Message from our President and Vice President

Hello Everyone!

Thorsby Multi-Club started the year with Beef, Horse, Small engines and Cleaver projects. Our 2020-2021 year started off in a Pandemic. We could meet as a group, masked and social distanced. With COVID 19 numbers increasing our meetings moved to zoom meetings at home. As a club we have missed a lot of our group activities. We will all look forward to these in the future! It is coming to the end of our 4-H year and we are all working hard to complete our projects. Thanks to all the people who support 4-H!

Kohl Palmer- Club President Colby Borys- Vice-President

Value of 4H Beef The 4-H program guides our members to select quality livestock and maintain consistent nutrition, health and daily care. There is a need to start with a good animal and maximize its potential so then you are left with quality Canadian beef for the consumer. The 4-H Beef project and its many supporters have helped send thousands of our youth away to universities, colleges and trade schools. They have returned to become our business leaders, teachers, caregivers, farmers, mechanics, welders and the list goes on. One thing for sure, when you purchase a 4-H steer, you are not just investing in a child’s future, but also in the future of this community. AVERAGE PRICE IN LBS Round Roast Sirloin Tip Roast Sirloin Steak Round Steak T-Bone Steak Ribeye Steak Stew Meat Ground Beef

$8.50/lb $8.40/lb $12.20/lb $8.30/lb $15.60/lb $15.00/lb $7.50/lb $5.40/lb

A market steer on average weighs 1400 lbs. Ideally an average yield of 62% of more is desired. This results in approximately 600 lbs of take home beef. If you were to buy this beef from a grocery store at these prices, it would cost $5,542.00. 385 lbs of roasts & steaks 215 lbs of ground beef & stew

Average Price $11.10/lb = Average Price $5.90/lb = TOTAL

$4,273.50 $1,268.50 $5,542.00

Average Price of a 4-H Steers: $3.00/lb x 1400 lbs = Average Cut & Wrap = TOTAL

$4,200.00 $750.00 $4,950.00

$5,542.00 -$4,950.00 $592.00

You can save $592.00 by purchasing a 4-H steer instead of buying it at a grocery store and know that it is home grown and you are supporting local youth. PLEASE NOTE: These prices, weights and averages may vary due to market fluctuations, weather conditions and even the breed of an animal can largely influence the frame size and cutability.

THORSBY 4-H

MULTI CLUB

Market Steers

Charity Calf The Thorsby 4-H Multi Club Beef Project is honoured to have on offer our Charity Calf “Taylor” from a long standing legacy 4-H family; John and Shirley Taylor and family. John and Shirley moved to the Thorsby area in 1974 and quickly became members of their new community. In 1975, their son Chris joined the Strawberry 4-H Beef Club and finished in Thorsby. Their daughter Cathy joined Thorsby 4-H Multi Club in 1980 and finished in Strawberry, completing 10 years in 4-H. All the while, John was an active beef leader in both clubs for a total of 11 years. While Shirley never held a leadership role, she was a valuable volunteer within the clubs. The original Thorsby Club banner was handmade by Shirley and she was highly involved in the creation of the original Thorsby Club vests. Both Shirley and Cathy were public speaking judges at both the Club and District levels. In 1980, John and Shirley ventured into the purebred business starting J&S Herefords, raising polled Herefords. This brought them into the cattle show world with a highlight being the 1998 Canadian Hereford Show held in Edmonton, showcasing approximately 700 head on display. The Taylors promoted their cattle, the Hereford breed, and 4-H with nothing but absolute pride in our livestock business. This Charity Calf marks the last calf for sale from John and Shirley as they dispersed the rest of their herd earlier this year. In 2015, Shirley was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer. Shirley and her family have taken this in stride the best they can. As fellow 4-H members, leaders and friends, our hearts go out to you. This year’s Charity Calf has been graciously supplied at no cost to the club by the Taylors. We greatly thank them for their generosity. In return, as a club we have decided to donate the majority of the proceeds from this calf to the Alzheimer Society in honour of the Taylor family. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank the Taylor family all they have contributed to our 4-H, community and livestock industry throughout the years.

Proceeds from the sale of Taylor will be donated to:
