As the Premier of the Province of British Columbia, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2008 Vancouver International Dance Festival at locations around the Lower Mainland including the Roundhouse Community Centre, Centennial Theatre, the Norman Rothstein Theatre and the Scotiabank Dance Centre.

Welcome to the eighth edition of the Vancouver International Dance Festival!

The Lower Mainland will once again come alive in celebration of dance. The Festival will feature a variety of dance participants including innovators in butoh, hip hop, contact improvisation, contemporary and Aboriginal dance. It is a great way to celebrate the artistic and cultural spirit of the world.

The 2008 VIDF is dedicated to the memory of VIDF Technical Director/Lighting Designer Larisa Fayad who was tragically killed in a plane crash in Thailand last September. Larisa shared her talent and her heart with all of us and we miss her dearly.

ABOUT CHIASMATA Chiasmata takes us on a strange and beautiful journey through time, space and the portals of memory where the dancers inhabit a cryptic world that can be playful, percussive or sublimely vulnerable. Chi is the Greek letter X, while a chiasma is an intersection or crossing. In the field of genetics, chiasmata are the connection points where DNA strands exchange information; this exchange is the basis for the growth of a complex living organism.

Chiasmata is Christopher House’s deeply humanistic response to the complexities of modern life.

ABOUT FABRICE RAMALINGOM Fabrice Ramalingom’s career as a dancer-choreographer extends back nearly two decades and places him in work from some of the most renowned Western choreographers of the Twentieth Century, including Dominique Bagouet, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Trisha Brown.

Intrigued by multidisciplinary and transnational collaborations and based in Montpellier (a choreographic hive of activity in France), Ramalingom is an in-demand instructor throughout France and artist-in-residence at the National Stage Theatre of Sète and Bassin de Thau.

ABOUT COMPAGNIE AURÉLIA—RITA CIOFFI The comedic and charismatic former ballerina Rita Cioffi returns with a familiar and strange bi-lingual exploration of our funny bones. Rita Cioffi was born in Rome in 1960 and has an outstanding classical background. She discovered contemporary dance taking lessons with renowned dancer Peter Gross when she moved to Paris in the 1980’s. In 1989, she met the famous French dancer and choreographer Dominique Bagouet and joined his company at the Centre National Chorégraphique in Montpellier. In 1996, she decided to present her own work as a choreographer and founded Compagnie Aurélia—Rita Cioffi. Sometimes controversial and often provocative, Rita Cioffi is an ‘artist engagée.’ “I want to put dance in a social context,” she said once to the French press.

ABOUT M.Body.7 Specially conceived to celebrate her 35th anniversary season, M.Body.7 is Margie’s first group piece created under the auspices of the Margie Gillis Dance Foundation. Woven together of solos, duets and group work segments, the program is tailored to complement the unique style of each invited performer.

M.Body.7 features seven principal dancers/soloists: Gioconda Barbuto, Anik Bissonnette, Holly Bright, Laurence Lemieux, Emily Molnar, Risa Steinberg, and Margie Gillis. An allfemale cast of dancers 40 to 60 years of age—with the exception of Ms Molnar and special appearances by 72 year old dancer Eleanor Duckworth and 10 year old Sandrine BissonnetteRobitaille—each choreography was designed with care to showcase the personalities of every invited dancer and, as such, highlights their ageless beauty and spirited talent.

ABOUT Margie Gillis Margie Gillis is an internationally acclaimed modern dance artist who has evolved on the Canadian and international scene for 35 years. As a choreographer and dancer of more than 80 original solo dance works, Margie Gillis has earned rave reviews for her shows in Asia, Europe, the Middle-East and North and South America. She is an Honorary Cultural Ambassador for both the Quebec and the Canadian governments, and was the first modern dance artist to be appointed to the Order of Canada (1987). ABOUT TAKETERU KUDO Taketeru Kudo was born in Tokyo in 1967 and graduated from Keio-Guijuku University with a degree in literature. Butoh opened his eyes when he saw Koichi Tamano perform in 1989. He then joined the companies of Koichi Tamano and Yukio Waguri. From 1995 to 1998, he worked with internationally-acclaimed butoh troupe Sankai Juku. Kudo danced and choreographed at Asbestos-kan under the direction of Akiko Motofuji (the widow of butoh’s co-creator Tatsumi Hijikata) and formed his own company Tokyo Guienkan in 1997. Currently he focuses on mostly solo work and performs throughout the world.

ABOUT THE VARGAS PROJECT EDAM introduced Phase One of The Vargas Project— a collaboration between Peter Bingham and American musician and composer Mike Vargas—at the 2007 VIDF. For two weeks in 2006, Vargas created a multitude of original soundscores at EDAM—real time creation recorded in the moment. Choosing one hour from the twenty hours of music, Peter Bingham created an initial work for three women that manifested his characteristic wit and seamless contact movement. The dancers this year have multiplied to eleven, expanding Peter’s exploration of momentous choice in the moment that has the amazing capacity to rescue hope from disaster.

ABOUT EDAM EDAM (an acronym for Experimental Dance and Music) originally formed in 1982 by seven independent artists. In 1989, Peter Bingham became EDAM’s sole Artistic Director. Peter Bingham is one of the pioneers of Contact Improvisation, a dance form that emphasizes flow and the cooperative exchange of weight between partners. The “touch and tumble” of Contact is a hallmark of much of his choreography, lending both athleticism and graceful elegance to his partnering and ensemble work. Since the 80s, Bingham has created over 50 choreographed works which have been performed in theatres, dance festivals and universities across Canada and in the United States. ABOUT SPOKEN WORD/BODY This show may be viewed as a poeticized document on the body consciousness relationship and on potential developments the future may hold for the body. Here, the narrator’s body may serve as a source of visual support to give expression to these developments. The dual, dichotomous function of narrator and moving body-subject seemed rich and amusing to me. Inevitably, the theme also reveals some of my personal concerns. It is important for me, through the moments of shared intimacy a show brings, to universalize the identity and history of the person who steps forward: this gives viewers something to identify with in their own lives. This is a tribute to the spoken word, to the act of telling stories, sharing one’s life, and, with very little, capturing people’s imaginations and giving them something to dream about. It’s about coming to the defense of this intimate, informal format, and bringing its strength and poetic potential into focus. Finally, it is a means of expressing my fascination with what psycho-analyst/essayist Julia Kristeva so aptly dubs “this heterogenous whole that is the speaking organism.”

ABOUT MARTIN BÉLANGER Martin Bélanger has been exploring dance since 1992. In 1997, he completed a bachelor degree in dance at Université du Quebec a Montréal, where he received the William Douglas Scholarship. Since 1996, he has been presenting his own work in Montréal, Toronto, New York, Norway, Finland, Japan, Germany, and France. His first choreographic work for young people, Un peu comme toi (2006) was commissioned by Montréal Danse. ABOUT PARADIS/PARADISE PARADIS/PARADISE is an intercontinental dance project between Canada and France led by Alvin Erasga Tolentino in collaboration with French musician/composer Emmanuel de St Aubin and Vancouver media artist, Donna Szoke. In exploring the relationship of dance to live music and visual images, PARADIS/PARADISE streams moments of synchronicity between the three art forms. ABOUT TO-MORROW, & TO-MORROW, & TO-MORROW Simultaneously performed at the 2007 VIDF with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Kokoro Dance separated on two stages linked by video and audio feeds, this year’s reworked version focuses solely on the dances with a recorded score. Barbara’s lyricism and pixyish humour for six female dancers contrasts with Jay’s interest in essential minimalism. What both choreographers share is a desire for the body to sing its own language.

ABOUT KOKORO DANCE Kokoro Dance was formed by Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi in 1986. Jay and Barbara are prolific creators of viscerally disturbing dances that provoke extreme responses. ABOUT HARMONY IN RED: LA DESSERTE Harmony in Red: la desserte is an ephemeral, poetic journey of two ever-changing, interchangeable, unique, androgynous beings. The title—also the name of a famous Matisse painting—is an homage to expressionist artists such as Kokoschka, Matisse, and Schiele.

ABOUT BUTOH-A-GO-GO BUTOH-a-GO-GO is Thomas Anfield and Kevin Bergsma. Together they create and perform all aspects of their original performance (fifteen to date) utilizing various creative modes including elements of theatre, live painting, modern dance and martial arts with original sound and light compositions. Anfield & Bergsma met in 1995 while working with Kokoro Dance. Inspired by the artistry of Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi, Anfield and Bergsma began creating their own works and in 1999 formed BUTOH-a-GO-GO, a ’second generation West Coast Butoh/Performance Company,’ exploring their distinct representation of this Japanese-born art form from the perspective of two individuals born into the multicultural melting pot of West Coast Canada. In recent years, BUTOH-a-GO-GO has performed in Vancouver’s Press Play Festival (2003 and 2005); in Moscow at the Moscow Ballet’s Festival of Contemporary Dance (2004 and 2006); at Vancouver’s Dancing On the Edge Festival (2005 and 2006); and in Victoria’s Romp! Festival of Contemporary Dance (2006).

The friends and family of Larisa Fayad have established the Larisa Fayad Memorial Fund to carry on Larisa’s work and aspirations in the field of lighting design. The fund will be used to give grants to emerging and established lighting designers to foster the development of the art of lighting design. Friends wishing to contribute to the fund can do so by cash or cheque donation to the Vancouver International Dance Festival Society (registered as a charitable organization with Revenue Canada - 892858614RR0001).
