We started the VIDF to support the art of contemporary dance. Included in your ticket price is a membership to the Vancouver International Dance Festival Society, a non-profit society registered with Revenue Canada Taxation as a charitable organization.

By coming to see our shows, you help to develop and sustain the careers of contemporary dance artists. Some of these artists are at the beginning of their creative journeys; others are at the pinnacle of international recognition. The 2014 VIDF Vancouver Playhouse series opens with China’s oldest modern dance company, the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, formed in 1992, in collaboration with Vancouver’s Goh Ballet that started in 1978. We remember fondly those great ballet classes with Chiat and Lin Yee Goh in the late 70’s, first at the Holy Rosary Cathedral in downtown Vancouver and later at their 12th and Arbutus studios when current Goh Ballet Artistic Director, Chan Hon Goh, was just a little girl. The March 7th and 8th programs will feature the two companies on their own as well as collaborating on a new work combining

dancers from Canada and China. Two weeks later on March 22nd and 23rd, the Vancouver Playhouse stage will be ignited by the sensational dancing of Israel Galván, the world’s foremost Flamenco virtuoso. We have been mesmerized by his dazzling artistry over the past seven years having seen him three times previously in Montpellier, Utrecht, and Montreal. We are very excited to present his Vancouver premiere of La Edad de Oro where he returns to the essential ingredients of flamenco: guitar, voice, and dance. But, be prepared, Israel Galván pushes the classicism of flamenco’s Golden Era into the 21st Century in an astonishing display of virtuosic and unique expression of scintilatingly complex footwork, emotionally powerful arm and torso movements—all containing that inexpressible quality of duende.

Our Roundhouse series opens March 13th to the 15th with the equally astonishing Benoît Lachambre who has just been awarded the $50,000 2013 MONTREAL DANCE PRIZE presented by QUÉBECOR. We presented Benoît at the 2001 VIDF and in the interim between then and now, he has become one of

A Message from the Mayor On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver, and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend my warmest greetings to the 2014 Vancouver International Dance Festival.

The Vancouver International Dance Festival showcases local, national and international dance artists to provide world-class entertainment for us all to enjoy. Dance encompasses many forms and this festival allows us to learn as well as enjoy the vast array of movement. The Vancouver International Dance Festival has put together a wonderful assembly of distinct expressions for us all to appreciate. We want to thank all the performers who have travelled both near and far to share their art with us. The City of Vancouver has a thriving arts community and I am pleased to congratulate the Vancouver International Dance Festival for such an ingenious show.

After filling out a contact card and paying the $3 annual fee, patrons become VIDF society members with voting privileges, and receive the 2014 festival button that allows unlimited entry to the 7PM performances on the Roundhouse Community Stage in the Exhibition Hall throughout the festival. KOKORO DANCE

Kokoro Dance, one of Vancouver’s favourite dance companies, performs with local music group Spring (formerly the SSRIs) on March 2nd for a festival preview performance at North Vancouver’s Lonsdale Quay Market, and again during the festival March 9th and 16th as they explore sound and movement to create site specific works for the Woodward’s Atrium and the Roundhouse Turntable Plaza.

Unpredictable, unique and of the moment, these performances are one of a kind events that interact with and draw from their diverse settings, and they are free for the community to attend!

Goh Ballet treats Vancouver to the Walspurgisnacht Ballet

contemporary choreographer in the world of ballet, while GMDC makes its Vancouver debut with Voice After, a work choreographed by its resident choreographer Liu Qi. Inspired by the poetry of Bei Dao, Liu Qui depicts the tranquility of ocean waves, flocks of gulls, and the hidden storm surging below. The evening culminates with the premiere of Mustard Seed, also

choreographed Liu Qi, but combining the dancers of both GMDC and Goh Ballet to create a large scale work that bridges the Pacific Ocean by connecting the vibrant energies and technical virtuosos of these two companies.

NEW WORK The VIDF kicks off its performances on the Roundhouse Community Stage with a new work for the dancers of Modus Operandi, presented free for VIDF Members.

Created in 2007, Modus Operandi is a training initiative of Out Innerspace Dance Theatre, drawing on the experience and vision of its founders David Raymond and Tiffany Tregarthen, and working with professionals from Vancouver’s dance community. Modus Operandi offers pivotal performance experiences for its emerging contemporary dancers who come from diverse dance backgrounds and

experience, but share a fervent curiosity and hunger for fresh exploration of contemporary dance.

SNAKESKINS Benoît Lachambre, founder of Par B.L.eux, is a major force in Canadian dance. His audacious and daring works are in high demand in Europe and Quebec, and he returns to the VIDF stage with a multimedia and polysensorial performance of a fake solo titled Snakeskins. Accompanied on stage by dancer Daniele Albanese and musician Hahn Rowe (hence the ‘fake’ solo), Lachambre‘s body undulates, surrenders, and is ultimately transformed by minute alterations of symmetry and balance, exploring organic variations and amplitudes of movement in a reptilian metaphor that is, inevitably, about molting—a provoking meditation on new growth through the shedding of old skin.

Through more than thirty years as a choreographer, performer, and teacher, Benoît Lachambre has developed a distinct sensibility and role within the Canadian and International dance landscape, utilizing a kinaesthetic approach to movement and improvisation that explores and awakens the senses.

In addition to his more than 16 works created for Par B.L.eux since its founding in 1996, he has also collaborated with, or created work for numerous artists and companies such as Marie Chouinard, Louise Lecavalier, and Stockholm’s Cullberg Ballet. In recognition of his work, Benoît Lachambre was awarded the Grand Prix De La Danse De Montréal 2013 on November 26, 2013.

FLASH A conversation in movement between two remarkable artists, Flash brings together Michael Sakamoto, a transdisciplinary creator best known for his innovative and philosophical approach to butoh, and Rennie Harris, an award winning, critically acclaimed hip hop choreographer who has served as USA cultural ambassador to Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel.

In this dance duet, the artists create a dialogue and exploration between their aesthetics of butoh and hip hop,

cultural background, and personalities.

Trying out each other’s language, discovering commonalities, both cultural and personal, exploring two art forms born from marginalized cultures, and addressing the body in crisis, Flash is illumination, enlightenment, stealthiness, and transcendence, the impermanence of life and the urgent need for transformation.

Using movement, sound, and image, veteran Vancouver choreographer Judith Garay examines how we perceive our internal and external worlds.

Every city has its own rhythm, and Yui Kawaguchi and Aki Takase mirror these rhythms like microcosms under a magnifying glass, creating a new utopian city in their interplay of choreography, composition and improvisation – The City in the Piano (Die Stadt im Klavier).

In the five years since Yui Kawaguchi, the dancer, asked Aki Takase, the jazz pianist, to appear on stage with her, the duo have continued their passionate dialogue leading to the creation of Cadenza. In this work, the concert piano is the central tool of the evening’s performance. Aki Takase’s mastery of the entire body of this instrument separates it acoustically into

its individual components, and creates links between intertwined harmonies, isolated tones and manipulated timbres.

Yui Kawaguchi delves into these sound spheres and forms new structures and physical spaces through dance.

ISRAEL GALVÁN LA EDAD DE ORO A bold and virtuosic dance artist, Israel Galván makes his first appearance in Vancouver showcasing his unique and innovative approach to flamenco in the work La Edad de Oro. The Seville born dancer has received numerous accolades and awards for his work, including Spain’s prestigious Golden Fine Arts Medal in 2012, and the Spanish National Dance Award citing his “ability to generate a new creation of flamenco art without forgetting the true roots that have sustained it until today and make it a universal genre” Bringing both great subtlety and explosive rhythmic movement to his work, Galván acknowledges and is

faithful to the spirit of flamenco’s long lineage and history, while smashing stereotypes and preconceptions common to the form. Partnering with cantor David Lagos and guitarist Alfredo Lagos to mine the popular conception of flamenco’s golden age in the late 1800’s through 1930’s, in La Edad de Oro they push away the age to extract only the gold in a performance that is not to be missed.

Collaborating with Ame Henderson and Charles Quevillon, the company returns to the VIDF to bring us Room with Sticks, a site specific work that will transform the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall. Room with Sticks is a collaborative movement and sound performance that concerns reconstruction rather than

Born in Steveston, BC, and raised in Japan, Tsuneko (Koko) Kokubo studied at the Vancouver School of Fine Art (now Emily Carr University) prior to a career as an artist, costume designer and performer. For the past 25 years, Koko has been painting largely in oils and acrylics and her works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and included in collections throughout Canada, Europe, Japan, Mexico and the USA.

Celebrated painter, printmaker and muralist Richard Tetrault lives and works out of Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood, exploring life within the contemporary urban landscape and capturing the shifting dynamics of the street. Mr. Tetrault was awarded the Vancouver Mayor’s Arts Award for Community Public Art in 2008, and in 2013 was the recipient of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Vancouver based photographer Chris Randle draws from his archives of more than 30 years of dance photography to bring you highlights of his work capturing the performing arts in motion.
