Producers Notes We are very excited to introduce our programming for the 2011 VIDF. In the following pages you will see the artists we have invited from Vancouver, Nelson, Montreal, Halifax, Seattle, Madrid, Zurich, and Munich to celebrate the art of contemporary dance through exciting performances and workshops. We invite you to join us in attending these evocative and provocative dance events during the first three weeks of March.

The 2011 VIDF will also feature a 30-year retrospective dance photography exhibition by Chris Randle, artist/audience chats led by the Vancouver Observer, free performances enabled through the sponsorship of Blenz Coffee, life drawing sessions, master classes with visiting dance artists, and VAG Offsite performances in downtown Vancouver.

After the shock of a $50,000 BC Government cut to our funding with the cessation of Direct Access Grants to professional arts festivals, we are more than ever grateful to the ongoing support from the foundations and government funding agencies, corporate and media sponsors, festival partners, and community sponsors listed in this program.

We produce the VIDF for your artistic stimulation and enjoyment and we thank you for supporting the festival through your attendance and donations.

Dance is a fascinating artistic discipline that centres on the relationship between human beings and their bodies. Through precise movements, choreographers can express profound feelings and stir our emotions.

Over more than two weeks, the Vancouver International Dance Festival offers a variety of contemporary dance shows that celebrate the beauty of this art form. It features experienced artists performing in a number of styles, including flamenco. Our Government believes in the impor-

A Message from the Mayor On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver, and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend my warmest greetings to the 2011 Vancouver International Dance Festival.

The artists are unique and so talented, it is a privilege to have them share their craft with us all. Jung-Ah and Su-Feh Choreographers, Dancers: Lee Su-Feh, Chung Jung-Ah battery opera presents a new work that is inspired by the encounter by two women with hyphens in their names: Jung-Ah and Su-Feh. By seeing and being seen by one another, the work examines the hyphenated experience of each performer and their linkage through dance. The work is a piece about the body, for the body.

Choreographer: Peter Bingham Dancers: Delia Brett, Anne Cooper, Alana Gerecke, James Gnam, Farley Johansson, Stacey Murchison, Monica Strehlke Composer: Mark Stewart EDAM is a pioneer in contact improvisation, a dance form that emphasizes flow and the cooperative exchange of weight between partners. The commitment of “the artist” to a life, a lifestyle and its consequences spawns the title life sentences... an evening of new works by choreographer Peter Bingham.

Stories told both lived and imagined fill the background of these creations.

Untitled Choreographer: James Kudelka Arts Umbrella Dance Company (AUDC) will perform a new piece by one of North America’s most innovative choreographers, world-renowned Canadian ballet choreographer James Kudelka. Established in 1985, AUDC is a Vancouver-based repertory company for select members of the school’s professional dance program. The company includes senior and apprentice ensembles that train, rehearse and perform new and innovative works by some of North America’s leading choreographers.

Four Quartets Choreographer/Dancer: Deborah Dunn This work began with the discovery of a recording of Sir Alec Guinness reading T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets. The choreography embraces Eliot’s play of imagery and abstractions—its lyric and architectural style weaving through the musicality of the language to meet the grace and power of the words.

The piece gives Eliot’s meditations on time and being a new substance, and a humanity that is both modernist and contemporary.

SiNS presents two works. Hungry like the Wolf, choreographed by Vancouver’s Daelik, is a modern day Morality Play set in a dystopian near future, inspired by Greed. Mixed Repertoire Choreographer: Cyrus Khambatta Dancers: Eric Aguilar, Jennifer Dawn Elder, Christopher McCallister, Rachel Randall, Meredith Sallee Originally from New York, Khambatta Dance Company arrived on the Seattle dance scene in 2001. The company produces works where rigorous partnering and athletic movement are contrasted with authentic human content to create emotionally moving dance that is both visually beautiful and physically demanding.

La Confidencia Choreographer, Dancer: Mariano Cruceta Guitarist: Caroline PlantĂŠ Reversing the traditional female dancer and male musician roles in flamenco, virtuoso flamenco dancer/choreographer Mariano Cruceta is joined by female guitarist Caroline PlantĂŠ in their own fiery performance in La Confidencia. Adding their own flamenco infusion to the theme of Love, Sex & Death explored last year by Kokoro Dance, Flamenco Rosario, and Out Innerspace, Cruceta Flamenco focuses on the human behaviour that accompanies falling in love.

Fascinated by people and the unique way in which they take part in the world, Boivin explores how we construe and embody the Other.

Ichigo Ichieh’s artistic director/choreographer/dancer Hiromoto Ida brings The Gift to our stage. The Gift is about memories— the ones you want to hold onto forever, the ones you try to let go but cannot, and the ones that leave you at the end of your journey.

Working closely together, they will present a large scale new work inspired from Walt Whitman’s trenchant poem ‘I Sing the Body Electric ’ which explores the question: what is the soul, if not the body?

Marc Boivin (Montreal) March 16-18, 9:45 AM-11:30 AM, Harbour Dance Centre (927 Granville Street) Cost: $20, Contemporary Dance Masterclass The technique class offered is a contemporary dance class, drawing material from the Limón technique and from ballet principles. It challenges the dancer to develop a dynamic balance between strength and freedom of movement, release of ballistic weight to propel the gesture, clarity of impulse within the proprioceptive sphere combined with a relationship of intent to the scenic space, through clear form and focus. In this process, technique is defined as the preparation of the body towards a dynamic and creative state, and the acquisition of tools to physically articulate the dancer’s artistic contribution according to his/her choices.

Cyrus Khambatta (Seattle) March 11, 10:30 AM-11:30 AM, Harbour Dance Centre (927 Granville Street) Cost: $20, Contemporary Dance Masterclass By means of contact with the body’s deep anatomical components, specific movement qualities and mental states are awakened, as well as a wealth of images which ultimately can define the body’s expression. It is of particular interest to investigate to what extent the nature of the specific image material is recognizable to us collectively, as humans, or to what extent it is determined exclusively individually. The workshop makes use of Authentic Movement and ’hands on’ contact as well as improvisation/composition work based on anatomical experience. Recommended for movers with experience in dance and composition work.

Life Drawing Sessions Come draw with us! The public is invited to participate in the Life Drawing Sessions which take place every weekday (Monday-Friday only) at noon from March 1-18. Meet us in the Exhibition Hall, where clothed/costumed dancers will move and pose to inspire your sketches for a full hour. Sessions are FREE and no pre-registration is necessary; bring your own materials. Open to all skill levels. Participants are welcome to contribute their drawings to the evolving exhibition where the pieces will be displayed until March 19 when they may be picked up at the Roundhouse.

PRESENT AN ARTIST You can become a sponsor of any artist presented by the Vancouver International Dance Festival. Choose your favourite dance style, dance company or even which country they hail from, and help us bring them to Vancouver. Significant costs are involved in hosting groups of professional dancers who train for months to choreograph, produce and rehearse new works to present in performance. This is a unique way in identifying your company with specific artists that you want to see performing at the VIDF.

LARISA FAYAD MEMORIAL FUND In loving memory of Larisa Fayad (1976-2007), her friends and family have established the Larisa Fayad Memorial Fund to carry on Larisa’s work and aspirations in the field of lighting design.
