En el corazón de Ciutadella, Menorca, existe un lugar con una historia profunda y fascinante que data de hace dos siglos. El nuevo restaurante Flamante, la propuesta más novedosa de la restauración menorquina, es más que un establecimiento de comidas y copas. Este lugar es el epicentro de una historia familiar rica y conmovedora, que abarca varias generaciones y dos continentes.

La historia del local y la esencia de Flamante se remonta al año 1838, cuando la amistad entre Joan de Sa Costa, un trabajador del campo de clase baja y el señor Gil de Guevara, de Ciutadella, enterrado en Sant Francesc, les lleva a fundar la primera taberna de Menorca. Una gran hoguera era el epicentro del lugar, en el que siempre ardía una flama en honor a la celebración de la vida.

Fueron Joan y de Guevara quienes insuflaron en los clientes de la taberna un profundo amor por la vida y la alegría. Un amor que logró sobrevivir generaciones y que tiene como protagonista a la única hija de Joan.

In the heart of Ciutadella, Menorca, there is a place with a deep and fascinating history that dates back two centuries. The new restaurant Flamante, the most innovative proposal in Menorcan cuisine, is more than just a food and drink establishment. This place is the epicenter of a rich and touching family history that spans several generations and two continents.

The story of the venue and the essence of Flamante go back to the year 1838 when the friendship between Joan de Sa Costa, a low-class field worker, and Mr. Gil de Guevara, from Ciutadella, buried in Sant Francesc, led them to establish the first tavern in Menorca. A large bonfire was the centerpiece of the place, where a flame always burned in honor of the celebration of life.

It was Joan and Guevara who instilled in the tavern's customers a deep love for life and joy. A love that managed to survive generations and had as its protagonist Joan's only daughter.

Desde muy jovencita, Ana María buscó fortuna en la península, alcanzando gran fama como vedette. Apodada La Diamante, Ana María huyó de España al inicio de la Guerra Civil. Sin más lazos que una profunda tristeza por no ver más a su padre, Ana María sobrevivió, como pudo, en la gran Nueva York.. Sin embargo, su encantó logró enamorar a un gran empresario de la ciudad, Sir Eduard, con quién tuvo una única hija.

Esa única hija, Teresa, creció en la sombra del misterio, sin saber nada de su madre, que murió al poco de dar a luz. Sir Eduard decidió criarla en Nueva York, donde Teresa se graduó con honores en Periodismo. Pero el secreto de su ascendencia, revelado por una anciana en el funeral de su padre, la dejó atónita, y no dió crédito a la anciana.

From a very young age, Ana María sought her fortune on the mainland, achieving great fame as a vedette. Nicknamed La Diamante, Ana María fled Spain at the beginning of the Civil War. With no ties other than a deep sadness for not seeing her father again, Ana María survived as best she could in the great New York. However, her charm managed to captivate a prominent businessman in the city, Sir Eduard, with whom she had a single daughter.

That single daughter, Teresa, grew up in the shadow of mystery, knowing nothing about her mother, who died shortly after giving birth. Sir Eduard decided to raise her in New York, where Teresa graduated with honors in Journalism. But the secret of her ancestry, revealed by an elderly woman at her father's funeral, left her stunned, and she didn't believe the woman's words.

Sin embargo, un documental de una anciana hablando de su amistad con La Diamante la puso en un camino de autodescubrimiento. Empezó a buscar pistas sobre la veracidad de las palabras de la anciana, en un intento de revelar su verdadera historia. Sin embargo, su investigación se vio obstaculizada por el estallido de la pandemia de COVID-19. Antes de su fallecimiento en 2021, Teresa reveló su búsqueda a sus hijas mellizas, Carla y Margarita, quienes juraron continuar su búsqueda. Así fue como, viajando a Menorca en 2022, las hermanas lograron encontrar la taberna de su bisabuelo.

Allí conocieron a los actuales gerentes del local que tenían un proyecto de restauración en el mismo lugar donde, casi 200 años atrás, su bisabuelo Joan mantenía encendida la flama de su taberna.

However, a documentary featuring an elderly woman talking about her friendship with La Diamante set her on a path of self-discovery. She began searching for clues about the truthfulness of the old woman's words, in an attempt to uncover her true story. However, her investigation was hindered by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Before her death in 2021, Teresa revealed her search to her twin daughters, Carla and Margarita, who swore to continue her quest. This led them to travel to Menorca in 2022, where the sisters managed to find their great-grandfather's tavern.

There they met the current managers of the establishment, who had a restoration project in the same place where, almost 200 years ago, their great-grandfather Joan kept the flame of his tavern alive.

Tras conocer la historia, juntos, decidieron restaurar el local y honrar su historia familiar. Tras meses de preparación, la taberna, ubicada en el puerto de Ciutadella, renace de nuevo como “Flamante” (en memoria a la “Flama” i a “La Diamante”), un lugar en el que se celebra, además de la buena comida y el buen beber, la flama de la vida que volverá a arder después de haber estado apagada todo un siglo.

After learning the story, together, they decided to restore the venue and honor their family history. After months of preparation, the tavern, located in the port of Ciutadella, is reborn as "Flamante" (in memory of the "Flama" and "La Diamante"), a place where, in addition to good food and drink, the flame of life will once again burn after being extinguished for a whole century.
