HELLO! I’m writing this a few weeks before our first ever VidCon Australia and I am extremely excited. I have never been south of the equator. There is an entire hemisphere of the planet I haven’t even seen, and I’m finally getting to do that—and I can’t think of a better way to do that than through VidCon. The geography and ecology of a place are fascinating, and I want very much to dive into Australia’s. But ultimately, it’s humans that truly make a place, and what better way to get to know people than through the things they create? In the last year of familiarizing myself with the creative culture of Australia and Melbourne, I’ve been thrilled by the abundance of creation and appreciation. We’ve experienced such a warm reception by creators, their communities, and even the governments of Melbourne and Victoria. Melbourne truly seems to be a hub of inclusion, connection, enthusiasm, and diversity. I cannot imagine a more fitting home for a VidCon. I’m so excited to connect, celebrate, and learn with you all.

WELCOME On behalf of the Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB), it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Melbourne - officially the world’s most liveable city and host of VidCon Australia 2017. Melbourne is renowned as a city that is full of surprises; around every corner, laneway, building and outdoor space, Melbourne is alive with fashion, food, art and culture, and I am excited for you to make these discoveries. Every Melbournian absolutely loves their city, and in the next few days you will find out why. I wish you a very successful and enjoyable visit to Melbourne. Yours sincerely

CODE OF CONDUCT It is vital to us that VidCon be a safe place for all attendees. VidCon is a private event, and people who mistreat or disrespect other people will be removed and not allowed for the duration of the event. VidCon reserves the right to permanently ban attendees and guests who do not comply with the code of conduct, including for future events put on by VidCon LLC and VidCon International LLC. Please use good judgement and be respectful, as we’ll dislike throwing you out almost as much as you’ll dislike being thrown out.

sometimes things you think are cool might make other people extremely uncomfortable or be very dangerous. Pranks often make for some great videos, but it makes us really sad when they are emotionally or physically hurtful, so don’t do that. If we hear about anyone pranking in ways that are disruptive to the well-being of our guests or attendees, there’s a pretty strong chance it will get the prankster kicked out. Also, please keep in mind that we are sharing the convention centre and hotels with others, and it is our duty to be friendly neighbors. Not everyone “gets” this thing we are all into. Let’s show everyone that we are a positive and friendly group.

ACCESS

Purchasing a VidCon Australia pass does not guarantee that you will meet a particular Featured Creator, and if you are only coming to VidCon to meet one particular person, you should consider not purchasing a ticket. We do not clear rooms between events. All activities have limited capacity as set by the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, so even though your badge is required to access all activities, it does not guarantee you access to any activity if it has reached its capacity. It is physically impossible for Featured Creators to meet every attendee. All meet & greets are of a limited nature, and your badge or meet & greet ticket does not guarantee autographs or photos in the Meet & Greet Hall.

LISTEN TO STAFF

All VidCon Australia attendees and badge purchasers must adhere to the instructions of all VidCon Australia employees and agents, all security employees and agents, the staff of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, and any and all law enforcement personnel.

PROHIBITIONS

Alcohol, drugs, weapons, and items that can be mistaken as weapons are expressly prohibited, even if they are part of a costume. Backpacks and other similar containers are subject to search and may be prohibited. Unlawful sale or attempted sale of badges will result in the revocation of that badge without refund.

FEATURED CREATORS

The Featured Creators who participate in VidCon Australia are excited to see attendees, but please be respectful. They need to be safe and ensure all attendees are safe while moving around the event, so do not run at or crowd around Featured Creators in public walkways, near escalators, or around doorways. Creators also need to take a break at their hotel, so attempting to follow them to their rooms, riding the hotel elevators, waiting in the hotel lobby, or any other similar behavior is prohibited.

IMAGE RELEASE

This is the part where we go ahead and state the obvious… VidCon Australia is an event produced by, for, and about online video enthusiasts. As such, VidCon Australia may be recorded or reproduced by VidCon Australia, its designees, and/or attending participants. By registering to be in attendance at VidCon Australia, you hereby authorize VidCon Australia, its designees, and/or attending participants to record, transcribe, modify, reproduce, perform, display, transmit and distribute in any form and for any purpose any such recordings of VidCon Australia. By registering for VidCon Australia you hereby release VidCon Australia, its designees, and/or its attending participants from any and all claims it or its employees or agents may possess, now or in the future, in connection with such activities.

HARASSMENT

Disorderly conduct includes (but isn’t limited to) any behavior that is illegal, unsafe, disruptive, discriminatory or causes excessive discomfort to our attendees or guests. If someone doesn’t want to talk to you, don’t keep talking to them. If you do not have permission to touch someone, do not touch them. VidCon Australia loves surprising and interesting unplanned activities, but

MINORS

All minors under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Parents or adult supervisors of minors are responsible for the actions of minors they are supervising. Minors may be prohibited from certain areas due to the sale of alcohol at certain locations.

LIABILITY

You assume any and all risks occurring before, during, or after VidCon Australia. You release VidCon Australia and the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and their agents, licensees, assignees, and their respective affiliates and representatives from any related claims.

VIDCON TERMS OF USE

All VidCon Australia attendees and guests are required to adhere to this Code of Conduct. The VidCon badge, which is required for admittance to all VidCon Australia activities, is a revocable license. VidCon Australia or its designees may, without refund, revoke this license for noncompliance with these terms, or for disorderly conduct.

MELBOURNE CONVENTION AND EXHIBITION CENTRE TERMS OF USE

Attendees of VidCon Australia agree to observe and comply with any and all policies, rules, and regulations of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. VidCon Australia or its designees may, without refund, revoke this license or refuse admission for failure to observe and comply with any and all policies, rules, and regulations of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Attendees of VidCon Australia agree to observe and comply with all laws, statutes, ordinances, rules and regulations of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia, State of Victoria, and the City of Melbourne.

FAQ HOW DO I FIGURE OUT WHAT’S GOING ON AT VIDCON? There are multiple ways to find out what’s happening around you at VidCon Australia. You can look through our agenda in the guide you are holding now, and you can also find it at vidconaustralia.com/ full-agenda. Or you can download our app! Just search VidCon in the app store. The app is your one-stop shop to be totally in-the-know of what’s happening at VidCon Australia. To be extra super-duper up-to-date, follow us on twitter @VidCon.

WHERE IS THE THING I’M TRYING TO GO TO? You’ll find a map of the whole convention centre and surrounding areas on page 10. Each agenda item will have a room number or name next to it, so cross-reference that with the map and you’re good to go!

IS THERE WIFI? Yes, free WiFi will be available at the convention centre. However, with a few thousand people trying to connect at once, please keep in mind that it may not be the best.

HOW DO I SHARE MY EXPERIENCE AT VIDCON AUSTRALIA?

HOW CAN I MEET MY FAVORITE CREATOR?

WHERE IS THE LOST AND FOUND?

The Meet & Greet Lottery has already been drawn, and there isn’t a way to get into Meet & Greet lines without the proper wristband credentials. Remember, our Featured Creators will also be participating in content throughout VidCon, such as panels, Q&As, and other fun stuff. So don’t be sad if you didn’t draw your favorite creator in the Meet & Greet Lottery. Chances are you will still get to see them!

If you have found a lost item, please bring it to the VidCon Info Desk, located in the Plenary Foyer at the Melbourne Convention Centre. If you have lost an item, please go to the Info Desk to see if it has been returned!

MY MEET & GREET WRISTBAND WAS DAMAGED OR LOST. WHAT DO I DO? Damaged, broken, defaced or lost wristbands will not be honored or replaced! The wristbands are designed to withstand whatever damage you can manage to throw at them; they will last through the weekend without a doubt. If you lose them or they are damaged, you will not be able to attend your Meet & Greets. This is no joke!

WHERE CAN I SCORE A DELICIOUS MEAL? There are plenty of options in and around the convention centre, and you can check out the map in your guide for those locations.

I’M A PARENT/GUARDIAN. WHAT SHOULD I DO ALL WEEKEND?

BUT, WAIT, WHAT IF I LOST MY BADGE?

If you have purchased a VidCon Australia ticket, you can hang out with your child or go to content to learn more about this whole YouTube thing (if your child is under the age of 13, you must accompany them at all times). If you don’t have a VidCon badge, you will not be permitted inside the main event, but you can hang out around the convention centre or in the Parents’ Lounge located in the Expo Hall.

If you lose your badge, it will not be replaced, and without your badge you will not have access to VidCon’s event spaces at the convention centre. Don’t lose your badge! This is your final warning!

Tag everything with #VidConAUS. That includes your videos, Facebook posts, Instagrams, tweets, twitches, pins, posts, snaps, and chats.

DOs & DON’Ts DO have a great time! There are tons of things to do at VidCon, and we want you to experience as many of them as possible! Get out there and explore the Expo Hall, panel stages, lounges, activities, and all the other spontaneous awesomeness that happens at VidCon. DON’T freak out. Well...feel free to freak out, but do it in a way that doesn’t freak other people out. We are people of the internet, and people of the internet are oftentimes a shy, easily overwhelmed bunch. Please take this into consideration and show common courtesy to other attendees and Featured Creators by being respectful of others’ personal space and feelings. Walk, don’t run. Be sensible and safe in your enthusiasm! DO come prepared. Make a plan for what you want to see and do at VidCon Australia. Our mobile app lets you customize and save your personal schedule, so be sure to download it and take some time to pick out those can’t-miss panels

DON’T do anything that would force us to have to kick you out. We really do not want to do that. Be smart and have a good time. Think about how your actions impact others. If you do something not so smart, we will be sad. Things that are not very smart include: harassing other people, damaging or destroying property, stalking, trespassing, anything illegal, and so on. Also: pranks often make for some great videos, but when they are emotionally or physically hurtful/damaging, that is not okay. If we hear about anyone pranking in ways that are disruptive to the well-being of our guests or attendees, there’s a pretty strong chance it will get the prankster booted out of VidCon Australia.

and activities. Thoroughly browse the guide you’ve got in your hands this very instant! Also: wear comfortable shoes. Bring snacks. And... DON’T forget to eat! Or sleep! Take care of yourself. We know that VidCon Australia is packed with fun times and a dozen awesome things are always happening forever, but food and slumber are very much required for you to continue to properly function as a human being (and to have the best time possible). There are a ton of options for food in and around the convention centre. Plan breaks into your schedule for meals and rest. Get some sleep. And, most importantly—HYDRATE, FEEL GREAT.

DO let us know if you see any not-smart things happening. We want VidCon to be a safe space for everyone. If you witness someone doing something that’s not safe, please tell us. There are volunteers and staff everywhere who want to help, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you see anything worrying or dangerous.

DO make friends. We’re here because we REALLY love the same things. So take this weird and unique opportunity to meet new people—you’ve already got a lot in common with them. New friends make waiting in line THE BEST TIME EVER!!!

Some of James’ projects have included illustrating live for 200+ hours in a G-Star Raw shop window, painting an artwork with coffee, building a sculpture out of chocolate Tim Tams, and performing many more unusual artistic feats. For VidCon Australia, James will undertake a new ambitious artwork, simply titled “Deaf Graffiti,” which fuses the two unlikely counterparts of street art and sign language. Come see the art come to life in the Expo Hall over the course of the event.

MEET & GREET HALL The love is super mutual between creators and their fans. This is awesome, and it seems only natural that they should get to meet! At the same time, we want you to enjoy all that VidCon Australia has to offer rather than spend too much time waiting in line. All meet & greets have been ticketed ahead of time through a randomized lottery. The lottery has already been drawn, and there isn’t a way to get into the Meet & Greet Hall if you don’t have the appropriate wristband.

You will receive a wristband(s) when you pick up your badge at Registration if you were selected via the lottery. Damaged or defaced wristbands will not be honored, and lost wristbands will not be replaced. They’re specifically designed to withstand showers and parties and all kinds of stuff, so if you lose it or it is damaged, you’re out of luck. You will not get into your meet & greet session if you don’t have it. This is not a drill. Don’t lose your wristbands!

You can line up for each session ONE HOUR BEFORE the scheduled start time through ONE HALF HOUR AFTER the scheduled start time. If you show up earlier, security will tell you to go explore the rest of VidCon and come back later. Once inside the hall, match the number on your wristband to the booth numbers hanging above each line, and voila! You will be on your way to meet & greet heaven. Don’t forget to say hello to the person next to you in the queue zone—chances are you have a lot in common!

There are two types of meet & greets at VidCon. Please check the signage & listen to staff and volunteer instructions to help speed the process along. Professional Photographs: You will be given a card with a website link and an ID code when you get into line. After your photo is taken, you can go to that website, enter your code, and it will take you straight to your photos! No selfies at this session! Some creators may allow autographs—please listen to staff or volunteers for further instructions. Selfies and Autographs: Please respect a limit of up to 1 selfie and/or 1 item signed.

So, how can micro-videos be used be used to spark interest and visually appeal to the audience? The answer: Create candy content. SATURDAY 9:00 AM - 9:45 AM

Confronting Brand Safety and Trust Head On ROOM 216 Moderator: Peter Barrie (CEO/Co-Founder Datahat) David Lee (Head of Digital - Initiative) Mark Migliorini (GM Media - Sportsbet) Stephen Wright (Director - Programmatic Media) Advertising is under siege. Programmatically placed ads are in crisis, as major brands pull away from demand-driven marketplaces. Media multiplies exponentially, as 400 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. This session looks at the changing face of advertising, from spots and dots to creators and influencers, along with focusing on how to value context and quality, how media buying needs to change, and how to ensure brand safety in an increasingly programmatic world - both today and tomorrow.

Setting Up for Success ROOM 217 Brendan Gahan (Founder - Epic Signal) Everyone knows you can’t just make something “go viral.” But there are things you can do to increase the odds. Epic Signal lead Brendan Gahan will take you through his checklist of things to ask before any creative gets launched into the world and will discuss how to recognize ideas that have the best chance of catching on.

This session explores the new tools, strategies, and models to harness hundreds or even thousands of influencers at scale.

ROOM 217 Suzanne Nguyen (StringStory) Did you know that Snapchat is the fastest growing social network? With 200 million users and 10 billion daily video views, Snapchat is one of the fastest growing and most engaged social platforms. In this session, tech strategist and Snapchat star Suzanne Nguyen will show you how to get started on Snapchat for business, including strategies for building your following, examples of notable brands using the platform, why re-purposing Snapchat content across other platforms is important, and steps for creating micro-content for short form storytelling. Many of them would rather watch on a mobile phone, for example, even when the same content is playing on the big screen TV. Vertical video is preferred over horizontal. And the tap-tap-tap of scene consumption can frustrate even the most experienced marketers and producers. So how do you make sense of this new consumption world? This panel brings together experts in creating formats, shows and commercial content for GenZ, and shares their secrets of appealing to this frustrating audience. 11:00 AM - 11:10 AM

How do you think about building digital properties that work locally - and attract sponsors - but that will mostly be viewed outside the country? How do brands and agencies think about supporting local content, and how should creators think globally when developing new properties? ROOM 219/220 Moderator: Trent Blacket (Managing Director ROAR Asia Pacific) Jonathan Price (Co-Founder and Managing Director - SouthSouthWest) The digitization of media has rapidly turned into the digitization of everything - especially brands and products. Brand owners and managers are suddenly faced with consumers hungry for more than just amazing goods and services: they expect and demand a distinctive and unique experience that connects to them on a personal level. The line between product, marketing, and consumption has disappeared, to the point that creators and influencers are now at the forefront of product creation. SouthSouthWest is one of the leading brand experience agencies, helping iconic global brands including Nike, Google, and Kathmandu evaluate their brand beyond the physical and into the experiential realm. In this discussion Jonathan will talk about how product and brand creation is changing, the forces which are underpinning this change, how online video creators and influencers have become essential to the process, and what that means for agencies and brands now and over the next 10 years.

ABOUT ONLINE VIDEO VidCon has always been a worldwide event – I fondly remember spending a long time (perhaps too long) hanging out at the Century City Hyatt bar with creators from Australia and Europe at the second VidCon. After I started managing the Industry Track’s content, I discovered to my surprise that nearly a quarter of our attendees were from outside the US. So it made perfect sense, from my perspective, for VidCon to travel to you, rather than forcing you to come to us every year. Back in those early days of VidCon, when I was running one of the early MCNs, I didn’t realize just how different the business of digital video was in other parts of the world. Only after I started working with Discovery and getting to know some of the Nordic TV executives did I begin to understand that each country is, in many ways, as different to its neighbors as the US is to Mexico – at least when it comes to the video business. As I crafted this year’s inaugural Industry Track in Australia, I was lucky enough to draw on some truly insightful locals to help me build a world-class event.

We’ve brought together a great mix of experts and leaders from Australia and around the world to share their expertise and expand your vision. And my hope is that the insight you gather from spending two days with us will not only help you build a better, bigger, and more profitable business, but will also help those of us from the elsewhere understand your environment just a little bit better, too. The internet and digital video are global businesses, but it’s the individual differences between countries that I now find so fascinating and so worthy of celebrating. So, welcome to VidCon in Australia! We’re glad to be here, and I know you’ll learn a lot, laugh a lot, connect with old friends, and meet new ones. Let me know what you think! I can’t wait to do it again next year, bigger and better than ever. Oh, and if you see any of my advisory board running around, thank them – they are more responsible for this year’s great content than you can imagine.
