A MESSAGE FROM PREMIER OF BRITISH COLUMBIA As Premier of British Columbia, I extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 2024 Vancouver International Dance Festival (VIDF).

Dance is a powerful medium for creative expression, and VIDF spreads the joy and beauty of this art form by providing a platform for accomplished local and international performers to showcase their talents. This festival highlights the incredible diversity of contemporary dance with its wide range of techniques and influences, while focusing on the work of marginalized groups. This year’s festival promises to be even more fun and immersive with the addition of the VIDF Jazz Club, allowing attendees to join in the dancing alongside some of Vancouver’s most popular jazz artists.

Thank you to the dedicated organizers for coordinating this cherished festival, and to the dancers for sharing your passion and artistry with British Columbians. VIDF has become an integral part of our province’s cultural calendar, and I have no doubt that this year’s festival will provide another captivating experience for all attendees.

CO-PRODUCERS’ NOTES Welcome to the 2024 Vancouver International Dance Festival!

We begin by acknowledging that the 2024 VIDF takes place on the unceded ancestral territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including theterritories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ ílwətaʔ/ Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations and we thank them for sharing their land, with us.

When we started the VIDF in 2000, we had ambitious objectives. We wanted to put Vancouver on the international map of dance, we wanted to build audiences for contemporary dance with a focus on artists from marginalized communities, and we wanted to support the development of the art of contemporary dance by giving performance opportunities to local, national, and international dance artists.

We started producing the VIDF without any funding support. We were, and still are, artists supporting other artists.

Venues include the Vancouver Playhouse, the Annex, the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall and Performance Centre, KW Production Studio, and the Woodward’s Atrium. Each artist/company will have four performances to further their artistic growth and to reach a wider audience. We are staggering start times so that audiences can see as many as 4 performances in a single day.

We are offering a subsidized $25/ticket rate for any patron who cannot afford the regular price of admission. Woodward’s Atrium performances are free and Roundhouse Exhibition Hall performances are included in the ticket price to the Roundhouse Performance Centre shows, $10 online, or pay-what-you-can at the door.

In the following program, you can read about the exciting, provocative, and evocative performances by eight artists/companies from Vancouver, Montreal, Japan, and Hungary. Once again, we are exhibiting art and photography at the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall, and you are invited to join free drawing sessions at the same venue. New this year are nightly Jazz Jams at the KW Production Studio where you can join us in improvising moves on the dance floor or just sit back and groove to the music by Vancouver’s finest jazz musicians rotating nightly under the direction of the brilliant guitarist, Tony Wilson.

In 2012, we contracted Robert Kerr, former Executive Director of the Vancouver International Welcome to the 2024 VIDF! Enjoy!

Jazz Festival and 2010 Cultural Olympiad Programmer, to help us articulate strategic objectives for the VIDF. A key objective that he identified was the need to find a way to condense our programming to a 2-week period Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi that incorporated a variety of venues. In VIDF Co-producers 2024, we have finally achieved that objective.

To better understand the human condition, fully experience the world around us and challenge our assumptions, we need art, now more than ever.

For 24 years, VIDF has provided a space for dance lovers to experience contemporary dance. Their focus on the diversity and breadth of dance lets audiences connect with both local and international artists. I hope you’ll enjoy the festival by exploring a new dance form, revisiting an old favourite, or taking in one of the events or workshops hosted over the two-week festival.

I also want to applaud VIDF on their commitment to making art accessible to all by providing subsidized rates for those who need it. Access to all forms of art is important to fostering creativity and building connections.

More engagement, connection and inspiration are what the arts promise us and what you are bringing to life, collectively, through this unique gathering of the arts and culture in Canada.

The art of dance is an expression of what it means to be human. And these expressions are what make the Vancouver International Dance Festival so special.

Dear Friends:

Now in its 24th year, this celebration has always attracted a rich diversity of artists and dance companies, giving them a premier showcase for their brilliant originality. This year’s gathering is also a great forum to promote equality, as performers of all cultural communities share their talents and passions.

Our government is proud to support this festival, and events like it across the country, because we know the arts are one of the best ways to unite us as Canadians and celebrate our shared values.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage, I’d like to congratulate everyone involved with this year’s wonderful celebration, which has become a joyous spring tradition in Vancouver.

Vancouver Playhouse: Reserved seating ticket prices are $70 Regular Rate

The box office is available online 24/7: online ticket sales are available until one hour before the start of the show. Administrative staff are available to take your calls during office hours 12PM – 4PM, Monday to Saturday.

Door sales start at 7PM at the Vancouver Playhouse and Annex. 5:00PM at Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre. Box Office opens at 9:30PM for all Jazz Jams.

Refunds Policy: Refunds will be made in full in case of a cancelled performance. No other refunds will be made. Missed performances will not be refunded

MODUS OPERANDI

Modus Operandi will share two works-in-progress that are a part of its 2024 post-secondary curriculum. These works are in research and along with additional creations, repertoire and research labs, are part of the student’s creative development this season.

Modus Operandi (MO) was founded in 2007 and offers pivotal post-secondary contemporary dance training.

The mission of MO is to nurture unique emergent voices in dance by continuously investigating and investing in a practice-based curriculum that welcomes all the possible ways to dance. MO seeks to remain nimble and responsive to the evolving dance ecology, to

provide meaningful facilitation of dancers’ relationship to the form so it is empowered, long-lasting and uniquely theirs. Alumni are celebrated as some of Canada’s most radical and inspired new artists producing, creating and performing in an enormous range of formats, environments and organizations.

FERENC FEHÉR Two guys from the future, back from Planet PZ, just to reminisce a little about the old days: the disco, the partying, the flirting, the success. They’d like to explode again.

Two ridiculous buffoons, wallow in the haze of a borrowed smoke machine on the floor of a small room they think is the stage of the world.

They push themselves, they sing, they spin, they push, they throw everything in until exhaustion.

They’re ridiculous and wimpy, but they always get up, and that’s why we love them. The horses, yes, but the dancers aren’t shot … are they?

Springing from an extraordinary union between classical music, performed live by the Molinari Quartet, and contemporary dance, Les corps avalés is a moving human odyssey that reveals Virginie Brunelle’s sensitive intelligence and great

COMPAGNIE VIRGINIE BRUNELLE musicality in all their luminous power.

Against a backdrop of resilience and hope, Les corps avalés explores power relations, inequalities and social upheaval. Mastering the delicate balance between expressiveness and the vigorous

physicality of her choreographic language, Brunelle directs seven dancers in a portrayal of a vulnerable humanity in search of gentleness and community. On stage, the Molinari Quartet delivers a radiant performance of selected pieces from the contemporary

repertoire. The notes perfuse the smallest parts of the performers’ bodies; they animate, amplify, inspire the movement. Disarray, chaos and torment are thus sublimated.

Elegant and intoxicating, Brunelle’s dance is ultimately salutary.

CATHERINE GAUDET an unknown trajectory, finely chiseled, composed of contrasts and modulations, repetitions, and pulsations. Like the stem of a plant that shoots up in spurts, spinning round several times on its way to maturity. The dancer is reconciled to waiting, noting the benefits, cognizant of her own

Peek into the boudoir where you’ll be serenaded by a crooner so seductive, he can’t keep his hands off himself. Morphing between states of action and

receptivity, our protagonist is both masculine and feminine.

When consensus reality is called into question, the mind’s fantasies are powerful enough to create inversion.

Invisible无形 is a solo dealing with the idea of vanishing and not belonging in the society that one lives in. Under-representation in the world of media and arts has created a sense of exclusion in the Asian diaspora. Abstractly inspired by Bruce Lee’s “Hall

of Mirrors” in his film Enter the Dragon, Invisible无形 is Tony Chong’s personal response and reflection to how he continues to navigate within a systemic cultural in-existence.

CONAN AMOK The Folds is a 60-minute solo butoh work by Conan Amok that was performed in several theaters in Paris, France and Cluj, Romania in 2023. With the theme of transformation, time, space, and body form layers of consciousness and perspective that fold over each other. They twist, distort, and, sometimes, collapse. With slight convulsions,

Amok’s corpse stands and stares at itself. Sacredness and vulgarity run rampant on all sides of his body. Body and choreography merge as phenomena leaving a blank space around them with an afterimage that lingers on. Amok’s choreography is a reference to the essence of physical expression — the transformation of the human.

Conan Amok’s dance, developed while understudying his master Akaji Maro during his 11 years as a member of Dairakudakan, is both powerful and delicate. The flow of power toward exhaustion repeatedly ruptures in small pieces within a vacuum state.

VINCENT WONG KEN CLARKE Ken Clarke is a sculptor living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia. Always amazed by what nature has created through erosion and time, he works with natural materials to explore meaning and process with organic forms.

LIFE DRAWING SESSIONS

Join us in the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall for four noon-hour life drawing sessions on Thursdays and Fridays beginning Thursday, February 29th through Friday, March 8th. Practice your drawing skills and let your creativity be inspired by dancers and life models posing in either costumes or plain clothes in the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall.

These public sessions, presented in partnership with the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre, are open to all skill levels, are free, and require no pre-registration. Sketching paper, pencils, and other supplies are available for participants.

Class size is limited.

This workshop will lead participants to explore an excerpt from the company’s repertoire and to experiment with the range of movement dynamics that Virginie is enthusiastic about dissecting. Through the chosen excerpt, participants will work on several qualities, including musicality, attacks, elasticity, ferocity and release. Through rigorous and precise work, Virginie is above all interested in the human being: his vulnerability as well as his strength, his authenticity and his simplicity in his stage presence.

“I am a dancer-choreographer and teacher and regularly teach at dance academies, festivals, and schools. My teaching method is based on non-standard movements and dynamics. Over the past years, I have participated in various dance training and adapted them to my style.

I use a combination of dance styles such as: Contemporary dance, Physical dance, Latin dance, Martial arts, and Animal movements.

The combination of these has created for me a creative dance-movement style that I have adapted and can teach to anyone, whether beginner, advanced, or professional dancer.

Everyone has their skill and knowledge of movement and dance, it’s just how we can help bring it out in each other. My job is to help bring out the talent, desire, and passion in anyone through dance.” - Ferenc Fehér

KOKORO DANCE Monday, Feb 26 - Thursday, Feb 29 @ 9:30am-11am and Monday, March 4 - Thursday, March 7 @ 9:30am-11am KW Production Studio Kokoro Dance classes build strength, flexibility, and stamina, and develop technical and performance skills. Barbara’s classes focus on technical training and have a consistent structure from warm-up to movement in space. Jay’s classes are more eclectically varied and include more time for improvisational exploration. The two approaches complement each other, and dancers are recommended to take both. Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi are the Co-producers of the VIDF and the Co-directors of Kokoro Dance. Their teaching is strongly influenced by butoh studies over the last 38 years.

MASTER CLASS CAROL PRIEUR Friday, March 8 @ 2pm KW Production Studio A sensory movement workshop focusing on the expressive intelligence and potential of the dancer. Through guided body explorations and vocal work, we will explore the participants’ individuality as their vehicle of communication.

Sharing some of the movement principles that were integral to the creation of Invisible无形.

LARISA FAYAD MEMORIAL FUND In loving memory of Larisa Fayad (1976-2007), her friends and family have established the Larisa Fayad Memorial Fund to carry on Larisa’s work and aspirations in the field of lighting design.

From this fund, biennial bursaries of $5,000 are awarded to enable the careers of emerging lighting designers. The 2024 VIDF Larisa Fayad Memorial Lighting Designer Award winner is Jamie Sweeney.
