Every child has the right to complete their education, but according to DISE 2016–17 and the RGI Census Population Projection 2016, 46.24 million children were out of school in 2016. The reality is that many families residing in urban slums and rural villages still lack the resources to send their children to school—from a lack of infrastructure to societal pressures like gender bias. This leads to children either dropping out or never enrolling in school in the first place. But this must stop, as children need to grow up in a healthy and positive environment, and education has a major role to play in that. Education helps increase one’s knowledge, develop their potential, and lead one toward becoming more empathetic and socially adept. Education also helps pave the path toward employment opportunities and eventually a stable job. Moving past daily wages helps children break the generational cycle of poverty and illiteracy. Attending school gives one exposure and awareness, so children from all socioeconomic backgrounds must have access to a high-quality education during their formative years. Initiated by the Shiv Nadar Foundation, VidyaGyan was established in 2009. VidyaGyan has two campuses that are dedicated to identifying and fostering talented students from economically disadvantaged rural areas. This initiative is one of the best models for developing rural educational leadership and management in the nation. The program, which has more than 1300 students, receives more than 2.5 lakh applications each year from 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh (encompassing all districts in U.P.). The children who apply hail from families whose household income is less than one lakh per year. VidyaGyan is a rural development program that continues to nurture students with a lot of potential and promise.
