PRODUCERS NOTES This edition of the VIDF marks our tenth anniversary.

From March 12th to the 21st, Vancouver companies Mascall Dance, Kokoro Dance, Flamenco Rosario, and Out Innerspace will share our stages with Toronto’s Peggy Baker and Toronto Dance Theatre, Kitt Johnson from Denmark, Black Grace from New Zealand, LAFA & Artists from Taiwan, and Bill Shannon, Michael Sakamoto, and Ronald K. Brown’s Evidence Dance Company from the United States. We could not have brought this stellar line-up of artists to the Roundhouse and Playhouse stages without the generous support and knowledgeable guidance of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad who are our co-presenters for these shows. In particular, we want to thank Robert Kerr, Program Director for the Cultural Olympiad, for embracing all aspects of BC’s arts community in the past three years of invigorating performance activities.

The Cultural Olympiad is a once in a lifetime experience for most of us — a celebration of the contemporary imagination. We have worked hard to bring you outstanding dance artists from around the world at affordable prices. One of the ways we have cut costs is to not have a reserved seating ticket system which can add as much as $11 to the cost of each ticket. After filling out a contact info form and paying an annual $3 fee, patrons become VIDF Society members with voting privileges. VIDF members are given a button that allows entry to the performing areas.

A Message from the Premier As the Premier of the province of British Columbia, it is my pleasure to join with the Vancouver International Dance Festival Society and the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad in welcoming everyone to the 2010 Vancouver International Dance Festival.

Over the coming weeks, the Lower Mainland will come alive in celebration of the local, national and international dance festival. The Festival will feature performances by Kokoro Dance, Mascall Dance, Kitt Johnson and more. With amazing performances, master classes and workshops, I am sure that attendees of all ages will enjoy the festival and celebrate the artistic and cultural spirit of the world.

I would like to acknowledge all of the organizers, volunteers and sponsors for their hard work and contributions they have dedicated to ensuring the success of the 2010 Vancouver International Dance Festival.

Art Exhibit by Jim Cummins (I, Braineater) Welcome to the wonderfully dark and twisted world of Jim Cummins, previously known as Canada’s legendary punk rock icon I, Braineater.

How to describe his work? Think Addams Family goth plus a good dose of carnival freak show and Betty Page style titillation.

Jim’s 1979 Braineaters album was a punk manifesto, featuring guest appearances by Buck Cherry of The Modernettes and Art Bormann (aka Art Bergmann) of The K-Tels and The Young Canadians. Jim’s live musical performances often reflect his bizarre visual esthetic with extra large props and stunning light shows. His music videos still appear today on MuchMusic and Bravo.

Jim has designed album artwork for many bands including The Pointed Sticks, Skinny Puppy, Itch, Pure, and Dog Eat Dog. His “graphic paintings” have been shown in more than 40 art exhibits and 100 performance art shows in Vancouver, Toronto, Seattle, Montreal, and Amsterdam over the last 30 years. Jim and his paintings have made a number of recent appearances at the resurrected Luv-Affair / Futureshapes / Bowie tribute parties which continue to celebrate the punky new wave romanticism of the 80’s.

Vanessa Richards, born in Vancouver, is an interdisciplinary artist with a foundation in writing, music, live art, theatre, and collaboration. Choreographer: Barbara Bourget Dancers: Barbara Bourget, Carolyn Chan, Ziyian Kwan, Ellen Luchkow, Molly McDermott, Jennifer McKinley, Kristine Richmond L.S.D. is a deeply evocative and provocative performance investigating the themes of love, sex and death through the filter of Japanese butoh. Butoh and Flamenco share a desire to reveal the passionate soul of the dancer. In 2011, Kokoro Dance’s L.S.D. will be merged with Flamenco Rosario’s L.S.D. to create a full evening work incorporating the performers and creators from both companies.

MASCALL DANCE

Mascall Dance (Vancouver) 8 pm, March 12 – 13, Roundhouse > $35/$25

Choreographer: Jennifer Mascall Dancers: Brandy Baybutt, Clinton Draper, Sasha Klapkiw, Ziyian Kwan, Alisoun Payne Premiering at the VIDF 2010 festival, Mascall Dance introduces The White Spider which features an inventive mix of mountaineering acrobatics with contemporary dance to recreate the gripping ascent of Eiger Mountain – one of the greatest Alpine challenges in the world. Drawing inspiration from Heinrich Harrer’s book, Jennifer Mascall incorporates innovative aerial dance and moving stage terrain to examine the fragile line between life and death.

Five performers climb and rappel in dance across the shifting walls of an abstract mountain set. Mountaineering equipment allows the five to freely transcend gravity as they create a delicate web of movements to reenact the mission’s crux – an ice field with snow-filled cracks which resemble the legs of a spider. Audiences can vicariously experience the terror of the climb as this performance is charged with thrills and intensity.

The dance is highly physical, thoughtful, and poignant.

Choreographer, Dancer, Artistic Director: Rosario Ancer Dancers: Nanako Aramaki, Alice Gerbrecht Flamenco Rosario explores the themes of love, sex, and death through the filter of Spanish Flamenco. The fiery passion of Rosario Ancer’s choreography and music by Victor Kolstee showcase Vancouver’s foremost Flamenco company at its best.

In 2011, Flamenco Rosario’s L.S.D. will be merged with L.S.D. of Kokoro Dance to create a full evening work incorporating the performers and creators from both companies.

Choreographer/Dancer: Kitt Johnson Composer: Sture Ericson Kitt Johnson, one of Denmark’s most renowned choreographers dances the breadth of life in Rankefod, a solo piece that narrates the evolution of humankind from primordial slime to present day form. Johnson transforms like a piece of human origami through metamorphoses of reptile, insect, animal and finally, human – to an electronic soundscape of a natural world. Critics hail her as a “magical dance animal who continuously spellbinds the eye”.

In 2009, Rankefod was nominated for a Canadian performing arts prize — the DORA — as best dance performance of the season.

A mesmerizing dance experience that captivates your memory, Rankefod promises to be one of the most riveting performances you will ever see. It has a strange, haunting beauty that strikes a chord in all who have witnessed it.

Choreography: Christopher House in collaboration with the performers Dancers: Alana Elmer, Yuichiro Inoue, Pulga Muchochoma, Brodie Stevenson, Kaitlin Standeven, Matt Waldie, Naishi Wang, Sarah Wasik, Linnea Wong Christopher House’s 2008 work Dis/(sol/ve)r, a co-production with Canada’s National Arts Centre, was created in close collaboration with nine wonderful performers. Influenced by House’s work with iconic choreographer Deborah Hay, the powerful presence of the performers is the animating force in its choreographic structure. Dis/(sol/ve)r examines the beauty of uncertainty in our personal encounters, and looks at desire, hope and the ephemeral traces of the loved one. House draws inspiration from particle theory, and creates a movement palette that is convulsive, tender, percussive, and joyful. Dis/(sol/ve)r conjures a rich emotional world.

LAFA & Artists (Taiwan) 8 pm, March 18 – 19, Roundhouse > $35/$25

Choreographer: Bulareyaung Pagarlava Dancers: Fang-Yi Sheu, Sih-Wei Luo, Pao-Su Chiang, Wei-Ming Wang, Yen-Chen Liu, Chien-Kuei Chang, Che-Lun Hsu, Chen-Wei Hsu Taiwan’s LAFA & Artists stages a lively triple bill led by two renowned figures in Taiwanese dance, Fang-Yi Sheu, a former principal dancer with the Martha Graham Company and decorated choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava.

Single Room is an intensely passionate performance by Sheu as she dances in a duet with a large table against a brilliantlylit white screen to depict a story of a struggling relationship between two lovers. Sheu showcases her powerhouse femme fatale qualities as her limbs become alive as shadows.

37 Arts was created during a residency at the world renowned Baryshnikov Arts Center and with a highly humorous atmosphere it features an iconic fast and slow-motion fight over a bottle of milk which underscores the playful and animated interaction between dancers. Choreographer Bulareyaung honors Martha Graham’s Lamentation, with a variation of the piece titled Lament. This piece is a poignant evocation of grief and features an operatic palette of movements.

Founded in 1995 by Neil Ieremia, Black Grace is an all-male dance troupe of Pacific Island and Maori descent that combines Pacific culture motifs with contemporary dance. Black Grace’s vivacious dancers perform highlights from their repertoire including three electrifying segments that represent the company at its finest.

Black Grace dancers celebrate their kinetic dexterity through thumping their chests, slapping their thighs, grunting, performing acrobatics in synchronized unison and then breaking into their lyrical vocals in sweet harmony to soft movements.

It is this sublime blend of the powerful and the graceful, of traditional and contemporary, that creates the memorable energy of Black Grace. These dancers will ignite the Playhouse stage with explosive power.

Choreographer/Dancer: Michael Sakamoto Composer and Musician: Amy Knoles Utilizing butoh movement and electro-acoustic mixology, Sacred Cow examines the essence of dance and music forms considered sacred and profane, cultured and vulgar, or authentic and superficial to uncover and express a portrait of universal spiritual experience that both considers and transcends culture, nationality, and history.

Michael Sakamoto is an interdisciplinary artist active in dance, theatre, performance and media. Composer/percussionist Amy Knoles joins him in Sacred Cow – an homage to music and dance.

This duo combines visceral movement, vast soundscapes and inventive costumes to create provocative and arresting performance.

Peggy Baker, one of the most outstanding contemporary dancers of her generation, restages her classic work Geometry of the Circle, where silent dancer Alison Denham is juxtaposed with musician Mark Brose in his wheelchair within the defined space of a circle to celebrate the dichotomy of sound and body. At the March 21 Kickstart Gala, Baker will also performs solo in earthling danced on a tipped and tilted platform—a study in distortion and mutability.

In Spatial Theory, Bill “Crutchmaster” Shannon uniquely uses rocker-bottom crutches as an extension of his body to deliver a mix of house and hip-hop dance forms infused with silent film acting and skateboard culture. A live DJ, film excerpts based on Shannon’s street work and some audience interaction are incorporated to animate the performance with devastating wit and style. Shannon, who was diagnosed with Legg-Calve-Perthes at the age of five, pioneered this extraordinary style of movement that displays impeccable timing and fluidity as he flies in dance, using one crutch for support and the other suspended in the air—spinning, stalling and gliding smoothly across the floor. Shannon defies not only gravity and balance but his condition as he leaves Presented with audiences hungry for more dance and his inspirational attitude on life.

Praised by The New York Times as “one of the most profound choreographers of his modern dance generation”, Brooklynbased Ronald K. Brown and his award-winning company Evidence, seamlessly blends fast, rhythmic movements inspired

by African dance with spoken word, modern dance and ballet for a kinetic storytelling of human experience. Rich with spiritual musings and poetic lyricism, dancers use rich movement invention to express their stories. They perform three pieces, each a journey that epitomizes the history and emotion in which Evidence is celebrated for.

The company’s premiere, Ife/My Heart was originally choreographed for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in 2005 and examines the parallel journey of three traditions towards love. The piece implores witnesses to release their hearts. Grace is an homage to God’s grace and is a journey that represents compassion. Upside Down is performed to live music by afro-beat singer Wunmi and although it begins with a premonition of community mourning, to experience Evidence is to experience the rhythmic heart Presented with and soul of Ronald K. Brown and he always leaves his audiences with a good feeling.

2010 VIDF Life Drawing Sessions The public is invited to participate in the life drawing sessions taking place March 15 to March 19 in the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall at noon daily. Sessions are FREE and no pre-registration is necessary; bring your own materials. The VIDF provides clothed/costumed dancers that will move and pose to inspire sketchers for the full hour. Participants are welcome to contribute their drawings to be displayed as part of the evolving exhibition until March 21 when they may be picked up at the Roundhouse.
