Two local state senators are among the leading candidates to succeed the retiring John Cullerton as the president of the Illinois Senate. Sen. Kimberly Lightford (D-Maywood) and Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) spent last weekend on the phone, calling colleagues trying to line up support for their respective bids to become the leader of the state Senate. Cullerton (D-Chicago) set off the scramble when he made the surprise announcement on Nov. 14 that he would retire in January in the middle of his term. Cullerton’s successor as Senate president will be chosen in January after he resigns in a vote by the members of the Senate. Lightford’s 4th District includes much of Proviso Township. Maywood meatpacker recalls 500K lbs. of pork
USDA says Morris Meat Packing was selling items that weren’t subject to federal inspection By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
Morris Meat Packing, 1406 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, has recalled approximately 515,000 pounds of raw pork products “that
were produced without the benefit of federal inspection and outside inspection hours,” according to a statement released Nov. 21 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The statement notes that the “raw, intact pork items were produced” on Saturdays from Nov. 25, 2017 to Nov. 9 of this year. The FSIS said that they discovered the problem See MORRIS MEAT on page 3
