On the Cover A Marmion/Rosary Band First: Both Drum Majors Rosary Students This Fall’s marching band season marked the first time in history that we have had two female drum majors—senior Julia Hoyda and junior Maggie Eallonardo, said Marmion/Rosary Band Director Stephen Thurlow. “We have had drum majors from Rosary in the past, but not two at once.” The duties of a drum major include conducting, overseeing field rehearsals and making sure everyone is in place, and helping band members with placement and counts, Julia said. Candidates for drum major are given some technical conducting exercises and a recorded score from the upcoming field show and a few weeks to practice before auditions. “We held our annual auditions and these two girls did an outstanding job.”Mr. Thurlow said. “Julia and Maggie are extraordinary musicians,” And I think their experience as performers and dancers also helps them in this role. Understanding the relationship between music and movement helps with conducting.” Both students are also section leaders in the band. Julia has been 1st trombone for three years, and Maggie has been 1st flute/ piccolo for three years as well. Senior Julia Hoyda, who also plays the cello, waited until her senior year to audition for drum major. The theme of this year’s halftime show, voted on by the band members, was James Bond. “We loved the theme,” Julia said. “The sound of the band as a whole was very strong this year.” One highlight of the year for Julia: playing the opening trombone solo for Live and Let Die from the drum major’s conducting stand (see above). The band has about 70 members, and marching season is from summer through mid-to-late October depending on the playoff successes of the football team. The band meets every morning at 6:30 a.m. at Marmion. A bus drives the girls to Rosary before the start of school. In addition to the halftime shows, the band marched in the Fiestas Patrias parade and participated in two competitions. At Marengo, the band finished second in the parade, fourth in the field show, and second overall. “In Sandwich, we placed fourth, but less than one-half point separated second, third and fourth places,” Mr. Thurlow said. Maggie Eallonardo has played the flute and the piccolo since fourth grade, and is also on the Rosary Dance Team. She auditioned for drum major because she wanted to take a leadership role within the band. “I also wanted to further my knowledge of the different parts of the band,”

she said. Maggie hopes to try out for drum major again next year as a senior. The Marmion/Rosary Band started in the 1980s when Sister Regina and Father Peter got together and decided to combine the band program, Mr. Thurlow said. Janice (Fisher ’86) Dickerson was the first girl in the band. Janice played French Horn and joined part-way through her freshman year. As a sophomore, she also joined the marching band. “I borrowed a uniform from one of the guys on the football team. It was fairly surprising to many, especially the first time I took my hat off and everyone realized I was a girl. The guys in the band were great to me,” she said. “We promoted her to battalion commander,” Mr. Thurlow said. “Outstanding Rosary drum majors through the years who come to mind are Mary Dunn (’08), Catherine Dougherty (’95) and Rachel Maley (’10),” Mr. Thurlow said. Marmion recently started a new program for middle school students (boys and girls) called the West Suburban Catholic Junior Band. Most local Catholic schools have band programs but this will give a consistency to the program, Mr. Thurlow said. “It is built to encourage and extend their musical experience and prepare them to perform at the high school level.”

Color Guard Adds to Halftime Show and Parades The Marmion/Rosary Band color guard program was rebuilt this year with seven members, none of whom had previous experience. Coaches are Mrs. Carrie Huebner and Samantha Dedic (’10) who was on the flag team while at Rosary. “The flags were quite competitive this year,” Mr. Thurlow said. “We have had great flag corps in the past, but the continuity is what has been lacking. These are very hard-working, talented, and dedicated girls. The coaching and nurturing has really come together to rebuild the program.” The group rehearsed twice a week all summer, then daily during band camp and marching band season. “The girls really stepped up,” Mrs. Huebner said. “At the Sandwich competition, we tripled our score from last year. Next year, we hope to have three groups: Competition, varsity and junior varsity. The team continues to practice through the year, and several new students have joined for Winter Guard. Girls who want to give flags a try are encouraged to join now.

What’s New at Rosary Rosary Participates in Convocation of Dominican Secondary Schools Administrators, teachers, and staff from nineteen Dominican schools throughout the country gathered at the Hilton hotel in Lisle, Illinois, for the fifth Convocation of Dominican Secondary Schools October 22-24. The theme of the Convocation was “Preaching Human Dignity in our Schools.” The Convocation was organized by the Dominican Association of Secondary Schools (DASS), an organization “dedicated to helping Dominican secondary schools throughout the country promote and maintain their Dominican identity through formation and networking opportunities,” said DASS President, Sr. Jane Meyer, OP. The opening prayer Tuesday evening highlighted the historical founding of the Dominican Order and proclaimed how “the preaching continues” across the globe and in each of 24 Dominican high schools in the U.S. today. Sr. Mary Paul McCaughey, OP, Superintendent of Schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago and a former Rosary teacher, exhorted the group to remember that their “very existence as schools is grounded in reverence for the human person, deeply embedded in the words and actions of Jesus and in the teachings of the Church…. As Dominican educators, we always preach the dignity of the human person in the context of prayer, study, community, and service.” Wednesday morning’s sessions began with prayer provided by the student preachers from Rosary High School. The day featured a keynote address, additional speakers, and breakout sessions.

The Dominican Association of Secondary of Secondary Schools (DASS) is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 that seeks to promote the Dominican charism of Veritas (Truth) with its four pillars of prayer, study, community and preaching, within and beyond the Dominican school community. It currently serves 24 Dominican high schools throughout the U.S., providing networking and formation opportunities. For more information, visit dominicanschools.org.

The Convocation ended on Thursday morning with an All Schools’ Eucharistic Liturgy celebrating the 800th Anniversary of the Dominican Order. In total about 500 people—personnel from the six Dominican high schools in the Chicago area, along with Convocation attendees—gathered at the Candida Lund Auditorium of Dominican University in River Forest for the celebratory event. Nearly all Rosary High School faculty and staff were in attendance at the Mass.

Rosary High School began publishing an electronic newsletter last October. The newsletter includes Rosary news and photographs as well as information on upcoming events. It comes out every two weeks and is sent to all current parents, past parents, faculty, board members, and friends of Rosary for whom we have email addresses. It is not sent to alumnae as they receive a monthly newsletter especially for them. If you do not receive this newsletter and would like to receive it, be sure to register your email address at our website http:// rosaryhs.com. Look for the Register Now or Login links at the top of the page. You can also read the newsletter online at http:// rosaryhs.com/newsletter.

Rosary Hosts Girls from El Salvador

Students Open FBLA Express

Rosary hosted several girls visiting from El Salvador with Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (Spanish for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”). Pictured above are 17-year-olds Ana Lidia and Jacqueline with Señora Rebenstorf ’s Spanish IV Honors class. The girls were part of a larger group visiting the United States to spread awareness and raise funds for NPH.

Rosary High School’s FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) club operates a school store called FBLA Express in the snack bar area every Wednesday morning from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m.

Founded in 1954, NPH is currently raising more than 3,300 boys and girls in group homes in Mexico, Central and South America. The families of Rosary students Sophie Barrett, Cassie and Natalie Duck, Rebecca and Ashley Fritz, Amy Iwatsuki and Anna Ward, as well as Aurora Weed’s grandparents, all served as host families to the group of teens as they visited parishes, schools and businesses in the Chicago area.

The store carries lined paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, correction tape, sticky notes, glue sticks, tissues, posterboard, note cards, and hand sanitizer, as well as fun and trendy items selected by the FBLA members. FBLA Express provides a hands-on learning experience for the club members, says Business teacher Gerri Kramer. They learn about cost and profit, customer service, making change, ordering and checking in merchandise, accounting, and advertising. They also learn the risks and rewards of being entrepreneurs.

Student Spotlight FreshFest 2013 Rosary’s Parents Auxiliary hosted the school’s second annual FreshFest on August 11, welcoming all new Rosary and Marmion freshmen to an evening of fun, games and food before the start of school.

Big Sisters Welcome Little Sisters

NHS Dress Sale/Fashion Show

The freshman class and transfer students were welcomed to Rosary by their Big Sisters from the class of 2015 on the day before classes began for all students. Parents Auxiliary provided breakfast, and the Big and Little Sisters got to know each other. The Student Ambassadors were also on hand to speak with the girls and give tours.

Rosary’s National Honor Society is again holding their annual Fashion Show and gently-worn Dress Sale. This is an opportunity for girls and women to sell their gently worn semiformal, formal, and Salute dresses. Dresses will be modeled and/ or displayed the day of the show. Dress donors pay a $5 fee per dress (up to $20) to enter dresses into the show/sale, but get set their own prices, and profits from dress sales are mailed two weeks after the show. All funds raised from the dress entry fees and ticket sales go to the Rosary Scholarship Fund. This year’s sale will be on Sunday, February 23, and dress donation drop off dates will be posted on the Rosary website. This is a great way to make more room in your closet while giving back to Rosary! Even if you don’t have dresses to sell, plan to attend the show to see some of the latest styles modeled by our Rosary students. Tickets will be on sale beginning in February. Contact Julie Jeppesen, NHS Advisor, for more information at jjeppesen@rosaryhs.com or (630) 896-0831.

Rosary Receives Donation from Aurora Catholic Education Foundation The Aurora Catholic Education Foundation provides financial support to the Aurora parishes for the purpose of Catholic religious education. “We strive to support all of the educational endeavors of the local Catholic grade schools, all three Catholic high schools, and parish religious education programs. Rosary High School received a generous donation of $2,519 this year, and has received a total of $102, 592 from the ACEF since its founding in 1973. A number of Rosary faculty and staff helped to celebrate the organization’s 40th anniversary in September with a Mass at St. Joseph Church and a dinner at the Fox Valley Country Club.

Rosary Students Continue to Achieve High ACT Scores Rosary High School’s graduating class of 2013 achieved an average ACT composite score of 25.7 according to numbers released by ACT. The ACT average composite score in Illinois is 20.6 and the national average is 20.9 for 2013 graduates. The ACT is a curriculum-based test of educational development in English, mathematics, reading and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in the first year of college. ACT research has shown that it is the rigor of the coursework rather than simply the number of core courses that has the greatest impact in ACT performance and college readiness. The top 10 percent of Rosary students scored an average of 32.75, and the top 25 percent of Rosary students scored an average of 28. For more statistics and charts on Rosary’s ACT scores, visit our website.

Crayons for Kids Now in its ninth year, the Crayons for Kids program collected 35,198 packages of new school supplies last August for distribution to more than 90 public and parochial schools and agencies in the Fox Valley region of Illinois. More than 100 volunteers from Marmion Academy and Rosary High School, including students, staff, parents and alumni, collected school supplies and monetary donations at 11 area Jewel-Osco stores and one Wal-Mart store. Monetary donations are used to fund field trips, clothing needs and other classroom requests. Crayons for Kids was founded by Brian Zimmerman (Marmion ‘07) to provide school supplies to children in need. The focus is on “Kids Helping Kids.” Brian’s sister Monica Zimmerman (at right) is a Rosary sophomore.

Campus Ministry Dominican Preachers Have you even wondered what the “O.P.” stands for at the end of our Dominican sisters’ signatures? It stands for “Order of Preachers,” a title given to Dominican friars, brothers, nuns, sisters, and lay Dominicans the world over. The Dominican Association of Secondary Schools sponsors an annual summer conference to connect Dominican high school students from the United States and Puerto Rico. In Spring of sophomore year, students are invited to apply for a spot on the Dominican Preaching team. Each year, faculty moderators Paul and Sandy Iwanski travel to Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan to attend the conference with four students who are entering their junior year. Students who are chosen to attend this conference serve on the Dominican Preaching team for two years - which means we always have between eight and ten Dominican Preachers in our student body. Our newest Preachers are juniors Sophie Barrett, Jill Bottarini, Katie Higgins, Alyssa Mertka, Mallory Rettenmeier and Elayne Young. They join senior Preachers Sara Caligiuri, Abby Hammer, Devon James, Lauren Murray, Anna Ward and Angela Wrona.

In October, our Rosary Preachers led Morning Prayer for the national gathering of the Dominican Association of Secondary Schools. Building on the theme “Open the Doors to My Heart,” the prayer opened this national convocation as they explored the theme of diversity in our Dominican schools.

Senior Retreat Team

Freshmen Make Rosaries

Rosary High School’s 2013-14 Senior Retreat Team gathered at LaSalle Manor in Plano for a two-day retreat to prepare for a year of serving the Rosary community. SRT plans the one-day retreats for all grade levels, assists at liturgy, leads Advent and Lent lunchtime Bridges groups, and serves in leadership roles throughout the year. In the spring of junior year, girls are invited to apply for this important ministry. They are selected based on their leadership potential and their willingness to share their faith with the Rosary community.

Spearheaded by the Action Plan of our Dominican Preachers, our freshman Theology classes welcomed Sr. Jean Patrick Ernhart, a Dominican sister of Springfield, who taught our girls how to hand-knot a rosary.

Pictured at their retreat are Sara Caligiuri, Rachel Choice, Jayne Garceau, Abby Hammer, Devon James, Ali Krantz, Stephanie McDermott, Siobhan Midgley, Lauren Murray, Victoria Phipps, Rachel Rhodes, Amanda Saltijeral, Jessica Suchaczewski, Anna Ward, Sarah Wilkinson, and Sydney Zaragoza.

You can experience the preaching of these young women in person and in print. A Student Preacher offers a reflection at every mass and prayer service. These reflections are also posted on our Rosary website. Check under the News archive.

Colored twine and tangled fingers soon led to carefully crafted prayer beads as Sr. Jean Patrick helped students make a rosary that is truly their own. The days leading up to our all-school celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary found freshmen huddled in study hall, at the lunch table, in the library and in the hallway tying knots and showing their friends how to craft a rosary.

Campus Ministry Freshman Retreat

Service Hours

Deep Roots-Bold Dreams: Welcome to the Family was the theme of the October 16 freshman retreat. Senior Retreat Team led our the newest members of our Rosary family as they explored the Dominican pillars of Prayer, Study, Community, and Preaching and looked at how the pillars shape life at Rosary. Through talks presented by the Senior Retreat Team and small group discussions, students looked at Dominican life. The SRT shared stories of what they love about being a Rosary girl.

Reflecting the Dominican tradition to “preach with our lives” all Rosary students have an annual ten-hour service commitment. While the handbook can share logistics for completing and recording service hours, it cannot provide a picture of the impact our girls’ service has on the community. They serve in parishes and in nursing homes, in hospitals and with the Girl Scouts, they help disabled children experience the thrill of riding a horse and serve dinner to guests in a homeless shelter. See our Rosary website for more information about our service program and to learn about upcoming service opportunities. To add your favorite charity to the list of not-for-profit agencies posted on our website, contact the Campus Ministry Office, siwanski@rosaryhs.com.

Celebrate Seniors The freshman class crafted a banner for our foyer prayer space! Each small group chose one word to describe their Rosary experience and the group illustrated the word on a fabric square that became part of the prayer banner. Our prayer banner words include: united, acceptance, family, unique, out of the box, a garden, and everlasting. Be sure to visit our prayer space when you are in the building. As part of the closing prayer service, each member of the class of 2017 wrote a letter to herself as she responded to reflection questions about her own hopes and dreams for her years at Rosary and how she experiences God in her life. Today’s freshman, like every Rosary girl, will find her freshman retreat letter in the envelope that holds her diploma in May of 2017.

It’s a tradition! On September 26, seniors set aside the morning to celebrate the start of their graduation year. Building on the theme I’ll Be There for You, Senior Retreat Team led their classmates through a review of the years they have already spent at Rosary. Celebrating a new tradition, each small group constructed a fleece picnic blanket to mark the brand new senior privilege to eat lunch in the courtyard on sunny days, The morning had everything you need for a great celebration: we ate, we talked, we shared, we prayed, we sang. Campus Ministry Rosary Day

Prayer Space Holy Water Fountain

We prayed the prayer that names our school as we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on Monday, October 7. The rosary is a gift to us from St. Dominic, who received it from the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a contemplative prayer: a gentle prayer that points us in the direction of taking time to reflect ... to be still ... to consider who we are and whose we are ... to think about our life’s journey.

Did you know that the fountain in Rosary’s foyer prayer space is filled with Holy Water from our students’ parishes? The fountain is empty over the summer and is refilled each Fall. Representatives from each of the 65+ parishes attended by our students bring in Holy Water from their parish and add it to the fountain after the Back to School Mass.

Our shared prayer led us right into another community event: a picnic! The courtyard, foyer, and cafeteria provided picnic spots as all enjoyed the chance for hot dogs and a change-of-pace lunchtime. The lunchtime stars were Parent Auxiliary volunteers who prepared and served our delightful picnic lunch.

Junior Ring Blessing Members of the Class of 2015 received their class rings during a special ceremony October 29. Deacon Paul Iwanski blessed the rings and blessed the class members, then the students received their rings and a flower from their homeroom teacher. (Rosary students have the same homeroom teacher all four years.) Rosary faculty and staff were encouraged to wear their own class rings that day, including Principal Sister Ann Brummel, OP, a Rosary graduate.

Athletics Fall Sports Summary Swimming & Diving

Volleyball

With a year of high school swimming under their caps, the Rosary BEADS swim team has taken their task of rebuilding to heart. The 2013 BEADS are still very young (graduating just one senior), but also a year wiser, taking 1st place in the Rosary & Sandburg Invitationals, while placing 2nd overall in the Lyons, Naperville North, and Deerfield Invites.

The team has really started to gel the more they played together posting a solid showing of 1st place-Bronze Div. at the Plainfield Tourney and 13th at the very competitive 2013 Mizuno Cup. The Royals entered post season play making it to the semi-final round of Regional play.

The Beads splashed into the post season, taking 4th in their extremely tough Metro Catholic Aquatic Conference, (all 4 teams finished in top ten at state). Our Beads quickly following that up with a 2nd place finish in the Neuqua Valley Sectional, qualifying 8 swimmers on to the IHSA State Meet, in 13 individual events and 2 relays events. Just one week later, the Beads swam to a top-10 finish, placing 9th , (65 points), at the IHSA State Swimming & Diving Championships at New Trier High School..

This is the first time in over a decade that Royals sophomore volleyball has beaten St. Francis is conference play. Our freshman volleyball team has much to brag about as well, as they have a very respectable 17-15-1 record, bringing home a 2nd place trophy at the Glenbard East Invitational.

Rosary Athletics is very proud of our history-making accomplishments this Fall, where 4 of our 5 Fall sports qualified and were well-represented at State competitions. 2013 Rosary Fall sports has set the bar, posting yet another successful season in our record books.

Fine Arts Fine Arts Boosters Hosts Movie Bingo: Good, Bad or Condemned?

Fine Arts Boosters hosted an interactive show in August called Movie Bingo: Good, Bad, or Condemned?! Those in attendance played along with Mrs. Mary O’Brien (Vicki Quade, created of Late Night Catechism and Put the Nuns in Charge) as she called Bingo and reviewed the latest movies, all at the same time! Using her love of movies and bingo, and a lot of Catholic humor, Mrs. O’Brien engaged the audience in actual games of bingo built around some of her favorite movies! She also told us

if she considered today’s movies good, bad, or condemned! Proceeds from the show benefit Rosary Fine Arts programs and improvements to the auditorium and backstage areas. In attendance were Rosary alumnae Sarah Hoying, Beth Hammer, and Marnie Noel (above) who also reminisced about their experiences in Rosary musicals and fine arts programs.

Rosary Choirs Attend Vocal Clinic at North Central College The Rosary Choirs attended a clinic in November with Dr. Ramona Wis at North Central College. The choirs had a chance to perform and workshop several Christmas pieces with Dr. Wis. She shared wonderful techniques—the students enjoyed working with her. The afternoon ended with all of the Rosary choirs and the North Central College Women’s Chorale performing Gwyneth Walker’s powerful “How Can I Keep from Singing.” Dr. Wis directs the Women’s Chorale, Concert Choir, and Chamber Singers. She is also the chair of the music department and co-coordinator of Music Education. Dr. Wis is an active clinician, festival conductor, presenter, writer, and public speaker The clinic was an excellent learning experience and the students loved performing in the state-of-the-art Wentz Concert Hall!

Candlelight Ball Help Rosary Cruise into the Future at the 2014 Candlelight Ball The Rosary High School Candlelight Ball is quickly approaching. This year’s dinner dance and auction will be held in the ballroom at the Marriott Hotel in Naperville on February 22, 2014. The event begins with a cocktail hour from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a sit-down dinner and dancing. The highlight of the evening will be our silent and live auctions, all designed to help us raise funds to further the mission of the Dominican Sisters here at Rosary.

outbid on and what items have no bid on them at all. You can learn more about Bidpal from our website. Just click on “Learn to Bidpal” at the bottom of the home page. Professional charity auctioneer Jim Miller will lead the live auction again that night. Jim’s personality and sense of humor kept everyone engaged and laughing throughout the live auction. And to finish the night off, we’ll dance to the sounds of Chef Dan and the Appetizers. This talented group of musicians returns to the Candlelight Ball for a third year. All of the musicians are affiliated with McDonald’s Corporation in some way and only play for charitable events. Kelly and Emma Knauf ’s dad, Jim, plays in the band. Last year, everyone was talking about their music for days afterwards!

We’ve begun the fun already, with auction items running on our website at www.bidpal. net/rhscb. You’ll find all of the information about the event there, too. And, of course, you can purchase your tickets. We’re raffling off an iPad Air. Raffle tickets are $25 each or 3 for $50. Please help us reach our goal of having every family purchase at least one raffle ticket. And speaking of raffles, we’re adding a new one to the evening itself. Our “Best of Live” raffle will run the night of the event; we’ll sell no more than 100 tickets at a price of $100 each. The winner will be drawn just before the Live Auction and will get to choose one of the Live Auction Items as the prize! You could win a vacation for (4), for instance, for only $100!!!! The evening itself will be chocked full of fun. As you arrive, you’ll register your smart phone as a bidding device for placing your silent auction bids throughout the night. Bidding is simple and will allow you to make a single pass around the room to see what is available for auction. After that, keep placing your bids electronically while you visit with friends. Bidpal will let you know what items you are winning, which ones you’ve been

well.

Finally, we are looking for individuals and businesses that would like to donate to our event. Sponsors help us underwrite the cost of putting on the dinner; item donors provide goods and services for us to offer at auction. We have advertising spots available on our website and in our auction book to help promote your business as

If you have questions about the Candlelight Ball, you can contact us via email at candlelightball@rosaryhs.com or call Linda Fritz at (630) 208-8094. Most importantly, buy your tickets now! The early bird price of $75 each expires on December 31, 2013. Tickets are $100 after that. They are selling fast…See you at the Ball!
