his summer, Village Books and Paper Dreams proudly introduced Round It Up, our new, amazingly simple giving program for local nonprofits. Each season, we’ll feature a different partner that will benefit when you choose to Round It Up, increasing your purchase to the nearest dollar. The nonprofit will receive the difference.

Our first non-profit partner was Recreation Northwest.

During June, July and August, over 1,000 customers rounded up their Village Books and Paper Dreams purchases to support Recreation Northwest’s efforts to clean up trails in Fairhaven Park and to get more people outdoors through their Parkscriptions Program.

In September and October, the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center (WDRC) will be our Round It Up partner. The WDRC offers conflict prevention and intervention services for businesses, organizations, individuals, and families. On a prevention level, the WDRC seeks to build the capacity of community members to better manage conflict as it arises, and to learn ways to minimize the possibility of it occurring.

Building Community One Book at a Time

Dear Reader,

For us, autumn is always a time for reflection and hope ... a time to think back to summer vacation and the fun we had with family and friends and the anticipation as kids head back to school: pencils sharp, erasers still pink, crisp air and pumpkins turning orange and ripening on the vine. It also brings new reading potential as we find ourselves wanting to nestle into a cozy corner of the sofa with a hot cup of tea and a new book.

Authors bring delightful new stories to us in the autumn and it is this excitement that stirs in booksellers as we share them with you, our devoted customers. We hope you enjoy reading about all the new books our Fairhaven and Lynden staff are passionate about and we look forward to talking to you personally about our newest favorites.

We have a lot of exciting events this time of year. In September, Paul and Kelly tour the San Juans with author Jim Lynch on the Schooner Zodiac for our second Books A'Sail, our book group at sea (see page 10). Our favorite Seattle librarian and literary critic Nancy Pearl will be joining us not once but twice for her new novel and the Annual Literacy Breakfast (see pages 11 & 41).

Banned Books week is the last week of September. This is a favorite for staff as we enjoy the heated discussions that ensue when we see the list of personal beloved books that have reached the banned book list. We look forward to the day when we no longer need to have a Banned Books Week.

Look for a pair of new October events in Fairhaven and Lynden that we hope will become an annual tradition: these Book Group Mixers (see page 4) will bring people together with the same passions ... reading books, talking about books, and, of course, wine. And helping us to spread the word about all these great happenings are our two newest additions to our marketing team, Mary Vermillion and Abbie Schollmeier (see page 5).

id you know Village Books and Paper Dreams employs 50 local community members? According to our friends at Sustainable Connections, small local businesses like Village Books are the largest employer nationally and, in our community, provide the most jobs to residents. We also know the personal interests and skills of our wise and wonderful staff are what make our business distinctive and truly rewarding to shop.

When you have a team of this size, there’s bound to be change. We recently celebrated major milestones. When 10-year employee Jonica Todd retired, it created a great opportunity for bookseller Lauren Sommer, who succeeded Jonica as a book buyer. Book buyer Joan Terselich marked her 20th year at Village Books in May. In celebration, owners Paul Hanson, Kelly Evert and Sarah Hutton presented Joan with an all-expense-paid trip of her choosing. Read about Joan’s adventure on page 40.

There have been changes within our marketing team, too. Mary Vermillion joined Village Books and Paper Dreams as its marketing director in May. She will work with owners Kelly, Sarah and Paul to develop strategies that further connect Village Books with the community and raise awareness of the store’s programs and services.

"We're excited to welcome Mary into the Village Books and Paper Dreams team,” Paul said.

“We've known her for many years because she is an avid reader and writer who is actively involved with community organizations Village Books supports. The grace, wisdom, and experience she brings will help us to expand our community building efforts."

And 2016 Western Washington University graduate and bookseller Abbie Schollmeier took over our digital marketing when Amy Blackwood left in July to focus on her writing and editing business. Prior to moving into the digital marketing role, Abbie was on the floor as a bookseller and behind the scenes working in inventory and online orders. "Abbie has an incredibly valuable perspective from her previous roles here at Village Books," Kelly said. "We love the energy and creativity she brings to Village Books and Paper Dreams digital presence, which includes our social media, website and customer emails."

On the floor, you’ll meet newly hired booksellers: Bellingham based Western Washington University students Emma Bachmeier, Candee Blanc, Kelli Terpsma, and Clarissa Williams; Lynden based WWU students Hannah Emory and Lauryn Paoli; Lynden local Sofia Bouma; and Bellingham locals Adam Kane, Jenni McDowell, and Etta Morris. At press time, we were in the process of hiring additional team members to help you while shopping at Village Books and Paper Dreams.

BIG RIDE redux I

A 2000 Mile Fundraiser - Still a Chance to Donate

n the summer of 2015 Chuck set out to ride his bicycle from Bellingham to his hometown of Galva, Illinois — a distance of about 2400 miles. Things went well until the 37th riding day when he was attacked by dogs, thus ending the fundraising ride that had yielded pledges of nearly $30,000. Fortunately, most folks honored their pledges…as did Chuck.

Two years have passed and Chuck’s ready to climb back on the bike. Beginning the ride on September 1st where he went down and, after saying hello to those dogs, he’ll pedal on to Bar Harbor, Maine—a distance of about 2000 miles.

Once again, Chuck is pledging $1 per mile to each of three organizations: • Whatcom Community Foundation • Whatcom Community College • The Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc)

Banned Books Week Celebrates Our Right to Read Mark Banned Books Week with Village Books and Paper Dreams

B

anned Books Week, the annual celebration of the freedom to read, begins September 24th at Village Books and Paper Dreams. For this year’s celebration, the national coalition of organizations that sponsors Banned Books Week will emphasize the importance of the First Amendment, which guarantees our inherent right to read.

According to the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) – which tracks reports of book challenges and bans and compiles an annual Top Ten Challenged Books List—there was an alarming 17% increase in book censorship complaints in 2016. Since most challenges are not reported, the actual number is probably much higher. Even more disturbing, while only 10% of the titles reported to OIF are normally removed from the institutions receiving the challenges, half of the most frequently challenged books were banned last year.

The Banned Books Week Coalition (BBWC) is responding with “Our Right To Read,” a celebration of the diverse range of ideas found in books, and our right as citizens to make our own intellectual choices. Village Books will join the celebration with window displays, a public “Read In” of select banned books, and other activities. Visit villagebooks. com for the full list of activities. Set amid the 1999 World Trade Organization protests in Seattle, it’s a fast-paced, raw and absorbing story about conflict and compassion. Over the course of one afternoon, the lives of seven people will change forever. Sunil Yapa pairs deep rage with deep humanity. He asks profound questions about the power of empathy in our hyper-connected modern world, and about the limits of compassion, while exploring how far we must go for family, for justice, and for love.

Lucky Number Seven Chuckanut Writers Conference Marks Successful Seventh Season

A

few days before the June 23rd and 24th Chuckanut Writers Conference, I saw former Village Books events coordinator lNan Macy on the main floor of Village Books. A member of the inaugural conference planning team, Nan is writing a book and told me that just a day or so before she had decided to register for the seventh annual conference. Her trigger?

Nature writer and environmental activist Kathleen Dean Moore was on the faculty. For Nan, the chance to learn from a writer she deeply admires was impossible to pass up.

And that’s how it goes with the Chuckanut Writers Conference, a partnership between Village Books and Whatcom Community College. Each person who attends the annual gathering of writers comes for very personal reasons. For Nan, it was the chance to gain inspiration from a favorite writer. For others, the conference is a time to focus and polish their craft. For those who sign up for a pitch session with an agent, it’s a first step to see if they’re on the right track to possible publication.

While the goals vary, everyone has one thing in common: a love of the written word. That shared appreciation creates what feels very much like a gathering of friends. Veterans who have attended all seven conferences greet each other at the bookstore we set up on campus. Faculty buy books written by other faculty members … and ask for autographs. New friendships are made during breaks on WCC’s sunny open plaza. Writers achieve a-ha moments in intimate break-out sessions with respected authors.

Faculty tell us Chuckanut is the friendliest conference they attend. For the past three years, conference coordinator Jessica Lohafer has helped to set that tone. An accomplished poet, Jessica is also a world-class hugger and first-rate advocate for writers of all ages. This was her last conference as coordinator. We’re placing bets as to when she’ll return as faculty. Thank you, Jessica, for your attention to detail, your inspired suggestions of new voices as teaching faculty, and for the energy you shared with all who attended or planned the conference.

Jessica is leaving the conference in the capable hands of new coordinator Kaity Teer. Our organizing committee of Whatcom Community College and Village Books staff is already planning for 2018 by reviewing feedback from this year’s attendees and starting our list of dream team faculty. We hope you’ll join us for next year's conference.

Oh, and one more thing about Nan’s 2017 Chuckanut Writers Conference. Proving it may just be the friendliest conference going, take a look at the image at right. That’s Nan having lunch with Kathleen Dean Moore. It doesn’t get much friendlier that that.

Hits a Milestone 20 Years of Sharing a Passion for Books

I

f I think of 20 years as 20 years, it seems like a long time. If I think of 20 years ago as 1997, it seems like just yesterday.

If I try to think of Village Books without Joan, who celebrated 20 years with us this year, it’s nigh impossible. Her hard work, dedication, and great recommendations have proved crucial to our success. And one of the traditions we’re proud to carry on is celebrating our employees who reach this milestone with a trip to the destination of their choice. Joan, in keeping with her kind heart and fierce love of the Pacific Northwest, chose to share this trip with her family and had a great time exploring our corner of the country.

Joan traveled in Seattle, Anacortes, Celebrates with Family! and Bellingham with her niece's family including children Tim, 13; Magdalena, 11; and Tobias, 6. They spent time enjoying the Pike Place Market and a delicious Indian dinner in Seattle. Highlights for the kids included a trip to the Boeing Future of Flight Center that interested Tim, who enjoys tech and engineering; the Seattle Aquarium and PacMam in Anacortes for Magdalena, who loves marine biology; and, of course, a monorail ride for train-loving Tobias.

Closer to home, everyone had a blast whale-watching and experiencing the Farmers Market and our local museums. Reflecting on the time spent with her family, Joan said, “I had lots of fun with my family, cooking together and sharing meals, getting to know the kids better, including compassionate tech tutorials for auntie (me), and a newly formed mutual appreciation society with my family and cats. It was very special for me to be able to treat my family to their first Pacific Northwest experience. The kids had never been outside of Colorado!” We’re glad that everyone had a wonderful time and are truly appreciative of Joan and all of the hard work she has done through the years. Thank you, Joan!

Bellingham TheatreWorks continues its commitment to celebrating stories of significance to the Pacific Northwest by premiering Steve Lyons' comedy Mrs. Bave Presents the Pig War. Based in part upon historian Mike Vouri’s The inspirational book The Pig War, the center of this play is, yes, tale of diplomacy the Pig War of 1859, which was a border dispute triumphing over between the United States and Britain over the San Juan Islands that was ignited by the shooting war, as told by the of a British boar by an American farmer. This war mannequins who is significant because ultimately there was no war! were there.

Peace was chosen over war. This is one of the few examples in our country’s history of diplomacy triumphing over war.

Subtitled “The almost true story of a play that nearly happened about a war that never occurred,” this comedy is inspired by the wacky, true tale of Emilia Bave and her play about the Pig War, titled “The San Juan Saga.” Originally presented in 1959, Mrs. Bave’s play featured mannequin actors because no one on San Juan Island wanted to be in her play! Using her mannequin cast, she presented her play to unsuspecting visitors for nearly 20 years.

In the new Mrs. Bave Presents the Pig War, her cantankerous Pig War mannequins spring to life, and take over the telling of the amazing and inspiring Pig War tale.

Adam Silvera’s latest novel is sure to make you cry. They Both Die at the End is set in an alternate reality where each person gets a call on the day they are going to die, letting them know. Two boys start out their End Day as strangers, but for different reasons they both search for a Last Friend to share their last day with. They find each other and attempt to live out a lifetime in one day. It’s devastating, it’s beautiful, and it’s one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. –Gretal M. age 18

Local History!

In 1859 Great Britain and the United States almost went to war over ownership of the San Juan Islands. Ignited by the shooting of a British boar by an American farmer, the flames of war were fanned on both sides by nationalistic fervor in the military, the public, and the press.

But peace was ultimately chosen over war, with the single casualty of the Pig War being the eponymous pig. Ranger Michael Vouri worked for San Juan Island National Historical Park as the Chief of Interpretation and Historian.

Laurel was one of the founding coordinators of the Chuckanut Writers Conference. She's a talented editor and a major activist for the arts in Bellingham. If you see her, give her a big thank you for that and for hosting our Open Mic so well for so many years.

Starting September 25th, Andrew McBride will begin hosting the Open Mics. You may recognize Andrew from the many times he's worked with clients up in the Writers Corner. He, too, is an editor and has helped many local writers with their books that are now on our shelves. CAROL DAVIS –Because I Cannot Leave This Body In her new poetry collection, Carol V. Davis crosses cultural and geographic boundaries to explore her family’s history as Jews, as outsiders, as immigrants. Ranging from Los Angeles to Nebraska to Germany to Russia, she probes the boundaries between faith, folklore, and superstition, trying to find her own way through terrain both menacing and inviting. Her restless mind is most at home at the uncomfortable edges where solace, when found, is ephemeral and fragmentary. Poet Carol Davis is the author of the full-length poetry collections It’s Time to Talk About…/Pora Govorit’o, a bilingual collection published in Russia; Into the Arms of Pushkin: Poems of St. Petersburg, winner of the T.S. RICHARD WIDERKEHR –In the Presence of Absence and BARBARA BLOOM –Pulling Down the Heavens Richard Widerkehr’s In the Presence of Absence brings together elegies, journeys, and love poems. Gayle Kaune said the book is filled with gratitude earned by paying attention to the small moments that make up a reverent life: the black trees reflected in a roadside puddle, a mother’s slow passing and the tenderness with which the poet stands witness to her death: I must be true/to your story./ I can’t tell it/one spoonful at a time. This book details a heart that is wide open to both the pain and beauty of life. Widerkehr sings Kaddish for his father, admires bikini-clad women on a resort beach in Mexico, and observes his own cancer surgery, all the while knowing we are just passing through.

BARBARA BLOOM: On Pulling Down the Heavens, Joe Stroud said, “Barbara Bloom’s poems are a clear window into the world of wonder, of a childhood lived in the wilds of British Columbia, of a commitment to family and friendship, and an abiding reverence for the natural world.” The poems are autobiographical, touching on topics from childhood to the present.

Saturday, November 4, 7pm GARY McWILLIAMS –The Anchor & the Pick How did the gold get there? Where are crystals found? Written for the boat traveler, The Anchor and the Pick is both science and storytelling about the rocks and minerals of Southeast Alaska. Specific locations are listed. Gary McWilliams owned and operated a charter boat in Alaska specializing in geology charters, working mainly for the U.S. Geological Survey. Always loving rocks and minerals, he learned much on his charters about the geology of Southeast Alaska. Now, a full time resident of Whatcom County, McWilliams writes stories in the mornings and does stone sculpture in the afternoons. His two previous books are Wanderlusting and A Different Window.
