P R ODUCE R S ’ NO T E S WELCOME to the 20th edition of the Vancouver International Dance Festival. We begin by acknowledging that the 2020 VIDF takes place on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl ̓ ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

We are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the VIDF by offering 31 performances including 12 free shows, 20 free dance classes, 7 free life drawing sessions with dancers as models, and a free art exhibition of photography by Flamenco Rosario Musical Director and guitarist Victor Kolstee.

Forty years ago, when we first met while dancing in the Paula Ross Dance Company, we were hungry to see as much dance as we could and to be exposed

to new (to us) ways of moving.

In 1980, we saw a performance

by Harupin-ha that included a solo by Koichi Tamano. It was our first exposure to butoh, and the memory of that performance seared itself into the skin and bones of our bodies. In 1986, that memory pushed us to form Kokoro Dance, Canada’s first butoh company.

Twenty years ago, we were still hungry to see more of the diversity of dance expression.

Vancouver had become the culinary capital of Canada with new food flavours, textures, and cooking techniques from around the world, but contemporary dance continued to be predominantly from just one Eurocentric cultural stream.

We started the VIDF to open the doors to diversity.

This event offers dancers from across Canada and around the world a wonderful opportunity to showcase their talent and creativity. I am certain that everyone in attendance will be entertained and inspired by the performances planned for this year’s edition of the festival.

This festival brings together dancers from across the province and throughout the world to celebrate and experience the beauty and innovation of contemporary dance. The exhibition hall and atrium performances, as well as other free events such as workshops, provide a diverse lineup of attractions and opportunities for active participation.

I would like to thank the VIDF for bringing this event to the community, and for its commitment to supporting the art of culturally diverse contemporary dance. You can take pride in your contributions to Canada’s cultural heritage.

Now in its 20th year, the Vancouver International Dance Festival (VIDF) will present three weeks of outstanding international, national, and regional contemporary dance in both performance and workshop settings.

A Message from the Mayor On behalf of my colleagues on City Council and the citizens of Vancouver, I want to welcome everyone to the 2020 Vancouver International Dance Festival.

The Vancouver International Dance Festival (VIDF) is a grand showcase of local, national and international dance artists. The mission of the VIDF is to support the art of culturally diverse contemporary dance. The Festival is a great opportunity for artists and spectators alike to appreciate a diverse range of artistic expression in this unique presentation. The City of Vancouver has a thriving arts community and I am pleased to congratulate the Vancouver International Dance Festival on providing us with such a stand out event. I would also like to send my appreciation to the organizers, volunteers and performers for all the hard work that goes into the making of such a festival. MARCH 6-7, 8PM Epilogos Epilogos: The point in a speech where the speaker attempts to build an emotional response from the audience.

“Rhetoric then may be defined as the faculty of discovering the possible means of persuasion in reference to any subject whatever.” – Aristotle, The Art of Rhetoric From the director: The seed for this work started a few years ago. I felt that, as a society, we’d never been more connected, had more opportunity and had less struggle, and yet, we were more divided than ever. This feeling would lead me down a path of researching human history, power systems, moral codes and the art of rhetoric (the art of persuasion).

Initially, this project was based on the exploration of

a moral code and how each value in this code could be expressed physically. This physical research then shifted into the exploration of how these moral codes were used by systems of power and then framed by the art of rhetoric. Upon exploring the five canons of rhetoric, which detail the means to convincing and persuading the audience, I felt the last layer in this work needed to connect to a modern means of persuasion: media.

Epilogos looks to explore our belief in morality and power, and that our perception of the truth has been designed and crafted by the media and other means to further persuade us.

Line, Starting Line, Practical Questions, Disappear, Solos and Small Groups, Swirling, Space, All Together:

Made and sustained by Alanna Kraaijeveld in collaboration with Modus Operandi artists and Kate Franklin, Line, Starting line, Practical questions, Disappear, Solos and small groups, Swirling, Space, All together is a scored improvised performance. It is comprised of an inventory of relational, movement, visual and textural possibilities. As a work, it practically manifests shifting perspectives, disappearance or invisibility, rhythm as a motor for dynamic possibility, as well a spectrum of intentional engagement.

Our process made use of traditional choreographic (a predetermined sequence of dance movements), and improvisational approaches ( “… [when we improvise] the selections we have made affect the selections we will make.”) (Nachmanovitch, Stephen).

Alanna Kraaijeveld is a contemporary dance artist who has been active in the milieu for 15 years. She toured internationally with Dave St-Pierre, one of Canada’s most soughtafter choreographers, in productions Un peu

de tendresse bordel de merde and Foudres.

From 2004-2008 she was a company dancer of Le Groupe Dance Lab, an international centre for choreographic research, under the direction of Order of Canada recipient Peter Boneham. Alanna is a close student of Linda Kapetanea and Jozef Frucek, developers of Fighting Monkey Practice.

Her emergent choreographic practice is focused on improvisation and site-centered performance. She is fascinated by person-to-person and person-and-environment relationships, and their

potential to motivate intention, movement and meaning within the dynamic structure improvisation provides.

As performer, creator, teacher and improvisor, Kraaijeveld’s collaborations have been diverse and numerous.

Artists and organizations include Marie Claire Forté, Modus Operandi, École supérieure d’art dramatique (Paris), Justine Chambers, Yves Charuest, Company 605, Studio 303, Stella Adler Studio of Acting (NYC), Opéra de Québec, William Parker, Louise Bédard, Frédérick Gravel, among others.

The Station “Ferenc Fehér’s choreography, in which the dancers act as though animated by some mysterious force, is astonishingly organic and yet mechanical at the same time, simultaneously conjuring up mathematical formulae and natural patterns, the intelligent human particle floating in an abstract plane, and the collective (quantum?) consciousness. The Station is a super-concentrated ‘interim’ microcosmos both

inside and outside real space and time , depicting the incessantly restless state of an urban zombie and the cacophony of an outside world woven from a rich fabric of sounds (also created by Fehér); and in the centre of it all stands its quintessence that is the complex relationship between two people with their own internal rules, which they are all too ready to break at the drop of a hat.”

Here Again: A collection of Three Scores In Fall 2016, Vancouver dance artists Felicia Lau, Erika Mitsuhashi and Mahaila Patterson-O’Brien formed the collective, Farouche. The collective’s artistic practice is focused towards collaborative creation and addressing individual voices within a collective setting. Their choreographic interests consist of devising structured movement scores, thinking bodies, formal clarity, and visual design. In their time

together, Farouche self-produced their debut show at the Gold Saucer (2016), participated in the Simon Fraser University’s SCA Alumni Dance Lab (2017), were artists and residence at the Anvil Centre (2017), facilitated a workshop with the first year students of the SFU Dance program (2017), and premiered their first full length work, We Talk Disco One Day, at the Gold Saucer (2018).

OLIVIA SHAFFER MARCH 26-28, 7PM Senescence (/sɪˈnɛsəns/): the process of deterioration that occurs in the aging mind and body Senescence Senescence sheds light on the unglamorous yet ubiquitous final stage of life when there is often an unravelling of our autonomy. Emerging from the experience of caregiving for my father, who had dementia and Parkinson’s disease, the work reflects the metamorphosis that occurs as essential features of one’s selfhood are stripped away. Dance, poetic spoken word, and electronic and live music are woven together with humour and pathos. Created by Olivia Shaffer, in collaboration with composer/performer Alex Mah and dramaturge Chick Snipper.

Olivia Shaffer is a choreographer, performing artist, and movement teacher, based on the unceded

Coast Salish territories, also known as Vancouver, BC. She creates living, embodied dance that reflects facets of the human condition. She harnesses dance as a metaphor for our ever-seeking nature, while experiencing perpetual transience. For over a decade, Olivia has worked as a freelance performer and improvisor, interpreting the work of choreographers Peter Bingham/EDAM Dance, Helen Walkley, Alvin Tolentino/Co. ERASGA, Delia Brett & Daelik/MACHiNENOiSY, and many other inspiring artists. Olivia teaches workshops at institutions for professional, pre-professional, and community dancers, and has taught in Europe, the United States, and Asia.

Birthday present for myself Accomplished dancer-choreographer-actor Hiromoto Ida skillfully merges dance, theatre, classical music and voice to tell the story of the old man, raising a glass of sake to himself in celebration on what will be his last birthday. Reminiscing about the richness of his life experience, he is visited by the spirit of his wife (soprano Allison Girvan). Featuring musicians Nicola Everton (clarinet), Sue Gould (piano), Jeff Faragher (cello), and Martine den Bok (violin & viola),

performing an evocative original score by Russian composer Pavel Karmanov. Inspired by the subtlety and simplicity of Japanese Noh theatre through western contemporary dance and music, Hiromoto Ida touches the hearts of audiences. Exploring shared moments through the inner world and emotions of an old man, Ida inspires unexpected beauty through themes of love, transformation and regeneration.

I named “ICHIGO-ICHIEH NEW THEATRE” for this reason: ICHIGO-ICHIEH means if you meet someone it is a unique occasion – it happens only once in that moment in your entire life.

KOKORO DANCE MARCH 27-28, 8PM Kokoro Dance’s butoh expression gives recurring attention to the seven aesthetic principles of Zen philosophy: kanso — simplicity; fukinsei — asymmetry or irregularity; shibumi — beauty in the understated; shizen — naturalness without pretense; yugen — subtle grace; datsuzoku — freeness; and seijaku — tranquility.

These terms are encompassed in a world view that the Japanese call wabi sabi — the acceptance of transience and imperfection.

Reading the Bones Reading the Bones is an aleatory performance piece where we have thrown the bones of past choreography onto the stage to create a new work that reflects the maturation of our choreographic research into what it means to be human. We looked for phrases and paragraphs from our past repertoire of over 190 dance works and selected passages from Impending Death (1990), Truths of the Blood (1996), Embryotrophic Cavatina (1998), Crime Against Grace (2001), ( ) (2003), Here to There (2005), Falling Down (2006), Bellatrix (2007), F (2009), Music of Amber (2011), and Life (2013). We set these selections on five women in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s, who each perform all these excerpts except for Impending Death (only Barbara) and Here to There (only Katie, Molly, Deanna, and Salomé). We allowed individual freedom of expression into the

piece, even in ensemble sections, while demanding allegiance to form and sequence. It is our practice to allow dancers to go in and out of phase with one another, to sometimes lead, sometime follow. Spatial and temporal relationships develop spontaneously or, possibly, they do not. Harmony and dissonance arise as a matter of course that is influenced by the prescribed structural sequence. The music and lighting also overlap with the dance as Joseph’s music was composed only with his intuitive sense of what we were looking for and Gerald’s lighting deliberately lingers or foreshadows as movement enters or leaves his pools and shafts of luminosity. Reading the Bones, essentially, is five 64-minute solos performed as an ensemble. Each dancer has her own unique journey and a shared group journey—five generations of women evoking the power of Yin.

“In my dances I use my personal movement vocabulary, which has developed over the years and is still constantly changing. My style is very close to physical dance and contemporary dance. I focus for the creative work for advanced and professional dancers.

Hari Krishnan is a Bessie (New York City) and Dora (Toronto) Award nominee dance artist, scholar and teacher. He is Associate Professor of Dance in the Department of Dance at Wesleyan University and artistic director of Toronto-based company inDANCE. He holds a PhD in Dance from Texas Woman’s University. Krishnan’s research areas include queer identities in dance performance, contemporary dance from global perspectives, colonialism, post-colonialism and Indian dance, Bharatanatyam in Tamil cinema and the history of courtesan dance traditions in South India.

Our classes build strength, flexibility, and stamina, as well as developing technical and performance skills. The difference between the two types of classes reflects the different approaches to the same end taken by Barbara and Jay. Barbara’s classes focus on technical training and have a consistent structure from warm-up to movement in space.

Jay’s classes are more eclectically varied and include more time for improvisational exploration. The two approaches complement each other, and dancers are recommended to take both.

Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi are the Co-producers of the VIDF and the Co-directors of Kokoro Dance. Their teaching is strongly influenced by butoh studies over the last 35 years.

These classes are open to all levels of experience.

You will use the imagination in tandem with the physical body, to generate new movement ideas and work fluidly in an ensemble.

We will practice these skills in guided improvisations that focus on variations of craft, group work, and individual movement invention. This will require heavy physical work.”

He has just completed a monograph entitled Celluloid Classicism: Early Tamil Cinema and the Making of Modern Bharatanatyam (forthcoming, Wesleyan University Press). He continues to be commissioned internationally for his bold and transgressive choreography.

Located in the Woodward’s Heritage Building in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver on the unceded traditional and ancestral homelands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, KW studios are multipurpose production/ performance spaces available for rent to the public with subsidies available to support low-income, non-profit, Indigenous and DTES artists.

The spaces consist of a 1,051 sq. ft. dance studio on the main floor, and a 3,802 sq. ft. production studio with attached recording studio, dressing room and servery in the basement. The 2020 VIDF is proud to present Victor Kolstee for our Art Exhbition Series

VICTOR KOLSTEE March 18-28 at the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall Victor has been the music director/ guitarist of FLAMENCO ROSARIO for more than 25 years and a teacher at CENTRO FLAMENCO since 1989. His photography began in a UBC darkroom in 1964 developing and printing B+W film, followed by years of Kodachrome – he presently shoots digital. Although music and family left little time for photos, he consistently used his camera wherever he toured and over the years he has defined and refined his artistic goals.

Encouragement from respected artists and friends prompted him to enter the SALTSPRING NATIONAL ART PRIZE in 2015 where his photo

IF ONLY TONI was chosen as one of only 52 works, out of more that 1300 entries, which resulted in the first public showing of his work.

This exhibit clearly demonstrates his fascination with walls as great canvasses in constant state of change – powerless to ward off the assaults of weather, people, dogs, and time itself, Fauxscapes and – real or imagined – relationships between objects are some of the areas of focus in this show. His use of ambiguity appeals to our puzzlesolving self-helping to create an immediate relationship between the viewer and the image through the element of surprise.

We produce this festival as a labour of love for the art of contemporary dance—the VIDF’s Co-producers receive no salaries for their VIDF management services. We are dance artists that support other dance artists because we want to nurture and sustain this artform that gives us the precious ability to express ourselves as human beings.

LARISA FAYAD MEMORIAL FUND

You can support the festival’s programming and the continued growth of contemporary dance through donations to the Vancouver International Dance Festival. The VIDF is a non-profit, artist-run, registered charitable society (CRA# 892858614RR0001) that needs your support. Your donation will help to ensure ongoing opportunities for local dancers, and touring opportunities for international artists to bring their works to the stage in Vancouver. Supervised by the Vancouver Foundation, the VIDF Endowment Fund is building a long-term legacy for the festival. Interest from this fund supports the programming of the society and nurtures the development of dance and theatre by supporting the Larisa Fayad bursary award for emerging lighting designers, and the VIDF choreographic award, issued in alternating years.

In loving memory of Larisa Fayad (1976-2007), her friends and family have established the Larisa Fayad Memorial Fund to carry on Larisa’s work and aspirations in the field of lighting design. From this fund, bursaries will be disbursed to enable the careers of emerging lighting designers. In 2020, the festival will present an award of $2500 under this program, the seventh bursary presented from the Larisa Fayad Memorial Fund.

OTHER GIFTS Unrestricted donations to the society can also be made directly to the VIDF office, or as an additional contribution when purchasing tickets online through the VIDF Box Office, with charitable tax receipts available for contributions of $25 or more.

We have a number of roles that need filling each March to ensure the festival runs smoothly and delivers the best experience possible for our patrons, and your work with the festival is greatly appreciated.
