We chat to a few of the Village’s many multi-generational families about Mother’s Day

In memory of Fella Hamilton

It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to founder and matriarch Fella Hamilton, who passed away peacefully on 15 November 2023, surrounded by her family in Melbourne.

Born in 1925, Fella lived to the incredible age of 97. With her husband Heinz, she raised three children, Danny, Ann, and David; became a mother-in-law to Michael and Sharon, proud grandmother to Jason, Toni, Vicky, Joel, Dana and Charlie, and great-grandmother to Goldie and Summer.

Fella was intelligent, vivacious, funny and incredibly stylish. She led an amazing life, launching her clothing business in 1969 at age 43 and working into her late 70s, when she left the business in the capable hands of her daughter and son.

We share a deep gratitude for Fella’s passion, dedication, determination, and love. Her legacy lives on through her children and their amazing work in the Fella Hamilton business.

WHAT’S THE FAMILY STORY BEHIND LEISURES?

My grandmother, Eunice Jackson, had a shoe store here in the 1960s. Growing up, I used to work in the store – I suppose it’s what we’d call ‘child labour’ now, but I loved it. I then opened Leisures as a separate brand and business 25 years ago.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MOTHER’S DAY GIFT TO GIVE?

Slippers or accessories – slippers for that comfy stay-at-home feel. We also have a large accessory range at Leisures: handbags, scarves, hats, gloves, shawls, ponchos and some jewellery.

HOW DO YOU NORMALLY SPEND MOTHER’S DAY?

We have a multi-generational catchup with my mum Barbara, my wife Liz, and our three adult kids.

HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE ‘MUM LIFE’ BALANCE?

With great difficulty! In all honesty, it’s a constant juggle, that requires a lot of planning, good communication and a supportive team and family to make it happen.

FAVOURITE MOTHER’S DAY GIFT TO RECEIVE?

I love anything from the school Mother’s Day stall as the kids put a lot of thought into the gifts; however, what I really cherish are the handwritten cards and drawings.

FAVOURITE WAY TO SPEND MOTHER’S DAY?

An oat latte in bed, with marmalade toast surrounded by everyone squeezed in, including Winnie, our bordoodle.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO WORK WITH FAMILY?

ALYCE: We enjoy doing it: we love fashion, we love clothing, and anything that helps the store, we just talk to each other about it. It’s not hard work at all!

DO YOU HAVE ANY MOTHER’S DAY TRADITIONS?

ELIZABETH: We have lunch together, including my mum – all the generations.

WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO GIFT TO GIVE FOR MOTHER’S DAY?

ALYCE: We usually give her beauty or spa vouchers.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING WITH FAMILY?

EMMA: We enjoy working alongside our father, Bill. Dad has owned the St Ives Village Newsagency for over three decades and we’ve been part of the journey for the past 14 years. We share a strong bond, personally and professionally. With two children each, we juggled our responsibilities at the shop during our pregnancies. As babies, our little ones would occasionally accompany us to work, and even now, during the school holidays, they can be spotted lending a hand around the shop.

FAVOURITE MOTHER’S DAY GIFT TO RECEIVE?

EMMA: A handmade card plus something special that the kids have selected from the school Mother’s Day stall. I do also love the indulgence of a beauty treatment or massage.
