Session Dates

Winter (10-Week Session): Begins Monday, January 8th, 2024 and ends on Saturday, March 16th, 2024 Spring (10-Week Session): Begins Monday, March 18th, 2024 and ends on Thursday, May 23rd, 2024*

*There are no classes Saturday, May 25th,

2024. Spring session Saturday classes will end on Saturday, May 18th, 2024, and are prorated accordingly. The BAC encourages registering in advance. The BAC may cancel a class that does not reach minimum enrollment 24 hours before the first class of the session. While the BAC does accept sign-ups the day classes begin, patrons should be aware that registration may be unavailable if the class is full or has been canceled due to low enrollment. There are applicable fees added on top of the event and registration cost.

Registration deadlines: All classes that meet the minimum number of enrollment will remain open for registration until the end of the first week of each session. There will be no late registration fee. However, no classes can be prorated should a student want to enroll after the registration deadline. Any classes that do not meet minimum enrollment may be canceled before the first day of the session.

GENERAL INFORMATION Payment Plans The BAC offers a payment plan to patrons with a minimum purchase of $190 a session. Patrons pay 50% down upon registration. The Winter deadline is February 3rd, 2024. The Spring deadline is April 20th, 2024. Payment plans must be made in person at the front desk. Payments may be made by cash, check, or credit/debit card. Full payment may be made any time prior to the fifth week of the session. Payment plans require a signed credit card authorization form. If the patron drops the class at any time during the session, charges will still apply. Membership discounts and sale prices apply.

classes paid via invoice, the patron acknowledges that remaining payments must be made according to the set payment plan. The balance must be paid in full by the due date given. If payment is not paid in full by the given due date, patrons will not be able to participate in any future registrations until the outstanding balance is paid. Registration fees will not be prorated for classes missed during the session, nor will they be applied to another session. Not attending a class does NOT constitute an official withdrawal from a course or cancelation of tuition or fees.

Multiple Child Discount The BAC offers a sibling discount of 5% off the member or non-member tuition price for the second sibling in the same class or camp. All siblings following the second sibling receive 10% off tuition price for the same class or camp. No sibling discounts will be applied to private lessons.

Live Events No refunds or exchanges will be honored once tickets have been purchased. Should the Beverly Arts Center postpone an event, the original tickets will be honored for a new date. Should the Beverly Arts Center cancel an event, full refunds will be given, minus service fees.

SOFA Multi-Class Membership For only $30.00 a year, patrons may purchase a membership that applies to all SOFA classes. This membership gives a patron 15% off all classes when purchasing 2 classes or more (and when purchased at the same time). This discount is only valid for classes in the same session (i.e. 2 classes purchased for the Winter Session at the same time will give a patron 15% off the final price) and limited to one household. This membership can be purchased through the Front Desk only. Membership does not apply to private lessons.

SOFA Private Lesson Policies Student Absence Make-Ups: There are no make-ups offered for Private Lessons due to a student’s absence. This includes all religious and federal holidays where the School of Fine Arts is in session. Exceptions may be made in the case of an emergency pending the instructor’s availability and the instructor’s approval. In this circumstance, the make-up lesson will need to occur during the current session. Make-up lessons cannot be made up from a past session.

Photography Release By registering for a class, the patron grants the Beverly Arts Center permission to photograph or video their child’s participation in the Beverly Arts Center’s education programs. The patron also grants the BAC permission to use their or their child’s likeness for use by media publication and institutes that fund the BAC’s operations and programs. Tuition & Refunds / CLASSES Full tuition is refunded only for classes or workshops canceled by the BAC. No refunds will be offered once a class has begun, even if the student is absent for the first day of class. No make-up class will be offered if a student misses a class.

If the patron no longer wishes to participate in a class they are registered for, they will receive a class credit to be used on another SOFA offering within one year’s time. Registration ends the second full week of class. Classes may be canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. For THE BEVERLY SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS WINTER/SPRING 2024

Teacher Absence Make-Ups: A make-up lesson will be scheduled if an instructor is absent for a pre-scheduled lesson. Should a lesson not be possible due to availability or scheduling conflicts, a credit will be applied to the student’s BAC account. Health and Wellbeing For the health and wellbeing of all, it is essential that individuals are in good health when attending performances, camps, private lessons, or classes at the BAC. The Beverly Arts Center follows COVID policy set by the City of Chicago Department of Health, and registration for classes and/or attendance at BAC events or gatherings is an assertion that you (and/or your child) have read and are compliant with the Beverly Art Center’s current COVID mediation policy, which is available on the BAC’s website. In registering for any School of Fine Arts offering or attending BAC performances listed in this catalog, you (and/or your child) are asserting that the Beverly Arts Center is not liable for COVID-19 transmission in the building. For the most current city information as it pertains to COVID mediation, please visit chicago.gov.


Behavioral Policy (“No-Bullying/Harassment Policy”) The Beverly Arts Center is privileged to have a diverse membership base. Everyone is welcome at the BAC, and the BAC has a strict no-bullying/harassment policy. Patrons (and/or their children) who are found to be in violation of the no-bullying policy may be subject to disciplinary procedures, up to and including removal from SOFA classes, events, or workshops without refund. In registering for any School of Fine Arts offering or attending any BAC performance listed in this catalog, you (and/or your child) are asserting that you have read and agreed to this policy, and that the Beverly Arts Center has the right to remove you (and/or your child) from a SOFA or BAC offering if they find that you (and/or your child) have violated the Behavioral Policy. The implementation of this policy will be completed by the SOFA admin team, Teaching Artists, or any other BAC Staff member deemed appropriate to judge whether or not the policy has been violated. ONE-DAY WORKSHOPS Looking for the perfect girl’s trip or date night activity? Interested in art classes but not ready to commit yet? These one-off workshops taught by our SOFA instructors are the perfect opportunity to dip your toe into something new! Plus, young actors and their parents can get ahead of the game by taking a Theatre Audition Workshop before the next Youth Theatre Audition! Fused Glass with Kat Huddleston A series of One-Day Workshops with incredible local artist Kat Huddleston*! In January & February, create a one-ofa-kind piece of jewelry for yourself or your sweetheart using Dichroic glass. In March, celebrate the changing seasons with a Fused Glass Spring Scene. Then during April’s showers, prepare your garden for May’s flowers by creating a Plant Stake. Classes are $50 per person and are a perfect group or individual activity. Theatre for Kids: Preparing for Performance: Youth Theatre Audition Clinics Audition Workshop Our thriving Youth Theatre series is perfect for students who are brand new to the stage and “old” pros who’ve been performing since they were in diapers. These one-day workshops are highly recommended for all students who are planning on enrolling in a Youth Theatre course, or students who are planning on auditioning at theatres around town. BAC instructors Emily Nelson (Youth Theatre Manager & Associate Artistic Director), MorganEliza Cooper, and Kara Ryan (BAC Education Coordinators and Theatre Teaching Artists) will lead students through the audition process from beginning to end, including feedback and recommendations for audition material. Grown Ups are encouraged to observe the class and stick around for a question-and-answer session about theatre and audition etiquette and the best steps to ensure their students have a fun rehearsal process!* *Students ages 10 & Up should attend class prepared to sing their favorite audition song and recite a poem or monologue, memorized

Good, expressive writing is a useful skill that comes with practice, persistence and a measure of vulnerability. In Writing for Seniors: Creative Nonfiction, Matthew Blake will cover writing practices that can help express the writer’s feelings and thoughts, evaluate

and describe a situation, or articulate a unique point-of-view. This class incorporates teachings from both memoirists and fiction writers as well as journalists, critics, and science writers to bring creativity and common sense onto the page. Through a combination of in-class writing exercises and methodology, students will learn all they need to flourish as independent writers. We’ve simplified our Dance class process: Sign up for a 10 week session, show up to class, and get foot-loose and fancy-free!

All dance classes that participate in the recital will have a $60 Costume Fee to cover the cost of costumes, production, and staffing for rehearsals and performances. These payments will be due on February 3rd (Winter) and/or April 20th (Spring).

In our Ballet sequence (Beginning with Twinkle Toe Toddlers and followed by Creative Movement), students will learn the foundation of dance by learning how a dance class operates, basic positions, warm-up and cool-down skills, and introductory techniques. All dancers must wear pink leotards, pink tights, pink ballet shoes with hair off their face or white t-shirt, black sweatpants, and black ballet shoes.

COMBO

Our Combo classes blend two styles of dance: basic fundamentals of ballet and tap. Students will develop creativity, imagination, and body awareness in Combo Intro for students in grades K-1st. In Combo I, students in grades 2-4 will explore building balance, precision, and working in an ensemble. Students may wear any colored leotard with tights, pink ballet shoes, black tap shoes, with hair off of their face, or a white t-shirt with any color sweatpants. Dance while being your own percussion! Students learn rhythm and musicality through across the floor exercises and choreography in Tap. BROADWAY

Broadway Dance for Kids is the study of classic and contemporary broadway-style choreography. Broadway dance combines elements of ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary and Hip-Hop. Students will gain an eclectic understanding of the multiple dance styles that have come to make up Broadway and be better prepared for their next musical or audition dance call.

Students in Jazz will develop and build on jazz techniques like passing, turns, leaps, and exciting choreography. MODERN

A class for the rebels! Founded by Martha Graham, Modern based its roots in ballet and then went against it. Class will emphasize the use of the floor, a focus on breath, body awareness, and strengthening the body. LYRICAL

A melting pot of dance styles, Lyrical embodies various aspects of traditional Indian, ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Students will work towards perfecting their artistry through self-discovery as a dancer by focusing on technique, strength, and flexibility. Lyrical students need comfortable dance bottoms, a solid colored leotard, barefeet (socks if necessary), and hair off their face, or a white t-shirt with solid colored sweat-pants. ADULT

In Adult Ballet, students will build basic ballet structure, technique, and strength. Close-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows for proper instruction is recommended. Dance attire is not required. No costumes or tutus, please. Students should wear ballet shoes for ballet classes, however, socks are also permitted.

A note about Adult Dance classes: All Adult Dance classes offer a $25.00 Drop-In Fee. Students wishing to drop-in on an Adult Dance class will need to purchase a drop-in pass through the phone or register in-person. Students must show their receipt to the instructor. Adults who partake in the recital will be required to pay a one-time $15.00 recital fee to cover the cost of staffing and production for the dress rehearsal & performances. This fee will be due on February 3rd (Winter) and/or April 20th (Spring). Adults will coordinate with their instructor to determine costumes.

TAP

Dance while being your own percussion! Adult Tap students will focus on tap technique: building basic tap terminology, weight changes, musicality, and rhythm. Adult Tap II students will focus on advanced tap technique and terminology. In our Comics series, students ages 5-10 will explore popular characters and worlds and utilize their imaginations to create their own. Comics classes will have seasonal themes, and kids will expand their reading, writing, drawing, and storytelling skills. In the Winter, students can take Demigods, Olympians, & Beyond and create their own universes inspired by the release of a certain son-of-Poseidon’s TV show and different cultural mythologies. In Spring, students can celebrate all things superhero in Marvelous Mutants. Kids can get their hands dirty and their imaginations flourishing in our Visual Arts classes. Students will learn about the basics of working

with clay, including hand techniques and glazing, and create their own air-dry projects in Claymakers Studio. Whether creating decorative designs on pottery or clay figurines, the class is a creative, fun way to explore the introductory elements of handbuilding in clay. In Art for Kids: Painting, students will explore their unique artistic expressions while learning all about color theory, brushstroke techniques, and the different types of paint used in this medium. In our seasonal offerings, kids can embrace their “Ken-ergy” and passion for fashion by building dolls in Dolls by Design in Winter, and then pivot to the world of crochet to give their doll a perfect animal sidekick by taking Crochet Critters in Spring. Spring’s theme is Wakanda & Other Brave New Worlds, a class that celebrates some of the coolest magical worlds that can be found in comics, movies, and literature. get a chance to explore the world of Stained Glass using techniques like glass cutting, shaping, and grinding, as well as the heating process called soldering. Students will be guided through a step-by-step process, forming intricate stained glass designs, patterns, and pictures. In Art for Adults: Illustration, students will learn the fundamentals of drawing using pencils, pens, markers, and watercolors. Students will bring visual storytelling to life and be encouraged to find their unique artistic style through techniques like cross-hatching, stippling, and color blending, and explore the different applications of illustrations in children’s books, editorial design, advertising, and cartooning. In Art for Adults: Nurture & Create, a mixedmedia visual arts class, students will have the opportunity to nurture themselves, their emotions and their processes whilst they create art. Incorporating mindfulness and grounding exercises, the instructor will guide students to create artwork through a therapeutic lens. Utilizing this intentional approach allows for creation that is more authentic and unique to each individual student. Through the use of different mediums and art techniques, such as handbuilding with clay, collaging and breath work drawing, students will be able to learn and build on their creative processes.
