. It’s so practical, there is acres of space, and so refined on every level. The attention to detail on display in this car is amazing, in particular, the Hifi system. The model I was testing, the TDV6 Vogue SE, had a 825w Meridian Surround Sound Audio System. The casing the speakers sit in, the amplifier, the stitching on the leather, not to mention the clarity of sound that is produced - it’s true craftsmanship.

Pressure washers are powerful and quick for removing muck but when directed where bearings are located they can force water, dirt and degreaser past the bearing seals into areas that contain oil or grease. When water and muck get into moving parts the oil/grease mixes into a sort of paste and is very abrasive. This will increase wear and because the lubrication is ineffective corrosion will likely occur too.

Proper lubrication is essential. Without proper lubrication your bike will wear prematurely resulting in costly repairs. Most of the moving components on your bike need to be lubricated regularly, especially the chain, cables, and wheel bearings, etc. Forcing water past the seals on suspension forks is something to be carefully avoided.

It is important to keep braking areas free of lubricants. If your bike is fitted with disc brakes do not get lubricants onto the callipers or rotors. Contaminated brake pads will need to be replaced. Particularly during winter road use, water and salt may get into the thread on the headset, derailleurs, and other parts of your bike, etc. This may cause corrosion and seizure of nuts, bolts and metal components. SPOTLIGHT ON After leaving Harraby School, Sandra has worked in a variety of jobs over the years. She attended Carlisle College, completing a secretarial course, followed by an access course a few years later.

(She fitted these courses around her children). Afterwards, she always seemed to find herself in Catering, which then seemed her obvious choice of career.

It wasn’t until her late twenties that she finally found what she wanted to do. Carlisle College offered her a place on a ‘European funded’ Hairdressing Course which enabled her to train whilst still having two young children. She was also fortunate to find a placement at ‘The Mop Shop, a city centre salon. After her training, she was able to stay on and when the salon changed to ‘Sculpture House’ she was offered a permanent position. She stayed there for ten years before she took the plunge and opened her own salon ‘Angel’ on Scotland Road. After seven busy and successful years she passed over the reins to her colleague and stayed on for a further three years.

Needing a challenge she was ready to go again and her new salon ‘the Gallery’ was opened two years ago.

If I weren’t talking to you right now I’d be... in the thick of running this busy salon. I’ve just returned from a skiing holiday so I have a lot to catch up with, members of staff, meetings with Loreal reps etc.

A phrase I use far too often... Well I received a

It’s only through life experience that we develop confidence in our own abilities and we shouldn’t be so quick to be critical of others. For instance, if a young trainee has never been shown how to use professional scissors or a brush, to criticize her would be so harsh and unfair. We are here to teach young ones which takes patience and involves giving of your time to others.

I am not a politician but….. I would try and help young woman see the importance of having a strong family unit around them when deciding upon having a baby. It seems much of society has lost these true family values which in the past were instilled at a very young age.

I’m pretty good at... Listening.

Hairdressing is about the clients needs, not what style we think they should have.
