THE ART OF MALE CONTOURING From “Brotox” to fillers, Stephen Daultrey looks at why non-surgical tweakments are no longer a taboo for guys wanting to boost their confidence…
Male celebrities such as Simon Cowell and Robbie Williams have been open about their use of aesthetic tweakments in recent years. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there has been a 337 percent increase in “Brotox” (aka Botox for men) injections over the past decade. Closer to home, around 10 percent of the million Brits a year who have cosmetic procedures are now male, including myself. That’s according to the marketplace and search site RightClinic.com. The market is certainly changing – or growing. And at our clinic, we’ve certainly seen a big shift in trends. When it comes to aesthetics treatments, us guys are no longer shy! And if you’re a guy like me, and you’re worried about ageing, or you want to accentuate your face’s masculinity, there are plenty of non-surgical fixes at hand…
What is male contouring? When we speak of facial contours, we’re referring to features and structural outlines, such as jawlines, chins, cheeks, and brows. As we mature, it’s natural for these contours to lose definition. This is because our skin produces less collagen. With less collagen, skin weakens and thins, and can slowly sag. This leads to fine lines and wrinkles, too. However, many contouring concerns could also be down to genetics. Not all of us are blessed with Brad Pitt’s square jaw or Robert Pattison’s razorsharp cheekbones (damn!). Weak jawlines, double chins and rounded cheekbones are things many of us guys are born with, and these can become more prominent as we age, too. Non-surgical male contouring procedures typically involve two types of treatment: injectables and thread lifts. Injectables, such as Hyaluronic Acid Fillers (Juvederm, MaiLi are popular brands), add instant volume and plumpness to treated areas. Some fillers give you a double whammy by stimulating the production of collagen too. Other injectables, such as Lanluma, even work exclusively by building up collagen fibres deep within the skin. Final results take a couple of months to appear, but they’re completely natural and worth waiting for.
The other popular injectable option are Botulinum Toxin muscle-relaxing injections, more commonly known by the brand name Botox. Or, as the buzz word has become for guys, “Brotox”. These temporarily freeze the muscles beneath the skin, preventing them from contracting. Fine lines and wrinkles are instantly diminished with “Brotox”. These injections are VERY popular with guys. However, results generally only last several months so regular top-ups should be expected. A lot of our clients combine Botulinum Toxin injections with other treatments in order to achieve a truly optimal outcome. Think about it. Hyaluronic Acid fillers add volume and plumpness, and “Brotox” diminishes wrinkles.

For many blokes, it’s a winning combo! For slightly more advanced cases of ageing – or weakening skin – thread lifts are extremely safe and effective. Procedures involve a thread being placed under the skin in strategic points. When pulled, the threads tighten the skin and create a lifting effect, restoring a person’s facial contours to their former glories. It may sound uncomfortable, but after a very short while, patients don’t notice them at all! The threads themselves are typically made of polylactic acid, which is naturally absorbed by the skin over time. Once the effect is lost, a patient may decide they want a repeat treatment. Again, results are very natural looking. And safe too, with minimal downtime. Unlike most surgery!
The masculine touch As I said earlier though, male contouring is not always about reversing ageing worries. Plenty of guys simply want to enhance the masculinity of their features. That’s very common in business, or men who work in media. It’s perhaps little coincidence that many of our male clients have busy city jobs, especially guys in their 30s and 40s. Psychological studies have shown that first impressions matter in the business world. As well as smart dress sense and a natural air of confidence - facial features can play their part, too. Attributes perceived as ‘masculine’, such as a square jaw (we call that a ‘Texas Jaw’) or pronounced cheekbones can not only convey a sense of power to the outside world, they can also instil confidence in the person themselves. Masculinising features and adding definition to contours is something we’re asked about a fair bit now. Again, reshaping and accentuating features is very much achievable with Hyaluronic Acid fillers. Using filler products specially formulated for the smaller facial areas, a skilled and qualified doctor is able to reshape noses, square off jawlines and enhance cheekbones. In fact, I’d have to say that our own Medical Director Dr Liakas and our whole medical team are absolute masters when it comes to these sorts of treatments.

Male contouring often involves combining treatments, too. I already mentioned how “Brotox” often teams up well with various fillers. Our own ‘Masculine Max Face Contouring’ for Men is a combination treatment plan, which is unique to each of our clients. Depending on a person’s goals, the doctor will discuss with them the best methods for helping them emphasise and strengthen their facial contours. The general aim is always the same, though: to give them that extra step ahead in life, be it in the workplace or in the social arena. The high-flyer package deal, so to speak.

Personal experiences And all that leads quite nicely on to me, really. Although, I’ve spoken about male contouring in general, you may want to hear a little about my own experiences. My name is Stephen (hello!). I freelance as a copywriter and content specialist for Vie Aesthetics, but I first discovered the clinic as a client a few years ago. I was in my mid 30s and working for a very well-known global organisation, specialising in world records. In fact, I was the company’s public face of videogaming, and was often appearing on stage and screen alongside gamers, celebrities and YouTubers, most all of whom were considerably younger than me. And quite cool, too!
For a while, I had already noticed that I was losing definition around my cheeks and jawline before I began the job. I had felt increasingly self-conscious as I headed towards my 40s. Dr Liakas explained that my concerns were due to a loss of volume in my upper cheeks area, causing the skin to sag below. An early onset of jowls, essentially. My nasolabial folds were also becoming quite deep, which was both genetic (they were also fairly pronounced) and due to ageing. Nasolabial folds are the grooves that run from the nose to mouth.
I don’t think it’s unusual for guys to be self-conscious about these things in this day and age. I certainly am! Dr Liakas recommended a treatment to me called Ellansé, which was new at the time. It’s an injectable filler, that not only instantly adds volume to treated areas but stimulates the production of collagen inside the skin. That means its results continue to improve in the weeks after treatment, with the outcome peaking at around three months but lasting for many months more.
Ellansé worked wonders for me. It gave me a gentle, subtle and very natural “lifting” effect. Not enough for people to say “hey, have you had something done,” but certainly enough to make myself look noticeably refreshed and revitalised. It’s also helped to keep my skin fairly plump and smooth, especially for my age.
Now just into my early 40s, I get a top-up of Ellansé every year (usually around every 10 months), just to maintain results. Recently, I added a syringe of hyaluronic acid filler in my temples to gently lift the brow and eye area too, as Ellansé is less effective here. Again, I’m still only on one syringe each, and am very happy with my results. Maintaining a very good home skincare regimen is also crucial to maintaining and optimising. That’s my tip for the day! It may come as little surprise that I’m not the only guy at Vie Aesthetics who occasionally enjoys a “tweakment”. Our male doctors and also Richard, who is our Business Director, all have their regular tweakments too. Richard recently tried MaiLi Filler to add definition to his jawline. Results all round have been very impressive! In Richard’s case, he says his concerns were brought about by the natural ageing process.

As he explains: “I was in the office one day and Dr Liakas pointed out to me that my jawline wasn’t as strong as it should be anymore. This was especially true in the far corners of the jaw, where the bone reaches up to the ears. My jawline was almost getting lost in my neck, so it was something I was definitely keen to address. I don’t think it’s unusual for guys to be selfconscious about these things in this day and age. I certainly am.
Dr Liakas recommended a new Hyaluronic Acid filler called MailLi, which we had just introduced to the clinic. If something bothers you and knocks your confidence, why not do something about it? That goes for all us guys!”

The much anticipated awards ceremony took place via Zoom, of course, although that didn't make it any less spectacular! Here is how it went... At 4pm on the dot, we sat down on the velvet green lounge chairs in our Harley Street Clinic, patiently waiting, refreshing the Zoom link eagerly. Finally the awards ceremony began, with 10 Years Younger host Cherry Healey presenting the awards. Cherry looked as gorgeous and glamorous as ever! Snaps of our fellow finalists in their glitzy ballgowns and smart black ties began surfacing with the hashtag #AestheticAwards2021. We joined in of course! Cherry announced one by one the finalists and winners of each category, with interludes from speakers representing the award that was being presented.

We shot out of our seats with excitement, our Reception team really are incredible, we couldn’t have been more proud! Next up, came The Get Harley Award for Medical Aesthetic Practitioner of The Year. Our Medical Director Dr Ioannis Liakas had been shortlisted! She announced the commended, highly commended and winners but Dr Liakas was not mentioned. Although he is a true superstar, were not disheartened. Our competition was amazing and we were just proud to be finalists! The final category in which we had been shortlisted came around towards the end of the ceremony.
We cannot express how grateful we are to have been shortlisted in THE Aesthetics Awards with The Aesthetics Journal UK. We are so glad that we plucked up the courage to enter these awards what did we have to lose! Lesson officially learned… You’ve got to be in it to win it! MY NEW (NOSE) JOB By OLIVIA KUMAR Many men and women struggle with at least one part of their body or face in their lifetime. It causes us to feel self-conscious, unhappy, stressed and the self-criticism can be burdening. I have struggled with the appearance of my nose since I was a teenager. In fact, I even got bullied for my nose many times. Negative comments can have a major impact on the way you feel about yourself. Of course, we are responsible for our own happiness and acceptance of ourselves. However, when you feel unhappy with a particular part of your face and somebody else confirms that there is something wrong with it, it makes you feel terrible.
I really believe that if you are not happy with something, you need to do something about it. In this case I really needed to take action. I was tired of walking by a shop window or a mirror and it ruining my day because my nose looked too big. Little things like that would affect my entire day and I would think about it for hours. Whenever I went to an event and people took pictures, I tried to hide from the cameras. I would get annoyed at people for taking photos of me when I was unaware because I didn't want my nose to look huge in it. I almost hid from myself in a way.

Raising Autism Awareness: A discussion with Anna Kennedy OBE by Louise Evans

Public speaker, presenter, Founder of her own charity and proud holder of an OBE, Anna Kennedy is a pretty amazing woman who is making a real difference in our society. Her charity Anna Kennedy Online aims to raise autism awareness across the country in a number of unconventional and progressive ways. This includes hosting annual events such as The Autism Hero Awards and Autism's Got Talent. I was lucky enough to speak with Anna Kennedy via video call, to discuss how taking action on things you are passionate about has been a part of her journey and how change can affect those living with autism in ways many people wouldn't realise. How did you come about starting Anna Kennedy Online? As a parent with two autistic children, Angelo (28) and Patrick (31), I had a number of people reaching out to me for advice on schools and rest bite and just general advice. I created the charity back in 2009 in order to be there to support other parents, as somebody who already had the T-shirt and had overcome specific hurdles. We have a number of incredible role models within the charity. Our volunteers are amazing and either have a child on the spectrum or have Autism themselves. This makes it really special as everybody is there because they are passionate and want to help. How does the idea of change affect people with autism and how has the pandemic impacted this? People with autism are very different from each other. However, many adults and children who are autistic do thrive on routine. For my son Patrick, who has Aspergers, the idea of working from home has been incredibly difficult because it is different to what he is used to. Thankfully, his employer has been incredibly flexible and has made adjustments to suit him. I would encourage employers to look at the different ways they can ensure their employees who are on the autistic spectrum, feel comfortable and in the right headspace to do the job to their fullest capabilities.

Making changes but also planning for, and accommodating, change in a workplace can make all the difference. Certainly during the pandemic, which has been difficult for everybody. The lockdowns have disrupted everybody’s everyday routine and even more so for people

living with autism. In some cases the pandemic has completely thrown people off their routine, yet for some, staying at home will have allowed them to form a type of comfort bubble. Regardless, the pandemic will have taken a toll on many people's mental health.
Since 2009, have you noticed a change in the way people living with Autism are diagnosed or treated by society? Unfortunately, not much has taken a turn since we started back in 2009, people are still struggling with diagnosis. We conducted a survey that found people are waiting 5 years before even being diagnosed. With COVID-19 this has declined even more. So much so that people are looking to the private sector for diagnosis. Recently I saw some parents who have waited for 15+ months just trying to place their son in a school that is right for him. And he has still not found the right place for his needs. Although things haven’t improved as we might have hoped since we started the charity, I believe that we must always keep banging the drum to get people to listen and to make change. Are there any specific projects you are working on at the moment? The '#Take5' Campaign is one that focuses on caring for the mental health of carers and encouraging them to take 5 for themselves- they are like the backbone of society, yet tend to go under-appreciated. Without carers, where would people who need that support be? A current project I’m working on at the moment is a really important petition titled 'Who will look after our children when we are not around?'. The aim is to push the government to ensuring that social health care is adequate enough to reassure parents and carers that their children will continue to be cared for when they pass away. I will be speaking with the healthcare minister to discuss this petition and hopefully we will see some change.

I recently worked with Katie Price on the ‘Katie Price: Harvey and Me’ documentary, which follows Katie and Harvey during a crucial year marking him turning 18 years old. The Documentary follows how they navigate the transition, which Katie found more difficult than she had anticipated. I assisted in helping her navigate the transition of Harvey taking his place as an adult in a world than can be unkind and unforgiving for those with living with autism. Harvey’s autism is highly challenging and there would be a high possibility that without the correct assessments, he could be sectioned. It is all too often that individuals with autism are cast aside into mental health units which do not provide them with the support that they truly need. I always say to parents, "Arm yourself with knowledge" because it is power.

Can you tell me about the upcoming Autism Hero Awards? The charity is widely about support and offering the resources people will need. I am lucky to be able to speak on Women’s Radio each week, giving those who may not normally get the chance to speak the opportunity. Even if it’s about a business they have set up, just giving them a platform is what I am keen to help with. This is why we do the Autism Hero Awards: to celebrate people who go the extra mile within the autism community. Whether that be a business, a carer, a parent or even a journalist who has written particularly well and respectfully about people who are on the spectrum. The awards are fantastic, we have a red carpet and a three course meal and it is a great evening to really celebrate the autism community. This year's awards are going to be a compilation of 2020 and 2021, as we carried all nominations over to this year. We have a selection of distinguished judges who select a winner out of the the nominations we receive for each of the 12 categories, including the: 'Sibling of the year award' , 'Special recognition award' and 'Support Group of the year award'. They ALWAYS ask if they can have more than one winner because the nominations are always just incredible! We are so grateful for people and companies like Vie Aesthetics, who sponsor our event.
What does the future look like for Anna Kennedy Online? My goal is for the charity to eventually become a foundation in the future. The charity has changed so many people’s lives, whether that is for our ambassadors, our champions or performers, we have given them a springboard to gain the confidence and feel like “I can do this!”.

Antioxidants are basically substances that protect against oxidative damage caused by environmental factors such as UV rays and pollution. They are important in skincare because of their ability to limit production of free radicals and to neutralise them when they come into contact with your skin. Free radicals, which stem from everyday pollutants like household cleaners, as well as our own cell metabolism, are responsible for the depletion of collagen in our skin. This breakdown of collagen can result in fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin and dark spots.

Vitamin C Vitamin C, also known as L-Ascorbic

There are many antioxidants that can come through your diet as well as skincare regime and many have multiple benefits aside from their antio
Vitamin C Acid, is a highly effective antioxidant
that protects against free radicals by neutralising them. Vitamin C helps to regenerate the skin and repair broken or damaged cells. Vitamin C is not only one of the most effective antioxidants, but is also a key ingredient that aids anti-aging. The high acidity of Vitamin C means that, when applied, the skin is prompted to naturally repair itself by quickly producing collagen and elastin- structural proteins which keep skin healthy.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E comes in many forms. The term actually refers to a group of compounds which have great antioxidant benefits. Vitamin E is an incredibly protective, naturally occurring component in our skin. However, when our skin is damaged by external aggressors like UV rays, our natural vitamin E decreases. Vitamin E helps with cellular restoration which, not only makes it a great protective antioxidant, but a great healing product for skin concerns like eczema. Vitamin E helps with blood circulation which makes it a great anti-inflammatory, as well as this it helps to support your immune system. Vitamin E tends to come in oily serum or cream forms which may not be suitable for oily skin types as the heavy product may clog pores and cause break outs. We would recommend the ZO Skin Health 10% Vitamin C serum and the Alumier MD Vitamin C & E serum. Typically, most vitamin C serums come paired with Vitamin E as the two vitamins work together to recycle the skin in a way that maximises the effects of both products.
Retinol
Retinol is a form of Vitamin A, an ingredient which speeds up cellular turnover and collagen production. Retinol is commonly known as a correctional antioxidant because of its ability to accelerate skin renewal. Retinol helps to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and to reduce the appearance of scarring and pigmentation. When used with Vitamin C, the effects of retinol are maximised because of the complementary benefits both products have on the renewal of skin cells and collagen production. Retinol tends to be used by people over the age of 25 as this is when collagen production starts to decrease.
Resveratrol
Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant and also a great ally in the fight against the effects of ageing on your skin. Resveratrol is a dual antioxidant as it protects against free radicals from external aggressors, but also helps produce naturally occurring antioxidants in your skin cells. It is a preventative measure to protect your skin against negative environmental stresses. Glutathione
One of the most powerful antioxidants is Glutathione, because it is made up of a combination of amino acids which naturally occur in every cell in the body. Its immense ability to fight off free radicals means it helps in the fight against ageing and treating some skin diseases. Glutathione also has other benefits for your skin’s appearance: it helps to brighten the skin’s pigmentation and lighten dark spots; it enhances energy production and boosts your immune system. HOW MOVING COUNTRIES HELPED TRANSFORM MY LIFE By Leah Shermin When people used to speak about self-love, I never really understood what they meant. Do you? Does anyone? I am lucky enough now to find myself standing at the top of the mountain looking back at the path that it took for me to get here, the journey it took for me to find self-love for myself. Growing up, I was always the main character in my own life, I have always been bubbly and confident- two traits that can sometimes be mistaken for happiness. As a teenager and young adult, I always had a busy life with lots of plans, was surrounded by my friends and family and was travelling all over the place for my job as a Makeup Artist for L’Oreal Lux. It might sound exciting, glamorous and social, but in reality, amongst it all, I felt incredibly lonely.

I worked in some of the UK’s biggest airport terminals which made my working hours unsociable, to say the least. I would find myself overcompensating for the time that I lost with my friends by socialising even when I really didn’t feel like it. It was draining. I decided that I didn’t like the way things were, I yearned for change. So, I took action.
If you don’t like something, you should feel confident enough to be able to change it. At the age of 23, I booked a one-way ticket to Dubai. It was one of the scariest but most liberating moments as I stepped on that plane, ready to see what my new life would have to offer. Going to Dubai was me taking control of my life, identifying the change that needed to happen and acting on it. I now had the opportunity to do whatever I wanted and not to the benefit of anybody else. It was all just for me. Having this freedom changed my mindset completely, I now have the flexibility and time to do things for myself just because I wanted to. I no longer had to squeeze plans into my work and social schedule. my schedule existed purely for what I felt I needed that day. I feel that it was having this freedom that brought me the positive mindset that I have today.
I had the space to realise that if you do not put yourself first, whose life are you really living? I realised that having self-love is not being selfish and doesn’t mean you neglect your relationships with people around you. It means living your own life the way you want to live it rather than trying to fulfil others’ wants and needs.
My new goal was waiting for me back in England, here at Vie Aesthetics. I always knew I had a passion for working in make-up, so when I discovered a position at Vie Aesthetics for a new makeup Artist, I was over the moon. I am a real believer of what is meant to be will be. The whole reason I love doing makeup is because of the freedom and empowerment that comes with it, I can help my clients feel confident, find their own self-love and channel their own empowered through expression with makeup.

I never thought I would discover my passion whilst being a new mum, but that's exactly what happened. Being a first-time mummy, I pretty much had come to a standstill with my career, juggling bottles, nappies & cuddles became my focus in life. But then I was lucky enough to come across Vie Aesthetics. When I met Vicky, the CEO of Vie Aesthetics, I felt very inspired and comfortable at the same time. It was for me so easy to bond both on a personal & professional level.
They say that if you want to change something, you better take action now. And this is what I did. I was offered an opportunity to work in a thriving, buzzing & stunning clinic amongst an excellent team of individuals. I felt so honoured at the time! It came at a perfect time as I was pushing myself to find my feet again and find something that I truly enjoyed doing. I have always been passionate about the aesthetics & beauty industry. I went to beauty college when I left school and then moved on to front-of-house roles within the Beauty Sector. Interacting with potential customers and clients is something I have always been something I have enjoyed doing, I get great satisfaction at brightening up people’s days even how big or small the gesture.
Ultimately that is what our aim is here at Vie Aesthetics, making people feel good on the inside & radiate that from the outside.
How my development grew? I pretty much adapted into my role straight away and built a great relationship with my team and clients. Vie Aesthetics has helped me on an internal level in more than many ways. My self-confidence after birthing a baby I think all first-time mums can relate it’s very easy to lose your self-esteem, Vie instantly reimbursed my self-love because every shift I worked gave me purpose and a goal to work towards. Putting a smile on people’s faces helped putting a smile back on my own and we love to promote self-love, we all forget how important it is to be kind to ourselves always remind yourself of how far you have come and not focus solely so much on how far you need to go. The power of now is what really keeps us alive.

In my appraisal meetings, I was given the opportunity to be asked what direction I would like to head towards and what inspires me here the most. I explained that I would love the opportunity to eventually become a Beauty Therapist here at Vie Aesthetics and perform treatments. My peers and CEO Vicky, said “so why not…? Let’s do it” and then for that moment it felt surreal that not only I was given the green light but the fact my team believed in me. So, from that moment on I did as much as I could to support the Beauty team to get a deeper insight in how they function day to day with clients, appointments in which our Vie therapist begun to delegate me more beauty related tasks to assist them with rooms and equipment and ultimately help the day run smoother in between clients. Such as helping with skin routines, emails, arranging skin care packages and following up feedback with those clients on behalf of the therapists.
My mental health, knowing that I have a 24-hour support line no matter the situation but most importantly having that support network that I feel comfortable in approaching with any life event, I am able to talk openly and honestly with my peers and always have a positive impact resulting in me feeling instantly better.
Two months later, I had my next 1:1 with the CEO, in which I was given the opportunity to go complete my VTCT level 2, 3 and 4 courses externally which I am now in process of achieving. I am so excited to expand my knowledge and join the Beauty Team and build up my very own client base. Vie Aesthetics is constantly growing, we are expanding bigger and better every day as well as our team being phenomenal, I feel incredibly privileged to be a part of it. I look forward to introducing myself a lot more around the clinic to all our clients and new faces.

Fat Dissolving Injections
How does Aqualyx work? Aqualyx injections are a significantly less invasive, nonsurgical alternative to traditional liposuction. This procedure aids the elimination of stubborn fat in both the face and body through the digestion of fat. These fat dissolving injections are administered into the target area and liquify the fat cells. This enables the lipids to be flushed out naturally and permanently via your body’s lymphatic system. The results are effective, quick, and minimally invasive.
Can Aqualyx be used for weight loss? Aqualyx is a body contouring and skin tightening procedure. It is not a weight-loss treatment. It is a great way for reducing fat in specific areas of the body or face, though.
Is Aqualyx suitable for men and women? Yes, it works for men and women alike. Many of our clients are men and find this an easy, risk-free and affordable nonsurgical solution to get rid of belly, “love handles” and chest fat pockets or “man boobs”.
What are the side effects of Aqualyx? Some of the potential side effects of Aqualyx may include skin irritation, redness, swelling and tenderness in the treated areas. Who cannot have Aqualyx? You may not be suitable for Aqualyx Fat Dissolving Injections if you are pregnant or lactating, or suffer from lipodystrophy, or various pathological conditions, such as auto-immune diseases.
Are results from Aqualyx Injections permanent? Yes, results with Aqualyx are long-lasting. The treatment destroys localised body fat cells for good. However, note that it won’t stop you from storing new fat in the future. The remaining fat cells can grow with weight gain, so we always stress the importance of following a healthy lifestyle in order to maintain a stable weight following treatment.
Are Aqualyx injections painful? During the Aqualyx treatment, an anaesthetic is normally mixed into the solution prior to the injection thus providing greater comfort and a fairly pain-free procedure. As with all treatments that involve needles, the injections may sting for a few seconds but overall, it is a well-taken treatment. What areas can be treated using Aqualyx? Aqualyx is designed to be used locally and the injections are effective in treating almost all small deposits of fat. The most popular treatment areas are on the chin, thigh, hips, arms, stomach and lower abdomen, “man-boobs” and knees. Aqualyx is used to treat pockets of fat which are challenging to remove via exercise and diet alone thus, it is important to note that it is not a weight loss solution. The Injections work by dissolving localised fat but the added bonus is that this procedure achieves tightening your skin from the inside too. Hence, the bulges that bother you start going down and eventually can disappear and your skin becomes smoother. And the results look natural and are long-lasting. Please note that results vary between individuals. How long does it take for Aqualyx results to show? The number of Aqualyx treatments required varies depending on the size of the fatty deposit being treated. As such, it is a safe, effective fat dissolving injection treatment which reduces fat cells in the target area via non-invasive means. Unlike surgical procedures such as liposuction, there are limited risks to Aqualyx. Thus, providing much safer solutions for our clients. What is the aftercare for Aqualyx? I think many would agree with me that age does take a toll on you in varying ways. As a fifty-something -year-old female, I noticed that not only had the years increased, but so did the pounds. Historically each year, I would put on weight in the winter (winder padding!) and strategically lose it during the summer months. However, as the years went by, I lost the balance and I seemed to be putting on more weight during the winter and losing less in the summer. Last year, I noticed myself gaining weight throughout all months; both summer and winter months. To say these past few months have been weird By is an understatement. When COVID-19 hit, I was in Year 12 studying Biology, Maths, Chemistry and Psychology in Sixth Form as part of my A-Levels. At those times, the only worries I had were end-of-topic exams and persevering through the school year with my classmates. I, as most people I’m sure, was taken by surprise when we moved into a stage of lockdown and normal life as we knew it was put on hold. This pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on the lives of everyone. For students and younger individuals such as myself, education, socialising and other formative experiences had been disrupted. The idea of lockdown was so new to me; what did it mean for my studies? How long would this phase of isolation last and what would the impact be on my future?

Naturally, my school life changed the most; my lessons were no longer face-to-face and social interaction with my friends was reduced to almost nothing, except weekly FaceTime and video calls. The dreadful Zoom calls had begun, and education was now refocused online. Sure, working and studying from home has its upsides. From watching Netflix behind the laptop while muted on zoom, working in your pyjamas or eating while attending your lessons, it hasn’t all been bad. Nevertheless, I found myself struggling to keep motivated, seeking for new pastimes as I was falling into a phase of stagnation and inaction.
I felt as though I was existing within a movie; I suddenly had to worry about wearing face masks, singing happy birthday to myself as I washed my hands, and constantly refrain from coughing in public. The whole notion of lockdown felt surreal, causing the lifestyle that I was pursuing to be ripped apart and thus, be changed entirely.

The Zoom classes encouraged a feeling of isolation, and the nature of the lessons lessened the interactive learning that I was used to for so many years. The uncertainty surrounding my A-Levels and the unbelievably limited information I had about my education in general, is what stressed me out the most.
I have always been interested in the world of business and in how operations adopt strategies and theories to grow and expand. Due to this, I was looking to become part of a working team. I was lucky enough to gain an opportunity to work at Vie Aesthetics; I am now a Marketing Assistant working alongside the Marketing Team.
During this time, the stress I was experiencing started to manifest in various ways; I felt unmotivated, less willing to socialise with both family and friends and fell into a repetitive, monotonic routine which continuously consisted of Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime.
Since the start of my school career, I’ve had a creative mind and appreciated the process of transforming an idea into an innovative finished product. Being able to witness the behind-the-scenes work at Vie Aesthetics and the hard-working ethos of the Vie Team has been extremely eye-opening and insightful. I am excited to utilise all the skills I have accumulated for my Business Management, Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship studies at university.
Lockdown restrictions were eased, and my social life began improving; normality was now a realistic concept for many of us.
I quickly learned that feeling wracked with guilt if I didn’t feel motivated was exhausting and unproductive. Instead, I decided to do something about it; I changed my perception of lockdown and isolation and focused on the foreseeable future and the new, upcoming stages of my life. After many months of not knowing what was going to happen with my A-Levels, I was finally finished with school. Forever. I must say, the ending did not feel satisfactory, but I was prepared to move on and begin the next chapter of what seemed to be my forever-changed life.

As I am about begin my studies at university, I will continue working alongside the Marketing Team at Vie Aesthetics, further developing my abilities and gaining a true understanding of how a business can develop into a successful, ever-changing entity. As I look back on these past months, I am aware that the full implications of how the past year has brought about change in me are still unfolding. Many of us have struggled throughout this pandemic, however, I truly believe that there is a lesson to be learned.
For some, the pandemic has been surprisingly enriching; their creativity has grown, and they have focused on their health and self-development more. It has allowed us to reflect on ourselves, our goals and recognise what is truly important in life. The most valuable aspect of having more time is that it allowed us to prioritise our relationships. This includes our family, our colleagues and our friends; the absence of being with people has been one of the most chilling, challenging parts of lockdown. However, I have discovered that we are all capable of moving past obstacles that are put in front of us and are able to adapt to changes wherever needed.
It is always possible to bounce back from setbacks and instigate change; if you want to pursue a new career, start a new hobby or change your lifestyle completely, you can do it!

SWERVE SOCIAL BURNOUT Your body clock likes routine and late nights can throw your body out of sync. Try to go to bed around the same time most evenings to help restore your body back to normal service.
INVEST IN CIRCADIAN LIGHTING
Circadian lighting systems are specifically designed to use feedback from the environment to control the colour and intensity of the light at particular times. Blue wavelengths are beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction times and mood, but can have a disruptive effect at night. These can be controlled throughout the day and set to transition towards darkness in the evening.
SWITCH OFF YOUR LIGHTS Light is the main influence on your body clock, and looking at the bright light of a laptop screen in the evening can disrupt its natural balance. KEEP COOL Keeping your bedroom cool can help to bring your core temperature down while signalling to your body that it is time for sleep. The optimal bedroom temperature for a good night’s sleep is below 21 degrees celsius (70 degrees fahrenheit). EAT AT REGULAR MEAL TIMES Breakfast, lunch and dinner are signals to our body to fire up our metabolism and fuel up during the active hours of the day. Eating erratically can confuse this signal and knock our body clock off course.
