CUSD Digital Media Pathway The CUSD Digital Media Pathway is the result of a major partnership between the Compton Unified School District, Dakar Media and major supporters. The Academy Pathway will include the broad areas of Design, Visual, Media, Production and Managerial Arts.

CUSD will articulate curricula with local colleges and capitalize on the student use of the CUSD Channel 26 TV studio/station as an active learning lab. Dakar Media will provide access to entertainment, digital content mentors, speakers, related industry field trips, and internships to support student learning opportunities. Work-­‐based learning (WBL) for students in the pathways will follow the st Linked Learning model and Partnership for 21 Century Skills recommendations. Formal support from industry partners will be sought to ensure continuous collaboration and sustainability. The goal of the academy is to effective prepare students for immediate employment in these industries upon graduation or enter pathway-­‐connected college/university programs.

CUSD Career Technical Education Course Descriptions DESIGN, VISUAL, AND MEDIA ARTS PATHWAY Computer Animation/1

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This competency-­‐based course is the first in a sequence of two designed for computer-­‐based animation. It provides students technical instruction and practical experience in setting up and using electronic equipment for capturing, rendering, digitizing, and storing of still and digitized images, and the laying out and rendering of digitized images on a computer. It covers two-­‐dimensional paint and imaging techniques, three-­‐dimensional animation, creating of mattes and digital composing, as well as creation, compression, and encoding of still and animated images for use in Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) documents, and recording of finished materials to CD-­‐ROM. This course also includes specific instruction in portfolio development and employability skills. The competencies in this course are aligned with the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards.

Computer Animation/2

It provides students with technical instruction and practical experience in fundamental advertising principles, vector-­‐based logo design and illustrations, desktop imaging and desktop publishing applications in pre-­‐press production, electronic file management, website advertising, project presentation and delivery, and proofreading and editing. This course also covers resource management and employability skills. Photography

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This competency-­‐based course is the first in a sequence of two designed for photography. It provides students with technical instruction and practical experience through executing artistic standards in photography. Instruction for the first half of the course includes an orientation, the history of photography, portfolio creation and evaluation, art standards, the camera as an eye, the care of camera/lens/other equipment, the different types of cameras and formats, and composition in photography. It also features the basics of image exposure, image exposure with film and the digital file, and the techniques for processing, printing, and print mounting of photographs for exhibits. The second half of the course covers a review of the art standards and portfolio development, advanced photographic concepts, the physics in photography, and internet research. It focuses on portrait, commercial product, and landscape photography as well as pictorialist photography. It also covers portfolio evaluation/employability skills and resource management. The competencies in this course are aligned with the California Common Core Content Standards and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This competency-­‐based course is the second in a sequence of two designed for photography.

Instruction includes an introduction and the scope of commercial photography. The focus of the course is portrait, event, closeEup food, and macro photography as well as shooting metal and glass objects. It also covers portfolio creation and evaluation, employability and entrepreneurial skills, and a review of resource management. This course teaches students the concepts of computer programming, with an emphasis on game design and development. In the first semester, students will learn how to program and design several different types of games using the latest technology available which may include Flash animation. In the second semester, students will learn the fundamentals of level design, model creation, coding, and 3D rendering using an industry standard 3D gaming engine The course requires students to design and program several different games, as well as learn the process of level design in a 3D game world. Integrated into the course are technical writing assignments, workplace communication, mathematics in programming, and technology.

PREREQUISITES: Enrollment requires permission from the student’s high school counselor. Computer literacy and Algebra course completion preferred.

PRODUCTION AND MANAGERIAL ARTS PATHWAY Performing Artist

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This competency-­‐based course is designed to provide students with training as performers in the arts, media, and entertainment industry. Instruction includes units on skills required and employment opportunities available in the field. Emphasis is placed on the history of the theater, the performing and acting process, playwriting, set design, lighting design, sound design, costume design, make up design, directing and producing, auditions, agents, unions, culminating performance, and résumé and portfolio preparation. The competencies in this course are aligned with the California Common Core Content Standards and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards.

This course is approved by the University of California as an ‘f’ course for one-­‐year credit.

PREREQUISITES: Enrollment requires students to be at least sixteen years of age, in eleventh grade or beyond, and with parental/guardian approval, if younger than 18 years of age.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This competency-­‐based course provides students with the technical instruction and practical experience in workplace safety, audio production and technology, lighting technology, rigging technology, carpentry, production management, tour management, resource management, and employability skills. Instructional emphasis is placed on the history, architecture, and components of stage design. Time is devoted on the creation and evaluation of scenic, costume, makeup, lighting, and sound designs as well as on the policies and practices of effective stage and house management. Topics also include an orientation, trade mathematics, resource management, employability skills, and e-­‐portfolio production. It also includes the basics of job shadowing, internships, and job placement. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This competency-­‐based course is the last in a sequence of three designed for video production. It provides students with the technical instruction and practical experiences for aspiring video production supervisors in the pre-­‐production, production, and post-­‐production stages of TV and video projects. It focuses on the supervisory tasks involved in camera, sound, and lighting equipment use, soft/hard/feature story development, storyboard creation, studio and field production, and video story editing and transmitting.
