Message from our market beef leader:

Welcome to our 1st Topline 4-H Multi Club Show & Sale! 4-H is growing and it is exciting to see more clubs start up across communities. More clubs means more projects, more community service, more opportunities for youth. Our founding families span from Drayton Valley, across Thorsby & Calmar, out to Armena. It’s been exciting to see these members come together, share ideas and learn to do by doing together. These members are keen; it’s clear to see the hours they have put in feeding, leading and dialing these steers in just right. The Show & Sale is a celebration of their achievements. We look forward to you joining us June 1st. We have a fantastic set of steers for sale our members would love to show you in person. If you have any questions about purchasing a 4-H animal personally or for a business, please reach out to myself or one of our leaders!

Message from our sheep leader:

This is Bret’s first year as our Market Lamb Leader and is also the assistant Beef leader. Bret is a third generation 4H member and a second generation 4H leader. He has raised and shown sheep for most of his life. He and his wife Kendra raise Maine Anjou and Shorthorn Cattle near Drayton Valley.

Message from our president:

This year was definetly a learning curve for everyone. I thought starting a new club would be easy, but it is far from that. I am super proud of how far me and the other members have came this year. Also we conquered a new species. I had no idea what I was doing but we had amazing people to help us learn (Props to Bret for everything sheep related). The quality in this club from people to livestock is outstanding. By supporting us, you are supporting the future leaders of this world.

Carsen Belair

Junior Age: 10

Lamb Project Name: BAAn jovi

Breed: Suffolk X

Hello, my name is Carsen Belair. I am in Gr 5 at Thorsby Elementary School. I am also the current treasurer for the Topline 4-H Multi Club. This year I chose to do a market lamb project because I was interested to learn about a new animal. My favourite hobbies are dirt biking, playing basketball and this year I’m also playing rugby. I joined 4-H to gain some more knowledge about raising farm animals. This will be my first show and sale and I am very excited to be a part of it.

Kayden Belair Intermediate

Age: 12

Lamb Project Name: DesBAAcito

Breed: Suffolk X

Hi my name is Kayden Belair, I am in Grade seven at Thorsby Junior Senior High School. I love spending time with my 4-H project and taking care of him. Some of the things you can find me doing other than 4-H is freestyle skiing and tending to my flock of chickens. I have been in the Edmonton Freestyle Ski Club for four years. At our farm I do have a flock of sixteen chickens, and they are also a great learning animal. It has been so fun teaching them how to ride a dirtbike and horses! As only being a fourth year member in 4-H, there are many “likes” and “want to try” parts of 4-H. One of the things that I really like about 4-H is the amount of people and knowledge that you get to meet and learn. The summer camps are some of my favourites, and the people you meet there are ones that you will never forget. Some of the things in future years that I would like to try are different projects such as a chicken project. I think it would be so fun to start them as young birds and raise them. I am so excited to meet more people in 4-H and I hope you have a great rest of your day!

Hunter Harris

Lamb Project Name: Smokey Breed:

Rideau Arcott/Suffolk

Senior Age: 16

Steer Project name: Remington Breed: Shorthorn/Maine

Hi, I’m Hunter Harris, I’m 16 years old and this my 4th year in 4H. I chose a Maine Anjou/ Shorthorn steer that I named Remington for my market beef project. I chose him for his depth of body, muscle definition, powerful hindquarters, and for how much he stood out from the rest of the steers his age. Him and I have had a great time figuring each other out over the course of the year and he has turned out exceptionally. He has been eating 30lbs a day of barley and supplements, free-choice hay and mineral since November. He’ll look good in the show ring and in your freezer.

This is my first year trying out the market lamb program that our club has to offer, and I’m very excited to see the results. I chose the name Smokey, and I chose him for his body size, disposition, and his growth rates compared to the other lambs of similar age from the flock he came from. Learning the sheep side of 4H has been very interesting, and I’m excited to see how he performs come show day. I have been feeding him freechoice hay and lamb starter/grower.

We’re excited to see you on show day, and hope that you stop by our stall for a ‘meat’ and greet. If you have any questions please call my dad, Justin at 780-898-2955 to reach me.

Thanks to all our cleavers for their hard work!

Carcass Program

Did you know?

Last year there was 105 steers in the Carcass Competition. 59% Graded AA, 26% AAA and 1% Prime.

The proof is there. Purchasing 4-H Beef not only supports future beef leaders but also put quality beef in your freezer!

Keep an eye out for Lamb Carcass Competiors in the future!

This year we have one member, Gage Hansen, competing in the 4-H Alberta Steer Carcass Competition with his steer Luigi. This is a provincial wide competition where their steers are judged live and on the rail, Members select their steers, same as their live market beef project, and bring them to weigh in. DNA samples are pulled and submitted to the Provincial Committee and anaylsed for genomic indicators. The members then take their steers home to feed and work with them the same as their show steer. For final evaluation, the steers are judged for docility and cleanliness. They are harvested on the same date at specific abbatiors where a grader evaluates the carcass for weight, colour, yield, and grade. All competitors get together after the carcasses are graded for a learning day at Olds College.
