On the Cover Celebration Mass begins Rosary’s 50th Anniversary Year The opening celebration of Rosary’s 50th anniversary was a day of jubilation for the more than 600 guests who joined with us to praise, bless and glorify God for the many blessings bestowed on Rosary.

Abbot Vincent, the main celebrant for Mass, was joined by seven other Marmion monks, three diocesan priests and our Deacon, Paul Iwanski. In his homily, Abbot Vincent reminisced about the price of things in 1962 and concluded that the best value that year was a new, Dominican, all girls high school located on Edgelawn Drive.

Sr. Mary Joseph, our founding principal, was present in spirit. Her reflections, delivered by Rosary pioneer Sr. Dominica, took us back to very beginnings: Bishop Lane’s invitation to open a high school for girls—starting with 43 freshmen at the old Holy Angels School on Locust and Galena—surviving the inconveniences of construction with no electricity, chalkboards or extra desks—being supported by the partnership of parents, teachers, staff and students whose legacy of trust continues to this day. Sr. Mary Joseph reminded all of us that the goals then and now are the same, providing an excellent Catholic, Dominican education for young women.

The music provided by our choruses and orchestra under the direction of Ann Mary Wagner sounded like a heavenly choir. Perhaps the most poignant moment in the liturgy was the singing of the Dominican Blessing by the sisters who attended the celebration. So many parents told me that moment was a time for tears of gratitude. (Visit our YouTube channel to see the Dominican Blessing from this day.)

Our young women played a big part in the day as greeters, Eucharistic ministers and lectors. Under the direction of Sandy Iwanski, the girls conducted themselves with reverence and dignity. Sandy and Paul Iwanski also worked with the Dominican Preachers to make one decade rosaries for all of our guests who received them as a gift at the end of the liturgy. The rosaries were encased in lovely blue silk pouches made by Debbie Olson and our alumnae.

We ended the day with wonderful refreshments arranged and served by Anne Danos. Our guests enjoyed touring the building, looking at pictures, swapping “ remember when” stories and cherishing a memory of an extraordinary day of blessings.

Rosary launches new website

Rosary High School launched its new web site this Fall that features a greater ability to highlight upcoming events, add current news, and register for events online.

Quick links in the middle of the home page include the school and lunch calendars, information for parents, and links to Rosary’s Facebook and LinkedIn pages. This Week at Rosary highlights daily events.

An online community allows alumnae to search for classmates in the online directory; share news, class notes, prayer requests and memories on message boards; build a personal profile; and link to other social media sites.

School Life Rosary Welcomes New Faculty and Staff Mr. Shreyas Bhat (Honors Physics, Physics, Physical Science) Mr. Bhat is an instructor in Honors Physics, Physics, and Physical Science.

He earned his M.A. Degree from Cornell University in Engineering Mechanics, and his B.A. in Physics from The University of Chicago. Mr. Bhat taught college physics for a year as an adjunct faculty member at St. Xavier University. Prior to teaching, he was a graduate student doing research on the design and fabrication of wind-energy harvesting micro scale devices. He also taught math and engineering as a TA undergraduate. Mr. Bhat will help coach the WYSE Physics team here at Rosary.

Mr. James Bond-Harris (Assistant Director of Technology) Mr. Bond-Harris is the Assistant Director of Technology, and has been at Rosary High School since November of 2011. Prior to Rosary, he worked as a Systems Engineer at AT&T/Lucent Technologies, as a Business Analyst at Sears, and an instructor at ITT in Orland Park. In addition to his part-time work at RHS, he is active as a musician, performing with the New Philharmonic Orchestra (Timpani) at the College of DuPage, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Naperville, and has recently begun learning the hammer dulcimer. He holds Masters Degrees in both Music Education and Computer Science from the University of Illinois. He lives with his wife and son in Naperville, and his daughter is in her first year of college (Belmont University).

Rachel. Fun facts: he has published children’s music with Veggietales, and appeared once on The Dave Letterman Show on a studio audience talent segment.

Linda Fritz (Coordinator of Development Events) Mrs. Fritz joins the Development Staff as Coordinator of Development Events, specifically Candlelight Ball, Veritas Dinner and Mass, Grandparents’ Day, Children’s Christmas and Easter parties and Walkathon Money Collection. She and her husband, Paul, have three daughters, Maggie (Sr.), Becky (Jr.) and Ashley (8th grade). Before having a family, Mrs. Fritz worked as a Systems Engineer with IBM but quit to become a stayat-home mom. Since then, she jokes that she has been a “professional volunteer” at the girls’ grade school, St. Peter Geneva, and here at Rosary as well as other charities in the Fox Valley.

Lisa Mosquera (Business Manager) Mrs. Mosquera is the new Business Manager of Rosary High School. She started as the part-time Assistant Business Manager in February 2010 and in September 2012 took over the Business Manager position. Mrs. Mosquera grew up in Minnesota and is a graduate of Moorhead State University. She is a KAIROS leader at Rosary and serves on the Mother Daughter Brunch Committee.

Mrs. Mosquera lives in Sugar Grove with her husband Paul and her four children Jordan (Rosary’11), Alex, Joseph, and Luke.

Vicki Danklefsen (Director of Communications) Mrs. Danklefsen joined Rosary as Director of Communications in August. Originally from Wisconsin, she earned her BS in Journalism from the University of WisconsinMadison, and worked for several newspapers including The Catholic Herald in Milwaukee.

She has worked in public relations for UW Hospital and Clinics in Madison and Bloomingdale schools. Most recently, she was the marketing consultant for the Greater Chicago office of New York Life.

She has been an active volunteer for St. Peter School, Rising Star Theatreworks, and other organizations. Mrs. Danklefsen lives in Geneva with her husband Jeff, daughter Jill (Rosary freshman) and son Adam (8th grade at St. Peter).

Sherry See (Director of Development) Mrs. See joined the Rosary staff as Director of Development in August. She earned her B.A. in Marketing from Indiana University and received her certification in secondary education from Benedictine University. Prior to joining the Rosary team, Mrs. See worked in sales and marketing of capital equipment in the packaging industry for five years, and was a substitute teacher who taught and tutored students at Rosary, Batavia, Metea Valley and Oswego High Schools. Mrs. See has also coordinated fundraising on a volunteer basis for schools and other non-profit organizations for 10 years. Mrs. See lives with her husband Craig and two sons Jeremy (Marmion’12), and Andy (MVHS ’15).

Mike Ferguson (Vocal and Instrumental Instructor) Mr. Ferguson is one of the new faces at Rosary this year. Coming from a background in both music education and church ministry, Mr. Ferguson’s new position as vocal and instrumental instructor is a perfect fit. He has spent the last 16 years in full-time ministry, serving as both a worship/liturgy director and Biblical instructor.

Prior to that, Mr. Ferguson was a high school choral director for nearly a decade. Mr. Ferguson lives in Plainfield with his wife, Karen, and their three children: Laura, Kevin, and

Michele Weber Smith (Director of Admissions) Mrs. Weber Smith, an ’83 Rosary graduate, joined the Rosary staff this August as the Director of Admissions. Mrs. Weber Smith attended College of DuPage where she received her Associates Degree in Applied Sciences/Travel and Tourism in 1985. She is also a flight attendant for American Airlines, and has been flying for 26 years. Mrs. Weber Smith has been married to her husband, Eric, for 24 years. They have two children: Matthew, a senior at Marmion Academy, and Lauren, an 8th grader at Annunciation.

Rosary 2012 Graduates Named AP Scholars Rosary High School is proud to announce that two 2012 Rosary graduates have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams.

Kelsey Arnold and Melissa Lifka qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher.

while in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both, for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the 1.6 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to earn an AP Scholar Award.

AP is accepted by more than 3,600 colleges and universities Kelsey Arnold worldwide for college credit, advanced placement, or both on the basis of successful AP Exam grades.

Student Spotlight Rosary Students Recognized by National Merit Scholarship Program Senior Colleen Madlinger has been named a semifinalist in the 58th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Madlinger is among 16,000 semifinalists from 1.5 million students in more than 22,000 high schools. From the semifinalists, 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level and will be notified in February of this designation.

Courtney Cox, Fabiola Villalpando, Jesika Barmanbek and Amelia Anderson, also seniors at Rosary, have been named commended students in the program. These scholasticallytalented seniors are recognized for their exceptional academic promise along with 34,000 commended students throughout the nation.

Amalia Mercado and Fabiola Villalpando were recognized by the National Hispanic Recognition Program which was established in 1983 through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. This program recognizes only 5,000 outstanding Hispanic/Latino students nationwide each year.

Qualifications for recognition are based on critical reading, mathematics and writing scores on the PSAT/NMSQT and a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

The students began the competition by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. To become a finalist, the semifinalists and their high schools must submit a detailed scholarship application with information on the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors and awards received. Semifinalists must have outstanding academic records throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

School Life Bringing the Courtroom to the Classroom Associate Judge Linda Abrahamson came to Rosary High School in September and presented a new program called Bringing the Courtroom to the Classroom to Ms. Denise Iffland’s American Government classes. This program was established by the Illinois Judges Association to promote a better understanding of the work of the courts, and to share information regarding important legal and constitutional issues.

Prior to Judge Abrahamson’s visit, the students read and discussed the United States Supreme Court case of New Jersey v. T.L.O. which decided a Fourth Amendment issue of concern to students: Is it constitutional for school officials to search a student’s possessions at school without a warrant?

Judge Abrahamson gave an overview of the three branches of government and the Illinois court system, then lead a discussion of the case and the real-world ramifications of the legal issues involved.

The program aims to demonstrate to students the important role our courts play in our society. Perhaps this experience will inspire some Rosary students to become the lawyers and

The Illinois Judges Association hopes to bring the program to 225 classrooms to commemorate the 225th anniversary of the Constitution of the United States.

Staff Attends Yearbook Camp Each summer, Rosary sends a few members of the yearbook staff to camp. The girls competed at the Midwest Yearbook Workshop held at St. Xavier University for three days in June. Schools come from Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois. The schools develop the theme and layouts for the coming year’s book and have the chance to work with artists from Dallas, Texas. They are judged on their mock yearbook that must include the cover, theme development, layouts, photography, copy and captions.

Illinois Music Educators Association District Festival Seniors Elise McArdle (french horn), Elizabeth Kupar (viola) and Molly Piech (alto) represented Rosary High at the District IX Illinois Music Educators Association Music Festival on November 17, 2012. They auditioned on October 2 at Addison Trail High School, and were chosen for the festival from a pool of over 2000 music students.

This audition was used to select All-State musicians for the 2013 IMEA Festival in January 2013. All-state musicians will be announced later this month.

Student Spotlight Thirteen Students Help with 13th Springfield Project The Springfield Project is a three-day service experience held in Springfield Illinois. This past summer was the 13th year that Rosary students attended. The girls worked at Mercy Home, a shelter for battered women and children. They helped clean out an abandoned house to prepare it for occupancy for the families. From there, the families work to regain their independence.

Students also worked at Jubilee Farm, an ecology and spirituality center where they helped weed the gardens. At St. Martin’s food and clothing pantry, the girls helped the elderly people who run the program do deep cleaning.

The girls also had fun visiting historical Lincoln sites, went bowling, and built a connection with the Dominican mother house, located in Springfield. They ate their meals there and got to know the sisters.

Thirteen students attended the Springfield Project this past year: Stephanie Ebert, Celine Italia, Maddy Hemmerich, Marie Zolfo, Sydney Price, Colleen Madlinger, Kianna Musaraca, Cecelia Kinane, Emma Knudtson, Juliana Froehlich, Erin Bowe, Breanna Sanchez, Amanda Saltijeral.

Plans are in the works for Rosary’s 14th annual Springfield Project in the summer of 2013.

Economics Class Tours the Fed, Board of Trade and More Students in Mrs. Roberta Stubing’s Economics class visited various locations in the Chicago Loop October 26. The first stop was the Chicago Federal Reserve. Mr. Don Wagner spoke about the history as well as the current role of the Fed and gave a tour of the interactive museum.

The next stop was the Chicago Board of Trade where Mrs. Liz Francis and Mrs. Joe Choinski of the CME group explained the trading process in the pits and the role that technology has played recently.

The students then visited the regional investment firm, William Blair & Company. There the Sullivan team gave a presentation about investing and tour of the various departments including bond and institutional trading as well as retail investing.

Terese Simonek Gravenhorst (Rosary Class of ’76) met with the group for lunch. Mrs. Gravenhorst graduated from Barat College with an economics degree and is employed by J.P. Morgan Chase. The final stop was a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago.

Making the trip were Economics students Kara Clark, Heather Glanville, Paige Robinson, Katie Fitzpatrick and Emma Doroff.

Campus Ministry Dominican Preachers

Have you even wondered what the “O.P.” stands for at the end of our Dominican sisters’ signatures? It stands for “Order of Preachers,” a title given to Dominican friars, brothers, nuns, sisters, and lay Dominicans the world over.

The Dominican Association of Secondary Schools sponsors an annual summer conference to connect Dominican high school students from the United States and Puerto Rico. In the Spring of their sophomore year, students are invited to apply for the Dominican Preaching team. Each year, faculty moderators Paul and Sandy Iwanski travel to Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan to attend the conference with four to six students who are entering their junior year.

Students who are chosen to attend this conference serve on the Dominican Preaching team for two years — which means we always have between eight and ten Dominican Preachers in our student body. Our newest Preachers (pictured at right with the Iwanskis) are juniors Sara Caligiuri, Abby Hammer, Devon James, Lauren Murray, Anna Ward and Angela Wrona. They join senior Preachers Margaret Archibald, Aimee Arvayo, Nicole Filardi and Taylor Gibson.

The Dominican Preacher action plan for this school year includes helping freshmen learn to make rosaries. As planned last year, they completed a hand-knotted, one-decade rosary for everyone who attended the opening liturgy for our 50th anniversary year. The Alumnae Association created royal blue satin cases for each 50th anniversary rosary.

Senior Retreat Team Rosary High School’s 2012-13 Senior Retreat Team gathered at LaSalle Manor in Plano for a two-day retreat to prepare for a year of serving the Rosary community. SRT plans one-day retreats for all grade levels, assists at liturgy, and serves in leadership roles throughout the year. In the spring of junior year, girls are invited to apply for this important ministry. They are selected based on their leadership potential and their willingness to share their faith.

Campus Ministry Prayer…..Study….Community…..Service The Dominican Pillars come to life as we look at the ways our girls have lived out the pillar of service. If we could attach a number to the Dominican challenge to “preach with our lives” it would be 20,483—that is the number of service hours Rosary students completed in the 2011-2012 school year. The numbers also tell us that preaching with our lives becomes more a part of life as we grow in the Rosary Dominican community: Last year’s seniors completed 7939 hours; juniors 5451 hours; sophomores 4351 hours; and freshmen 2742 hours.

Twice each year, students complete written theological reflections which become part of their service records. Students describe their service experiences: It inspired me…the innocence of these kids and the pureness of their hearts.

Each and every time I have gone on the Appalachian Service Project I have seen God: in the man whose house we had to make safe for him..in the group of people I was working with… in the smiling faces of the family we were helping..I could see God everywhere…I could see God in me!

I tutored this semester. God helped me show my student how interesting and important the study of life is. God helped me foster a great personal relationship with her as well.

Freshmen Hold Fall Retreat Deep Roots-Bold Dreams: Welcome to the Family was the theme of the October 17 freshman retreat. They explored the Dominican pillars of Prayer, Study, Community, and Preaching and looked at how the pillars shape life at Rosary. Through talks presented by the Senior Retreat Team and small group discussions, students looked at Dominican life. The SRT shared stories of what they love about being a Rosary girl.

Asked to choose one word to describe this gathering with other Rosary girls, the freshmen included: family, friendship, sisterhood, fun, beginnings, acceptance, hope, support. What a great beginning to the high school experience!

As part of the closing prayer service, each member of the class of 2016 wrote a letter to herself as she responded to reflection questions about her hopes and dreams for her years at Rosary, and how she experiences God in her life. Today’s freshman, like every Rosary girl, will find her freshman retreat letter in the envelope that holds her diploma in May of 2016.

My service reminded me of the feeding of 5000. Jesus was able to provide many hungry people with food, just like I was able to by helping out at the food pantry.

It feels good to know that I have a talent given by God that I can use to help somebody else.

I participated in the Hope D Wall School Christmas party…I participate every year and every year I volunteer there I love it even more…the smiles are priceless…it encourages me to keep volunteering.

In 2011-2012, 111 students received service awards. Students who complete 200+ hours of service in a school year receive the Dominican Service Award. Service awards are also presented to students who complete 100+ and 50+ hours in one school year.

Service Requirements All Rosary students have an annual ten-hour service commitment, but most students surpass this goal. Celebrate Seniors It’s a tradition! On September 25, seniors set aside the morning to celebrate the start of their graduation year. The Senior Retreat Team led their classmates through a review of the years they have spent at Rosary, and invited each student to choose one word that summed up her goal for a beautiful senior year. The morning had everything needed for a great celebration: eating, talking, sharing, praying and singing.

Freshmen Make Rosaries Spearheaded by the Action Plan of our Dominican Preachers, on October 25th, our freshman Theology classes welcomed Sr. Jean Patrick Ernhart, a Dominican sister of Springfield, who taught our girls how to hand-knot a rosary. Colored twine and tangled fingers soon led to carefully crafted prayer beads as Sr. Jean Patrick, assisted by our Dominican Preachers, helped students make a rosary that is truly their own.

The days leading up to Rosary’s all-school celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary found freshmen huddled in study hall, at the lunch table, in the library and in the hallway tying knots and showing their friends how to craft a rosary.

Events and Clubs Big Sisters Welcome Little Sisters to Rosary On the day before classes began for all students, the freshman class of 2016 and transfer students were welcomed by their Big Sisters from the class of 2014.

to get to know each other. Student Ambassadors shared their personal thoughts about why Rosary is such a great place for young women, then the girls toured the school. The day ended with a fashion show of uniform “do’s & don’ts.”

The Rosary Student Ambassadors were also on-hand to speak with the girls, give tours of the school and to make the new Rosary girls feel at home.

The morning started with a great breakfast provided by Parents’ Auxiliary and a chance for the Big and Little Sisters

8th Grade Get-Together On Thursday, Oct. 11, Rosary hosted 68 girls at our annual 8th Grade Get-Together. The girls in attendance came from a variety of public and private schools. The girls enjoyed a pizza dinner, and had a chance to visit with Rosary Student Ambassadors as well as 8th grade girls from other schools.

The girls made 15 fleece baby blankets which were donated to the Pregnancy Information Center in Aurora.

Coat Drive 10

Rosary clubs USA Leaders and Las Hermanitas sponsored a Coat Drive at Rosary this Fall, filling four large bins with coats to be donated to those in need.

SAFE Club: Red Ribbon Week Rosary’s SAFE Club planned many activities during Red Ribbon Week (Oct. 23-31) to increase student awareness about drug and alcohol abuse factually and spiritually. Club members began each day of Red Ribbon Week with a prayer and told the story of how the event originated. During the past three years, the SAFE Club has established standards and traditions for Red Ribbon Week at Rosary, including handing out red ribbons to all staff and students to wear, praying for those whose lives are affected by alcohol and drug addiction, educating students about drug and alcohol abuse, and having the entire student body sign a Red Ribbon Week banner pledging to take a stand against drug and alcohol use.

This year’s banner was displayed in the foyer next to the banners from the prior two years.

The goal of Rosary’s SAFE Club is to educate students on staying safe. This year the club is bringing awareness to drug and alcohol abuse, the danger of texting while driving, and bullying. The members are also involved with several activities including Picnic for Peace at Phillips Park, Operation Snow Ball, and pre-prom drug and alcohol education and awareness.

Events and Clubs Rosary Day Because October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, was on a Sunday, we celebrated Rosary Day on Friday, October 5. The whole community gathered to pray the prayer that names our school. The rosary is a gift to us from St. Dominic, who received it from the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a contemplative prayer: a gentle prayer that points us in the direction of taking time to reflect ... to be still ... to consider who we are and whose we are ... to think about our life’s journey.

Our shared prayer led us right into another community event: a picnic! The courtyard, foyer, and cafeteria provided picnic spots as all enjoyed the chance for hot dogs and a change-of-pace lunchtime. The lunchtime stars were Parent Auxiliary volunteers who prepared and served our delightful picnic lunch. In celebration of our 50th Anniversary, lunchtime included a DJ playing the hits of the 1960s.

Rosary/Marmion Pep Club What’s the newest sensation hitting Rosary and Marmion?

Rosary and Marmion are bringing back the all fan-fabulous Pep Club.

The co-ed club has worked diligently to support both schools’ varsity teams. Some of the highlights have been the making of super fan banners for these premier athletes, boosting fan attendance for specific events, collaborating with our brother school to enhance student relationships, and assisting in leading our fan section to cheers of victory for our sports.

Pep Club is led under the guidance of Mrs. Laura Ruddy (Rosary English Teacher) and is assisted greatly by Sr. Patricia Burke, Dr. Quaid, Mrs. Garofalo, Mrs. Carlson, and the Executive Boards of the Rosary Rowdies and the Cadet Crazies.

Pep Club will continue to grow and foster positive energized people for the winter and spring sport seasons! If you haven’t joined, it is not too late—we are always looking for more super fans!

FreshFest 2012 Rosary’s Parents Auxiliary began what looks to become a new tradition this year by hosting the inaugural FreshFest on August 12, welcoming all new Rosary and Marmion freshmen to an evening of fun, games and food before the start of school. About 165 freshmen attended

Development The Annual Rosary Appeal is Underway The Rosary Appeal is our annual major funding campaign that runs from late October through the end of June. The focus of the Rosary Appeal this year is three-fold: bridging the tuition gap, increasing the number of merit-based scholarships, and funding technology initiatives.

The tuition gap is the difference between tuition and the actual cost of educating one young woman at Rosary. This year, Rosary’s tuition gap stands at $2900. Please keep in mind that nearly all Catholic high schools experience this “gap”; the national average for tuition gap is $2100. Your donation to the Rosary Appeal enables us to bridge this gap and allows us so much more flexibility when addressing the financial needs of the school.

The Rosary Appeal is also focused on increasing the number of available merit-based scholarships. Generations of parents tell us that their daughters have excelled in all facets of life thanks to the foundation provided by their Rosary education. Colleges actively recruit Rosary women as evidenced by $13.4 million in college scholarships awarded last year.

By attracting “the best and the brightest”, this Rosary legacy will continue well into the 21st century.

Candlelight Ball Candlelight Ball to Celebrate Past, Launch the Next 50 Years The Rosary High School 50th Anniversary Candlelight Ball is quickly approaching. This year’s dinner dance and auction will be held in the Regency Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel in Lisle, IL on February 23, 2013. The event begins with a cocktail hour from 5:30 to 6:30 pm followed by a sit-down dinner and dancing.

The highlight of the evening will be our silent and live auctions, all designed to help us raise funds to further the mission of the Dominican Sisters here at Rosary.

While this anniversary year has focused on celebrating the school’s first half century, the theme of this year’s Candlelight Ball is “Launching the Next 50 Years.” With that in mind, we’ve focused our efforts on bringing technology to bear on the event. Our new Candlelight Ball website, www.rhscb. com is up and running. Each month, items will be featured on the online auction. Congratulations to Kim Caligiuri who won our first online auction, (2) tickets to see Grease at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora. Kim also won the second, and certainly more exciting, auction item, a personalized front row parking space near the gym entrance, for her daughter, Sara.

Athletics Fall Sports Summary Tennis: Royals Tennis finishes their 2012 season with a 4-4 record, placing 3rd overall in the SCC Conference.

1st Doubles Team (Andrea Goyao & Megan Conlin) lead the way taking 1st place in the Rosary Invitational. This dynamic duo also placed 2nd in the Sectional Tournament qualifying them to go onto the IHSA State Tournament, (2-2 at State). This is Andrea Goyao’s second year advancing to the State tournament.

2nd Doubles Team (Maddy Deufel & Paige Robinson) finished a strong 2nd place in the SCC Conference meet.

Golf: The Golf team finished the 2012 season taking 2nd place in the Regional and qualified the entire team to Sectionals (finished 3rd). The Royals were paced by Victoria Phipps who qualified for the IHSA State Golf Tournament, ( 50th overall in the state).

Vickie became the 4 State qualifier in Rosary’s golf history dating back to 1995. She joins Jennifer Binder, Raquel DeBartolo and Kristin Stencel in this select group. th

Overall, Golf finished the 2012 season with a 6-4 record.

Cross Country: Cross Country finished their 2012 season 3rd place in the SCC . The Royals advanced a strong team to Regionals, placing 6th overall and qualifying the team to Sectionals. Senior Kara Kalisz qualified for second year in a row to the IHSA Cross Country State Meet improving her PB by over 18 seconds. ( 75th out of 209 runners) The Freshmen/Sophomores saw much success this season winning the 2012 City Meet, (back to back City Meet Champions), and 2012 Plainfield North Invite.

Volleyball: Volleyball finished another successful regular season under a new coaching regime. Rosary Volleyball Alum Rachel Hartmann took over the head coaching position in 2012 and led the Royals to a 7 -3 record, taking 2nd place in the Blue Division of the SCC Conference, and overall record of 2314. Seniors Kate Stefanski and Marissa Prochaska will sign their NCAA National Letters of Intent to play volleyball in mid November.

Sophomore Volleyball finished the 2012 season 8-4 in the SCC (3rd place), 20-13 overall.

Freshman Volleyball finished the 2012 season 5-5 (3rd in SCC) and 13-20-1 overall.

JV Volleyball took home a 1st place finish in the Somonauk Tournament and posted a 16-7 overall record for 2012.

Swimming & Diving: The BEADS finished the 2012 regular season with a 10-1 record placing 4th overall in the Metro Catholic Conference.

JV Swim also had a strong season posting a 8-3 record and finishing 4th in the Metro Catholic Conference.

The BEADS are re-building this year with their entire Sectional team comprised of ALL under classmen.

The Beads participated in the 2012 IHSA State Swimming & Diving Meet November 16-17. Congratulations to State Meet finalists Annie Gosselin who placed 9th in the 100-meter backstroke and Erin Hart who placed 11th in the 100-meter Freestyle. Gooooo….BEADS!!

Athletics Rosary BEADs Raise Funds for “Real Swimmers Wear Pink” The Rosary Beads Swim Team participated in their first Real Swimmers Wear Pink event which raises money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Freshman Lauryn Streid is one of the founders of this charity and was excited to bring it to the Beads this year.

On October 22, the team held a breaststroke practice to support the fight against breast cancer. The swimmer who brought in the most donations won the chance to throw a pie in the face of Head Coach Bill Schalz. There was a tie and Bill was kind enough to let both of the girls throw pies at him. Erin Hart and Annie Gosselin were the lucky winners.

The Beads raised more than $1,000 in donations and t-shirt sales. The swimmers had a great time while raising money for an important cause.

Walk-A-Thon 2012 a Huge Success

The Rosary Sports Boosters held their annual Italian Dinner to benefit Rosary athletic programs on October 20, 2012. More than 225 people enjoyed a night “Under the Tuscan Sky,” with dinner provided by Papa Saverio’s.

The theme of this year’s Walk-a-thon was Disney Dash and students did more than dash as they finished the walk in record time (even though it’s not a race!) and they sprinted past their goal of $40,000!

This year we had 24 baskets created by Jane Nasharr, Laurie Carey and Sue Paradis through the donations of our fall sport athletes who also served as waitresses. Early bird “Lotto” winners were Nick Bauler: $500; Dan Ricci: $100 and Linda Fritz: $50.

The night was a huge success bringing in more than $5300 to benefit ALL our Rosary athletic programs!

The girls raised $45,805.50 in their efforts toward the Annual Appeal.

Our top pledge turnin came from Melissa Bronski who raised $1117, next was Courtney Swickert with $500, and Kathryn Leonardi with $400. Eighteen girls brought in $200 or more in pledges and nineteen girls $150 or more.

Top homeroom was Sr. Bernie’s room who brought in $3067. They earned the special breakfast. The top class who receives the special lunch prize went to the Freshmen who brought in $12,182 averaging $128 per student. Congrats to the faculty and students for exceeding our goal and getting our free day on the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving.

In keeping with the Disney theme, seniors were princesses, juniors dressed in colors from The Lion King, sophomores in purple and black for Mulan, and freshmen in the colors of Finding Nemo.

The Rosary Strategic Planning Working Group – comprised primarily of faculty and staff – worked through the strategic objectives to identify nine bold goals for the future. Rosary faculty and staff, with the selective involvement of appropriate board members and other stakeholders with specific expertise, are involved in shaping multiple and specific action items, benchmarks and timelines for each.

1. Clearly define the profile(s) of the Rosary Woman.

2. Over the next five years, grow the enrollment to reach – and sustain – 450-475 students.

3. Build an academic program in concert with the

mission and the Rosary Woman. Ensure the allocation of appropriate resources – instructors, materials, technology, equipment.

4. Establish and promote “distinguishing programs”

that highlight Rosary’s singular mission and differentiate itself from the competition in the market.

(2) Market & Promote the Rosary difference.

Alumnae The Dominican Alumnae Awards Recognize Service, Spirit and Professional Excellence What is the Dominican Alumnae Award?

The purpose of establishing the Dominican Alumnae Awards is to recognize graduates who model the mission of Rosary High School and who live the truth (Veritas) as taught by Jesus Christ. Rosary High School is committed to the mission of educating and developing Christian leaders in the Dominican tradition: encouraging faith development, seeking truth, striving for academic excellence and lifelong learning, developing individual gifts, valuing Christian service and fostering responsible members for society.

What is the criteria for the Dominican Alumnae Award?

These nominees must have graduated from Rosary High School at least 10 years ago. These graduates may be one of great standing in their community or one who serves others through their quiet dedication to Christian ideals. Through a life of service, they use their gifts to further Christ’s teachings and is thereby an inspiration to peers as well as to students of Rosary High School. These graduates may come from any walk of life, any part of the country or any area of involvement. These awards may be presented to more than one recipient during a given year.

Service Award: This nominee must exhibit service that goes beyond their job, over and above what is required of them in their lives.

Professional Excellence: This award is based on recognition from professional organizations / peers, education, leadership and must have strong values and morals.

Rosary Spirit: This nominee demonstrates loyalty to Rosary

Who can nominate a Rosary High School Graduate?

Rosary alumnae, parents, past parents, supporters, faculty and students, may make nominations. The nominee must have graduated from Rosary at least 10 years ago. Candidates may receive both awards, but not in the same year.

Deadline for the nominations is Monday, January 7, 2013.

The Rosary High School Alumnae Association is currently accepting nominations for the Dominican Alumnae Award for Service, Spirit and Professional Excellence. The selection is made by a panel of faculty and staff without knowledge of the candidates’ identity. The recipient will be honored at Rosary’s Candle Rose Ceremony on Friday, May 17, 2013.

The Sister Mary Joseph Scholarship is available for daughters of alumnae. This scholarship is given to the alumna’s daughter receiving the highest test score at the Rosary Placement Exam. This scholarship is for $1000 a year for four years.

You can also keep your information up to date in your profile. Don’t forget to notify us for all address, phone and email address changes. Not only do the address changes save Rosary postage, but you will continue to receive your Rosary Review Magazine. When your mail comes back as “unable to forward,” we take your address out of our system.

Eighth graders seeking admission into Rosary High School must take the “Scholastic Testing Service High School Placement Exam.” This standard indicator and the information gathered from parents, teachers and grade school transcripts are used to determine acceptance to Rosary.

Please bring the completed Application for Admission and the Release of Information form and return them to Rosary with the $30 testing fee prior to or on the day of the exam.

How the Alumnae Association Helps Rosary High School The Alumnae Association has raised over $50,000 in support of Rosary High School. One of the most visible contributions of the Association is the lighted marquee board and Veritas shields which are now part of Rosary’s front sign. Each day the events and successes of Rosary High School are communicated to the public as they pass-by on Edgelawn Drive.

The Sr. Mary Joseph Alumnae Scholarship is supported solely by the fundraising efforts of the Alumnae Association. Each year the daughter of a Rosary graduate is awarded the scholarship based on her performance on the school’s entrance exam. The four-year scholarship is currently valued at $4,000. Donations to the scholarship fund may be made by contacting the Rosary Development Office at (630) 896-0831 extension 13.

Sell Your Dresses at Rosary Fashion Show & Sale Calling all Alumnae! Could you use some extra cash? Do you have a one, two or more dresses that are taking up space in your closet but are still in great condition?

Once again, Rosary’s National Honor Society is sponsoring a “gently worn dress sale” and Fashion Show.

Here’s what to do: Look through your closet! Bring your “gently worn” semi-formal, formal and/or salute dresses to Rosary during the designated collection dates during the month of December. Dates and times are posted on the Rosary Website.

The process is easy! You set the selling price for your dress(es). They will be displayed and/or modeled the day of the Fashion Show and Dress Sale… Sunday, January 27, 2013. Proceeds will be mailed to you, less a 10% commission which goes toward Rosary Scholarships.

This year our Show & Sale is “multi-generational.” This means mature women, young women and “better” little girls dresses will ALL be for sale! Watch for the Collection Dates and mark your calendar to attend the Fashion Show & Sale on January 27, 2013.

Class of 1974 Dr. Lorene (Fabrizius) Eckberg received the Dr. Dreyer Award of Excellence in June. She has served for six years on the Dreyer Medical Board of Directors. She is active in the community, routinely volunteering her time at Rosary High School performing annual physicals; free sports exams for young Special Olympics athletes: and the Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon providing medical coverage.

Class of 1984 Anastasia (Stacie Daleiden) Yokosawa & her husband Martin celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary on May 11, 2012 with her sister, Stephanie (Stevie Daleiden ‘83) joining them in Chicago. “My family has always been very close & we just have so much fun together; besides, my sister has always been my husband’s biggest fan so we said, Why not?!” Their beautiful daughter, Dominique, is 7 years old & will be in 3rd grade next fall. Her oldest stepson, Niko Yokosawa, graduated from U of I with a degree in Finance, in May. Stacie also celebrated her 22nd year at The Daleiden Mortuary in April, 2012 & her husband continues to grow his investment business, Torii Asset Management, (in its 4th year) with great success. We are all very blessed!

Class of 1987 In 2011, Linda Cibulskis was a finalist and winner of the Nursing Excellence Award in the category of Management for the Mountain West Region (which includes AZ, NV, WA, OR, NM). This award is sponsored by Nurse.com NurseWeek (website as well as a monthly magazine for nurses). She was humbled and honored that her colleagues nominated her for this award.

She is currently working as House Supervisor at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, summer 2012, she celebrated her 21st year with Mayo Clinic.

Class of 1990 Rhonda (Ayala) and Edward Bartosik announce the birth of their daughter, Eliana “Ellie” Noelle Bartosik, born 8/27/2012. Ellie weighed 5 lbs and 10 oz. and was 18.5 inches long.

Class of 1992 Andrea Hensley has returned to using her maiden name in memory of her father who passed away in 2010. She is a proud mother of three boys: Andrew is 11, Timothy is 9, and Benjamin is 4. She resides in a tiny town named Mulvane, KS. She teaches at Derby Middle School in the Special Education Classroom.

Class of 1999 Kevin and Kimberly (Fidler) Becker welcomed their second child Jillian Theresa Becker on 5/5/12. Jillian was born in Burlington, IA weighing in at 7lbs 5oz and 20” long. Jillian joins her big sister, Madeline (2 years old).

Class of 2000 Kristen Pierce Sharp sent in an update. Kristen has moved to Wisconsin and is now an Ob/Gyn with the University of Wisconsin.

Class of 2002 Kathryn (Reynolds) Gault and her husband Santo announce the birth of their daughter, Margaret Michelle on 4/25/2012.

Margaret weighed in at 7 lbs, 12 oz. and was 21 inches long.

Santo is a driver/sales Superior Beverage. Grace (2 years old) is the big sister. The family lives in Aurora.

Stephanie (Collins) Johnson and her husband, Greg announced the birth of their first child, Theodore Patrick on 9/23/2012. He weighed 7 pounds 15 ounces and was 21 inches long.

Class of 2003 Sonya (Lo Destro) and her husband, Timothy Kolowski (below) announce the birth of their son, Jacob Robert on 7/21/2012. Jacob weighed 3 lbs. 11 oz. And was 17 inches long. Sonya is a high school math teacher and Timothy is a Yorkville Police Officer.

Alumnae Class of 2005 Kathy McCarthy married Michael Nothnagel (Marmion Class of 2005) on 5/26/2012 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in St. Charles, IL. Lauren Timm ‘05 was Maid of Honor; Carolyn Nothnagel ‘01, sister of the groom, was a bridesmaid.

Elizabeth Edwards married Shane Albright on 3/26/2012 at Chapel of the Flowers in LasVegas, NV. A reception was held on 6/30/2012 at Blackberry Historical Farm.

Beth is a student at Everest College studying massage therapy. She is employed at Precision Health Care. Shane is an Oswego High School graduate, and is employed by the Hollywood Casino. The couple resides in Aurora.

Class of 2006 Abby Nickels graduated from the Air Force Academy on May 26, 2010, as a officer in the US Air Force. On 4/5/2011, she began the 52week training to become an Air Force pilot at Columbus AFB, MS. She completed the first phase of training in September of 2011 in the T-6 Texan-A earning 100 flying hours. From there she moved on to the advanced jet fighter supersonic trainer, the T-38C Talon, a plane reserved for only the top pilots in a class of about 27 people. After a total of 635.4 hours of ground training, 58.9 hours of simulator time, over 200 flying hours, and over 15 tests, Abby graduated pilot training and earned her Air Force pilot wings on June 15, 2012. She moved to Hurlburt Field, FL, to fly the U-28A for the AF Special Operations Forces in September.

She is proud to serve with her three brothers, who graduated from Marmion and are all in the Army, and with her brother-in-law, who recently retired from the Navy.

Class of 2008 Jean Danner updates her address and occupation. She is living in Kansas City, Missouri, and is a registered nurse in the Emergency Department at Truman Medical Center.
