Friendly Visitors Aid in Times of Need By Heidi Fischer

So, you finally decide to do something about your knee pain. You’ve seen the orthopedist and your knee replacement surgery is scheduled for next week. Reality is beginning to sink in and you start thinking about how you’re going to manage on your own through this. That’s when a new neighbor mentions that she recently got a welcome basket from Dummerston Cares and information in it indicates they might be able to help. You give the Help Line (257-5800) a call and someone calls you back that evening. You are referred to Akara Draper, Rides Coordinator, and you arrange to get a ride to the hospital the day of your surgery and to be picked up and brought home when you are discharged. Heidi Fischer, Medical Equipment Loan Coordinator, meets you at your house, brings you a walker and sets up a shower chair for you in your bathroom. She lets you know that if you get to a point that you need a cane instead of the walker to just let her know and she will bring you one. Akara has arranged for volunteer drivers to get you to your physical therapy appointments for the next several weeks. Two weeks into your recovery you realize that you really need to get some groceries but you still aren’t allowed to drive. You call Akara to see if she can help in any way. That’s when you find out that indeed there are volunteers who can take you to the store and help you with your shopping or even pick up what you need if you’re not up to it yourself. Now you’re on the mend, eating well, getting to your physical therapy and follow-up appointments but you’re getting a little stir crazy at home alone, unable to get out on your own. That’s when Akara mentions Dummerston Cares’ Friendly Visitors program. Bill Johnson, coordinator of that program, arranges for a volunteer to visit you and you enjoy a few hours chatting and playing cards.

As he leaves, you’re already looking forward to his next visit. Your recovery is going pretty well but taking longer than you had hoped. Winter has settled in and started in earnest. After the first big snow you realize you need some help shoveling your path and driveway. Once again you learn that Dummerston Cares can help you with that and Bill Schmidt, Chores Corps Coordinator, arranges for some volunteers to come shovel you out. Finally, you are cleared to drive, you’re feeling stronger, and you don’t need the walker or shower chair any more. You call Heidi and she comes by and picks them up. At last, you are feeling like yourself again and your pain is gone. You head over to your

neighbor’s to thank her for mentioning that Dummerston Cares could help and to be sure she has the Help Line number because you heard she is about to have surgery and might need a little help herself. If you are in need of assistance please don’t hesitate to call Dummerston Cares’ Help Line (257-5800). Someone will get back to you within 24 hours of your call. Available assistance includes: rides to medical appointments locally and as far as Lebanon, NH and Boston; help with small household tasks or chores; loan of good quality used medical equipment; friendly visitors; emergency fuel assistance; and welcome baskets for new Dummerston residents. All services are free of charge.
