WHAT IS IT WITH THE HAIR LOSS DURING LOCKDOWN?

Model Ashley Graham, TV presenter Trinny Woodhall and Model Katie Price have been just of a few celebrities that have opened up recently about their own personal hair loss experiences.

As an increasing number of female celebrities have admitted recently that they’ve experienced hair loss during lockdown, UK Dermatologists have also reported a surge in female patients visiting them in light of excessive hair shedding since the pandemic.

What are the three most common causes of hair loss in women?

According to Dr Liakas, Medical Director of Vie Aesthetics “If your hair loss has intensified in the last year, it could be down to many factors, but stress is the most likely cause. Hair loss is usually associated with androgenic alopecia, but it can be caused by a number of factors that can often be hard to identify. Genetics, hormones, extreme weight loss and iron deficiency are all common, but experts also suggests that losing hair is more often than not due to stress.”

STRESS

It is not unusual to experience hair loss when you are also experiencing elevated levels of stress or anxiety. Dr Liakas explains “ On average we have around 100,000 hair follicles on our heads. Those follicles flit between growth phases and rest phases. Mainly, our follicles are in the growth phase, which is also known as anagen. Often, when the hair follicle transitions to the resting phase, also known as telogen, the hair is shed. When you suffer from stress, your can often experience an abnormally high shift of hairs into the telogen phase all at once, causing obvious hair loss. Hair loss can dent self-confidence and cause enormous psychological stress, and actually this can create a ‘Catch 22 effect – increased stress equals increased hair loss.”

HORMONAL CHANGES

Pregnancy In the UK we see around 700,000 births each year, of which a staggering 40-50% of the new mums will suffer from ‘Postpartum Hair Loss’ soon after child birth – that’s around 350,000 women a year at risk of losing their hair.

Pregnancy is one of the most natural of experiences a woman can go through, however it can also put your body under a lot of strain. On the plus side, many women often enjoy increased hair growth during their pregnancy, and a reduction in normal shedding – meaning your hair has never looked or felt better. The downside is that within a few months after childbirth the reverse happens, when a sudden reduction in oestrogen can cause a disruption to the Hair Growth Cycle, the result of this being increased hair loss, and slower growth, and regrowth.

Menopause According to Dr Liakas “Changes in your hormone levels can cause hair thinning. A change in your androgen levels may cause the hair on your head to thin and the hair on your face to feel more coarse. You might notice changes in both your hormones and your hair during the menopause. According to a recent study, approximately two-thirds of women experience some postmenopausal hair loss.”

DIET

If you experience extreme weight loss or are lacking in certain nutrients, its common to experience hair loss. If you are a vegetarian have low irons levels, have heavier than normal periods, or have a history of anemia, you may experience hair loss from iron deficiency. Low levels of zinc, niacin, selenium and vitamin D can also be a consideration when reviewing hair loss factors. Diets very low in protein and carbs have also been found to be potential causes of hair loss.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO TREAT HAIR LOSS?

VieStem Hair is an advanced and revolutionary alternative treatment for hair loss which addresses many of the disadvantages of surgical transplants. The non-surgical procedure uses the body’s own tissue to improve hair density and trigger new growth. It has already been successful in countries such as Singapore, and Vie Aesthetics was the first clinic in the UK to introduce this treatment, which is recommended if you’re suffering from early, mild and moderate forms of hair loss.

Natural Regenerative Micro-grafting Cell Treatment

No-riskNo-scarNo-downtime

VieStem Hair is our signature hair restoration programme , and uses, depending on the needs of patients, one of 2 revolutionary approaches: Regenera Activa® and SeffiHair®.

Unlike types of hair loss that are triggered by external factors such as illness or stress, Androgenetic alopecia (also referred to as male pattern balding or female pattern balding), is a permanent, chronic condition determined by family genetics.

ONE EASY AND AFFORDABLE SOLUTION:VieStem Hair

Dr Liakas has treated hundreds of men and women with VieStem Hair, including a number of celebrities and even royals. Our clients come frm across the UK and abroad.

Dr Liakas explains how VieStem Hair with Regenera Activa works:

"In the first part of the procedure we take a small piece of tissue from an area on your scalp where the hair is still dense and not affected by baldness. A local anaesthetic is injected prior to the procedure and the process is quick and relatively pain-free. From this tissue sample, we harvest regenerative 'progenitor’ (stem) cells from your own hair, which are then mixed in a solution and injected into your scalp where the thinning is occurring. This activates follicles which are nearing the end-phase of their life to become healthy, and over time, capable of producing denser, thicker and stronger hair.

Studies have shown improvements in hair count and scalp coverage can begin to take place after just one month."

VieStem Hair uses a Regenera Activa® machine to break down tissue into 'progenitor’ (stem) cells, or SeffiHair®, a regenerative treatment that uses adipose tissue harvested from the abdomen. The tissue adapts to its environment and grows. The treatment modality used depends on each individual case.

“In combination with regenerative treatments, we also amplify the effects of our procedures with supporting treatments, including carboxytherapy, which increases circulation and advanced DermaLux Triwave MD LED light therapy”, says Dr Liakas.

“These boost and maintain your results to give you the best outcome. The overall result strengthens, thickens and slows down hair loss.”

Unlike hair transplants, VieStem Hair has zero downtime and you can return to your daily activities straight away.

The stemcell micrografting technique is done in one session, and is safe and completely natural and takes around an hour. Results are long-lasting and the procedure can be repeated around every two years (or longer) depending on your own needs.
