Hey there DPM readers, The Holy Spirit whispered to me in September that 2022 is The Year of The Devil's Defeat. Yes! It is the year where you get to say a loud 'NO' to the enemy's advances of doubt, fear, anxiety, insecurity, self doubt and low self-esteem; over your life.

That's why this Winter/January issue has been themed "TAKE THE JUMP". It is the time for you to let go of everything that has been holding you back and "TAKE THE JUMP".

What is The Jump?

"The Jump" is your deliberate decision to take a great leap of faith to become who God has called you to be, and do what He has called you to do. It is your intentional decision to live a purposedriven life, led by The Holy Spirit.

I want you to begin to look at the areas of your life where you have limited yourself in 2021 and before. Look at the areas you know you should have gone much further but because you are fearful and worried about what others will say or have said; you failed to move.

Today is the end of that phase of your life; whether personally, professionally or ministrywise. TAKE THE JUMP and become great for God. This issue will help you take the jump. We have put together a set of articles, interviews and features that will help you on this new journey in 2022.

THE FIRST STEP

Have you ever felt stuck? Have you ever felt like you’re in a particular place in your life, career or business for far too long? Do you have great ideas for business, purpose and impacting the lives of others, but somehow you just don’t know what the next step is?

THE FIRST STEP

These are questions that we seldom have answers to, due to a multiplicity of reasons.

However, what I have learned is that the answer lies in taking the first step and doing something related to what you desire to achieve. There’s something about that step of faith—that step into the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen —that gives fuel to the fire of belief that burns inside of you and I. A perfect example of this would be when Peter longed to do as Jesus did, and walk on water.

After Jesus called him, Peter showed desire and then took a step to fulfill his desire. In taking a first step like Peter, you ought to have a goal or vision that you intend to reach. I imagine that to even take the first step, Peter had to put out every logical reasoning that told him that it is humanly impossible to walk on water, out of his mind. In our lives as well, to take the first step, we sometimes need to battle the thoughts that tell us that we’re not good enough. We need to discount the thoughts that tell us nobody in our family has ever taken that step, or that it is too big for us to do.

We often get so hung up on what others have to say about us, that we forget the greatness that’s inside of us waiting to be unleashed. The Bible gives us the best instruction on taking the first step, when it says, “The steps of a righteous man are ordered by the Lord...”

(Psalm 37:23 - KJV). This means that we should make a move, if we want to be guided.

I'd like you to think about that dream that has been lying dormant in you for years; that dream that has kept you up for many nights and left you daydreaming on many occasions.

Think about that dream that just won’t leave you alone no matter how hard you try, and ask yourself whether it is worth fighting for. Is it worth it to forsake everything that’s holding you back and create something that will live on for generations and be a legacy to others?

Think about these questions and arrive at your own answers.

Then, when you decide to pick up that dream and run with it, you must fuel it with belief. You can do this by designing an environment as well as a support framework that will keep that fire of belief burning. Get the right books, motivational audios and videos and talk to people who have been able to achieve what you desire to achieve. Also, get a coach or mentor who you can be accountable to, as well as be guided by. And, do it before it’s too late.

The late Dr Myles Munroe said that the richest place on earth is the graveyard, and that’s because so many people were afraid to take the first step and died with all the potential inside of them. Do not allow fear and doubt cripple you from taking actionable steps that will lead you to fulfill your purpose and mission in life.

For me, getting started and writing this article was a first step, and one that I had been delaying for a very long time. I had thought that I couldn’t do it or wasn’t qualified enough to do it, but here I am launching out into the unknown. Join me as you take the first step on your journey to achieving your goals and dreams, and let's elevate to greatness together.

Once, I was going through a time of indecision, and God had given me the green light to publish my first book. I had always been a writer, but to publish my work was something new.

TAKING THE JUMP IN YOUR 'SEE NOTHING' DAYS

I was unsure and doubtful because it was something I had never done. I was uncertain of the process and if I could accomplish it. One day, a shift took place, and I got the courage to take the jump. The decision to jump has opened many doors for me since then. Prayer, the Word of God, and putting trust in Him empowered me to pivot and take a step into my purpose.

There are seasons in our lives when life seems to be uncertain. If you look around today, a lot of people are in that season. The world we live in today looks different than it was just two years ago. You may be wondering when you will see the manifestations of some of the things that have been prophesied to you. You may be thinking, "when will this promise come to fulfillment?" Most of all, many of us do not see the things we have been hoping for. This is what I call the 'See Nothing Days'. When we are in this season of life, we must trust God. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and He will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).

So, you may ask, “How can I move forward in all the things God has instructed me to do, with so much uncertainty?” You may think you have fasted, prayed and studied God’s word and still have not experienced a breakthrough. I assure you that you are not alone; I was once there. I remember asking God, “Father, what should I do?

Should I move or should I be still?" The amusing thing was that God had already shown me what to do, but because of the uncertainty I was experiencing, I became doubtful of it.

Have you ever been there? Are you there right now?

I encourage you to 'take the jump'. Take the jump into what God has in store for you. Take the jump into what God has equipped you to do. Take the jump over fear.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand"(Isaiah 41:10).

I believe we are in the season of 'The Jump'. 'The Jump' is a season where God opens miraculous doors for us to do what He has ordained us to do. It is a season where God is going to supernaturally accelerate the purposes of those who are sold out to His plan and purpose. I remember many times in my life, when I did not know what the next day would bring. My only hope was the Word of God. I saw nothing, but God. Let me be clear, there were times when I was too afraid to even step out on what God said. On the other hand, there was great recompense for the times I had the faith to step out in spite of my doubt, fear, or circumstances. God knows what is best for you, and you can enjoy it if you believe in Him. “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him" (1 Corinthians 2:9).

Is God telling you to jump, even in uncertain circumstances? I encourage you to have faith and believe Him enough to do so. Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith produces tangible things. God is bigger than any setback, trial, or challenges you may go through. Walk in boldness, trust Him and take the jump into your destiny.

I remember walking alone on a sandy shore, communing with God while most of the world slept. Then, out of nowhere, I found myself staring at a shell. God’s message was so profound through it, that I paused, took a photo of it and wrote my first devotion. I felt His presence in an unfamiliar way, as He spoke to me through nature. His promptings were almost audible as He revealed Himself. But, could God be calling me to write?

I shared my stories with a friend, who confirmed God’s call. Unfortunately, delightful memories of that day were followed by despair as her sudden death stopped me from moving forward. I wrestled with questions, doubts, and fears, because I felt helplessly alone. In the Acts of the Apostles, some Jews tried to drive out demons without the authority of Jesus: “One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” (Acts 19:15 - NIV) Later I read a memorable quote “I can’t help you if you don’t know who you are, stupid girl.” In an instant, I knew my call to write required unconditional belief in the authority Christ gives believers.

Amid grief, my pastor challenged me to write a Lenten devotion. Afraid, I sat in front of my computer and the words came, followed by the idea for my first book. I pursued God during isolation which produced clarity despite the pandemic. Jesus and I walked through unexpected trials together; however, I listened, learned His voice, and leaned on Him. The bold task demanded my identity and confidence in Christ, and He was my strength.

Yet, I continued to write what was on my heart with no idea who would read the book.

Then finally, God spoke to me about words being life or death. While I guarded my mouth and fingers, I clung to and valued His Word. After I released everything to Him, my faith increased. As I read Isaiah 43:19 (NIV), “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland,” I sensed God birthing something new and urgent. His written Word took on a fascinating meaning, and it wasn’t about me.

Rather, it was about God’s plan of salvation for the world.

God’s promise in (1 Corinthians 2:9 - NIV) is, However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those that love him." The scripture urged me to seek Him first, in order to discern His will for the next season and to receive the fullness of God. My heart softened towards those who did not know the Lord, and consequently my assurance of a future, combined with burdens for those without hope, spurred me to action. My desire was for people to understand that doubts and fear are okay. Signing a contract with Covenant Books was my next leap of faith.

God became my priority, and these scriptures yielded peace in a chaotic time: “Go now, write it on a tablet for them, inscribe it on a scroll, that for the days to come it may be an everlasting witness.”

(Isaiah 30:8 - NIV) ‘He said, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." (Psalm 46:10 - NIV). So, I wrote about a lifetime of God’s faithfulness in extreme situations.

All through my entire life, God has stood with me through troubles, as I overcame fear, focused on Him, and worldly things lost their grip. Even though my journey began with writing about finding God in nature; in subsequent seasons, He led me to focus on finding Him in storms. So, each day I wrote about previous storms in my life, I moved forward in obedience to His plan for me.

Our assurance is Christ alone, and our hope is in Him; not in our circumstances. So, jump onboard, He will reveal what is to come and guide you safely on your journey. Regardless of your destination, focus on Christ; the storms don’t last forever.

ACTIVATE YOUR FAITH: STEP INTO YOUR PURPOSE DR. ANITA K. SMITH

Activating your faith as a Christian requires you to believe in God, trust and rely on Him, and stand firmly on His promises. When the Holy Spirit gives you an assignment or instructs you to 'step into your purpose,' you must be obedient and willing to answer the call that God has ordained for your life.

Are you living your dreams, pursuing your goals, implementing business strategies, and using your God-given talents to 'step into your life’s purpose'?

Moreover, have you spent time alone with God and asked Him to order your steps and guide your path towards your new assignment? It is important to use the Word of God to guide and direct your walk (Psalm 119:105) and not allow iniquity have dominion over you (Psalm 119:133).

Or, are you afraid to leave your comfort zone; your safety net and familiar place and step into unknown, uncertain and unfamiliar territory? Do you work 9 to 5 every day and feel stuck, out of place, or overwhelmed? Do you feel under-utilized or unfulfilled? Do you wake up every morning with an unpleasant attitude or knots in your stomach because you dread going to your place of work? Do you have exceptional skills that are not getting recognition or appreciation by your boss or coworkers?

Friend, if these questions resonate with you, and speak to your spirit, then I want to know what is holding you back from leaving the unpleasant position, location or situation. I would like to know what is preventing you from taking the leap of faith, accepting the higher calling and obeying God, in order to step into your purpose? Is it fear, worry, doubt, anxiety, finance, instability, self-limiting beliefs, or lack of faith? What barriers are preventing you from executing your plan? You need to understand that God has not given you the spirit of fear; but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). So, eliminate fear and activate your faith.

When God places in your heart a burning desire to change your life, solve a major problem that keeps you awake at night, help someone recover from their pain, or when He gives you something new to birth into existence—a new idea, a new book, a new business, a new project or whatever applies to your unique situation—you must not toy with it, because the vision is now.

You should activate your faith and jump in with both feet. Friend, “write your vision and make it plain” (Habakkuk 2:2); do not procrastinate or listen to the doubting voices inside you. “For the vision is yet for an appointed time, at the end, it shall speak; wait for it, because it will surely come” (Habakkuk 2:3).

Last year, God spoke to me about 'changing my position' and 'trusting and depending' on Him completely. He woke me from a peaceful sleep and calmly ministered to my soul, saying, “change your position". I thought it was a dream, but He said it twice; in a quiet voice. I immediately jumped out of bed, wrote down 'specific' notes from God, and started to meditate on my spiritual encounter with Jesus Christ.

Several days later, I went to work and started to apply for different job positions in various geographical locations. I was serious about my job search, but about two to three months later, I started to receive rejection letters from companies. God visited me again, and said, “that’s not what I meant. I want you to “change your position!”

After being still, listening and seeking God’s will and direction for my life, I finally got it right. He wanted me to leave my 9 to 5 job, step out in faith, follow His plans and walk into my divine purpose. I am called to serve people who are broken and bruised after divorce and help them heal, recover, and become champions in life.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11). Friend, I answered the call from God and stepped into my purpose during the pandemic. My life is beautiful, purposeful, and meaningful now, and I am impacting lives in ways that I could never have envisioned, if I were not obedient to God and “changed my position".

Seek God in prayers, with Scriptures, and through meditation, to discover your life’s purpose. Once The Holy Spirit reveals it to you, accept it, believe it, activate it, walk into it and thrive in it. Your life has meaning and purpose, and you are destined for greatness and success.

A FAITH THAT BREAKS BARRIERS

What kind of faith can overcome poverty, heal the sick, and bring you into your purpose?

Is it great faith or mustard seed faith? Some people may say you need to have a lot of faith to achieve victories like the ones I mentioned above, but I say faith as small as a mustard seed can be the spark you need to ignite an even greater belief and trust in God.

A FAITH THAT BREAKS BARRIERS

This faith has the power to move obstacles out of your way and put you on your pathway to purpose.

My supporting scripture for this is Matthew 13:3132 (KJV) which describes mustard seed faith this way, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; which indeed is smaller than all seeds but when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches”. The Kingdom of heaven is birthed from small beginnings, yet when fully grown, it is the place where God’s righteous ones live and flourish. This speaks of growth to me. The truth is, your faith has great potential and when you use it to start a business or claim healing in your body; you are exercising it. Every time you use your faith, you build consistency, and it becomes a habit. Imagine a habit that has the power to change a situation from bad to good, or one that can take a person from depression to exhilaration, because God provided a breakthrough. Your faith grows through the circumstances you overcome and by standing firm on the promises of God found in His Word―the Bible. The more you know about the promises of God, believe that He will make good on them, and exhibit obedience to what He requires of you, the more you will see these promises manifest. Trust forms at that point, and you will get to a level where nothing will be able to shake you because you know God will bring you through it.

I have been one to embrace changes in life; that others resist. Divorce, the loss of property, a shift in job position due to reorganization, and much more has impacted my life. But, my mindset on faith in God has made these changes easier to accept. I trust that God has my best interest at heart, when I am faced with a hard decision to shift from my current posture.

I believe in living a purpose-driven life, so I trust that the changes God brings me through, are all aligned to keep me on the path that will fulfill His purpose for my existence. This is not to say that I do not have moments of doubt. I do, but I have enough of the Word of God in me, to go back to His promises for my life and lean on them when circumstances show me something different. I do not rely on what I see; I rely on the promises of God. Recently, I felt God urging me to make a move out of state. I did and moved from California to Texas. Then the pandemic hit, and I found myself unable to connect with the new people I met at work and at church. That period, I felt uncertain about the move and as a result, I let fear creep in. But, it was not for long. I inquired from God again, what my purpose for moving to Texas was, and He began to teach me through tough situations and new connections that I made on online platforms; that I am to be a light in dark times. He divinely appointed me to meet new people who needed encouragement at that time, and He made me a light in their dark times. I even purchased a beautiful new home during that period.

That is faith in action. I went from uncertainty and a little worry, to faith in God for my purpose. Hebrews 11:1 (KJV) tells us that “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”.

What I strive for and what I believe for, is what builds my faith, and I do all the things I do, because I am certain that He will make a way. The Word of God says, “Without faith, it is impossible to please God”.

(Hebrews 11:6 - KJV).

God is our father, who wants the best for us; it is only right that we please Him with our faith.

FIND JOY IN THE MIDST OF ADVERSITY

Are you in the middle of a crisis and you feel stuck? Are you struggling with your health, finances, relationships, career or spirituality? Does it seem like you cannot go forward in life? Do you feel as if you're caught between the devil and the deep blue sea? Is your faith at an all-time low?

FIND JOY IN THE MIDST OF ADVERSITY

No matter what your answers to these questions are and regardless of why you are stuck, you can find joy. The woman in Mark chapter 5 who was hemorrhaging for 12 years was stuck; she had spent all she had and was growing worse by the day, but she found joy. You too can find joy.

Imagine that your life is a glass filled with water and follow these four steps: Step 1: Note what is in your glass The woman with the issue of blood took stock of what was happening to her.

“Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse.” (Mark 5:25-26, NKJV) In your current state, the glass is filled with water containing a mixture of good, bad and in-between things. All the things contributing to your feeling stuck are in this glass. They include: Health issues Bad habits Past hurts Poor financial decisions Unforgiveness Anger Mistrust Failures Success that no longer serves you Etc. And, the water is muddy from all these things.

Take an inventory of your life.

1. Write down your current activities, hurts, failures, habits, and joys. Include all the things that make up your life.

2. Beside each item, write: How they make you feel: happy, sad, peaceful or indifferent Their importance to you The ways they have contributed to your being stuck How well they are serving you now Step 2: Empty your glass The woman heard about Jesus Christ and decided to put everything she had been through, behind her.

“For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.” (Mark 5:28, NKJV) Do you want to have a glass filled with crystal clear water? To have it, you must empty the glass. If you keep adding to the muddy water, it will remain muddy.

Release those things that are not serving you.

On a separate sheet of paper, write those things from step 1, that no longer serve you: Bad habits Failures Successes that are not helpful for this season Hurts Unforgiveness Say a proper farewell to them and release them.

Burn the paper or tear it up, and throw it away.

To have authentic joy and peace, you must connect with Jesus and allow Him to heal the issues you are struggling with. Connect with God. There is a hole or longing in our lives that can only be filled by God. What is stewardship? The Oxford dictionary defines stewardship as the job of supervising or taking care of something, such as an organization or property. In the Christian context, stewardship celebrates the gifts God freely gives us, so we can use them for kingdom purposes. Many of us equate money or financial wealth with greed and evil, but that is not how God intended it at all.

Money is a tool to accomplish short and long-term financial goals within your family, and more importantly, money can be used to bless others in need.

The interesting paradox of prosperity is this: as wealth increases, complexity increases. Financial independence (also known as retirement) and freedom from debt are likely two of your long-term goals. Yet the more money you have, the more choices available and subsequently the less real freedom you have, due to a bigger fear of loss.

Economic uncertainty is inevitable unless we anchor ourselves to God. Matthew 7:24-27 reminds us: "Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." (NKJV) Well-meaning neighbors and friends may conform to societal pressures, buy homes or cars they cannot easily afford and mortgage their future by incurring debt. Or they may spend frivolously on lifestyle desires with little to no charitable giving.

People who do this are building on a weak foundation, and an unexpected job loss or health crisis could send their finances into a tailspin.

As Christians, each spending decision is actually a spiritual decision, so we must build upon a sturdy foundation of rock that can withstand the test of time. We should seek a balance between protection and trusting in God’s provision.

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1 NKJV) God owns it all, and when you understand this principle, it makes every financial decision easier.

It’s not YOUR money to spend, save or share. The Almighty Creator empowered you with gifts and talents to earn money, therefore your earnings should be used in a righteous manner.

Some of us become slaves to money, working long hours instead of spending time with family and friends. And in the process, our purpose is misguided towards accumulating financial wealth rather than building human and social capital.

It is clear from the parable of talents that God rewards wise stewards with additional resources.

Specifically, Matthew 25:23 says, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things.

Enter into the joy of your lord.” (NKJV) We should not give for selfish reasons; to get something in return but in a spirit of generosity.

There are five symptoms of responsible stewardship: 1. Charitable giving that is proportional to income 2. Living a controlled life that is free from the shackles of debt 3. Paying taxes with integrity and thanksgiving 4. Setting financial goals 5. Being accountable to someone else You don’t have to be alone on this stewardship journey. Step out in faith and converse with your spouse (if married) to create a joint stewardship vision. Better yet, seek the advice of a Christian financial advisor who can guide you towards wiser financial decisions. Being a great steward is central to your divine purpose.

DPM: How did you develop this passion for people development and entrepreneurship?

Where did it begin?

DR.J: That's a very interesting question. It didn't start like that. The dream that I had when I was at primary and high school was a totally different one from what I'm living today. When I was still studying, I thought I'd be a medical doctor because of some things that teachers were promoting at the time. They said that if you were a clever student, then you should go to the sciences and become a medical doctor and all that. But, my results were not good enough for me to become a medical doctor. So, when I got to varsity, I ended up doing BSC, with the hope that I will move from BSC in my second year and become a medical doctor. It didn't go as planned, so I had to complete my BSC. But, I'm happy that it did. When I look back now and connect the dots. I'm enjoying what I'm doing now. So, I ended up doing my masters in Statistics and in my first year as a working professional, I started as a statistician.

DPM: How important has it been to explore your truest potential?

DR.J: I think it has been very important because what happens is that if you are not operating at your best, or if what you are doing does not bring the best out of you, you don't feel fulfilled. You might get the big salary, but if you are not where you feel fulfilled, then you are not going to be happy. I think for me in my journey, I've always been seeking my passion, looking for something that I can do that I'm passionate about, such that when I wake up in the morning and do it, I'll get excited about it. I find out that I don't have only one passion; I've got a lot of them, but if you look at most of them, they all fall under the umbrella of people, development and entrepreneurship. So that's how it all evolved. You do one thing, you develop a certain skill, then now you are able to do another, and then you keep doing that.

Before you know, you've got all these different things that you are doing.

DPM: How do you help individuals and businesses?

DR.J: I was always looking for something I'm passionate about; something that I could give my best in. What I found is that some people are operating lower than their best, not because they don't want to operate better, but they don't know how. They don't also know how to search for it within themselves. What coaching has brought for me is to help people to become their best. It started from my first business, I ran it for about six years, but it failed. After that, I went into the journey of trying to find out why that business failed. Am I that stupid? I had a lot of questions then. and it was when I did my PhD. After that, I started to think that maybe if I had somebody who was coaching or mentoring me when I ran my first business, I wouldn't have made the mistakes I made; as much as I appreciated them.

Now, I think I needed to have learned from those mistakes and failures. But, some of them I think maybe I would have minimized them if I had a coach.

So, what I'm trying to do, is to be that person that I wish I had to other people so that they don't have to experience exactly the same thing I experienced.

We promote failure in entrepreneurship. We say, "Don't be scared of failure. Go and fail, but fail and move on." You need that person who will coach you, who will make you feel comfortable with the failure, who will tell you it's okay, it's part of the journey, but I didn't have that.

DPM: What is your advice for anybody looking to have a successful business in 2022, or even starting that business and being successful?

DR.J: We are living in a different world; COVID-19 has changed our lives so much. If you compare from 2020 to 2021 people especially in the entrepreneurship space that have managed to stay on, are people that were able to seize the opportunities of the moment.

We live in a digital world; the needs of our customers change. If you want to make it, you have to be flexible. You can't get married to one business module or business idea. You have to always be alert, look around on what the trends are telling you and change with the times. If the times say this business model that has given you so much profit before COVID and made you rich, is not viable anymore, you have to be prepared to divorce that idea and look at to what is needed today, adopt that, marry that one and run with it until it also runs out of style.

You need to be agile. You need to be flexible. You need to be comfortable enough to let go of the familiar things that you feel. If it's not working for you anymore, let it go. You'll see that some businesses were growing during COVID, when others were dying, because they were able to quickly see that something was changing, and they were not going to go back there. They knew that they needed to modify their business module.

That goes also with your personal life. You have to always be willing to change and be alert to what is happening around you, and even what is happening within you so that you are always aligned and comforted with that. You look at your inner self and what is happening and ask, "Does it talk to me? Does it resonate with me? And, when you're flexible, you move with the time. It's hard times, and it's not easy. You need discipline, commitment, and resilience, and if you know your vision, you know where you want to get to.

INTERVIEW

You need to keep looking at that vision and allow it to bring the fire up for you, then you will make it to 2022 and be successful.

DPM: What, or who is your biggest inspiration?

DR.J: I've got about three women that I look at and see that the black girl is possible, and for the black girl, the sky is the limit. One of them is Oprah. I always watch her stuff and when I look at her listed amongst the richest women in the world, I am inspired. We all know the challenges of being a woman.

When I look at her, I say "Girl, it is possible." Then, there are two vice chancellors in South Africa. One is the vice chancellor at UCT, and then another vice chancellor at UNISA, because I also operate in the academic space. When I look at those two women, I wonder because I understand how difficult the academic space is to navigate; it is male-dominated.

I look at them and say, "it is possible." It doesn't matter how difficult it is. Even if you want to get into an industry that is male-dominated, the fact that you can see women that are like you, makes you feel it is possible. You can make it; you can get there.

Those three women for me, I always look at them and say, "Black girl, you will make it."

As I stared at my bare ring finger, the reality set in that I was no longer engaged to be married. My hopes and dreams of becoming a wife felt shattered forever. That nowordinary day was supposed to have been one of the happiest days of my life, and now it had become a day of great lamenting. I wanted to have walked down that aisle.

I had fought off every inclination within me that told me not to call it off, but I couldn’t lie to myself anymore. It wasn’t right. I didn’t know at the time what it meant to truly follow Jesus, but I knew He was calling me not to get married. I sought after Him in my distress; in the weeks leading up to the wedding, and He became a refuge as my relationship further deteriorated.

I had entered the engagement with the intention of having a healthy, long lasting marriage, but it became clear that Jesus had not ordained the union for that outcome. Alone, I was grieving, disappointed, lost and hopeless; not knowing what the future held for me but knowing that a godly marriage was necessary. I felt lost though, not knowing what that looked like.

In my confusion, Jesus met me and brought me on a healing journey, showing me how it was crucial to put Him first in my own life in order to do that in my marriage relationship. This is illustrated in Colossians 1:17 (NIV): “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

He became my everything in my heartbreak, and I learned to depend on Him. He brought his tender, loving presence to rest upon me and comforted my heart when the suffering felt really strong. It allowed me to see that I wasn’t alone, but was loved in my pain. His compassion moved my heart to let Him in, so that He could show me the other side. His love captivated my heart and helped me to take the next steps. I had acknowledged my deep hurt and pain to Him, but I needed to grieve the loss of the future I had imagined, in order to accept His full will.

The uncertainty of what was to come felt really oppressive, but I needed to process it with Jesus. I needed to work through the feelings of despair and disappointment that I felt, let go of them and surrender all to Him, if I was ever to move on from the painful experience.

That month-long journey towards restoration and opening my heart again, helped me to discover a relationship with Jesus that allowed me see how a marriage relationship should be; with him at the center. I could only achieve that in marriage if I first lived it out in my own life.

God’s intention for a marriage relationship, in essence, is for it to glorify Him and be an act of worship to Him. This can be displayed to Him when we put Him first and seek His will and guidance in all things, with our spouse. God created marriage, and if we are to enter into it, it must be of His design and with His parameters in place. Jesus must be the one we seek, to hold it all together. When you get married, you must commit to Him first, and make Him the head of your union, before you commit to one another.

With His word and the right perspective, I was able to walk out of that painful experience knowing that His will is best. And, whatever my life would look like next would be abundant, because following His perfect will is a life well lived. In future, I intend to have an intimate and transparent relationship, but in it, I must put Jesus in His rightful place as the first.

I met Lynsey at the local farmers' market. I had gone there to buy green beans, berries, and nut butter and Lynsey had a booth selling handmade jewelry. Not wanting to spend too much, I purchased her least expensive item: a set of three silver stacking rings that reminded me of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Smiling, she explained how she melted the silver and poured it into molds.

These were no cheap trinkets purchased on the internet for resale; they came from her own toil and creativity. The next time Lynsey was at the market, I bought a sparkling one-of-a-kind druzy quartz ring. She felt like an old friend right from the start, even though I had only just met her at the market. I also didn’t know whether she believed in my Jesus; I only knew I liked her and looked forward to the days when she graced the market with her wares.

I met Chara in a writers' group and took an instant liking to her. After we’d known each other for about a year, she invited me to serve as a monthly contributor to her blog called Anchored Voices. Six of us contributed to the blog the first year I was on the roster, and one day Chara emailed us all suggesting that we attend a women’s event at a small local church.

One of our blog contributors was a speaker, and Chara thought it would be fun to show up to support her. The day of the event arrived and one crisis after another plagued my work day.

By closing time, I just wanted to go home, eat dinner, and watch TV with my husband. When I got home, I told him I had changed my mind and decided not to go to the event. “But you've been looking forward to this all week, and your friends are expecting you,” he said. I knew he was right. All week, I had felt God urging me to attend, and I didn’t know why. I just knew I had to be there. I ate a quick dinner of leftovers and changed my clothes. I put the address of the church in my phone’s map app and drove away from an easy, comfortable Friday night.

I didn't need the GPS directions for the familiar part of the drive, but soon I found myself in unfamiliar territory. The roads were windy and tall fir trees lined both sides. It seemed I was lost.

“Lord, this can’t be right,” I said out loud. “How could there be a church out here in the middle of nowhere? Help me, Lord!” Just then I rounded a bend and there it was. “Your destination is on the left,” my GPS reported. I pulled into the gravel parking lot of a cute country church and found a parking spot. I got out of my car, Bible and notebook in hand and looked around. In spite of the idyllic and peaceful setting, an unexpected wave of fear rushed over me. I didn’t know anyone here except Chara, and I didn’t know if she had arrived yet. Would they even let me in? My fingers lingered on my car’s door handle, and I longed to open it, get back in and drive away.

Then, I remembered that fear is a liar. “God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” (1 Timothy 1:7 NLT). I had been invited, and I belonged there. God wouldn’t urge me to be there for no reason. I took a deep breath, exhaled fear, and walked gingerly across the gravel in my high-heeled boots. I opened the front door and to my surprise there stood Lynsey. “What are you doing here?” I asked.

“I’m one of the organizers of this event and will be speaking tonight. What are you doing here?

“Chara invited me to come support Brittney, and I’m so glad I did.”

I experienced a transformative evening full of hope and encouragement. I almost missed out on every bit of it, including a deeper connection with a friend I had only known because of her beautiful jewelry. That night, Lynsey shared the heart of her Spirit-led soul and blessed me beyond my greatest expectation. I don’t know what Jesus has planned for my relationship with Lynsey, but whatever it is will be astonishing and sweet; just like Him.

Parenting does not come with a book of instructions but the most important thing to know is that we have a parenting instructor whose name is Jesus Christ. His word (The Bible) is filled with instructions. Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) tells us to “train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

One of the biggest issues I have encountered during my years of working with youth is the breakdown of the communication barrier between the parent and child. Very often the children have said that their parents are not listening to them. Unfortunately this has caused many to rebel because they believe that their parents are not trying to understand their point of view. We all know the commandment that children must obey your parents in the Lord; however, it does not say that parents should not listen to their children. This causes communication breakdown.

As a parent of six children, and as a single parent, I can certainly understand some of the parents that I have worked with because it can be extremely difficult when juggling a job, education, errands, appointments and so much more. All these activities being done on your own certainly takes a toll on you and can lead you to a place where you end up neglecting the most important thing…the children.

Being a mother of one child is hard enough, and with multiple children, things can really get tough. There were times when I thought I would go insane but God was my door to sanity and prayer was my key to peace. God is the one that helps us as parent well and gives us the grace to be attentive to everything that we need to pay attention to and in every way.

I have come to know and understand the results of holding on to God as a single parent and as such, I have always found it a great solution to talk my clients about God. Being a mom of a child who attempted suicide at the age of twelve and also attempted to do the same a couple times as she became older, being diagnosed as a schizophrenic and having bipolar disorder, has required me to hold on dearly to God. God was the only One I could call on and as I give this testimony to the parents and youth I’ve worked with over the years, it really made a difference in their relationship with me and each other because now they were seeing that someone else knew how they felt and what they were going through.

My counsel to you as a parent is to always make it a practice to call on God and allow the first line of defense to always be prayer. We never know what other parents are going through or have gone through, so it’s also important to share our experiences and testimonies of the goodness of God. I didn’t have a village to help me in my time of need, so I learned to depend solely on God and still do.

Looking for my first real job was discouraging. I had a temporary job working in my state legislature and had been passed over for the permanent position. I cried when I didn’t get it, because I felt I was more qualified than the lady who got the job. What was I going to do? Since my father was retired in the military, I talked with a recruiter about join The day before I was supposed to sign papers to enter military service, my mom called to tell me she’d received a thick manila envelope in the mail for me.ing the reserves. At least I would have some income and serve my country.

I told her to open it. It was a job offer for an internship that I’d applied to six months prior, but heard nothing about. I danced in glee and told her to forward the paperwork for me to accept. Next, I called the recruiter and told him I wouldn’t be joining after all, because I had another offer that I wanted to pursue.

The position was a paid internship but limited to 90 days. I was swapping one short-term job with another. The envelope had few details about the work, other than to show up at a given address on a certain day. I flew over 800 miles and found a place with an eight-month sublease. In faith, I took the apartment, believing that God had closed the doors where I had been because He was opening new opportunities elsewhere.

I remembered Isaiah 30:21, “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.” (NKJV).

The Lord had whispered directions in my ear to guide me on His path. I had peace that if God wanted me there, He would provide for my needs.

From the first week, I sought a full-time job, but nothing materialized. Right before I completed my internship, my office re-organized, and my manager wondered if they could bring me back under the new construct. I worked at a temporary agency for seven weeks while they processed paperwork, so I could return permanently.

It wasn’t the job I’d expected, but I wound up liking event planning. The Lord provided exceedingly abundantly above all that I could have asked or thought (Ephesians 3:20-21).

Looking back on my decision to move, I’m surprised at my spontaneity because usually I am a control freak. Sometime ago, I had a career planning conversation with a colleague about my plans for next year, and the two years after that.

However, I didn’t know my plans for three years from now and that stressed me out. Reading this now, I see how ridiculous my concerns are.

God hasn’t brought me this far to drop me on my head; He has a plan for my life, I just have to keep following Him. Proverbs 16:9 says, “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps" (NKJV). At the beginning of 2020, my life was headed one way. Those plans have since been dismantled, and I am regrouping. When I surrender my future to God instead of demanding my own preferences, He takes me places I could never imagine where He receives great glory from my life. I need to rest in the Lord’s provision and choose to walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Do you share my struggle and desire to control the direction of your life? I pray you listen for the Lord’s guidance so that when He says “Go" you will jump to attention and march in step behind Him. Though we may not know where the road leads, we know when we follow the path He has paved for us, our joy will be complete as His glory is revealed.

We sat with Jacqueline Shaulis and had a chance to learn about this Excitable Introvert.

DPM: Tell us who Jacqueline Shaulis is and share the story of where you came from, and how you got to where you are today.

JS: Well, my story starts off with me being just this weird kid in Texas. I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. I'm the eldest of three. I'm that kid who has these huge dreams and all of these aspirations and they're like, out of nowhere. So, I knew from a very early age, I would be writing. I knew I would be speaking, and traveling the world. But, there was nothing about my existence that pointed to that. I’m a kindergarten who is saying, I'm going to be a New York Times bestseller when I grew up; that's really unusual. But, that was me. I had lots of successes early on in life; with writing books, and speaking engagements and awards, but I also had lots of chaos in my life, because our environment was very volatile.

There was abuse that was happening, and I had to do a lot to protect my siblings, because I wanted to try to keep as much of what was happening away from them.

I haven't made New York Times bestseller yet.

But I have had six global bestsellers on Amazon.

I've been able to speak to these huge audiences, literally five continents I've covered. I'm still aiming for South America, I got to get there, and Antarctica, that's the other one I haven't been to.

DPM: You are The Excitable Introvert. Tell them about what or who really is an introvert?

JS: People think of introverts as someone who's really shy, really quiet, and doesn't want to be around people. Those can be traits of an introvert but that's not what makes someone introverted.

What makes them introverted is the way that they process stimulation. So, for us introverts, when we're engaging with people, we're listening to what you're saying, we're looking at your body language, we are feeling your whole energy, your vibe, we're looking at how other people are responding, we're thinking about how we want to respond, we're wondering, we are doing all of these simultaneously.

It's simply a matter of us not only taking in so much stimulation, but having to internally process that stimulation. So, we need to get away from it in order to process and sort through all of this that we took in. You can still be on stages, you can still be vibrant, funny and love to be of service, you can still do all of those things and also be introverted. You don't have to pretend to be an extrovert because that's doing something that you were not crafted to do.

That's not how you were made. There's beauty in the way that you were made.

DPM: So, you are working with professional and entrepreneurial black women. Tell us a little bit about what you do and how you're servicing that audience as colored women.

JS: I had never focused on this market until about two years ago. I am a black woman, I am an introvert, I am an introverted black woman.

But it never occurred to me and I never had a particular draw for this. Most of my clients in the past 11 or so that I've been in business has been white males in corporate America. That's been great. There's been a sprinkling of women, a sprinkling of everyone else, if you will. So, it was around 2019 I was getting really frustrated with things that I was seeing, not just within the corporate spaces and introverts, but just how the experiences of women of color: black, brown, and indigenous, were being dismissed in spaces of personal development and self-help.

It was as if our lived experiences didn't matter.

That was really aggravating for me. It's really frustrating, and I kind of fell into this rabbit hole of thinking, so I know that there are powerful women in this space. I know that they are doing various things.

Aside from that,there is the faulty notion of introversion and the assigning of a story to it. If you are quiet, or if you need to take a bit longer, then somehow you are deficient, and you can't contribute. So therefore, you don't deserve to be in the room, you don't deserve to know that there is a room, and you don't deserve to know where the building is; in case you do happen to find the room. This entire story gets put onto us, in addition to all of the other things that we have to contend with, and that's affecting families and affecting communities. I mean, it's such a bigger thing than introversion, but introversion is one of the places to start.

INTERVIEW

And so that's a very long answer to how it is, but it's a much bigger issue than simply how do I speak up for myself? That may be a starting point. But, even if you're speaking up for yourself, if you still have people who are making decisions, who are saying, "okay, you're speaking up for yourself in a way that I don't like, it will hinder you from opportunities. It means more of your time has to be spent either overcoming those barriers or working around them, instead of simply delivering, DPM: You have a brand where you talk about helping the woman discover her “A.W.E.S.O.M.E”. Take us through that journey JS: “A.W.E.S.O.M.E” is an acronym and A.W.E.S.O.M.E is a thing. It's not what you do, it's who you are. So, A.W.E.S.O.M.E stands for your amazing works of expression, serving others with maximum enjoyment. It's a triad of experiences.

For any woman, especially for women of color to advance, they need that triad, you can't have two, you can't have one, you need all three. So, you need first to recognize the power of your amazing works of expression. This is for all of the ways you show up in the world. You're a professional, you're a mother, you're a Christian, you're acoffee lover; all of these are different aspects of your life. These are different ways that you can shine your light and share your gifts. All of them are honorable, all of them are needed for many women especially the ones that I work with. They feel that they have to put aside their motherhood in order to be successful in their career. No! The lessons that you learn as a mother help to feed and support the ways that you show up as a professional.

KNEEL IN HUMILITY; STAND IN HONOR

I always thought that being humble meant not being prideful, not boasting, esteeming others higher than yourself, being respectful of others, being courteous like allowing someone to cut in front of you in the grocery line and you not say anything or allowing someone to jump in front of you in traffic and you not give them a piece of your mind

It can be all these things; however, humility doesn’t start with us. Humbling ourselves is a response to God’s work in our lives. It is not selfinitiated. It is a God-given response in us to God for his divine purpose. The Latin word “humiliare” means “to humble” and the word humiliation derives from the same Latin word. I didn’t know that the humiliation of losing my hair would initiate a God-given response in me to humble myself for His purpose and His glory.

I have Alopecia, which is an auto-immune disorder that attacks your hair follicles preventing hair growth. Forced to wear wigs, I was devastated and depressed. I felt abandoned and alone. Only family and close friends knew my struggle. A prisoner to the lies of the enemy—you’re ugly, you look disgusting, your husband doesn’t want you— his lies tormented me. Humiliated and ashamed, I would no longer allow my husband to see me without my wig, but I never stopped praying. My prayer is for God to get the glory in my life. Two years ago as I knelt before God, He said, “How can they give me glory if they never know your struggle?

When I heard God’s voice, I knew what I had to do.

The year prior to this, He was urging me to take the wig off and just trust His plan, but because of fear, I rejected that idea. There are two ways to respond to God’s humbling. We can either resist and continue suffering or humble ourselves and receive grace. James 4:6 says “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble”.

Humility is given by God so that we respond correctly to His will. My response this time was “yes”.

Without hesitation, I shaved my head bald. I didn’t stop to think of what others would say. I took a leap of faith.

The Bible states in Proverbs 18:12, before honor there’s humility or “humiliation”. Think of the despair Esther must have gone through when she went before the king without being summons.

Because she kneeled before God, she stood before the king. Imagine the humiliation Daniel experienced from a position of authority to being cast in the lion’s den. He kneeled before God, so he could sleep with the lions.

What about Mary, the mother of Jesus? The shame she must have endured. She was pregnant out of wedlock. Imagine the stares, the finger pointing, the name-calling, the isolation, but her God-given response was to humble herself. James 4:10 reads, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up”. Mary humbled herself, suffered the humiliation, now all generations call her blessed (Luke 1:48). Had Esther not responded by humbling herself to God, a whole nation of people would have been put to death. Had Daniel not responded by humbling himself, he would have been put to death.

Had Mary not responded by humbling herself, we all would suffer eternal death.

Humility is not allowing someone to cut the line and you hold your peace. You may have to suffer.

Consider Jesus, the Perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2). He knelt before God, so He could stand before His accusers, withstand His abusers, and die on the cross.

I encourage you to go through your humbling or humiliating experience. It won’t be easy but keep kneeling before God. Will you shed tears, absolutely? Will your husband walk out on you, possibly? Will you lose your job, perhaps? But God will exalt you, give you grace, and cause you to stand in honor.

Bridging the gap between you and your God-given purpose.
