There are three ways to register: Call us at 773.445.3838, register in-person at our front desk, or go online at beverlyartcenter.org The BAC encourages registering in advance. The BAC may cancel a class that does not reach minimum enrollment 24 hours before the first class of the session. While the BAC does accept signups the day classes begin, patrons should be aware that registration may be denied if the class is full or has been canceled due to low enrollment.

There are applicable fees added on top of the event and registration cost.

Registration deadlines:

All classes that meet the minimum number of enrollment will remain open for registration until the end of the first week of each session. All enrollment after the first week will be charged a $10.00 late fee. Any classes that do not meet minimum enrollment (4 students) may be canceled before the first day of the session.

General Information

Payment Plans

The BAC offers a payment plan to patrons with a minimum purchase of $250 per session. Patrons pay 50% down upon registration. The Fall 1 deadline is September 18th, 2023. The Fall 2 deadline is November 13th, 2023. Payment plans must be made in person at the front desk. Payments may be made by cash, check, or credit/debit card. Full payment may be made anytime prior to the fifth week. Payment plans require a signed credit card authorization form. If the patron drops the class at any time during the session, charges will still apply. Membership discounts and sale prices apply.

Multiple Child Discount

The BAC offers a sibling discount of 5% off the member or non-member tuition price for the second sibling in the same workshop or camp. All siblings following the second sibling receive 10% off tuition price for the same workshop or camp. No sibling discounts will be applied to private lessons.

Photography Release

By registering for a class, the patron grants the Beverly Arts Center permission to photograph or video their child’s participation in the Beverly Arts Center’s education programs. The customer also grants the BAC permission to use their or their child’s likeness in a promotional capacity including, (but not limited to), print materials, web site, online or out of home media, and other mediums now or later developed; as well as permission to share photography and video including their or their child’s likeness for use by media publication and institutions that fund the BAC’s operations and programs.

Tuition and Refunds CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

Full tuition is refunded only for classes or workshops canceled by the BAC. Students who wish to drop a class after registering but before the first date of the class will be charged a fee of $25.00. No refunds will be offered once a workshop has begun, even if the student is absent for the first day of class. No make-up class will be offered if a student misses a class.

No refunds will be given if the classes move to a virtual platform. If the patron no longer wishes to participate, patrons will receive a class credit for a future session to be used within one year’s time. Registration ends the second full week of

class. Classes may be canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. For classes paid via invoice, customer acknowledges that remaining payments must be made according to the set payment plan. The balance must be paid in full by due date given. If payment is not paid in full on given due date, patrons will not be able to participate in any future registrations. Registration fees will not be prorated for classes missed during the session, nor will they be applied to another session. Not attending a class does NOT constitute an official withdrawal from a course or cancellation of tuition or fees.

LIVE EVENTS

No refunds or exchanges will be honored once the tickets have been purchased. Should the Beverly Arts Center postpone an event, the original tickets will be honored for the new date. Should the Beverly Arts Center cancel an event, a full refund will be given, minus service fees.

Health and Wellbeing

For the health and wellbeing of all, it is essential that individuals are in good health when attending performances, camps, private lessons, classes, or workshops at the BAC. The Beverly Arts Center follows Covid policy set by the City of Chicago Department of Health, and registration for classes and/or attendance at BAC events or gatherings is an assertion that you (and/or your child) have read and are compliant with the Beverly Arts Center’s current Covid Mediation Policy, available on the BAC website. In registering for any School of Fine Arts offering or attending BAC performances listed in this catalog, you (and/or your child) are asserting that the Beverly Arts Center is not liable for COVID-19 transmission in the building. For the most current city information as it pertains to Covid mediation, please visit chicago.gov

SOFA Scholarships!

The Beverly Arts Center is pleased to offer a Scholarship Program for the School of Fine Arts. Families may now apply for a partial scholarship to cover up to 50% of tuition for their School of Fine Arts classes and camps. Once granted a BAC scholarship, it is eligible towards all SOFA programming from September-August of the respective school year. Scholarships do not apply to Youth Theatre productions.

To apply for SOFA Scholarships, please contact sofa@beverlyartcenter.org to schedule a meeting to verify eligibility. There are three levels of scholarships:

Eligibility for each tier is based on Gross Family Income from the 2022 calendar year and family size. No further discounts may be applied to SOFA classes once a scholarship has been received.

Our dance classes for grades Pre-K through 12th combine the pricing of the Fall 1 & Fall 2 sessions (16 weeks) and will culminate in a recital. This package includes a costume fee and two tickets to the recital.

In our Ballet sequence (Beginning with Twinkle Toe Toddlers and followed by Creative Movement), students will learn the foundation of dance by learning how a dance class operates, basic positions, warm-up and cool-down skills, and introductory techniques. All dancers must wear pink leotards, pink tights, pink ballet shoes with hair off their face or white t-shirt, black sweatpants, and black ballet shoes.

Our Combo classes blend two styles of dance: basic fundamentals of ballet and tap. Students will develop creativity, imagination, and body awareness in Combo Intro for students in grades K-1st. In Combo I, students in grades 2-4 will explore building balance, precision, and working in an ensemble. Students may wear any colored leotard with tights, pink ballet shoes, black tap shoes, with hair off of their face, or a white t-shirt with any color sweatpants.

Once at the intermediate/ advanced level, dancers will strengthen and refine their ballet technique with the skills needed to begin pointe in PrePointe. All dancers must wear pink leotards, pink tights, pink ballet shoes with hair off their face, or a white t-shirt, black sweatpants, and black ballet shoes. Dancers in Pre-Pointe will need to wear pointe shoes.

A class for the rebels! Founded by Martha Graham, modern based its roots in ballet and then went against it. Class will emphasize the use of the floor, a focus on breath, body awareness, and strengthening the body. A melting pot of dance styles, Lyrical embodies various aspects of traditional Indian, ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Students will work towards perfecting their artistry through self-discovery as a dancer by focusing on technique, strength, and flexibility. A note about Adult Dance classes: All Adult Dance classes offer a $25.00 Drop-In Fee. Students wishing to drop-in on an Adult Dance class will need to purchase a drop-in pass through the phone or register in-person. Students must show their receipt to the instructor.

◆ CHICAGO-STYLE STEPPIN’

Come with a partner and enjoy an evening on the dance floor steppin’. A dance-style native to Chicago and part of the Western swing family, Steppin’ is a social dance that requires teamwork, footwork, and improvisation as partners work together on the 6 or 8 count. Dance attire should be comfortable. It is recommended that shoes have support and smooth soles: leather or suede. If wearing heels, a flat bottom to 3.5 inch heel is recommended.

Dance while being your own percussion! Adult Tap students will focus on tap technique: building basic tap terminology, weight changes, musicality, and rhythm. Adult Tap II students will focus on advanced tap technique and terminology. All Adult Tap students should wear comfortable clothing with pants ending above the ankle and black tap shoes.

◆ BALLET

In Adult Ballet, students will build basic ballet structure, technique, and strength. Close-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows for proper instruction is recom mended. Dance attire is not required. No costumes or tutus, please. Students should wear ballet shoes for ballet classes, howev er, socks are also permitted.

Sunrise Yoga is a senior yoga class specifically designed to cater to the needs and abilities of older adults, typically those aged 60 and above. It is a gentle and accessible form of yoga that focuses on promoting physical well-being, flexibility, balance, and mental relaxation. Students are required to bring a yoga mat to class.

◆ WRITING

Good, expressive writing is a useful skill that comes with practice, persistence and a measure of vulnerability. In Writing for Seniors: Creative Nonfiction, Matthew Blake will cover writing practices that can help express the writer’s feelings and thoughts, evaluate and describe a situation, or articulate a unique point-of-view. This class incorporates teachings from both memoirists and fiction writers as well as journalists, critics, and science writers to bring creativity and common sense onto the page. Students will write in class, learn methods to write outside of class, and continue to keep writing.

Group piano is an ideal way to try out the piano and build a foundation for continued individual study in piano or other instruments. Students learn orientation to the keyboard, music reading skills, and simple melodies in an age appropriate manner. Headphones are used to promote concentration. ◆ ENSEMBLE

Introductory ensemble class where students will learn how to play as a group playing basic classic rock songs. Learning songs from the 60’s all the way to today’s hits, students will learn how to listen, groove, solo, and learn the fundamentals of being a rock band. Class is open to vocal, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, piano, and violin. All students will need to have basic chord knowledge and at least a year of instruction previously on their instrument. Applicants must audition. To schedule an audition and receive more audition requirements and details, contact the SOFA TEAM via email at sofa@beverlyartcenter.org.

Registration for this audition will not cost anything. If students are accepted, registrants can purchase the class after approval.

Actors will gain skills in public speaking and artistic expression through intermediate-level theatrical technique, character creation, and social-emotional development. In Acting for Teens, teenagers in 8th-12th grade can explore their artistic side in a judgment-free environment. Through vocal exercises, movement, and character development, teens will learn to express themselves and embrace their unique voice. Teen Voices: Playwriting will explore the writer and actor’s ability to construct plot lines, dialogue, character development, and story arc. A note about supplies: The Beverly Arts Center will provide all visual arts materials unless otherwise noted.

Students will learn about the basics of working with clay, including hand techniques and glazing, and create their own air-dry projects in Art for Kids: Claymakers Studio. Whether creating decorative designs on pottery or clay figurines, the class is a creative, fun way to explore the introductory elements of handbuilding in clay. In Art for Kids: Painting, students will explore their unique artistic expressions while learning all about color theory, brushstroke techniques, and the different types of paint used in this medium. In Comics for Kids: Myths & Monsters, students can bring to life and spin a story with their favorite legendary creatures or create a new beast to spook their friends with! The class will learn the art of visual storytelling and great comic dialogue. In Comics for Kids: Classic Video Games, students will draw and create original stories based on their favorite video game characters. Art for Preteens and Teens: Ceramics will engage students using raw clay, basic ceramics tools, and glazes. Projects focus on techniques involving handbuilding and wheel throwing. Art for Preteens and Teens: Painting will explore the different subjects of painting, like still lifes, portraits, and landscapes, using acrylic, watercolor, and oil paints to develop their own artistic style. In Comics for Preteens & Teens: Americana Creatures, students will write stories and draw comics revolving around the American folktales of Bigfoot, Mothman, Skinwalkers, and much more. In Art for Teens: Digital Photography, teenagers will look at the world through a broader lens and focus on the fundamentals of using a digital single lens reflex camera in order to produce well balanced, properly exposed, successful images.

Embrace your inner Kahlo or O’Keefe in Art for Adults: Painting, a guided open studio course, or join us in the Ceramics Studio for Art For Adults: Beginning Ceramics where work happens on the potter’s wheel or table, using hand building and wheel throwing techniques. For those who are already proficient in the art of ceramics, Art for Adults: Intermediate/Advanced Ceramics continues to offer students the environment to hone their skills with more detailed and stylized pottery. Art for Adults: Fused Glass teaches students to score, cut, and arrange glass while the kiln does the rest to create window art, jewelry, bowls, platters, and more. In Art for Adults: Stained Glass, adults will get a chance to explore the world of Stained Glass using techniques like glass cutting, shaping, and grinding, as well as the heating process called soldering. Students will be guided through a step-by-step process, forming intricate stained glass designs, patterns, and pictures. In Art for Adults: Illustration, students will learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting using pencils, pens, markers, brushes, acrylics and watercolors. Students will bring visual storytelling to life and be encouraged to find their unique artistic style through techniques like cross-hatching, stippling, and color blending, and explore the different applications of illustrations in children’s books, advertising, and cartooning.
