Building Community One Book at a Time

Dear Reader,

When we were young we scoffed at the notion that time would speed up as we aged. Now, in our thirty-first year of Village Books, it seems that the interval between annual events has shrunk to far less than a year. So the fact that this is our Holiday edition of the Chuckanut Reader comes as a bit of a shock to us. That said, much has transpired in the past year. We've hosted dozens of authors, printed hundreds of books on our Espresso Book Machine (including Chuck's book, It Takes a Village Books), helped match readers with thousands of books, and celebrated our 30th Birthday as Whatcom County's Favorite Bookstore. Not bad for a span of time that seems like a couple of months.

And now, in spite of our shock, we bring you our 2010 Holiday edition of the Chuckanut Reader, chock full of book previews and reviews—including some exciting news about a "big" NW book, information about upcoming events, a story about two new books from Chuckanut Editions, a selection of non-book items for holiday gift giving, a reminder of our 16th annual Giving Tree, and many more items of interest to avid readers.

With a constant barrage of bad economic news and stories of chaos in the book business, we're asked much more often these days about how we're doing. These are very difficult times for independent bookstores (and many other small independent businesses), and we certainly appreciate your concern and support. It's important for all of us to remember that where we buy things makes a huge difference to the quality of life in our community. It makes a difference in how our community looks and feels, in our economic health, and how local non-profits improve the livability of our area. Thank you for what you do to keep our community healthy and livable.

Giving Tree Books for Local Kids & Families in Need Can you imagine not receiving a book for the holidays? Some kids don't have to use their imaginations. For 15 years we've provided books for thousands of kids who would not otherwise have received them. Last year, because of your generosity, we gave books to more than 2000 kids through a dozen local organizations! And in case you hadn't noticed, it doesn't seem that things have gotten much better for a lot of folks.

So, pick an ornament-tag from the GIVING TREE on the store's main floor and match it with a book of your choice. The books you purchase for giving tree recipients will be offered at a 20% discount and will be distributed to kids through community organizations, the week before Christmas.

Wings by Cindi Williamson “Wings” evokes so many ideas, concepts, and images, that words can only constrain and force into simple terms something that surely should set the imagination free. We are so pleased that Cindi Williamson, VB staff member, will be presenting a solo show around the idea of ‘wings.’ Cindi uses found objects, words, and ideas in a truly unique and bold manner. Each mixed-media piece will contain altered books, or pages out of books. (See if you can identify the altered objects in each piece.) Come in and be prepared to fly!

Whatcom Literacy Council

Chuck, Dee and Village Books At their 8th Annual Literacy Breakfast on November 4th, the Whatcom Literacy Council honored Chuck, Dee, and Village Books with their First Friends Award.

For more than 20 years Village Books has supported the organization in a number of ways. In addition to the Anniversary Walk/Run for Literacy, which this year raised nearly $3000, the store has participated in every Trivia Bee (and the spelling bee that preceded it), provided tutor space, promoted the organization through its publications, and donated thousands of dollars from Harry Potter events.

Chuckanut Radio Hour is (Doubly) On the Air The Chuckanut Radio Hour, which will celebrate its fourth anniversary in January and has been regularly broadcast on KMRE 102.3 FM, has recently made the leap to KVOS TV as well.

In August KVOS began taping our shows for replay, four times in the following month.

Each of the shows will first air on a Saturday at 4 pm, then the next day and the following Saturday and Sunday at 4 AM (yes, AM—unless you're an insomniac, you might want to set your recorder for these airings).

Chuckanut Editions Releases Two Books

Village Books' imprint, Chuckanut Editions, will publish two books that will be great gifts for the holiday season. One is a republication of a book you may remember—The Great Bellingham Fish Book. The other is a brand new book from Cascadia Weekly columnist and Chuckanut Radio Hour regular Alan Rhodes, Returning to the Branch.

The Great Bellingham Fish Book by the Bellingham Branch of AAUW In 1983 the Bellingham branch of the American Association of University Women published a book that became very popular, but had a relatively short life. The Great Bellingham Fish Book was a rare combination of history, folklore, and cookbook, with some great illustrations.

The first printing of the book sold out and the volume was reprinted in 1985. It wasn't long before that printing was exhausted and for twenty-five years it didn't see the light of day.

The book is once more available in its original form, with only a short foreword and new introduction added. It even has its great original cover design of salmon can labels. For cooking, learning about the area's fishing industry, or reading about local history, it's hard to beat The Great Bellingham Fish Book.

Returning to the Branch: Selected Writings

Anyone who has every read one of Alan Rhodes' columns or seen him deliver one of his essays on the Chuckanut Radio Hour knows this guy can be really funny and a bit serious at the same time. Whether he's examining the issue of growth, comparing Hamsters (Bellingham residents, not furry mammals) to Whatcomites, or exhorting the importance of free speech, he can make nearly anyone laugh—often at ourselves.

This book of writings is gathered from newspaper columns Alan wrote for local publications, saunters he described in Whatcom Watch, and presentations he made on the Chuckanut Radio Hour. For each he has added a short explanation of the context and his reason for writing it, and in some cases information about subsequent events related to the piece. The introduction alone, which explains the book's title, is worth the price of admission.

e-Books:

Google Editions to Launch "Soon"

A

s our friends at Eagle Harbor Books like to say, "...the 'e' in e-book and e-reader does not stand for EEEEK!" In other words those of us at Village Books neither vilify nor fear e-books. You might be surprised to learn that Chuck and Dee, in addition to the stacks of printed books they read, also read e-books. The difficulty for us, and you our customers, has been that e-books have not been easily available from Village Books. You can currently get a limited number of e-books through our website—with a relatively "clunky" download interface. The selection is limited because many publishers have not made agreements with the digital warehouse that delivers e-books through our site.

However, as you may have read in the papers or online, Google Editions has already signed an agreement with the American Booksellers Association to provide e-books through our member websites...when Google launches, which they say will be before the end of the year. We will have nearly every e-book available in the e-pub format, which is "device-agnostic," meaning you can read it on nearly any computer or e-reader; Kindle does not currently support the e-pub format.

We know many folks are planning to buy e-readers soon or will give them as gifts this holiday season. If you're among them, we encourage you to buy one that will accept e-pub format (that's most readers — iPad, iPhone, Sony Reader, KOBO, NOOK, etc.). When Google Editions launches, it should be just as easy as going to our website, downloading the e-books to your computer (or directly to the device if it connects to an internet web browser), and syncing it to your e-reader. Village Books doesn't currently sell e-readers, and likely won't now that you'll be able to read our e-books on most every e-reader and computer.

We know e-books are a big transition for many, and many of us will never give up printed books. However, we've always been in the business of selling stories and ideas— not paper and cardboard. Happy reading...in whatever form that may take.

Now in its third year, Whatcom Reads is excited to bring Jim Lynch and his books, Border Songs and The Highest Tide to county readers. The intent of the program, which previously featured Sherman Alexie and Tobias Wolff, is to encourage all county residents to read the same book and create a county-wide conversation around the book.

The main book is Border Songs, chosen in part for its setting in and around Blaine. The Highest Tide was chosen as an adjunct book because of its suitability for young adults. Many activities will take place around the county (listed on WhatcomReads.org) before Jim Lynch returns in February.

He will visit a number of schools and libraries and on Thursday, February 24, will give two public presentations at Whatcom Community College's Syre Center—one at 1:30 in the afternoon and another at 7:30pm.

In addition to reading the book and encouraging others to do so (including your book group, if you belong to one) you may contribute financially to the program through the website. If you belong to a book group, the group might consider sponsoring a Book Club Kit for one of Jim Lynch's books, through Bellingham Public Library. Kits cost $125 and include ten books and guide materials.

Village Books will donate 10% of all sales of Jim Lynch's books from November through February to Whatcom Reads.

A Bookseller's Love Story

or thirteen years I've been stocking the shelves at The Book Cathedral, and it is my love story. You will probably not remember me by my name, but call me Ishmael. Or Tom Jones, or Tom Sawyer, or Elmer Gantry, or McTeague, or The Idiot, if you like. You may not remember me for my wispy hair, or brick-shaped loafers, nor for the wealth of cat hair clinging to the seat of my faded dockers. I distinguish myself by my love of books, and by never using the search function––I've no need of it.

Ask me who's between Allende and Sherwood Anderson, and I shall tell you without pause, Martin Amis, between Sarte and Schulberg, Saunders, and at the end of the line, you'll find Zusak, unless of course we're out, in which case you'll find Zafon. Blindfold me and spin me around in circles, then set me straight and run my fingers down the spines, and I'll tell you when we get to Proust, or the shorter novels of Melville. Ask me where to find Silas Wegg and I shall point you to Dickens. Ask me where is Oskar and I'll tell you he's banging his tin drum between Golding and Graves. And if it's Sancho Panza you're after, you'll find him chasing windmills with Quixote just to the left of Chaucer.

Through The Age of Innocence, The Age of Reason, to The Winter of Our Discontent. You'll meet The Sleeping Father, The Time Traveler's Wife, The Bigamist's Daughter, and Wittgenstein's Mistress. I'll lead you to the Shining City, beneath The Sheltering Sky, past Lions and Shadows, to The Dark Side of Guy de Maupassant––and if it pleases you, to the very Heart of Darkness itself. I will tell you The History of Love, The Brief History of the Dead. I will tell you The Secret Life of Bees. I'll tell you A Tale of Two Cities that will make All the Pretty Horses whiny and All the King's Men weep. Every once in a while a really "big" Northwest book is published. Annie Dillard's book The Living is one. Tim Egan's The Good Rain is another.

And of course Ivan Doig's memoir This House of Sky is in that circle. The publication of Jonathan Evision's new book, West of Here, in February will mark another milestone in the publication of "big" Northwest books.

WWU’s Children’s Literature Conference, now in its eigth year, is an event where teachers and librarians, readers and writers gather to celebrate and learn about children’s literature. Conference participants are afforded a unique opportunity to listen to, meet, and interact with the featured speakers. Tiffany is a teenager now, and the story allows her to handle some more grown-up situations than we saw in Wee Free Men or Hat full of Sky. She is the witch, and people count on her to do all the difficult unglamorous things they don't care to do themselves, equal parts nurse, teacher, and social worker. Even so, someone out there is stirring up evil against these industrious service workers. Lots of people are there to help (Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Rob Anybody) but some things a witch has to do for herself. Tiffany is an intelligent, determined, philosophical character. She is also very human and still a teen. This is a perfect book for a fantasy-loving middle or high school girl...just as soon as the adults will part with it long enough for her to read it. –Terri
