From New York Times bestsellers to old favorites, we now offer you one of the largest ebook collections available.

Through Google eBooks, we have nearly every ebook available in the e-pub format, which is "device-agnostic," meaning you can read it on nearly any computer or e-reader; Kindle does not currently support the e-pub format.

We know many folks are planning to buy e-readers soon. If you're among them, we encourage you to buy one that will accept e-pub format (that's most readers—iPad, iPhone, Android phone, Sony Reader, KOBO, NOOK, etc.). It is just as easy as going to our website, downloading the ebooks to your computer (or directly to some devices if they connect to an internet web browser), and syncing to your e-reader.

We know ebooks are a big transition for many, and many of us will never give up printed books. However, we've always been in the business of selling stories and ideas—not paper and cardboard. Happy reading...in whatever form that may take.

T.D. CURRAN TO HAVE IN-STORE PRESENCE The iPad has seemingly taken the world by storm, and now it's doing the same in Fairhaven. Beginning in February, T.D. Curran joined Village Books in a marketing partnership that includes a physical presence for the Apple Specialist in our store. You can test drive the famous Apple iPad, learn how to download and read Google eBooks from Village Books, and get your questions answered about the iPad and other Apple products.

Associates from T.D. Curran are available in the store and are also able to help you in downloading Google eBooks at their store at 4370 Guide Meridian (just north of Costco on the opposite side). T.D. Curran has been a full-range, locally owned and operated Apple sales and service company for twenty years, and Village Books is pleased and proud to join them in this partnership.

Building Community One Book at a Time

Dear Reader, For those of us in the bookstore, the early months of the year are a time when we get things cleaned up and begin planning for another year. The holiday season was better than last year, and all in all the year didn't come out too badly, considering current economic conditions and the state of the publishing and bookselling world. But, we have to do better. We have to serve you better, and we have to sell more books.

One study found that even the most avid independent bookstore fans were only making four of every ten book purchases at an independent bookstore. The rest were being purchased elsewhere. Customers often ask what they can do to ensure that Village Books stays around. You can take "The One Book Pledge"—make one more of your book purchases from Village Books and one less from Amazon or elsewhere. We're not asking you to buy more books, or to buy all of your books here. Just buy one more of your books at Village Books.

One of the most exciting changes in our business came late in the holiday season. On December 6th, we entered into a partnership with Google to bring you Google eBooks through our website—villagebooks.com. Now it's possible, if you own an iPad, iPhone, Sony Reader, NOOK, or any of a number of other eReaders (not the Kindle*) to purchase Google eBooks from Village Books and read them on these devices. And, we're pleased to welcome T.D. Curran and their iPads to the store.

A large percentage of all published eBooks are available from us at the same price you would buy them from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or any other vendor. Some titles may be priced a bit higher from us because vendors are choosing to sell these eBooks below cost to win market share and drive us, and other independents, out of business. This issue of the Chuckanut Reader is, like all editions, created for you, the Northwest's most avid readers. You will, we think, be interested to see what other readers in Whatcom County were reading this past year (page 41). We also think you'll be interested in reading Jim Bertolino's article about local poets (pages 25-26), as we all prepare, once again, to celebrate National Poetry Month in April.

You'll find, scattered throughout the Reader, our usual plethora of reviews from staff and previews from our buyers of books recently arrived and slated to be published in the next few months. We're also excited, as we hope you are, to announce the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Awards, and to provide information about events at Village Books and throughout Fairhaven.

We couldn't be more excited about the new owner of Book Fare Café. Charles Claassen is an accomplished chef who is combining his own unflagging commitment to local food with his distinctive culinary skills, honed, most recently, as the chef at North Cascades Institute's Environmental Learning Center. He offers his take on some cookbooks in the (now ongoing) feature "In The Kitchen with Charles," on page 21.

In these pages you'll also encounter what we believe were our top ten stories of 2010, including the celebration of VB's 30th anniversary and the publication of Chuck's book (It Takes A Village Books: Building Community, One Book at a Time) about the first 30 years of the store; the Chuckanut Radio Hour going to TV; the first full year of operation of our Espresso Book Machine; and half a dozen other stories.

We can never end "Dear Reader" without telling you how thankful and appreciative we are for you. We understand that it may be selfish for us to want to sustain our existence, and we know you are not ignorant of the fact that other businesses are fighting for your dollars with deep discounts. PLANT SALE

Getting well into its second decade of operation, the plant sale that the Fairhaven Neighbors stage each year has become a real community tradition. With more than a dozen vendors, the sale provides a wide variety of plant material from bedding plants to trees. But beyond the gardening aspects, the event also gives folks a chance to get together and raise some money for some very good causes. The plant sale will take place on Saturday, March 26th in the parking lot across Mill from the Fairhaven Village Green, adjacent to the South Bay Trail. Dirty Dan DAYS

Seafood Festival Daniel Jefferson Harris, known as “Dirty Dan”–presumably for his hygienic habits–was the founder of Fairhaven in 1883 and is celebrated each year with Dirty Dan Days.

This year’s festivities will begin Saturday, April 30th and will feature great food, fun contests, demonstrations, and other family-fun activities.

On Sunday, May 1st, there will be a rowing race on the waterfront, a Dirty Dan look-a-like & 1800's dress contest, and the ever-popular chowder cook-off. Both days will feature live music on the Green. The festivities are free to attend and take place primarily on the Fairhaven Village Green.

The Whatcom Literacy Council’s Annual Trivia Bee is happening on Friday, April 1st!

The Trivia Bee is the Literacy Council’s annual spring fund-raiser for know-it-alls, know-a-little-bits, and fun lovers of every stripe. Dozens of teams sponsored by local businesses––including Village Books’ team, The Village Idiots––converge at Bellingham High School and compete against each other while the witty remarks of host Dave Walker of KAFE Radio provoke laughter and competitive spirit. And, Jeopardy Champ Ken Jennings returns, fresh from matching wits with Watson, the IMB Computer.

The evening begins with a Silent Auction offering more than 200 great items. Bidding in the Silent Auction begins at 6pm and the Trivia Bee starts promptly at 7pm. You’ll have a great night of fun and you’ll be helping the WLC to help others. All proceeds go to support the Whatcom Literacy Council’s efforts to provide literacy tutoring to adults in Whatcom County.

"novel, n. a relatively long fictional prose narrative with a more or less complex plot or pattern of events, about actions, feelings, motives, etc. of a group of characters," Websters New World Dictionary. I'm not sure if The Lover's Dictionary counts as a novel, even though it says it's one. But, it has a beginning and an end; a narrator; the narrator's love interest(s); and lots of actions, feelings, and motives. Each "chapter" of this book is written like an entry in a dictionary, with one word setting the stage for each scene. Levithan's format is a "novelty," and is definitely worth reading. ––Christina

SCI FI Zero History

I started reading this because customers kept recommending it, and by chapter three, I was totally hooked. It is an exciting and convoluted story, with clues and information carefully seeded at an accelerating pace. The characters are unusual, very well-developed, and really interesting.

What is most important is that this is great social commentary and a unique (and perhaps canted) view of the world. In fact, this book was so great that I went back and read the other two in this series Pattern Recognition and Spook Country. I loved all three! ––Jonica

An Object of Beauty

One of the things that I love about reading Steve Martin's books is that in my head, as I'm reading, I hear his voice telling the story. The other, is how incredibly smart the writing is.

This one tackles the world of high art, complete with color reproductions throughout. It's a great story, very imaginative and smoothly written. How could it not be? It's Steve Martin, after all. ––Claire

This is written as a personal history leaving you with questions like 'was it worth it?' and 'do Jacob's efforts to be a good person, make him a good person?' Top Ten Stories for 2010 #10

Espresso Book Machine (aka—The Beast) Last October we reached the 1-year mark with our Espresso Book Machine, and what an experience it has been! More than 40 authors are printing their own books with us (a number that continues to grow!) and Chuckanut Editions, Village Books’s own publishing imprint, has nine books under its belt, with more on the way. With more than 5,000 books printed on the machine in the last year, we’re forging ahead with this new technology!

New Owner at Book Fare Café On December 1st, Charles Claassen, former chef at North Cascades Environmental Learning Center, and owner of Sprout Catering, took over ownership and management of Book Fare Café. Charles brings a strong commitment to the creative use of local, natural ingredients. He wowed folks at NCI and has already begun that process here.

Camp Village Books

In July the store organized a series of day camps that integrated outdoor activities, experiments, games, crafts, and books. The program attracted boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 13, and was so successful that an expanded program will be launched this summer. WWU and VB More Fully Connect

The store has long been connected with Western Washington University in many ways. However, in 2010 we strengthened that tie with WWU Connections, a program that brings WWU personnel to Village Books to present programs on a variety of interesting topics, such as map theft, terrorism, and Wikipedia. The second-Tuesday brown bags attracted overflow crowds and the extremely successful series continues.

Whatcom Literacy Council Names Village Books "First Friend"

At its annual Literacy Breakfast in November, the Whatcom Literacy Council honored Village Books with its annual "First Friend" award. Whatcom Reads in Third Year

While Village Books can only take credit for being one partner in a remarkable consortium of organizations that comprise Whatcom Reads, we nonetheless celebrate and take pride in the fact that 2010 was the third year of the county-wide reading program. Sherman Alexie led off in 2008/2009, we read Tobias Wolff in 2009/2010, and Jim Lynch read in February of this year. We are now excited to announce that Elizabeth George will be the Whatcom Reads author for 2011/2012!

Chuckanut Radio Hour Now on TV

The Chuckanut Radio Hour was launched on January 10, 2007, and has been regularly broadcast on Saturday and Sunday evenings on KMRE-FM 102.3.

With our August 2010 show, we also began recording for television, and now the show, in addition to being heard on radio, is broadcast on KVOS Channel 12 TV four times in the month following the live show.

n a per capita basis, I would guess there is more poetry activity in Bellingham than in New York City or San Francisco. It's like poetry in Bellingham has reached critical mass, and during April (National Poetry Month) there could be a quantum leap to Bellingham itself becoming a poem.

Besides the many self-published chapbooks by local poets, often printed at local copy shops, there are the Bellingham poets who have had their books published by presses around Washington: Luther Allen, Anita Boyle, Nancy Pagh, Richard Harris, Kevin Murphy, Suzanne Paola, Robert Lashley, Malcolm Kenyon and Anselm Parlatore (who had four volumes published in 2010, one of them a suite of 27 poems based on the outdoor sculpture collection at Western, titled Umbra: The Sculpture Poems). Of the poets whose recent books have been published outside Washington, five had their books come from Ohio publishers: Mary Cornish, Oliver de la Paz, Paul S. Piper, Steve Hood and James Bertolino.

Poets with books published in Kentucky are Elizabeth J. Colen (whose "Money For Sunsets" won a national competition) and Jeremy Voigt. Paul Fisher's "Rumors Of Shore" won the Blue Light Contest in California; Keith Moul, Florida; Carol Guess, Virginia; and John Morgan, Ireland (John is a well-known Alaska poet who bought a house in Bellingham).

Literary magazines that come out regularly in Bellingham include those at Western: The Bellingham Review, Jeopardy and Labyrinth. Whatcom Community College has The Kumquat Challenge contest anthology, as well as The Noisy Water Review. POEM A key organization is the Whatcom Poetry Series, a local non-profit, which consists of three programs: The Poet As Art, the Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest, and poetrynight. During 2010, The Poet As Art hosted two readings and workshops, with the readings held at the Lucia Douglas Gallery in Fairhaven and workshops out at Egress Studio on Noon Road. Lana Hechtman Ayers and Paul Fisher were the featured poets in June with opening poet Andy McBride, and workshop

by Lana; Peter Irwin and Lorraine Healy read in October with opening poet Judy Kleinberg, and workshop by Lorraine. The Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest supports a county-wide, all ages poetry contest each spring, followed by a public celebration where the winning poets are invited to read. Not only do the poets have their poems printed on placards designed by Anita Boyle, which are mounted on WTA buses, the Poetry Walk Award poets have their poems engraved and mounted along the sidewalk outside the Public Library downtown. A dramatic feature of last year‚'s program was the release of an anthology titled Poetry Walk: Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest, The First Five Years, edited by Nancy Canyon and Boyle. That volume was printed and bound by the amazing Espresso Book Machine at Village Books, as was Luther Allen's, The View From Lummi Island, which offers a full year of dated poems. Luther, along with Sue Erickson and Judy Kleinberg, are key organizers at Boynton, which has been hosting writing workshops. Those in February were taught

by Nancy Canyon, Jeremy Voigt (who served as a judge for the 2010 contest and recently joined the English faculty at Whatcom Community College), Lana Hechtman Ayers (who we consider an honorary Bellinghamster, and is the publisher of Boyle's What the Alder Told Me at MoonPath Press), and Rena Priest, our Lummi wunderkind who, after distinguishing herself as a student at Western, went off to the prestigious Sarah Lawrence College in New York to earn an MFA in Spring 2011

creative writing. She has since returned to Bellingham and is now a full-time faculty member at the Northwest Indian College.

Of the three programs that make up the Whatcom Poetry Series, the most active is poetrynight, which offers featured poets and an open mic every Monday evening at the Amadeus Project downtown. This year, poetrynight will be publishing an anthology at Radical Lunchbox Press, titled As Much As We've Put In: A poetrynight Anthology, edited by Melissa Queen, Boris Schleinkofer, Anna Wolff and Robert Huston. An on-going poetrynight program, which involves local poets visiting school classrooms, is known as PIPE: Poetry in Public Education, coordinated by Jessica Lohafer. Other venues in Bellingham include Open Mic with Laurel Leigh at Village Books, and Chuckanut Sandstone Writers Theatre open mic at the Firehouse Cafe. The Bellingham Haiku Group, founded by Seren Fargo, also meets regularly.

Stay alert for spring poetry events at Village Books (see the LitLive calendar on pages 51-54), the Gallery UFO and the Blue Horse Gallery Cafe, as well as Kevin Murphy's poetry on the Chuckanut Radio Hour. The first week in April the Chuckanut Sandstone Writers Theatre, in collaboration with Bellingham Repertory Dance, will offer Phrasings 2011 at the Firehouse.

Local GEOLOGY Book A Walk Through Geologic Time From Mt. Baker to Bellingham Bay

huckanut Editions, Village Books' own publishing imprint, has added another title to its catalog with the publication of A Walk Through Geologic Time From Mt. Baker to Bellingham Bay by WWU Professor Emeritus of Geology Don Easterbrook. The book has been labor of love for Easterbrook, telling a geologic story gathered over a lifetime of studying the sculpting of the landscape in the North Cascades and lowland of Whatcom County. The author, a fourth generation native of Whatcom County, has spent five decades studying the geology of this area, which constitutes not only one of the most scenic areas in the world but also one of the most fascinating geologically. The book includes amazing but little known facts about the evolution of Whatcom County's landscape and explains the origin of prominent natural features in the area.

Easterbrook lays out a geologic saga that began 1.8 billion years ago, and still continues. Among the fascinating facts about the local landscape: • For millions of years, the North Cascades were part of a marine volcanic arc, probably similar to the present-day Alaskan Aleutian chain.

• The Twin Sisters range formed in the Earth's mantle about 10 miles below the surface.

• Fifty million years ago, the Cascade Range didn't exist. Instead, the region was a vast floodplain populated, in part by flightless, 7-foot tall dinosaur birds and palm trees.

Swamps accumulated thick organic matter that eventually became coal.

• Two hundred linear miles of mined-out coal tunnels lie beneath Bellingham.

• Gold in quartz veins led to a gold rush around the turn of the 20th century.

• During the last Ice Age 17,000 years ago, a continental ice sheet 6,000 feet thick covered Bellingham and all but the highest North Cascade peaks.

• Huge landscape-altering floods resulted when the ice sheet melted back and vast ice-dammed lakes burst forth across the lowlands.

• Mt. Baker, an active volcano in our back yard, continues to steam after a long history of eruptions of lava and ash.

The book is illustrated with scenic photos that help the curious read and understand the geologic clues in the landscapes they see in the valleys, mountains, lakes and rivers of Whatcom County.

Emerald Bay

Northwest Ballet Theater's Emerald Bay is a romantic ballet set in Bellingham Bay and the Puget Sound region in 1885.

Not long after the Chinese Exclusion Act, Chinese immigrants were driven from the area. A modern variant on Shakespeare's classic tale Romeo and Juliet, Emerald Bay recounts the tragic love story of a Chinese Sea Captain Li Puo and his lover Julie O'Connor, a young woman of ScotsIrish ancestry.

Prominent historical figures in the ballet include Dirty Dan Harris, Goon Dip, and Mark Twain. The ballet also includes representative dancers and character actors from the region's diverse communities. It features original choreography by artistic director John Bishop, who recently directed Northwest Ballet's Aladdin and The Little Mermaid.

Emerald Bay will premiere at the University of Washington's Meany Hall in Seattle on May 15, McIntrye Hall in Mt. Vernon on June 4 & 5, and Mt. Baker Theatre in Bellingham on June 11, 12, & 13.

It's always fun for us to review what we sold the most of in the past year. Stieg Larsson's books were no big surprise with all the hoopla. However, when you look beyond the national bestsellers, you'll see a lot of Northwest authors, folks who participated in our Literature Live program, and all three of the Whatcom Reads participants to date. You'll also notice three books that were printed on our Espresso Book Machine. Two of them were our own Chuckanut Edition publications—Chuck's book at #8, and John Miles' Koma Kulshan at #23. A couple of the books made rapid rises to the list. Steve Siler's book at #30 didn't debut until October, and the first volume of Mark Twain's Autobiography didn't hit the shelves until November. April 4th, 7pm –The Anthologist by Nicholson Baker Paul Chowder is trying to write the introduction to a new anthology of rhyming verse, but he's having a hard time getting started. The result of his fitful struggles is The Anthologist, Nicholson Baker's brilliantly funny and exquisite love story about poetry.

May 2nd, 7pm –Too Close to the Falls: A Memoir by Catherine Gildiner The author shares her memories about growing up in the 1950s in Lewiston, New York, a small town near Niagara Falls, that are by turns hilarious and deeply moving. As a four-year old, she could read road maps, and made deliveries for her father's pharmacy, including sleeping pills to Marilyn Monroe while she was in town filming Niagara.

This is a wise-cracking collection of write-in-the-book activities immortalizing the triumphs of a misspent youth. Like some diaries, this journal comes with a handy pen mounted right on the front cover. Unlike some diaries, it also comes with a few fake fill-in-the-blank journal entries (for the benefit of unauthorized snoops). Other entries include the "how immature are you, really?" test, the "what you will barely grow up to be?" fortune teller, and the "what kind of goofball are you?" quiz. It's the ideal way to record all those things you should never have done in the first place, and how you'll do them better next time.

This book is fast-paced and best for ages 13 and older. If you're looking for a novel with romance, sacrifice, love, quests, and mystical creatures, this book is for you.
