Neigungsgruppe Design, Directors of VIENNA DESIGN WEEK “The programme for this the third year of the festival takes up more space in the folder than ever before. We are pleased that through these years so many patrons, sponsors, and programme partners have remained faithful to us; and many new ones have joined us. However, our focal point has been and remains the designers. In this folder you will find special recommendations from our principal partners. Neigungsgruppe Design and the entire team of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK call on your sporting spirit and time management skills because they would naturally like to warmly recommend each and every event. As an added incentive this year there is also the ‘VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Wanderpass’ (tour book)*: as is commonly done, the design pinnacles that have been reached will be stamped in it and the most industrious hikers will be honoured. Artemide Artemide modern classic The “modern classic” exhibition is made up of 18 light fixtures, designed by the most famous Italian designers and architects of the 1960s. As cult objects today, they exemplify the first decade in the history of the manufacturer and most of all, the international success of Italian design.

Freiraum/quartier21 international Real-World Laboratory – Central European Design Produced for the St. Étienne International Design Biennial, this exhibition presents outstanding designs from the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria. The Vienna designer Sebastian Menschhorn (A) has radicalised this form of furnishing in his wonderfully anachronistic, and therefore modern, installation at mood, with a glance back at history and a promise that we won’t be able to believe our eyes.

Meanwhile the Prague-based designer Lucie Koldova (CZ) will be presenting her installation at Wilhelm Jungmann & Neffe, the undisputed king of fine woollen fabrics, and has built a functional, contemporary throne for the manager of this traditional, high-quality establishment.

Two corners further on, the London-based designer Max Lamb (GB) will be exhibiting his examination of the three disciplines of his host, J. & L. Lobmeyr – glass blowing, cutting, and engraving – in which he demonstrates in an amazing way the “value” of hand craftsmanship.

Passionsweg 2 takes you to the Stuwer Quarter, where the Vienna designer Tina Lehner (A) at the Kürschnermeister Weinberger has turned discarded Persian lamb coats into stuffed animals and security blankets in a poodle look.

At the Ledermanufaktur Posenanski it is also rather “beastly”, for the Lausanne-based designer Adrien Rovero (CH) has produced intelligent toys in the forms of animals, making use of a computeroperated cutting machine.

Meanwhile, at the flower shop wildwuchs – Der Blumenladen im 2ten, the Vienna-based design team breaded escalope (A) have reinvented city dwellers’ relationship to plants. Instead of soft-serve ice cream, liquid fertilizer and seeds are put into the ice cream cone, in a call for “urban gardening”.

P2 Reception: Fri, 2 October, from 18:00 Passionswege On Passionsweg 3 the Vienna industrial designer Adam WehselySwiczinsky (A) with Petz Hornmanufaktur will exhibit the results of his work with the pre-industrial material horn in a post-industrial context, presented in leather at Horn’s Wien.

Further on, Meran-based designer Walter Thaler (I) will be occupying himself with the sensory and emotional experiences of the traditional shoemaker’s trade at Rudolf Scheer & Söhne.

With growing chains, enlarged jewellery details, and suddenly appearing ornaments, the Vienna-based designer duo mischer’traxler (A) will grant you fresh insights into jewellery at Rozet & Fischmeister Kammerjuweliere.

The project of Barcelona-based designer Marei Wollersberger (A) with Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten is less concerned with the porcelain object than with its cultural context and a vision of production at a manufactory.

Wien Museum Karlsplatz Stadtalphabet. Vienna from A to Z The graphic designer Martin Ulrich Kehrer (A) has photographed thousands of inscriptions and shop signs in Vienna.
