the role of Peggy, one of Marianne's best friends, in BBC’s acclaimed and awarded series Normal People.

Next up, this talented beauty is ready to look back at the success of the show, embodying a new role in the third season of Sky’s biggest comedy Brassic.

India plays Sam, a new barmaid in the crow’s nest and possible love interest of Joe Gilgun’s character Vinny.

In conversation with Viewties, India shares more about her character’s premise in the show, along with her experience on set being the new income and explains why playing Sam has resonated to her.

V: I’m very excited to speak to you because I think you are a very talented actress and your art is very interesting to explore. Most of us recognize you from your character ‘’Peggy’’ in Normal People, how is it for an actress to step up from a success to continue her path in the industry and showing different aspects to build a versatile career?

Is this something actors struggle with or is it easy to achieve?

time at them these days as I’d like but yeah they’re probably my go to hobbies. And then music, and reading and being outside are also some of the things that keep me sane and happy.

India - Thank you so much! I definitely think there is an element of pressure we put on ourselves when something is well received, you want the projects that follow to be a progression of your previous work!

But I think Normal People was a particularly special job and I try to remember that versatility and skill is built over time so to just choose projects you love and do your very best and forget about the rest.

India - Aw I was just so delighted. I’m a huge fan of scripted comedy generally. It’s probably what I watch most regularly. And Brassic is just such a masterclass in writing and performances. I love how it’s chaotic and messy but still has this really big heart. Joe always says he hates seeing working class dramas that are all doom and gloom because that’s not how it is. And I think he’s so right, because in my experience, some of the most hysterical laughing happens alongside pretty bleak times in life when it feels so absurd that laughing is as much of a relief as tears.

V: How have you managed to balance your private life over the exposure that your career as an actor implies?

India - I’m really lucky to have amazing friends in my life who are crazy supportive and the same with my family, so I feel that having that kind of love around me makes the public commentary that comes with the job less scary. I know they're always there to laugh it off with me.

V: Outside of acting, do you have any other major interests or passions?

India - I love drawing and photography. I don’t spend as much...

V: Moving on to your bright present, how did it feel booking the role in Sky’s biggest comedy Brassic? Were you a fan of the show before?

V: How was meeting the cast?

As the new actor on set, does this mean your castmates support you and help you to adapt to the show’s dynamic or is it something you do individually?

India - On this one it was very much help from the castmates.

They really went above and beyond to make me feel part of the crew. It was obviously...

I definitely think there is an element of pressure we put on ourselves when something is well received. during lockdown so I felt giddy just to be in a room full of people, but the cast and crew are all very close and so much fun, so the fact they were so kind too really put me at ease.

V: What can you say about your character?

India - Sam is a new barmaid in the crows nest, which is sort of like the gangs HQ for their scheming. Vinnie (Joe’s character) and her strike up a friendship and a bit of a romance which stirs up his fear of trusting. I think she’s a match for him in a way in that she’s pretty forward and brazen but is surprised by the amount of love between the friends who like to think of themselves as capable criminals. I guess she’s like a new person to observe their endearing goofiness and try to earn the trust of people who are VERY loyal to each other.

Sam is pretty fearless, which I don’t think I am, but in my opinion it’s a kind of survival tool.

V: How did you approach the role and research it?

India - By binge watching the first two series and reading the scripts a load of times. But what was very clear is how rooted in realism the show actually is.

It’s a high energy comedy but it’s about real relationships so I felt it was most important that the connection between Vinnie and Sam was there and that’s very much down to the work that happens in the moment and having the space to play which, George - the director, always encouraged and made time for.

V: What was challenging about this role?

India - Working away during the pandemic. mostly I felt very lucky to be able to leave the house but obviously being the new kid in school and staying in a new city when socialising is very limited or not allowed was probably the biggest challenge. It was mostly pure joy so that’s the only challenge I can think of!

V: At some point, did you feel something about her resonated with you?

India - Yeah very much so. I think Sam is pretty fearless, which I don’t think I am, but in my opinion it’s a kind of survival tool. She doesn’t always say the right thing but she’s forward and hard working and having a lot of experience working in service jobs and being new in a city (when I moved to London), I can definitely relate to having to put on a thicker skin in those environments which I think Sam does.

V: Is there one scene in the series that was particularly taxing for you?

India - I can only think of running down this hill during one of the scenes in Vinnie's shack. It was a night shoot in winter and I was trying to look slick but I was slipping on leaves and stumbling down the hill, so my clumsiness gave my game away.

V: Last question, as my nationality is Argentinian, I’m curious to ask you if you have ever seen or experienced any type of art/culture from Argentina.

India - I’d love to go to Argentina!

The first thing that comes to mind is Evita. My Mum loves musical soundtracks and would always be listening to CDs of them in the house so even though Andrew Lloyd-Webber is a British writer, that first introduced me to Eva Perón's amazing story. Anya Taylor-Joy also comes to mind she’s part Argentine right? I think she’s incredible. But I'd love to visit and learn more about your gorgeous culture!

A s you might have already read from previous issues, Viewties has been

reviewing some of the short films from Candid Broads Productions which are currently running at different festivals. Sadly, this is going to be the last one to review, but I will be looking forward to writing my thoughts on the next ones coming soon.

Firstly, I wanted to say that each of the short films from Candid Broads Productions is very different, but all share a big purpose. This one I’m about to share with you is a story of unlikely friendships and the power of community to triumph over prejudice and oppression. It is a story we can all learn from.

Written by Ally Mackie and directed by Fabia Martin, 'KOTTI' is a comedy based on a true story that took place in the district of Kottbusser Tor, affectionately known as ‘KOTTI’, South Berlin. It follows the history of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rising inflation rates across Germany. This triggered significant cuts to affordable housing and the eviction of thousands of working-class Germans from their homes.

KOTTI the short film is set in a makeshift shed on the front line of the protest while two newly thrust-together neighbours, Belgin and Katya, anxiously wait for news of a police raid.

This is the only film where we don't see Oriane Pick as a character, she is the producer of this one and have carefully selected the perfect cast to embody these amazing characters – Emma Appleton as Katya and Anna Savva as Belgin. KOTTI states our individualities and shows how similar we can still be, as we are introduced to a conversation between two women who get ready to fight for justice.

Something else to say I’ve enjoyed about this film is the set. It was designed very perfectly and allows the audience to feel into the story and to get a vivid picture of what it was like. I am the type of person who finds inspiration in past stories, especially in history and the resilience of the very hard times that made a change to our present. KOTTI definitely represents this I’m saying.
