t is summer, and that can only mean festivals and celebrations. In this issue, we review a number of summer opportunities to enjoy the fresh air, have fun, and perhaps learn something about our corner of the world.

That includes an Orienteering festival, the fete de l’Acadie, Parks for All, a rejuvenated Hillsborough Happenings, Summer in Salisbury, Art in the Park, Artist Residencies at the Molly Kool Centre, and the 50th anniversary Quilt Show and Sale at the Albert County Museum – and there are other enjoyable events as well.

Whew! With all that happening, there is no excuse not to get out and enjoy summer.

We also have all of our regular columnists and, of course, cute pets.

“We contacted Alicia, who put us in touch with Karen Rogers of the Butterfly Rangers.

She met with us and our students and helped us do some winter sowing.

then we transplanted some plants that were already established in that field.”

LeBreton adds that she would like to see the garden grow into a longer term partnership with the town. “We will see if Riverview wishes to keep partnering with us and look at sowing the entire field with native pollinator plants.

“Of course, our students move up a grade each year, but I plan to

continue to teach Grade Seven, so I could see taking a different group each year over time as we grow a large native pollinator garden.

“Students learn from this something that will last, and that they can take anywhere through their lives.

They learn that native plants may sometimes

look like weeds but have an important purpose as well. And it is good for them to see that not everything is AI, not everything is on tablet, that nature is there to be enjoyed as it is.”

Making Mill Creek Accessible for All

arks for All has proven to be a hit among Riverview residents living with mobility challenges. The accessibility program provides free tours of Mill Creek Nature Park in an electric golf cart.

The hour-long trail tours allow people who would not otherwise be able to enjoy the park and connect with nature.

“The towering trees, the incredible views from the lookout, the smell of wildflowers, are so important to our mental health and wellbeing,” said Community Recreation Coordinator Ash Arrowsmith.

“Some folks living in nursing homes wake up at 4am because they are

so excited about their trip into the park. Some folks haven't been out in the middle of nature for a long, long time. Many recount special memories of spending time in the woods in their earlier years.”

Parks for All provided over 35 rides in 2023.

In just a few years the program has had to train more volunteer drivers/ guides, provide more time slots, and get a bigger golf cart due to demand. Last summer they provided approximately 60 rides, and partnered with 7 different nursing homes.

Of course, you don’t have to live in a care home to join in on the adventure.

“It is designed to accommodate a wide range of ages and levels of mobil-

ity,” said Outdoor Recreation Programmer, and staff driver, Ryan Beers.

“People have shared how much it means to be given the opportunity to comfortably enjoy nature with a program that feels like it was made with them in mind” Local retiree Linda Lawson shared her experience, “I loved the sights of the trees and plants, the sounds of the birds, the smell of the forest. My husband and grandson followed about 30 feet behind us and had a great time.

I will definitely register again this year."

While the program is primarily offered in the summer, they were able to trial the program during

Light Up last year, before the snow fell.

“We were able to take folks out for an immersive lights experience along the trail,”

explained Arrowsmith.

“One memory stands out to me. There was a family who was able to enjoy the lights for the very first time as a family - one of

the members had limited mobility. They sang carols as they drove along.”

Maple Chicken Pasta Salad Ingredients, Pasta Salad:

Ingredients, Dressing:

• 4 oz rotini pasta (about 1 ½ cups uncooked)

• 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

• ¾ cup shredded mozzarella cheese • 1 cup diced cooked chicken • ½ cup cherry tomatoes sliced in half • ¼ cup sliced red onion • ¼ cup chopped roasted red peppers

• 1 tbsp maple syrup • 2 tbsp virgin olive oil

Instructions: Fill pot with 6 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil. Add pasta and keep cooking temperature at medium heat. Stir occasionally.

When pasta is almost cooked (approx. 10 minutes) add green beans, let cook for another 2 minutes.

S

ummer is finally here! Even if we can’t spend these warm and sunny months lounging in the Mediterranean, we can certainly read about it. The following narratives are all about getting away from it all, savouring place, and living your life differently, even if only temporarily.

Elizabeth von Arnim’s The Enchanted April (1922) has been a classic romance novel for over a century.

Four women escape their daily lives in rainy England to spend a month in a remote corner of the Italian coast.

Mrs. Wilkins (Lotty) spends her days keeping house for a husband who barely notices her existence. She becomes obsessed with an advertisement in the paper for a small medieval castle to be let to “those who appreciate wistaria and sunshine”.

When she sees another woman from her neighborhood looking equally lost in a daydream at the ad, she hatches a plan.

The austere Mrs. Arbuthnot (Rose) thinks Lotty is out of her mind to suggest abandoning their duties and wasting their savings on something as selfish as a holiday. And yet, sunshine and wistaria seem more appealing than her empty home and absent husband.

They manage to find two other women to split the cost of the rental. They arrive in paradise as strangers and have to navigate

sharing space, having privacy, and balancing each one’s need to be “alone but not lonely”.

The widowed Mrs. Fisher looks down on the younger women, comparing everything to the Victorian ideals of her youth. She expects deference and immediately bars the others from “her” section of the shared villa.

Lady Caroline is wealthy and beautiful, and everyone she has ever met wants a piece of her. She finds the peace and quiet she seeks in San Salvatore, but also finds herself wanting to think for the first time in her life.

Lotty immediately reverts back to her old free-spirited self in the enchanting setting, declaring that the only thing that matters is to be surrounded by love, and to give love to others, even if you do not receive it in

return. Her transformation serves as a catalyst for other women to explore their own true natures and hidden desires.

Peter Mayle's 1989 A Year in Provence details he and his wife’s first year living in the south of France after realizing their dream of moving into a 200-yearold stone farmhouse near the village of Ménerbes.

The escapist memoir is full of beautiful landscapes, sunshine, and extraordinary French cuisine. Its ability to transport readers “into all the earthy pleasures of Provençal life” and “let us live vicariously at a tempo governed by seasons, not by days” made A Year in Provence an instant classic.

The newcomers must learn how to greet people properly (is it one, two, or three kisses on the cheek?), and to accept whatever food they are given, no

matter how many courses they’ve had.

In one instance, Mayles asks a server “for a half bottle of white wine to go with the first course, and some red to follow. “No,” he said, “you’re wrong.”

Mayle’s account can feel awkward and outdated at times, like when he refers to the local villagers as peasants, yet overall it remains a light and humorous read for long summer days.

Another option is Jerome K. Jerome’s 1889 classic comedy Three Men in a Boat. Presented as a memoir, the satiric novella follows three men, and a dog, as they aim to escape their everydays with a trip up the Thames.

Cocky and incompetent, the men see no reason why they cannot have a perfectly pleasant holiday rowing themselves upriver and camping overnight, despite

having no experience with boating, camping, or planning of any sort.

For example, the one who suggests the river is described as such “George goes to sleep at a bank from ten to four each day, except Saturdays, when they wake him up and put him outside at two.”

Hilarious misadventures ensue. Their shenanigans include falling in the river, having no way to open canned foods, being swept away with the tide and getting hopelessly lost. Essentially, everything that can go wrong does.

The audiobook voiced

by British comedian Hugh Laurie strikes me as the perfect soundtrack for a (hopefully less disastrous) summer road trip.

These escapist reads will transport you across time and space and inspire a feeling of adventure wherever you are.

Summer sun is 5M km farther, so why is it hot?

or a monthly column that delves into trending daylight hours, there’s no way to soft sell the coming earlier sunsets other than to say the difference since the solstice on June 21 is minimal and certainly not noticeable.

I’ll also rely on some distraction (such as that headline).

The good news is that it’s summer, full of greenery, life, warmth, beach life, air saturated with the scent of organics . . . and daylight.

Plenty of daylight.

This is it.

The peak sunset at the solstice on June 21 — the first day of summer — was 9:14 p.m., and it remained

that way until July 1 when sunset was a barely earlier 9:13 p.m. This has zero impact but it does mark the beginning of a long and certain six-month downward trend that ends poorly.

Adding some insult to this is we’re just now getting decent weather after an unseasonably cool and wet June.

The distraction of good weather The first day of summer marks the inevitable beginning of daylight hours heading in the wrong direction. It’s slight at first — unnoticeable, even though my father swears that he can feel it is his bones — but by the first day of autumn three months later, we’ll have lost nearly two hours at sunset (7:20 p.m.), roughly the same sunset as the first day of spring in March.

We’re distracted from decreasing daylight in July and August because there’s so much of it

and the weather isn’t constantly annoying us.

On July 22, sunset will be 9 p.m. — a loss of 14 minutes from the solstice — the first time since May 29 that sunset was as early as 9 p.m. That means, whether we realized it, we had more than seven weeks of sunset later than 9 p.m. The total daylight loss, including at sunrise, on that day is about 36 minutes.

By the end of the month, we’ll be losing about 2 ½ minutes a day, total. On July 31, sunset will be 8:50 p.m., 24 minutes earlier than it was at the solstice in June.

Sunrise at the beginning of July was 5:32 a.m., growing only slightly later until about July 10. Sunset will be 5:38 a.m. that morning and will begin losing about a minute a day and more toward the end of the month.

Hey, why is daylight decreasing?

The Earth rotates on an axis of 23.5º relative to

its orbit around the sun.

At the winter solstice in December, the axis is fully tilted 23.5º away from sun, at least for those of us in the northern hemisphere.

At the summer solstice six months later, the northern hemisphere is fully tilted 23.5º toward the sun. The swing of 47º directly translates to the sun’s elevation change in our sky throughout the year and the amount of daylight there is. Basically, as the Earth orbits the sun after the summer solstice, the relative tilt of the Earth toward the

sun decreases 47º until the winter solstice in December.

A few fun facts: There’s a misconception that the Earth is closer to the sun in the summer in the Northern Hemisphere, when it’s actually at its farthest. The distance is a significant five million kilometres (152 million vs.

147 million) or 3.4 per cent farther than in winter.

Summer is hot because of axis tilt and not the distance, although it would be slightly hotter if we were closer. Just ask Australia about their summers.

“Everybody should be line dancing!”

T

o say that Nicole LeBrun has a passion in life would be an understatement. She travels the world looking for choreographers to bring to New Brunswick to share her passion - line dancing.

LeBrun, who operates Danz with / avec Nicole in Campbellton, will stage her Danz and Groove Line Danz Event in Riverview over the Labour Day weekend.

Says LeBrun, “I go all around the world to scout choreographers who are great at what they do, but who are also friendly and inspiring. I bring them to our region to teach and to share their passion with local line dancers. This will be our second year in Riverview.”

The event is already sold out, and the venue does not contain enough space for spectators. Attendees are expected from across the Maritimes, Ontario, and Quebec.

This year’s two choreographers are coming from Ireland and Belgium.

Lebrun recounts that line dancing has been popular for many years, “probably even before they started calling it line dancing. It became really popular when the Billy Ray Cyrus song “Achy Breaky Heart” came out in 1992. The video had a line dance for that song, and it exploded from there.

“Today, country music is still popular for line dancing, but now we also perform line dances to every kind of music, including Latin, Cha Cha, pop music that you hear on the radio; really, anything.

“And line dancing is for all ages. Miss Yee Haw is popular on YouTube, and she is nine years old. She is very popular. In my class, I have dancers in their eighties, and I know of people in their nineties who are line dancing.”

LeBrun says her passion for line dancing is rooted in “the smiles on everyone’s faces. Everybody is friendly, everybody is having fun.

When you are there you do not think about any stress in your life. You just focus on your steps and the result is amazing.

“Everybody should take up line dancing! I have been doing this for more than thirty years and it is not something you ever grow out of.”

She got started when her mother was terminally ill.

“My mother always wanted to go to Nashville, so we found a bus tour and went.

We saw line dancers at the Wild Horse Saloon and were amazed. About a year after that I found someone who was teaching and started taking classes, and a few years after that I started teaching myself.

“I have been doing it ever since.”

Writer, publisher, and retired school librarian Kate Merlin Hanson of Riverview recalls her exposure to line dancing. “My husband and I were taking ballroom dance with Mary Cain, and the teacher would have line dances as well. They looked like fun and I wanted to dance with the cool kids!

“So, I started taking line dance classes with her.

When I retired the first time I took classes during the day. I was not very good at first, I appreciated teachers who helped me. So, when I started to get a little better I wanted to help other people to pass that on. When there were beginners I would help them. “(Mary) wanted to take a break and no-one would take on the class. So, I taught a

few times, and then later on when she was not going to be teaching she asked if I would take it over. By then I was starting to go to other people’s classes as well. We went to a big event, and it was at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vaccines were just becoming available, I was concerned I would catch COVID, so I wore a mask the whole time.

“The instructor from England was taking videos for the International Line Dance Federation, which was putting on a course online. The hardest part was taping yourself teaching a dance, which terrified me.

But it also gave me the confidence to tape dances so that my students now can use my videos to practice.”

She teaches three classes

a week now for the Town of Riverview. Like LeBrun, Hanson praises the sense of connection that people enjoy through line dancing which, she says, helped get her through the pandemic.

“The teacher would go on Facebook and teach a class, and we would all be dancing in our living rooms while she danced on Facebook. We all still felt connected, even though we were physically isolated at home. When twenty-five people could gather outside, she rented a parking lot at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, and we would all dance in our own parking space.

“It just got us through it.

I wanted to pass that on to other people and help them feel connected to the greater line dance community.”

Q&A with James Wilson

HOW HOMECOMING DAYS CAME BACK FROM THE BRINK

H

illsborough Homecoming Days grew out of Steeves Week, which started when the Steeves family regularly held reunions in the area. In 1966, the week-long celebration was renamed and opened to the entire community.

In 1998 the festival had expanded to 10 full days but was down to a single weekend by 2019. In 2024, Homecoming Days Committee Chair James Wilson set out to revive the major event he remembered from his childhood.

Q: How did you get involved in Homecoming Days?

When I was much younger, we went to Homecoming Days. Back then it was still a week-long event.

When I went off to university, and then out west, I lost touch with it. What really got me interested in getting involved was asking my nephew about Homecoming Days one day after I came back; he had no idea what I was talking about.

I later learned Homecoming Days had a pattern where a succession of people would step up and

do the primary organizing, and a lot of the time it fell on that one person to do it. In the late 90s, the last person doing that, Lois Snider, had to step away for health reasons.

The Steeves House Museum took over the organizing. The pandemic nearly ended Homecoming Days outright, but they managed to keep it on life support.

In early 2024, I contacted the museum and offered to help. Two volunteers had organized it the previous year, and they were waiting on funding.

Around March they came back to me and said they were not getting funding and could not commit to organizing anything, because the previous year they had done that and ended up with a deficit.

I said I was still willing to help. They had seven vacant director positions, and said that if I wanted to do it, I could.

Q: How did you manage to grow it and get more people involved?

The first thing I did was make a callout for volunteers. I set up the first meeting, and exactly one other person showed up.

That was not an auspicious

start. But I persevered and arranged another meeting.

At that one we had around four people.

A lot of people on the committee were like me: they remembered what Homecoming Days used to be when they were young.

We started organizing in April. We had no money and no account set up.

The first year was about putting together what we could, and it actually went really well. We had a lot of support in the community.

Q: Did you have a vision for what you wanted to accomplish?

I had three goals in mind: First, to get it back to a week-long event.

Second, to bring back the parade. Third, and probably most importantly, to put the organizing committee on a more stable foundation.

The first year accomplished my first goal: getting it back to a week-long event. I think we got one event on each day.

The second year, we started organizing around February. We had set up a bank account, and things were a little more organized because we formally appointed positions: secretary,

chair, treasurer, and so on.

At the end of that season, we more or less broke even. We had an idea of what we could do each year in terms of expenses.

The committee was stable.

We have eight committee members.

Going into year three, 2026, I have accomplished all the objectives I set out to accomplish.

Q: What can people look forward to this year?

Now that we have the width that we want, we are trying to add some depth.

I remember kite flying from my childhood. That’s back this year. The LEGO contest was also brought back last year.

The Legion has really stepped up this year to be a host for various events, like the new video game tournament.

The Legion and Kiwanis are also having a ball game and an after-party with a barbecue and kids' activities.

The library does its own events, but they try to work around our schedule.

The garden party at the Peace Park is always a lot of fun: it has a fish pond, face painting, cakewalk, and live music.

Q: What are you most excited about, personally?

This year is when I get to actually enjoy everything that has been happening.

I was not there the first year because I had to work. In the second year, I was away that entire week because of scheduling we had arranged much earlier.

This year, my work has allowed me to take the entire week off, so I should be there for every event.

I have great volunteers, and I appreciate them so much.

Q: Do you have plans for the future of Homecoming Days?

They used to have a wagon ride, seeing all the different sites around Hillsborough, which I think would be really cool.

We were trying to organize those, but it’s not going to happen this year.

LA FÊTE NATIONALE DE L'ACADIE: 145 YEARS OF HISTORY

ational Acadian Day is coming up on August 15. The date comes from the Feast of the Assumption, which honours the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of Acadians.

Celebrated since the first national Acadian convention in Memramcook in 1881, the holiday has evolved from a primarily religious tradition to a more secular festival celebrating Acadian culture.

National Acadian Day celebrations took place in and around the church well into the mid-20th century. Practices varied across communities, with some putting little emphasis on the day, and others observing it fervently.

Oral accounts describe many forms of observance including French masses and hymns, candlelit processions, pilgrimages, and even driving a statue of the Virgin Mary through the village of Balmoral.

Patriotism went hand in hand with the feast day; flags were raised and speakers invited to talk about Acadian

history and identity.

Community picnics served as fundraisers for local parishes as well as social gatherings. Revelers remember enjoying games, bazaars, fiddle music, dancing, lobster dinners, chicken fricot, and poutines râpées. Many Acadians living far from home would return for August 15 and reunite with friends and family they had not seen in years.

Accounts from the 70s and 80s show the transition of National Acadian Day from an event centered around the church to a widespread cultural celebration. Crowds gathered for evening concerts and danced late into the night.

The Tintamarre cemented itself as a means of being seen and heard. People would make noise by banging pots, ringing bells, playing horns, and any other means available, as an expression of Acadian pride and joy.

After decades of advocacy, the Government of Canada finally passed the National Acadian Day Act in 2003. Dozens of official celebrations now take place across the Maritimes every year.

Art in the Park Offers Old and New Favourites

rt in the Park returns to Caseley Park this year with a twist: two of the free concerts are moving to Holy Whale Beer Hall. Third Harmony played the first Art on the Move show on July 8, and Shane Douthwright will follow on August 5.

The concert series kicked off on June 24 with a Youth Concert featuring the top six groups from this years’ Battle of the Bands. The following Wednesday was Canada Day, with live music in the park all afternoon.

New Molly Kool Artist in Residency Program Explores Possibilities

he Molly Kool Heritage Centre has long been a space for storytelling, hosting kitchen parties, performances, artisans and workshops celebrating the people and places along the Fundy Coast.

They are incredible creators who lean into questions — Executive Director Micha Fardy

Friends of Fundy, stewards of the famed sea captain’s childhood home, aims not only to preserve history, but to continue creating and sharing stories that connect

people to place and nature.

In June, they launched the Molly Kool Artist in Residency (AiR) program at the heritage centre in concert with Fundy National Park and the Fundy Biosphere Region.

The residency explores “how art can help us with greater appreciation and education, how we contribute to the world around us, and how we understand our opportunities,” said Executive Director Micha Fardy.

A WORK IN PROGRESS “In the summer of 2025, a couple of local artists said it would be interesting to use the space as a studio and have conversations with community members and people visiting the park,” Fardy explained.

“So we tried it, and we received really great feedback.”

This idea developed into the Molly Kool

Artist in Residency.

Four artists will take up a residency at the Centre between June 29-August 6. Still in its beginning stages, the program is a collaborative process between the artists and organizers as they explore what the program can be and how to shape it in the future.

The organizers also have an open invitation for any artists who want to help co-create the residency, and are looking to work with partners such as the Indigenous Tourism Association in New Brunswick.

“Our vision is that this is ongoing. Whether it can be annual or perhaps biannual, we’re not sure. It could take on different themes or become a platform to explore new approaches.

But we know it is about landscapes, connection, and storytelling.”

SUMMER SESSIONS Each artist has created their own way of engaging visitors in hands-on storytelling through their work, and will have finished at least one new piece by the end of their residency.

“All four of these artists embrace a set of values and principles: connecting with place, identifying with strong female or female-identifying leaders, trailblazers, and that pioneering spirit,” said Fardy. “They are incredible creators who lean into questions.”

The final pieces will be part of a larger exhibit at the Molly Kool Centre during the Rising Tide Trails & Tunes Festival.

Inspired by the colourful signal flags used by mariners, her residency activity Fundy Signals invites visitors to look more closely at the natural world, and create their own signal inspired by their time in the park.

JULY 6 - JULY 11 Ronda Cynthia Fraser recently retired and embraced the fact that she has been an artist all her life. She had her first exhibit earlier this year at Moonbrook Manor.

She finds discarded objects on her property, then repurposes them in her work, imagining where they came from and where they are going.

Her pieces often include fun witticisms and punchlines.

JULY 18 - JULY 26 Emily Jane Kelly creates realistic and abstract

art that brings nature into the home. She uses rock pigments to present the diversity of the environment and give time and attention to places and things that are often overlooked.

Visitors can drop in to the centre to see how she transforms rock into art from 1:30–4:30 p.m during her residency.

JULY 28 - AUGUST 6 Ann Piché’s photography sits at the divide between science and art. Formerly an electronic technician, she uses experimental light and motion techniques to build images exploring the anxiety people can feel when facing the unfamiliar.

Interested in phenomena at the edge of what can be explained, she is interested in the Fundy tidal flats that disappear and reappear twice a day.

Canadian Orienteering Festival Comes to White Rock

O

ver 100 contestants will compete in the Canadian Orienteering Festival (COF) opening ‘Fishbones’ Weekend.

Middle and Long races will be held in Hillsborough on July 25 & 26, followed by a Knockout Sprint at Universite de Moncton July 27. The Championships take place in Halifax July 31-August 2.

Fishbones Event Director Harold McQuade explains what each event entails: Tell me more about orienteering, and the local events.

Participants are given a marked-up map with

courses, and controls to visit. They are points to find, like a treasure hunt in the woods. It is usually a footrace, although we have had bike and ski races as well. We also have an event on the Université de Moncton campus.

The sport is suitable for a variety of physical abilities. It is organized by categories, starting at age 10. We actually have someone over age 90 registered for our Hillsborough event.

The courses are designed so the youngest competitors can finish in about 30 minutes, while the octogenarian competitors are given up to two hours.

The elite runners want a technical course that is difficult, and when they

are finished, they should be out of breath. We try to accommodate everybody in between.

You do not have to qualify. All our events are open to the public, even the championship events.

What does the title ‘Fishbones’ refer to?

Out west, a gentleman named Adrian Zissos created what is known as ‘Barebones’. Orienteering championships usually occur over two weekends. The first is a warm-up session of the same calibre as the championship events, but more bare bones. They are still good courses, but the organizers do not have to work as hard, and you can use fewer people.

We adapted the name to Fishbones because we are

on the East Coast.

What’s the difference between the sprint, middle, and long events?

The sprint event is what it sounds like–you are going as fast as you can.

It can be done in about 15 minutes by the faster competitors. The course is not very long, usually 1-2km. The controls are not hidden, but if you are not paying attention, you can run right by them.

The middle event is more technical. Legs can be from 2-10km. The competitors are going through the forest and really have to know where they are.

A long event can also range from 2-10km, but the legs may be longer.

The route planning is different, and less

technically detailed. They have to find the best route from one place to another.

The elite runners move very fast. The 21-year-old runners can run 10km through the forest in 45 minutes.

I have been in the woods so many times that I know about every square metre of it. If someone put me somewhere in the woods without a compass, I could walk right out in a couple of minutes because I know the place so well.

What are the controls they have to find?

We put white and orange flags in the woods. We run a strip down the sides for people who are colour blind. Sometimes we have competitions that go 24 hours long, so we use

fluorescent colours that shine from a distance when your headlight hits them at night.

They have to be at distinct features, at least one metre high, like a boulder. The challenge is to find that boulder-there may be a dozen in the area, but they have to find the right one.

The flag sits on a stand, and on top is a small electronic unit with a number on it. To confirm they’ve found it, they wear a small device on their fingertip, tap the unit, and it records their visit.

These are point-to-point races, so competitors have to visit all the controls in numerical order. If they miss a control, it is called a mispunch, and they are disqualified.

In 1926 entrepreneurs Edward Boudreau and Alderic Belliveau started a new cab service for Moncton and area (long before the term Greater Moncton came into regular use, but including what is today Riverview, Dieppe, and surrounding rural and semi-rural communities).

White Cab started with two used cars,

soon improving its fleet to include seven new OverlandWhippet vehicles (a popular manufacturer of the time).

The company grew and became known as one of the area’s most successful businesses. Ownership transferred to Eric Cormier in 1948; he carried on the tradition of excellent service and the company continued to expand.

From the beginning, White Cab emphasized prompt, friendly, and professional service. In the early days drivers were required to wear uniforms, cars were spotless inside and out, and drivers followed a company code of ethics.

White Cab pioneered many innovations in the local industry – specialized cabs with skis on the front, and even snowmobiles, to deal with the region’s fabled snowfalls, limousine and bus services, a leading role in the conversion to owner-operated cabs from company-owned cabs, and, in 1947, becoming the first cab company in Canada to offer what was at the time a cutting-edge innovation: two-way radios in each cab.

While drivers no longer wear uniforms, White Cab continues to provide the same level of professionalism, service, and cleanliness.

Benny Cormier took over White Cab from his father, Eric Cormier, who had been a driving force in the industry and who introduced many of White Cab’s innovations. Under Benny’s leadership the company continued to grow and innovate, becoming the first cab company in New Brunswick to introduce digital dispatching and GPS tracking of vehicles.

Claude-Pierre Gagné and his partner Janice Diotte took the wheel from Benny following the COVID-19 pandemic and after having served in management roles prior to that.

Both have extensive experience in the taxi business.

Benny Cormier remains as President.

Gagné notes, “this has always been a family business, and it still is. When Eric Cormier owned this company, his kids were involved. It has always been family run. And, many families have worked here over the years, including siblings and couples; so, it has been family run, and also featured families in the workforce.”

Gagné recalls that he began as a driver in 2002.

He says that some things have changed – there is less night work, for example – while other aspects of the industry remain the same.

“It all comes down to service.”

Gagné says, “people will always need transportation. The area is growing so much that our business continues to increase.

There is always going to be a need for someone to pick up a phone, dial a number, and say, ‘can you send me a cab.’

Cottage Strong: The Movement You’re Already Doing (and What It’s Missing)

S

ummer at the cottage has a rhythm all its own. Hauling the canoe down to the water.

Stacking wood. Carrying groceries up from the dock. Squatting down to pull weeds or unclip the tarp on the boat. If you’re active at the cottage, you’re moving a lot more than you probably give yourself credit for.

As a kinesiologist, I like to look at everyday tasks through the lens of what they’re actually training. It turns out a lot of cottage life doubles as a decent workout, if you do it the right way.

Hauling and carrying = loaded carries. Carrying a cooler, a bag of firewood, or two full water jugs up from the dock is essentially a farmer’s carry, one of the best exercises for grip strength, posture, and core stability. Gym trainers program this on purpose.

The key is to slow down.

Stand tall, brace your core, and walk with control rather than rushing the load up the hill. Good posture here protects your back the same way it would under a barbell.

Getting in and out of the canoe or kayak =

functional squats and hip hinges. Lowering yourself into a boat and pushing back up works the same muscles as a squat. Next time, treat it like you’re at the gym: bend at the hips and knees together, keep your chest up, and lower slowly instead of dropping in. Push back up through your heels. A slow, controlled rep here builds real strength. A quick, sloppy one is how people tweak a knee or a back.

Splitting or stacking wood = a full-body rotational workout. This one uses your legs, core, and shoulders together, similar to a woodchopper exercise you’d see in a gym. Keep the movement controlled through your core rather than swinging from your lower back, and take a breath between reps instead of rushing through the pile.

Swimming = one of the best cardio and upper body options out there.

Low impact, joint-friendly, and it works muscles a lot of land-based cardio misses, especially when you focus on smooth, even strokes rather than thrashing to get somewhere fast.

Here’s the part I don’t want you to skip past, though: as good as all of this is, it’s not a replacement for structured strength training. Cottage movement tends to be inconsistent, heavy one day, nothing the next, and it doesn’t systematically challenge your muscles the way a proper program does. Real strength, the kind that protects your joints, keeps your bones dense, and helps you keep doing all of this for decades, comes from progressive resistance training two to three times a week.

Think of cottage life as the bonus round, not the main event.

So enjoy the wood hauling and the dock walks. Slow down, mind your form, and treat these moments like the mini workouts they are. Just don’t let a summer of “I’m getting so much exercise at the cottage” become an excuse to skip your actual workouts. Your muscles need both.

The annual “Quilt Show & Sale” is a major fundraiser for the Albert County Historical Society that operates the Albert County Museum. At the AGM, each year the Quilt Show Committee presents a donation to the ACHS from the funds raised by the Quilt Show through show admissions, raffle ticket sales and commission from the sale of quilts and other items during the show.

The “50th Anniversary of the ACHS Quilt Show & Sale” has also received the catchy title “Fifty Golden Years of Quilting”. Dawne McLean, President of the Albert County Historical Society, expressed with gratitude, “The ‘Fifty Golden Years of the Quilt Show & Sale’ is the product of the dedication and organized hard work of the Quilt Show Committee Chairs and Committee Members over the 50 years, also including the support of community volunteers and participating quilters.

“For the ACHS Quilt Show & Sale to have continued as a successful community event reaching its 50th Anniversary, is an amazing

achievement that deserves recognition and a commemorative celebration!”

Longtime Quilt Show volunteer, Glenna Steeves, during an interview with The River View, recalled personal experiences and memories of the quilt shows of past years. She became a member of the Quilt Committee in 2004, working with Dawn Kinnie and Betty Cornell, learning the new registration system for all the quilts and smaller handicraft items ... that were many!

Glenna served in a variety of roles, including ten years as Chair of the Quilt Show Committee from 2006 to 2017 and remained on the committee looking after the registration of the quilts in the following years of the expanding show.

“When the Quilt Show first started it was held in the Courthouse at the Museum with the quilts draped over the benches.

When I first started working at the Quilt Show in 2004, the Community Hall at the Museum had not yet been renovated. Let us just say it was interesting!

“The kitchen section was still an add-on being partially attached to the main building. But we made it work.

“At that time, on set-up day, everyone would bring their quilts, and hundreds of small, handcrafted pieces that were individually priced. Cataloguing the quilts was not as painstaking as the work the ladies in charge of the small handmade items had to do. It just got to be too much!

“We made changes over the years, so now the smaller items in the show

are sewn items, priced at $35 or more, such as wall hangings and table runners.”

In the earlier years, recalls Steeves, “there was no security, so you would hear people say an interesting thing – ‘we slept with the quilts.’ We took turns, we took our air mattresses and our sleeping bags, and we slept with the quilts to keep them safe overnight.

“Both of my sons worked at the Museum in the summertime, and they both slept with the quilts.

“For a time, the show and sale were held at Peck Memorial Hall in

Hillsborough, before returning to the Museum in 2010 following the renovations to the Community Hall, as well as the other Museum buildings.”

“For this year’s 50th Anniversary Quilt Show & Sale”, says Steeves, “there are fifty-seven large quilts registered, forty-seven small quilts, twenty-nine crib quilts, twenty-five tops, fiftythree small articles, and two vintage quilts.

“In my year end report as Chair of the Quilt Committee in 2017, over 100 quilts were registered for the show with 26 large quilts being sold, as well as 14 quilt

tops, 18 lap quilts and many finished items. The Quilt Show Committee donated $6,000 to the Historical Society in 2017.”

Marjorie Henwood, Chair of the Quilt Show Committee, has been an active Committee member working at the show for numerous years, registering her quilts in the annual show and sale, as well as scheduling the volunteer workers for the show. She explained, “the present trend is toward smaller quilted pieces, including lap-size quilts. Material is getting to be expensive, and the number of large quilts is down. The

smaller sizes are becoming very popular.”

Potential buyers and visitors coming to our ACHS Quilt Show & Sale are a mix of local residents, visitors from different Quilt Guilds across the Maritimes, and tourists from far and wide, who make up an important part of the show’s sales.

McLean, Steeves, and Henwood all agree that quilting and other forms of needlework remain popular and fortunately are being adopted by the younger generations as they discover the joys of these crafts. The traditional crafts are experiencing a modern revival!

Summer in Salisbury: Community Event Round Up

etween block parties, festivals and the new pool programming, Salisbury residents have a lot to look forward to this summer. Recreation and Wellness Coordinator Marni Golemba and Events & Strategic Projects Coordinator Katy Doucette provided a run down of all the exciting community events on offer.

SUMMER CAMPS Day camps for kids aged 5-12 run June 29–August 28 at Salisbury Fire & Rescue. Four free and four paid camps are on offer, with a week off for Community Days in midAugust.

Each week has a different theme, from sports, to science, to adventure.

Sports & Rec Week has

already provided lots of free outdoor time as campers explored parks, played dodgeball, soccer, baseball and more in June.

As the summer continues kids will get the chance to explore the town and trails, learn about local birds, make art, and conduct experiments.

“We try to give everyone an opportunity to participate,” said Golemba. “Our most popular is Fun Week.

Every day is fun, no matter what, but Fun Week fills up really fast.”

Paid camps include excursions to places such as Magnetic Hill Zoo and the Boardwalk. Water Week has trips to Magic Mountain, Lion’s Pool and Centennial Park & Pool.

Registration for the free camps opens weekly on the Tuesday before at 6 p.m. through the town’s Facebook page, and is first come, first served.

reported. “We have solid programming. We host swim sessions for the three main daycares in Salisbury, and the public can join in with them. We do a July session, and an August session.”

BLOCK PARTIES The Town introduced block parties in 2023 to foster communitybuilding after amalgamation.

“People appreciated that we were going to them. A lot of our events are hosted in Highland Park. It’s nice for us to bring it to the outer wards for a change,” said Doucette.

Following the election in May, this years’ parties are focused on connecting each ward with their specific councillor, as well as community organizations like Eco360 and the Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance.

“It’s growing rapidly, and we are only in the second year. Next year we'll see who we can bring in to top it, or maybe bring in more acts and extend the hours.”

Fox in the Park, Beldi Box, Flippin’ Mike’s, and Fusion Express will be onsite all evening with craft beer and good eats.

COMMUNITY DAYS Salisbury’s newest festival will be followed by its oldest: Community Days runs from August 13-15 this year.

Started back in 1975, Community Days has many traditions, but it has also evolved over the years. The long-standing summer gathering was entirely run by a group of volunteers until the municipality stepped in a few years ago.

ity to collaborate with the community. The municipality brought more resources to build it up,” said Doucette. “We are hoping to maintain the tradition while updating as needed.”

In June, the Town announced the cancellation of the traditional Community Days parade due to a lack of participation in recent years. The usual post-parade activities like markets and games will instead take place at Highland Park.

The official schedule has not been published at the time of printing, but Town run events include the HubCap Comedy Festival, Trivia Night, and a full day of events at Highland Park, including lawn tractor races, live music and a beer garden in the evening.
