Salisbury and Riverview held events recognizing volunteers during Volunteer Week, held annually from April 19th to 26th; we share their stories and photos in this issue.

All of our regular columnists are featured this month – Jeff Melnychuk, Sophie Duplessis, Julie Solbak, Evelyn Williams and her maple-flavoured recipe in Evelyn’s Kitchen, and Kristen Lawson with Book Views.

We also introduce a new column on real estate from Shannon Auffrey.

appy Mothers’ Day! On May 10th most people will be celebrating with fresh flowers, handmade cards, and hopefully-only-slightly-burnt pancakes.

The following books provide a wide scope of perspectives on motherhood, from single moms to foster moms, found-family to intergenerational relationships, and everything else in between.

Yoko Ogawa’s novella The Housekeeper and The Professor was first published in 2003, then translated into English in 2009. Set in Japan in 1992, it’s told from the perspective of a young single mother whose sole mission is to make ends meet for herself

and her ten year old son, nicknamed Root.

One day she is assigned to work for the Professor, an aging mathematical genius with a memory only eighty minutes long because of a traumatic brain injury. At first it seems impossible to form a relationship with someone who can’t remember you, but the three characters find ways to bond over simple things like math homework and baseball stats.

As the mother cooks and cleans the Professor's tiny cottage, she begins to care for him in other ways: coaxing him outside to get a haircut, nursing him back to health when he has the flu. He becomes a grandfather figure to Root, who

has never had male family members before.

Learning to live in the present, like the Professor, ultimately brings mother and son closer together– they spend weeks hunting for the perfect baseball card, rather than thinking only of survival.

This unlikely trio demonstrates the power of found-family.

Canadian author Miriam Toews’ 2021 novel Fight Night is narrated by nineyear old Swiv, a smart and wilful tomboy caught between innocence and growing up too fast.

She lives in a small Toronto house with her pregnant mom, soon-to-be sibling, and frail yet formidable grandmother. After Swiv is expelled from school for fighting, Grandma takes on her education through classes like Fast Cooking, Math, Patience, and Ancient History (aka the year Grandma was born).

Toews explores the relationships between the three generations of women with candor and dark humour. Mom fights daily to keep the family afloat, while Grandma is determined to make the most of her remaining time, and Swiv finds adults alternately confusing, frustrating, and embarrassing.

Each nurtures and educates the others in turn as they navigate sharing a home and surviving in a relentless world. Of course there is conflict, but there is also an ever-present sense of love and loyalty. Swiv comes to learn that being King of the Castle is a lonely position, and that it's better to fight as a team. “[Mom] said the reason the Raptors are so good is because they’re collectively trying to win. She’d rather join a losing team than win a lonely fight.”

different kind of maternal relationship. When a young girl is sent away from her chaotic home to live on a quiet farm in rural Ireland, she blossoms under her foster parents’ care.

Small gestures like being tucked into bed and asked what she’d like for breakfast are new to her.

True warmth and affection radiate from her new caretakers, however the idyllic situation proves more fragile than it seems.

Cartoonist Alison Bechdel turns to psychoanalysis in an attempt to understand her and her mothers’ fraught relationship in her graphic novel Are You My Mother? (2012). Intelligent and complex, the unapologetic memoir reveals the ups and downs of the mother-daughter relationship, ultimately ending in a truce.

It’s no coincidence that this work shares a title with the classic kids book following a baby bird ask-

ing everyone he meets, "Are You My Mother?". Interestingly, it also regularly quotes Virginia Woolf and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, both of whom are referenced in Fight Night.

Anne Lamott shares a mother’s perspective in her hilarious, sometimes too-honest, memoir Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year (1993).

Warm and accessible, Lamott’s diary entries from her first year of motherhood share the confusion and frustration that come with becoming a parent, and the importance of having a support network to help you navigate this monumental change.

These five books demonstrate how unique and complex family relationships can be. They remind us that there's no single way to be a mother, and that everyone should remember to call their Mom.

Molasses Cookies with Maple Drizzle Ingredients: Cookies • 2 3/4 cups white or whole wheat flour • 1 tsp baking soda • 1 tsp ground ginger • 1/2 tsp nutmeg • 1/2 cup soft butter • 1/4 cup maple sugar (or 1/4 cup white sugar) • 3/4 cup brown sugar • 2 eggs • 1/3 cup molasses • 1 tsp vanilla

and sugars together and stir until light and fluffy. Whisk eggs, add and stir well. Then add the molasses and stir well.

4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, a little at a time. Mix well.

5. Put 2 tbsp of flour in a small bowl.

6. With a spoon scoop approximately one tbsp of cookie dough at a time into the palm of your hand, then top with a dusting of flour. With two hands roll into a dough ball.

7. Place the dough balls approximately 1 inch apart on baking sheet.

Let the drizzle set until it is firm.

This usually takes an hour or two.

May’s cool trick? Sunburned goose bumps

M

ay isn’t a superstar like March and April are for their massive, almost-festive post-winter daylight turnarounds, but it is the month that famously requires humans to wear a toque and sunscreen all on the same day, maybe even at the same time.

While warm weather hasn’t exactly been banging down our doors — daytime highs have barely cracked into the double digits — the Sun is just busy doing its own thing.

On May 1, it was high in the sky at 59.1 degrees elevation at solar noon, just 8.2 degrees below the apex at the summer solstice in June in about six weeks.

April’s elevation began

at 48.6 degrees. By May 1, the earth tilted 10.5 more degrees toward the sun — which meant the sun appeared 10.5 degrees higher in the sky at solar noon — but May adds only about seven more degrees.

That’s because as the June 21 summer solstice (the first day of summer and the day with the most light) approaches, the daily gains in elevation and daylight slowly reduce to zero.

The ball is about to drop At that point, there

will be a period of about 10 days when the sun’s elevation and daylight change only slightly as we then begin to — gasp — lose daylight.

Think of it like a basketball being thrown at a hoop.

At the very top of the ball’s arc, it appears to hang for a split second as it decelerates, then stops traveling upward and begins to fall.

Yes, that’s our daylight stall at the solstice, and it hardly seems fair that we have so much daylight now when seasonal temperature

increases lag so far behind.

For example, the total daylight on May 1 of 14 hours and 22 minutes matches Aug. 16 (as daylight decreases after the solstice), but the daytime high on May 1 was 12C and last year on Aug. 16 was 27C. But summer will begin soon, so we have that to look forward to as well as the still-significant daylight gains between now and then.

The 6:05 a.m. sunrise on May 1 backs up to 5:32 a.m. by the end of the month, but

most exciting, May notches the first 9 p.m. sunset of the year, on May 29. The month ends with a 9:02 p.m. sunset, a gain of 35 minutes from the 8:27 p.m. sunset on May 1. For comparison, April gained 39 minutes at sunset and March gained 41 minutes, so the daily gains are tapering.

Daily gains reducing to zero And by the end of May, the daily gains will have dropped sharply, but they are still gains. We began the month gaining 2 minutes

and 36 seconds a day, and it will end with 1 minute and 32 seconds a day. And all of June gains only 12 minutes at sunset, reaching the latest sunset time of the year of 9:14 p.m., at the solstice with sun’s highest elevation of 67.3 degrees.

On that day, the total sun-up time is 15 hours and 46 minutes, and the actual time for night — total darkness — is just 2 hours and 45 minutes. Wait, what? That should add up to 24 hours, but I’ll explain next time why it’s not even close.

Volunteer Awards Create Awareness of Opportunities

unicipalities across the country have been jumping on the National Volunteer Week bandwagon, and Salisbury is no exception.

Their Annual Volunteer Awards Banquet launched in 2023 with

five categories: Volunteer of the Year, Youth Volunteer of the Year (age 17 and under), Organization of the Year, Decade of Dedication, and Firefighter of the Year. Young Adult Volunteer of the Year (ages 18–30) was added in 2025.

“There has been more awareness of opportunities since the

awards started,” said Marni Golemba, Recreation and Wellness Coordinator. “We had more than double the nominations this year compared with last year.”

Nominations are open to anyone who generously gives their time, energy, and ideas to the community, and whose service improves the quality of life in Salisbury.

Golemba reported that Volunteer of the Year received the most nominations, followed by Youth Volunteer. “It’s really helpful

for students to be nominated because they can put that on their university applications.”

The 4th Annual Volunteer Awards Banquet took place at the Canadian Legion on April 23. Salisbury Regional School senior Lily Agate emceed, while other SRS students served meals and cleaned up alongside the Legion members. All of the volunteers received bee-themed gifts sourced from the local Farmers Market.

Riverview Youth Wrestlers Compete in National Championships

T

hree Riverview athletes represented the Mountaintop Wrestling Club at Wrestling Canada’s 2026 National Championships in Grande Prairie, Alberta, held between April 24th to 26th.

The club formed in 2008, says head coach Jeff Jones, for athletes in Riverview, Dieppe, Moncton and surrounding areas.

“These athletes have access to school wrestling teams, but they also practice two or three times a week with our Mountaintop club in order to perfect their technique and continue to improve.

“We have athletes from nine years of age and up.”

Jones has an extensive background in the sport.

He started wrestling in Grade Nine at Magnetic Hill School and then wrestled for three years at Harrison Trimble High School. “I went to Mount Allison University and wrestled there for four years and also coached Tantramar High School the years that I was at Mount Allison, and a kid’s program.

“I lived in Saint John for two years. When I returned I coached Magnetic Hill’s team and then coached at Harrison Trimble for many years.

I coached at Moncton High and Riverview High School and McNaughton High School.

“The beauty of the Mountaintop Club athletes is that we have a number of different athletes from a number of different schools that

come together once or twice a week and we have privilege of helping all of these kids get better.

“That was one of the reasons why I formed Mountaintop, to give these kids a little boost with that extra coaching.”

Jones says “kids may grow up play wrestling, and they have fun doing it. Sometimes they discover us when they are younger through their middle schools or adventure programs.

Others may play other sports and not discover us until later. When they do discover us, they say, ‘oh, that’s a lot of fun.’

“We teach self defence and nutrition and how to be a good person.

“Wrestling is unique in that it is a combination of strength and skill.

Our logo says “Strength, Determination, and Patience.’ Wrestling is like chess. If you have two competitors who are very close in strength, technique, and fitness, then it is a mind game that requires strategy.”

The Mountaintop club hosts both male and female wrestlers. Jones adds that “women’s wrestling started to pick up in Canada in the 1990s and Canada has been very successful on the world and Olympic stage in women’s wrestling.”

Jones has coached at the Canada Games on four occasions; his fellow coaches have coached at the Canada Games level as well.

Says Tanner, “I just really like how hard it is. It keeps me in good physical shape and makes me work hard. I like everything about it, and I like to win. Being strong can only take you so far, you need good

technique.”

Adds Elizabeth, “I started wrestling eight years ago when I was offered a spot and my dad agreed to start coaching.

I was allowed to enter the program a year early if he agreed to coach, because he had to be on the mat

with me for me to be able to wrestle.

“I’ve just stuck with it.

For me, it is really enjoyable. You have to be able to think under pressure.

You have to keep your head in the game.”

Elizabeth’s sister Samantha says she got in-

volved through “watching my sister and thinking ‘I want to give this a try.’ It keeps me active.”

Inspiring Unity Through Music

n August of 2025, khorus gave its inaugural performance.

Khorus Choeur gai / Moncton Gay Chorus is a choir of gay men and allies with the vision to “inspire unity through music” and a mission to “celebrate community by having fun through fellowship and song.”

Choir director Eric Johnson notes that the choral group performs music from both English and French repertoires and is intended to be “fun, rainbow and diversity positive, and a celebration of US (as in khorUS).”

Khorus rehearses on Wednesday evenings at St. Paul’s United Church on Cleveland Avenue in Riverview.

The impetus for khorus came from a realization that New Brunswick was one of the few provinces without a Gay Men’s Chor-

us. Says the chorus in a release, “it was at a ‘5 a 7’ during the River of Pride event in August of 2024 that one of the organizers, Jim Kinnie, introduced a new steering committee.”

That group laid the foundation for what became khorus Choeur gai / Moncton Gay Chorus.

St. Paul’s United Church provides the rehearsal space free of charge and,

says Johnson, “welcomes the idea of hosting us.”

Dan Babineau has also been a key organizer and designed the chorus’s logo.

New members are welcome, with no previous choral experience required.

The chorus will perform a program entitled “This Is Me” at St. Paul’s on June 7th at 2 p.m. More information can be found on the group’s Facebook page.

Q&A with

JOHN SAVAGE S

ummer camp has long been a part of the experience of growing up in our corner of the world. We spoke with Camp Centennial Director John Savage about the value of the camp experience for young people. Camp Centennial draws campers from across our region and, sometimes, beyond.

Q: What does a typical week at camp look like?

There are of course different age groups and different programs, but the fundamental idea is simple – the kids are spending their day outside. The activities range from campfires and canoeing to rock climbing to outdoor cooking, singing, field games, and forest games – all those things that you think of when you close your eyes and picture a summer camp. One of the philosophies that we discuss with staff during training is that all of those things that we spend time learning and doing, like canoe paddle strokes, are not the goal.

They are the conduit through which we teach valuable things like curiosity, and fostering independence, and what independence looks like for a five year old who is coming to day camp for the first time, and how that differs from what independence looks like for our leadership campers who are fifteen

and sixteen. It looks different again for our counsellors. But, this whole program focuses on values, going back to Owen Fraser (editor’s note – Owen Fraser was a teacher at Harrison Trimble High School and long-time advocate of outdoor activity) when he established these programs. Society is figuring out how to teach and encourage young people without causing harm; camps provide this amazing space where a seventeen year old can be given a leadership opportunity to succeed.

Q: How does that work for counsellors and campers alike?

There is a sense in which camps have not changed much in fifty or one hundred years. We see an appreciation for that consistency of tradition. We have never had cell phones for the kids, or access to technology; there is a growing appreciation for the simpli-

city in which you can approach a day, for the value of play. We are in a day and age where that is appreciated emotionally but it is also beginning to be appreciated academically as we come to understand the value of the types of experiences young people have at camp. Some of those old expressions, like “it takes a village to raise a child,” remind us of how people come together to make this experience. We try to set things up so that, for example, if that day campers are excited about turtles, the counsellor’s response will be “let’s go look at turtles,” more than, “today we have to go look at turtles.” Campers come back pumped about seeing turtles and counsellors embody that moment.

Q: Where do the campers come from?

Most campers come from across southeastern New Brunswick, but for years there was a family that came from the Netherlands. They would come here to visit family, and their kid came to camp because he developed connections here. As Greater Moncton has become more diverse, we would like to continue to make camp a tradition that we can invite everyone into, including new Canadians. We have a responsibility to find those connections.

Q: This is described as a screen generation, and yet summer camps are going strong. Why do you think that is?

There is a concern that young people are forgetting how to play.

If you give young people the environment to be themselves, we can get there very quickly. It is not, “put your phones away,” it is that there are not any phones to start with. It is not, “today we will play,” it’s, “hey, let’s play.” It becomes very natural for young people to find joy, to giggle and laugh and make connections. Those are not things that young people

Fifth annual Gun Show will benefit Petitcodiac and area charities

T

he fifth annual Gun Show, to be held on Saturday, May 9th at the Westmorland County Agricultural Fair Grounds in Petitcodiac from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will benefit three local charities, says organizer Mike Lesperance.

“One hundred percent of monies raised goes to the charities, the Petitcodiac Support People of Today (SPOT) Food Bank, the 4H Club, and the Petitcodiac Fair Grounds.

“There will be a full canteen featuring the same great menu as the previous four gun shows and also

draws for a rifle, Grand in the Hand and 50/50.”

The SPOT Food Bank will be onsite with food hampers to accept donations of non-perishable food items. 4H Club and Fair Ground representatives will assist with the Canteen and ticket sales.

Lesperance notes that all federal and local firearm laws and ordinances must be obeyed. Admission is $5.00 for adults; children under the age of 14 are admitted free with adult supervision.

Backyard Hens Group Seeks Public, Candidate Input T

he Riverview Backyard Hens group recently undertook a survey of public attitudes toward backyard hens inside town limits, says group representative Kevin Beck, along with soliciting the opinions of Riverview’s municipal candidates for councillor in the May 11th elections.

The survey was distributed online via the Ask Riverview group on Facebook, as well as through members of the Riverview Backyard Hens group and their respective networks.

“We said, ‘share with

everyone you know,’ because we needed to have reliable data to go on, including people who had negative opinions. One hundred and seventy-one responses were received.

“We asked for residency confirmation, to ensure that respondents live in the town of Riverview. Of the one hundred and seventy-one respondents, only two did not live in Riverview.”

Respondents were asked if they were in favour of, opposed to, or did not have an opinion on allowing backyard hens within the town.

Respondents were also queried about such matters as a preferred number of hens per household and what regulations those in favour would like to see.

Beck says sixty-seven percent of respondents were in favour of a bylaw permitting backyard hens within town limits, with twenty-eight percent opposed and five percent unsure. “As for the number of hens that should be permitted, those in favour most commonly chose four, and all favoured regulations,” adds Beck.

“One of the biggest

misconceptions is that a backyard hens program would be unregulated.

But residents were very clear that they want strict rules around animal care, noise, and property boundaries.

“The most common regulations that people said they want were no roosters, enclosed coops and runs, setbacks from property lines, limits on noise, respect for animal welfare, and licensing or regulation.

“The benefits most often mentioned were local food sustainability, household self-reliance, educational values for families, environmental

benefits, and responsible small-scale living.”

On the other side of the story, Beck says those respondents who were opposed to the idea of backyard hens “were concerned about noise, potentially lowered property values, concerns about how the situation would be managed if homeowners did not take care of their hens, and a general sense that some residents do not want hens in a neighbouring yard.

“Some respondents expressed concern that a bylaw allowing backyard hens could lead to farm livestock,

like sheep, being allowed in suburban yards.”

Beck notes that the Riverview Backyard Hens group’s proposal to the new council, that will be elected on May 11th, will be “specific to hens” and supportive of the need for regulation and enforcement.

The group has also sent a letter to every Riverview candidate running for a position as councillor in the May 11th municipal election to gauge support. The results are updated regularly on the group’s Facebook page as candidates respond.

Real Estate is Enjoying a Renaissance along the Petitcodiac River

here are five real estate cycles in communities: growth, which features new development; stability, when growth plateaus; decline, when homes start to age and wear starts to show; accelerating decline when homes show their age and are in need of a facelift; and finally renewal, when a rebirth of new home construction combines with the restoration and rejuvenation of older housing stock.

For a long time, the drive from Salisbury down to the coast felt like it was holding its breath in the stability phase. But lately, that breath has been released into a whirlwind of activity. We are witnessing a rare, high-energy collision of growth and renewal

happening simultaneously along this entire corridor.

In Salisbury, the grit and resilience of the community is on full display.

To me, the most heartening example of renewal is the rebuilding of the Save Easy. After the devastating fire last year, seeing that steel go back up and the structure take shape again symbolizes a village that refuses to stay down.

When you couple that with the new net-zeroready Fire Rescue Station and the rush of new residential lots hitting the market, Salisbury is effectively hitting the reset button and moving into a vibrant growth phase.

As you move through Upper and Lower Coverdale, you see renewal taking a more personal shape.

Older, sprawling properties that were beginning to

slide into a period of decline are being snatched up by a new generation. These younger buyers are bringing fresh paint, modern energy, and young families back to the river, turning "fixer-uppers" back into the gems of the county.

Meanwhile, Riverview is in a state of pure, record-breaking growth. With the massive Bridgedale Boulevard extension and the skyline of cranes over the developments on Pine Glen Road, the town is transforming before our eyes. It has officially outgrown its old reputation; Riverview is no longer just a bedroom community, but a destination in its own right.

Further down the 114 in Hillsborough and all the way to Alma, the renewal is driven by a mix of history and world-class tourism.

his month marks 50 years since the Riverview Arts Council was formed in May 1976. Despite a brief moment during COVID when they thought they might have to shut down, the RAC is still going strong and gaining momentum.

The council was founded by Riverview’s first female councillor Flora Dell.

In a 2003 speech, she reminisced, “I was the Chairperson of the cultural sub-committee of the Councils’ Recreation and Cultural Services Committee – I think they felt that was where I would do the least harm – little did they know…”

SPRING CLEAN YOUR MOVEMENT HABITS

T

here’s something about this time of year that makes us want to refresh everything. The closets, the pantry, the front porch.

But what about your body?

Spring is the perfect time to take an honest look at how much you’ve been moving, or not moving, and hit the reset button. And if you’re somewhere in the middle of life, juggling aging parents, nearly-independent kids who still need you, and everything in between, this message is especially for you.

Here’s the truth: you don’t need a dramatic fitness overhaul. You don’t need to commit to an hour at the gym every day.

What you need is to move more consistently than you did last winter, and that bar is probably not as high as you think.

Research is very clear that regular, moderate movement is one of the strongest predictors of how well we age. Not how hard we exercise, but how consistently we move. Walking, stretching, getting up from the couch, carrying groceries,

tending the garden. It all counts. And it all adds up.

That said, there is one thing worth making time for no matter what season it is: lifting weights. I know that might not be what you want to hear, but after 40 we start losing muscle mass every single year unless we do something about it.

Strength training, even just two days a week, is one of the most important things you can do for your long term health, your bone density, your balance, and your ability to keep doing the things you love as you get older.

If the weather isn’t cooperating or outdoor activity just isn’t in the cards right now, the gym is exactly where you should be.

This time of year gives us a natural nudge. The days are longer. The air smells better. There’s actual reason to go outside.

Use that. Take the long way to the mailbox. Do a few squats while the kettle boils. Park farther away. These aren’t silly suggestions. They are the building blocks of a body that will carry you

through the next few decades with strength and independence.

If you’re caring for an aging parent right now, you are watching up close what happens when movement gets lost over time.

Stiffness, balance issues, fatigue, loss of confidence.

So much of that is preventable, or at least delayable, with consistent activity.

You have the chance right now to write a different story for yourself.

And if your kids are just launching into adulthood, you are likely feeling the shift of having a little more time and a little less chaos. That’s your window. Use it.

Spring doesn’t ask you to be perfect. It just asks you to start again.

So dust off the sneakers, open the back door, and if you haven’t picked up something heavy in a while, come on in. We’d love to help with that too.

Q&A with Chief Electoral Officer

E

lection day is coming up fast in New Brunswick. Chief Electoral Officer Kimberly Poffenroth shares how she and her staff at Elections New Brunswick strive to ensure an independent and accessible election while protecting voter data and limiting misinformation.

Q: What steps are you and Elections NB taking to protect the municipal elections from misinformation?

We are combating misinformation by educating the public ahead of time; when they hear information that they are not sure is correct they will be able to proactively correct that misunderstanding themselves.

We have a number of campaigns. Hopefully you and your readers have seen the first one on television, it is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek campaign encouraging people not to believe everything they see online.

We sent Your Vote Matters flyers to every household in NB, with links to sites on where to find good sources and how to verify information. We keep a repository of all of our election ads on our website so people can check if what they see is from Elections New Brunswick.

Our website has lists of all the candidates for all of the contests in the province. Each candidate provides us with a website, email address or phone number where voters can reach out to them.

We have also been developing a suite of educational videos on the electoral process; they cover everything from the qualifications to vote, the voting process, and how we secure results.

Q: What about protecting voters' information, ensuring there is no misuse or fraud?

Our voters list information is all behind the Government of NB firewall.

People think we have a huge amount of data on them; we just have name, address, and date of birth, so we can ensure they are eligible to vote.

All candidates are entitled to receive the list of electors for the contest in which they are participating. They have to sign a declaration that they understand that they have to keep that information private and can only use it for election purposes, and that they have to destroy the information after they are done.

Q: Does election technology have an effect on public trust?

We use Poll Pad, a software application that uses an iPad, for voter strike-off and synchronizing. When a voter goes in to vote, they are struck off, and that is communicated to all the digital voter lists across the province. Somebody cannot go into another poll or returning office and vote--the minute they are struck off in that polling station, they are struck off everywhere.

One of the misconceptions people have is that somehow the tabulation machines can be hacked.

The tabulation machines are not attached to the Internet in any way while they are in a polling location. To ensure the security of results, we close the machine and print off a digital tape. It is only after we have the printout that the machine is connected to a modem. The next day our returning officers compare to make sure that the digital results are the same as the printed results.

We always have the paper ballots as a backup.

It is important to have that paper ballot--it is easy to do an audit trail.

We do some hand-counted ballots in every election, to ensure that second level of verification, in addition to testing every machine before it leaves the Elections NB warehouse.

Q: On the subject of independent election processes, what steps are you taking to ensure public trust?

Putting the hiring of returning officers in the hands of the Chief Electoral Officer, rather than the Cabinet, was a very important piece in enhancing the reputation of municipal elections in 2022 and assuring the public that we are non-partisan.

In provincial elections, we have to ask the political parties for lists of names for poll workers and some of the positions within our returning office. That obligation to solicit names from political parties colours in some people's view that these are political appointments, which they are not, and they should not be.

Q: Elections NB has the authority to adapt voting procedures in emergencies.

Why is that necessary?

Those provisions were implemented in the Municipal Elections Act during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, during that period we could not send staff into nursing homes and special care homes with vulnerable individuals. We modified the mail-in balloting procedure to accommodate that.

Elections have occurred in BC, Alberta and the Northwest Territories during wildfire season, and they have had to make adaptations where people were permitted to vote while they were evacuated. In PEI they had a massive snowstorm and had to delay election day because people were snowed in.

I would like to see that flexibility implemented in the Provincial Elections Act, it is an important risk management tool to en-

sure that we are not trying to conduct an election in circumstances where it is not safe.

Q: This is the first municipal election since the major restructuring in 2022. Are people more comfortable with the changes now?

How will that affect voter participation?

It is hard to say what it is going to be like--this year will set the benchmark for what impact the amalgamations have on voter turnout. The number of New Brunswickers who have the ability to vote for mayor and council is much higher this time than it would have been the last time we had a province-wide event.

Even those who could vote in 2022 may not have been as familiar with the new structures, on whether they were in or out, or they did not see the significance.

Now that they have been part of these new municipalities for 3 years and understand the decision-making that these local governments have, I am hoping they want to have a voice.

Q: What steps do you take to make sure that voting is accessible for demographics like rural voters, and first-time voters?

We are spending far more money on our communications for this election than we have in the past. We are even doing ads in movie theaters. It would be very difficult for someone not to know there is a local government election going on.

We have mail-in voting available for those that might have difficulty getting to a polling location.

We have used college and university administrations to send out blast emails to students about where and

how they can vote.

We have spoken with administrators at nursing homes and special care homes about the processes we have in place to ensure their residents can vote.

Local returning officers can set up polls within those facilities or arrange individual visits for people who are unable to leave their home due to illness or an incapacity.

In NB, you can vote at any returning office in the province, which have far more flexible hours than polling stations, from April 20 till the close of polls on Election Day. You do not have to go into your own returning office; you can go into any one in the province and vote for your local candidate.

Q: Is there anything else that you want to share?

We have tools for accessibility for our voters who might encounter barriers to voting, particularly allowing people with certain disabilities who may not have been able to vote independently in the past.

At our returning office, we have an audio vote system…the voter listens to the contest and the candidates and then makes their selection with a tool. People who are visually impaired use a braille controller. If the individual happens to be quadriplegic, we have a sip and puff tool. There is also a paddle for those who have barriers with fine motor skills, they can use it with their hands or their feet. It allows them to vote independently without re-

quiring anyone to mark the ballot for them.

A few elections ago, in the Moncton area, a young gentleman in his 30s went in and used the audio vote.

He cried because it was the first time he was able to vote independently and keep his vote secret. It is such an important part of the democratic process.

It is only available in returning offices because of the equipment that is involved. People can still have a friend or family member, or an election worker, help them mark their ballot if they want to, but if not being able to have their vote stay secret has held them back from voting in the past, this tool is available.

That is something of which we are really proud.

We have an election accessibility committee that has representatives from a number of different groups that may experience barriers to voting.

Not just physical or mental disabilities, but linguistic or socioeconomic barriers.

We have developed forms that can be filled out by a service organization to provide individuals who are unhoused or living rough with an address so that they can vote.

We want to do everything we can to reduce barriers that people encounter voting in New Brunswick.

The message I would like people to receive is: It is not complicated, it does not take a lot of time, because of all the voting options we have available. It is hard to say you did not have enough time to vote.

ulture in the future should be defined by inclusion, adaptability, and genuine human connection. As societies become more interconnected through technology, culture must move beyond rigid traditions and embrace diversity in all its forms—race, identity, language, and ways of thinking.

Instead of expecting people to fit into one “norm,” future culture should celebrate differences as strengths that drive creativity and innovation. At the same time, culture should prioritize mental well-being and balance. Constant productivity and comparison, often fueled by social media, can harm individuals. A healthier culture would value rest, self-expres-

sion, and community support just as much as achievement.

People should feel safe being themselves without fear of judgment or exclusion. Technology will continue to shape culture, but it should be used intentionally. Rather than replacing real-life interaction, it should enhance connection, making it easier to learn about others and build empathy across

distances. Finally, future culture should be rooted in responsibility—toward each other and the planet. Sustainability, kindness, and accountability should guide decisions at both individual and societal levels. A strong culture of the future isn’t just about progress; it’s about creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to belong and thrive.

FIRST PERSON - MIKE HUNTER

R

iverview native Mike Hunter is the first to admit that his forthcoming visit is long overdue.

His latest book of fiction, on the other hand, is hot off the press.

Ideas for Sale, a novella, is Mike’s third self-published work, and will be launched at Riverview Middle School in June.

The Hunter family lived in Riverview for about twenty years, until parents Laurie and Pat moved to Ottawa in 1972, taking their youngest daughter, Janet, with them.

Siblings Mike and Kathy stayed in the area. Kathy raised her family here; Mike moved away a year or two after their parents.

Having lived and worked in numerous places in Canada (in six different provinces) and at a variety of vocations, Mike ended up in Cape Breton, and at Cape Breton University, where he was

Editor-in-Chief of CBU Press, retiring in 2017. He holds a Master’s degree in Communication and Culture from York and Ryerson (now Toronto Metropolitan) universities.

In retirement, he continued to freelance as an editor while “finally” trying his hand at writing fiction.

Ideas for Sale, is Hunter’s third book centred in a fictional village called The Landing.

In a village much too small for big ideas, the main character (named Sterling Macaulay III) is The Landing’s best-known (and only) entrepreneur.

Like many dreamers before him, Sterling tries his luck in Toronto, only to learn the hard way that the centre of the universe is a lot closer to Cape Breton than he thought.

“Writing fiction was a bit of a leap for me, from editing and publishing primarily non-fiction and academic work by others.

I started out in retirement

to write an as-yet unfinished novel, and an interesting thing happened to my thought process as I tried to get better at writing dialogue.

I really got caught up in the personalities of the characters I was practicing with and just kept on going in order to bring them to life.

Many of my characters are what is known as composite.

From memory and experience, you take a little of this person or event or history, and you add a little of that.

While no reference is made to anyone in particular, lots of people, places and things are stirred into the ‘plot pot’ to make it work.

Riverview figured more prominently in my life experiences, and thus my writing, than I previously realized, so I wanted to bring some stories back to whence they partially came.

In the Fall of 2024, my former classmates from Riverview High School organized a class

reunion. It was actually a fiftyyear reunion of the class of 1972 delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers decided to have the party anyway, just a couple of years late.

I was delighted to hear about the reunion and had planned to attend but came down with a terrible cold and had to cancel.

So, this trip is two years late for the two-years late fifty-years reunion!

Riverview was definitely part of my make-up, no matter the time and travels between then and now. I look forward to hearing, learning and sharing, and to let people know that I cherish the memories.

The beauty of the novella as a format is its brevity. Fiction that is longer than a short story but shorter than a novel.

Limiting the cast of characters allows deeper character development than the former without the complexity and structure of a full novel.

A novel is next.”

Hunter is looking forward to seeing old friends, former classmates and teachers still in the area, and to hearing about their lives over the intervening years.

Summer Nights Music Festival Starts and Ends with Family

hat began as a one-time fundraiser concert has ballooned into a fully-fledged production company bringing live music to Riverview.

In June 2024, Matt’s nephew, Levi, suffered a severe diving accident and became paralyzed.

As a paramedic, Matt certainly understands how difficult a medical emergency can be.

Within weeks, with the help of Scott Burgess, he had organized a charity concert to support Levi and his family.

IronFest took place July 26 at the Holy Whale, headlined by PEI country artist Ben Chase.

“Levi identified as Iron Man during his recovery,” Matt shared. “My brother, Levi’s dad, was able to sing to him via FaceTime from the stage. It definitely helped with the healing process.”

The concert was so well received that Matt decided to do it again. In 2025 he officially established Seventy3 Productions, named for the year Riverview was founded.

Labrador City already hosts an annual summer IronFest, plus the name felt too tied to a single genre. The festival received a new name: Summer Nights.

“What I remembered from the year before was how great the atmosphere was on a summer night, with the sun setting behind the stage.

Summer Nights felt like something everyone could relate to.”

Scott handled the site logistics for that second show while Matt managed the artists and production

side. Fellow paramedic Rachel Nevers volunteered to help and quickly became a pivotal partner in the growing company.

Seventy3 Productions now regularly presents local and regional artists at the Holy Whale and other venues across NB, including the popular John Prine Tribute in April.

Their mission is to build community and help grow a strong, local music scene. As more people are reaching out to them to produce events, they are still figuring out what exactly the company is.

“What I really want to create is an experience.

The challenge is figuring out how to create something the community feels part of, something they take pride in.”

Part of Seventy3’s approach is to make the artists’ experience just as important as the audiences’.

“Backstage is really fun.

My friend cooks a brisket that is becoming a bit of a thing. We have had people from Nashville say it was better than barbecue down there!”

The 2026 Summer Night Music Festival is taking place at the Holy Whale on July 24 & 25, with an iconic Canadian rock theme. After recent updates to the concert site, Matt estimates the space can hold 3-4x the previous year’s capacity.

Friday night features headliner Big Sugar, along with The Motorleague, Chris Colepaugh and the Cosmic Crew, and Pat Gillespie and his band.

Saturday is headlined

by Sloan, with The Monoxides, The Orchids, and The Magnetic Hills, the band Matt and his brother play in.

“Because this is tied to Levi, it means a lot to him and to my brother to have that outlet and keep that connection.”

While charity remains the focus, the festival took some losses last year. This year they plan to divide the revenue into thirds: one to invest back into the company, one to compensate for their work, and one to go to charity.

“Because we are grow-

ing, we want to be careful not to over-promise and under-deliver. Ultimately, we want to get to a place where the festival can reliably give back,” Matt explained.

He went on to share his gratitude for all of the support they have received from the community, from local businesses to the local government.

“The mayor came last year. He said we were

bringing music back to Riverview. He told me he got goosebumps when he walked in and saw the community gathered there.”

Seventy3 Productions’ work truly seems like a calling. Matt and Rachel balance running the company alongside their careers and family life.

Recently Carolann Jardine joined the team. =“Carolann keeps Rachel and me on task.

She has taken on a lot of the artist’s side of things; she is extremely talented at that. I would not be able to do this without their help.”

As the company grows, Matt has big ideas for the future: “I am a huge fan of Stephen Wilson Jr., so my goal is to bring him to the Maritimes! I would love to

see Summer Nights grow into something bigger—it would be awesome to have classic rock at the Holy Whale, and a hiphop show downtown. A festival that encompasses the tri-community would be amazing. It would also be awesome to put a concert back on Magnetic Hill someday.”

Beyond the big dreams, Summer Nights’ roots remain personal to the Sutherlands.

“The community has been really great to our family–we want to build this into something that can give back. Our goal is to figure out how Levi can be involved, whether that is helping choose a charity or supporting scholarship opportunities. He is really the catalyst for the whole festival.”

HOPEWELL ROCKS PROVINCIAL PARK EARNS GLOBAL RECOGNITION

he Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park was named one of the best beaches in the world in the 2026 Travelers' Choice Awards Tripadvisor added a new One of a Kind category to their Best of the Best Beaches award, recognizing “Extraordinary Coastal Destinations” beyond sun and sand.

The Hopewell Rocks are the only Canadian beach to make the top 10. With the highest tides in the world, they rank #8, just under beaches in Hawai’i and Easter Island. The #1 spot went to South Africa’s Boulder Beach where visitors can see endangered penguins in the wild.

The Travelers' Choice Awards are based on both the quality and quantity of reviews on Tripadvisor’s listings.

The Hopewell Rocks have a solid 4.7 stars out of 5 across 2,859 reviews.

Commenters of course emphasize the Fundy tides and the fact that visitors can walk on the sea floor only to kayak above it hours later, but they also praise the park’s helpful and friendly staff.

What does this mean for tourism this summer?

The Hopewell Rocks reported a 21% increase in visitors, and a 28% increase in revenue last year. They had already extended their season due to demand and will stay open until October 25 in 2026.

Being named a top global beach destination has the potential to boost tourism even further, not just for the Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park but for surrounding communities, especially if daytrips can be turned into longer stays. However, increased interest also comes with its challenges, especially in accommodating all that new demand.

We spoke to Minister of Tourism, Heritage and Culture Isabelle Thériault on the outcomes the Tripadvisor award will have for the region.

Excerpt/highlights of our conversation: It is an honour to be chosen for such a unique award. The fact that it highlights the really unique beaches that we have here in New Brunswick is very exciting.

This award attracted media attention; it reached over 91 million

views. It's the equivalent of $4 million in advertising exposure. All this attention, and the marketing and promotion we do, translates into increases in visitors and revenue.

Last year was an exceptional summer. We launched the Get a Sense of New Brunswick campaign, which was really well received. We got awards for it.

We're preparing for another good summer. We're doing everything to get ready to welcome people to New Brunswick.

The Fundy region, including the Hopewell Rocks, is what I call an anchor. It's one of the big tourism attractions in NB, and having this attention on it helps other small businesses and tourism operators grow and thrive.

I think the One of a Kind category matches what visitors want now.

We still have visitors

who want the beach-andsand experience, and we can offer that with many beaches along the coast, but people are also looking for diversity.

People are looking for different accommodations and new experiences. The Bay of Fundy and Hopewell Rocks give them this unique experience. There is more water there than all the fresh water in all the rivers in the world combined. The tides are amazing; the water level rises one foot every five minutes.

I've been there several times, and every time I go, I'm in awe of the place. My son went last year on a school trip. It's an amazing place for visitors, but also for New Brunswickers.

A Shakespearean Bridge Game

T

his tongue-in-cheek play was written by Audrey Bates of Moncton and presented at an Elderhostel at which she and her husband Aubrey were staying. It was performed to an enthusiastic audience. The play combined two of Audrey’s favourite things – bridge and her love of language and wordplay.

Aubrey and Audrey both passed away in 2018. The Bates family offers this in remembrance of Audrey, her sense of humour, and her gift with words, for Mother’s Day.
