“A Heart So Rare” Tops National Folk Charts for Madison Resident

Madison-based singer-songwriter Dave Murphy is no stranger to success—but his latest release, A Heart So Rare, may be his most celebrated yet. The album, a reflective and emotionally resonant collection exploring themes of loss and healing, hit No. 1 on Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Alternative Folk and Folk Album Charts for the week of May 10, 2025.

With more than 30 years of songwriting behind him, Murphy has had previous

Falbums chart and earn national airplay. But A Heart So Rare is his first to reach the top spot. The album has received strong critical acclaim and continues to gain traction on streaming, independent, college, and public radio stations across the country.

Murphy, who writes all of his own lyrics and music, performs throughout the New York and New Jersey area. To hear more or check for upcoming shows, visit davemurphy.net.

Springfield Avenue Murals Bring Color and Community to Maplewood

ive new murals have transformed utility boxes along Springfield Avenue in Maplewood, turning everyday infrastructure into vibrant works of public art. The project, spearheaded by Springfield Avenue Maplewood (SAM) and supported by Maplewood Township, was designed to bring creativity and beauty to the community while celebrating local talent.

The selected artists—Emily Konopinski, Magie McGowan with Brian McGowan, Mary Arevalo, Natalie Crandall, and Sumana Ghosh-Witherspoon—each brought a unique vision to their box while incorporating the signature colors of the SAM logo to ensure cohesion across the installations.

Funded entirely through SAM’s community events—including its popular fall Craft Beer Tasting and spring Wine Tasting fundraisers—the initiative originally aimed to fund four murals. Thanks to the overwhelming success of the 2024 campaign, two additional murals were commissioned.

Installed throughout April and May, the murals were completed just in time for the neighborhood’s beloved MayFest celebration.

Summit Community Shares Gratitude

for

Heroes During Military Appreciation Month

In celebration of Military Appreciation Month, the Fortnightly Club of Summit launched a heartwarming, communitywide letter-writing initiative throughout May to honor our nation’s military and first responders. Residents of all ages were invited to write thank-you letters or color pictures, which were then collected and sent to Operation Gratitude to be included in care packages for deployed troops, veterans, new recruits, wounded heroes, and first responders.

The campaign brought together neighbors, students, families, and local businesses, all united by a shared mission: to express heartfelt appreciation to those who serve and protect. With a goal of gathering 500 notes from the Summit community, the Fortnightly Club saw a steady stream of submissions throughout the month.

Blank coloring sheets and drop-off points were available at participating local businesses, helping make this effort accessible to everyone. Through this meaningful project, Summit proudly stood behind its heroes—one letter at a time.

Rescuing Food, Empowering Communities

Table to Table, New Jersey’s first and largest food rescue non-profit, and ArcMorris, a non-profit that uplifts and empowers individuals with disabilities, are partnering in volunteerism. Through this collaboration, individuals with disabilities use the award-winning Table to Table I-Rescue App to pick up fresh, surplus food that would otherwise be wasted and deliver it to local community partners supporting people facing food insecurity.

“People with disabilities have so much to contribute to our communities. Volunteering with organizations like Table to Table is only one way we are proving that each day,” said Sal Moran, Executive Director, ArcMorris.

In just a few short months, ArcMorris clients have rescued more than 2,600 pounds of nutritious food from local businesses such as ShopRite (Chester), Whole Foods (Morristown), and Wawa (Parsippany) and delivered it to nearby food pantries, churches, and community centers—benefiting hundreds of neighbors in need.

Changing the System, Centering Youth

This Advocate is Designing a New Future Alongside New Jersey’s Youth

EEmilie Stewart, who grew up in North Caldwell, is more than a policy advocate—she’s a catalyst for change, driven by a belief that every young person deserves a future shaped by opportunity, not circumstance. As Manager of Policy Advocacy for the Newark Opportunity Youth Network (NOYN), Emilie has turned conviction into action, leading statewide efforts that amplify youth voices and reshape public policy.

Her journey wasn’t linear—and that’s what makes it powerful. Emilie entered college pre-med, but an unexpected volunteer experience at a youth detention center changed everything. She began working with incarcerated teens and quickly saw how deeply systems like education, justice, and foster care failed to support them. “I realized that many young people are navigating systems that weren’t built for their success,” she says.

Determined to confront these injustices, Emilie shifted course. After earning her degree in human development and policy analysis at Cornell, she joined Teach for America, teaching high school English in Baltimore. There, she witnessed students grappling with mental health challenges, a lack of access to resources, and systemic bias—yet still showing up, still hoping. “My classroom became my first site of advocacy,” she says. “But I knew I needed to do more.”

She returned to school to earn a master’s in macro social work and went on to serve as a policy advisor to the governor

of Rhode Island, working to protect the rights of youth in foster care. But her heart remained with New Jersey. When an opportunity arose to join NOYN, she seized it—bringing with her a bold vision: policy driven by the people it affects most.

Emilie now trains young people ages 16 to 21 in advocacy skills—from visioning sessions and power mapping to legislative testimony and coalition-building. She doesn’t just speak for youth—she helps them speak for themselves. In 2024, her work helped pass two landmark bills in New Jersey: the Youth Disconnection

Prevention Act and the New Jersey YouthBuild Act, both informed directly by youth testimony and grassroots organizing.

Even now, her work doesn’t stop at policy wins. “Passing a bill is just the beginning,” Emilie says. “We fight just as hard to make sure it’s implemented the right way.”

In a field where process can eclipse people, Emilie Stewart brings humanity back into focus. She’s not just advocating for youth—she’s walking beside them, showing what’s possible when empathy, persistence, and purpose collide.

Emilie Stewart talks about advocacy to students in the Social Justice Concentration at Mount St. Dominic Academy. She is a also 2010 graduate of MSDA.

Never Quit On e-Armed Golfer Jimmy Nolan Inspires Through Grit, Giving, and Golf

WWhen Jimmy Nolan of Verona lost his right arm to osteosarcoma (bone cancer), he didn’t give up on sports—he simply adapted. Diagnosed with a benign tumor at 13, low-grade cancer at 15, and finally high-grade cancer by age 16, all in his shoulder, he underwent multiple surgeries before doctors ultimately amputated his arm in August 1999 to save his life. Just a year later, he won county and state tennis titles as a lefty. Today, Jimmy is using golf to build something even greater: a movement that proves life without a limb is truly limitless.

Quitting was never part of his mindset. After tennis came golf, which he picked up in his 20s and has since turned into both a passion and a platform for purpose.

Now 42, Jimmy is a husband, father of two boys, and a full-time police dispatcher in Riverdale, the town where he grew up. Off the clock, he tirelessly advocates for and raises funds to support adaptive athletes through the North American One-Armed Golfer Association (NAOAGA).

NAOAGA hosts clinics and tournaments across the country for golfers with upperbody disabilities, from amputees to stroke survivors to individuals with cerebral palsy. Jimmy first attended a tournament in 2020 and immediately felt at home.

“These men and women bring such inspiration, pride, kindness, and great energy to the sport,” he says. “I’ve found lifelong friends, and I love giving back— especially to help junior one-armed golfers feel like they belong.”

To help others participate, Jimmy fundraises year-round—covering travel, lodging, and tournament fees for fellow players who might not otherwise afford to compete. In the past five years, he’s raised over $10,000 through fundraising events and a giving page.

“A lot of people don’t know how to ask for help or just don’t have a network,” Jimmy says. “I’m happy to step up for them.”

Jimmy and over 300 golfers nationwide participate in NAOAGA’s tournaments. The upcoming 25th anniversary championship will be held this June in Indiana, drawing 60 adaptive players from across the country.

While Jimmy admits he’s not the best golfer on the course, that humility is part of what makes him so admired. In truth, he’s a skilled competitor—an all-around athlete whose one-armed swing impresses even seasoned players. But his role goes far beyond his swing. “I’m the guy who makes sure you want to come back,” he says. “I reach out to people, pump up the energy, and help everyone feel like they belong.”

It’s more than a game. It’s therapy, camaraderie, and community. Jimmy describes NAOAGA as a lifeline—a place where people with vastly different stories find shared purpose through perseverance.

As a father, Jimmy hopes his sons see his journey not as one of loss, but of resilience.

“I just want them to grow up knowing they can do anything. Because if their onearmed dad can, they sure can too.”

Elements to Improve Your Landscape

AA beautiful landscape combines function, style, and ease of maintenance. With the right materials you can create a yard that looks great year-round with minimal upkeep.

Mulch is essential for healthy garden beds. It retains moisture, prevents weeds, and adds a clean, finished look. Apply a 2–3 inch layer around plants and refresh it annually to keep beds tidy and nourished.

Flagstone steppers create natural, attractive walkways through grass or gardens. These flat stones guide foot traffic, protect your lawn, and blend beautifully into any outdoor design.

Landscape rocks add texture and contrast. Use larger stones as focal points or borders, and smaller gravel or pebbles as low-maintenance ground cover. They’re ideal for dry areas and reduce the need for watering and weeding.

Concrete pavers are great for patios, paths, or driveways. They offer clean lines, durability, and easy customization. Available in various shapes and colors, pavers enhance both form and function in your landscape.

Edging ties everything together. Whether you choose metal, stone, or plastic, edging defines spaces and keeps mulch, rocks, or grass in their place. It gives your yard a neat, professional finish.

By combining these elements, you create a cohesive, eyecatching outdoor space that’s easy to maintain. The key to a lasting, beautiful landscape isn’t just the plants—it’s the structure that supports them.

AREA RUGS

RRugs can help delineate different areas within an open floor plan by defining spaces, such as separating a living room from a dining area or creating a cozy reading nook. They can also add warmth by providing insulation, making a space feel warmer and more inviting, especially in homes with hard flooring like tile or hardwood. Rugs can also absorb sound, reducing echoes and noise levels in a room, which is particularly beneficial in larger spaces.

A well-chosen area rug can serve as a focal point, adding color, texture, and pattern to a room and complementing existing furniture and decor. It can also help protect your flooring from scratches and wear, particularly in hightraffic areas or under furniture. Rugs add a soft surface underfoot, making areas more comfortable, especially in high-traffic zones or play areas for children.

Creating a cozy atmosphere with layers of textures, including area rugs, can make a space feel more intimate and inviting.  They can also hide imperfections by cleverly covering up flaws in flooring or helping to conceal stains.

Different rugs in various colors and styles can visually divide areas while vibrancy to the decor. Rugs can be swapped out with the seasons to refresh a space and match the seasonal decor, allowing for easy transformation without significant changes.

When Designing a Financial Plan, Let a Professional Guide You Comprehensive Services for Every Lifestyle and Goal

(continued from the previous page)

“We’re acting as a quarterback to coordinate all aspects of financial planning for our clients at different life stages.

Every client has a different set of needs and goals. We listen to what the client is asking for and then create a plan to solve a problem or issue.

Sarah A. Melzer, CFP®
Patrick J. McCahill, Jr., CFP®

The team of advisors consists of John M. Egan, CFP®, Patrick J. McCahill, Jr., CFP®, and Sarah A. Melzer, CFP®. Patrick is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and Senior Wealth Advisor who works and resides in the community. He says, “Our client base is local, I live in Chatham with my wife and three children, and I want to have deep, meaningful relationships with our clients.” Building trust and relationships is a key piece of financial planning, and the advisors meet with their clients three to four times a year in person.

Working with a CFP®, he explains, is having someone who acts as a fiduciary and takes a comprehensive approach to your overall financial planning. “Being a CFP® means we’re acting as a quarterback to coordinate all aspects of financial planning for our clients at different life stages. We’ll incorporate insurance, when appropriate, whether it’s life insurance for a young family or longterm care for our pre-retirees.”

Estate planning, he says, is especially critical because that’s how clients leave their assets to beneficiaries for generational or legacy planning. “We’re not just handling investments. We’re pulling in tax planning and preparation and we’re analyzing accounts and issues that could happen at any time during the planning relationship.”

Communication and high-touch service are pillars of the practice’s foundation. In addition to frequent in-person meetings, the advisors make outbound calls, do check-ins, and perform weekly market commentary.

Many of their clients have been with the practice for a long time, and new clients often come through referrals. “Referrals mean that we’re doing our job well and clients appreciate our value,” says Patrick. “We now have two and three generations of families that we’re serving, and they trust us to pass on that relationship.”

Being a fiduciary, meaning it’s feebased instead of commission-based, partnering with Egan Wealth Advisors is advantageous for clients. “We’re on the same side of the table as the client and doing what’s the best fit for each one,” he says. “Being a fiduciary means we can take a step back, look at the full picture and see what’s appropriate for the client.”

In addition to building relationships, Patrick enjoys how each day is different. “There are no cookie-cutter models, solutions, or portfolios here. Every client has a different set of needs and goals. We listen to what the client is asking for and then create a plan to solve a problem or issue.”

He’s also glad to be working as a team. “With the others, I have the ability to share practices and ideas that best fit. John’s been in the business for 40 years, and Sarah has been a member of the team since 2023. We believe that by having a

team of CFP®s, we can analyze a client and see which one of us would be the best fit.”

Adds Patrick, “As fiduciary advisors, we add value, and Egan Wealth Advisors provides clients with white glove service.”

Protecting What Matters

RFK Insurance Agency Since 1922

IInsurance agency Rand, Feuer & Klein (RFK) has been helping people and businesses attain the proper insurance since 1922, over four generations. Led by Joey and Dennis Klein, clients can be assured they will get the best possible personalized service.

The firm knows that a one-size-fits-all does not apply to insurance, so every client gets their undivided attention with a proactive approach. The firm’s only goal is to keep clients and their loved ones protected with the policies they need.

RFK has two office locations: one in Fairfield, NJ, and another in Absecon, NJ. It is operated under the name Shore Agency, making it easier for clients to access our personalized services.

RFK offers personal insurance, including auto, boating, motorcycle, RV, classic car, home, renters, and umbrella insurance, as well as commercial insurance, such as auto dealership, business liability, commercial property, contractors, cyber liability, E&O, farm and ranch, group health, landlord liability, liquor liability, restaurant, and workers’ compensation.

“There is no bad time to get insurance. Everyone needs it. The best time to talk to a professional is when you see a price increase because it is always good to get a second opinion,” states Joey.

Educated, Experienced and Empathetic

A Lawyer Who Practices with Compassion

GGrowing up, Christine Socha Czapek always knew she would one day be an attorney. Today, she’s an equity partner at Borteck & Czapek, P.C., a “boutique” law firm specializing in planning, administration, and litigation of estates and trusts.

“One of the ways we are unique is that we do both planning/ administration and litigation,” she says. “Most attorneys specialize in one or the other.”

Christine finds many aspects of her career rewarding.

“Whether it's assisting someone putting together an estate plan so they feel secure, or advocating for a person who has been harmed, knowing that I’m making a difference in someone’s life fills me with pride and fuels me for the tasks ahead,” she says.

Her clients appreciate her warm and friendly personality.

“I think my genuine desire to help comes through right away, which makes people feel like they’re being ‘taken care of.’”

In the field of estates and trusts, she often meets clients at very vulnerable times in their lives—they may have lost a loved one and are dealing with the aftermath, or they may have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and need to plan.

“That requires compassion and consideration—two qualities I believe I possess in abundance. However, even in a more positive setting, clients like to know their attorney is educated, experienced, and willing to work hard. I know I am all three of those things, so I try to make sure I show it.”

When all else fails, Christine uses her wonderful sense of humor to break the tension. “I also share stories from my personal life to ensure clients know I can relate to their experience,” she says.

Misidentified Ivy

English Ivy Incorrectly Labeled as Poison Ivy

In the May issue of Vicinity Magazine, an image was incorrectly labeled as Poison Ivy. The image that was printed is actually English Ivy. This correction aims to clarify the visual differences to avoid confusion.

Poison Ivy is well-known for its three-leaf clusters, which are a primary visual indicator. The leaves are typically almond-shaped with pointed tips, and they can appear glossy or matte depending on the season. The edges may be smooth or slightly toothed, but they are always arranged in groups of three—a trait summed up by the familiar warning: “Leaves of three, let it be.”

Poison Ivy changes its appearance throughout the seasons: Spring—Leaves are reddish and shiny; Summer—Leaves are green and may appear waxy; Fall—Leaves turn vibrant shades of red, yellow, or orange. Additionally, Poison Ivy sometimes grows small, white or cream-colored berries, and its vines are often hairy—a distinguishing feature that is key for identification.

We apologize for the confusion caused by the incorrect image labeling. Proper identification of Poison Ivy is crucial for safety, as contact with its oil—urushiol— can cause severe allergic reactions.

Moving forward, we will ensure more stringent verification of plant images to prevent such errors.

Save a Life from Stroke

SStrokes can happen to anyone, at any age – even young people. Despite being one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in the United States, strokes are largely preventable, treatable and beatable – if you can control your risk factors.

According to the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke. Keeping blood pressure in check, living a healthy lifestyle and knowing stroke warning signs may help protect you and your loved ones.

Here are key insights from the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally supported by the HCA Healthcare Foundation.

Controlling Risk Factors

Up to 80% of strokes may be preventable, according to the American Stroke Association. You can take action to prevent strokes by managing your risk factors, like high blood pressure, a leading cause and controllable risk factor for stroke and heart disease.

Other risk factors include diabetes and obesity, which can be kept in check with healthy lifestyle behaviors such as good nutrition. Quitting smoking and being physically active are important. Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, which is a quivering or irregular heartbeat, also increases stroke risk. In fact, people with AFib are five times more likely to have a stroke, according to the American Heart Association.

F.A.S.T.

Face Drooping | Arm Weakness | Speech | Time to Call 911

Most adults in the U.S. don’t know the stroke warning signs, nor that stroke is largely treatable if you call 911 as soon as you recognize the symptoms.

Learning the acronym F.A.S.T. can help you recognize that someone may be having stroke symptoms so you can take life-saving action.

F: Face Drooping. Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?

A: Arm Weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S: Speech. Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.”

T: Time to Call 911. If you or anyone else shows any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately.

Preventing a Second Stroke

Nearly 1 in 4 strokes occur in people who had a previous stroke, sometimes because they don’t know what caused the first, making identifying the cause of the stroke a key step toward future prevention. Treatment depends on the type of stroke someone is having, which can be determined with a series of medical evaluations and tests.

Work with your health care professional to develop a plan that helps you move forward after a first stroke while preventing a second. This plan should include controlling risk factors, like achieving and maintaining healthy blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

“Preventing a second stroke is possible with the right approach,” said Teresita Casanova, MD, HCA Healthcare affiliated neurologist and American Stroke Association volunteer expert. “Taking medicines as prescribed, monitoring health numbers, and making small, consistent lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Stroke survivors should feel empowered to take control of their health and work with their care team to build a strong prevention plan.”

To help you in your journey, you can rely on tools such as the Heart & Stroke Helper, a free self-management app available for stroke survivors and their caregivers. The app allows patients to oversee their health in one place with features that track progress on lifestyle habits, manage medications, track health numbers, provide information about stroke and allow patients to connect with others for inspiration.

D&G Dental of West Orange Doubles Treatment Space to Meet High Demand

SSince opening in 2012, D&G Dental of West Orange has become a trusted destination for comprehensive dental care, known for its excellence in cosmetic and implant dentistry. Due to consistently high demand and a growing patient base, D&G is announcing a major expansion— doubling the number of treatment rooms and taking over the entire second floor of their current building.

“Our reputation for delivering highquality, personalized dental care has fueled this growth,” say Dr. Med Dawoud, owner and founder of D&G Dental. “The newly expanded office allows us to better serve our patients by increasing access and offering an even wider range of procedures under one roof. We are proud to have a talented team of multiple dentists, each with their own niche from cosmetic enhancements to advanced surgical treatments.”

The new facility is equipped to provide everything from routine cleanings and professional whitening to high-end cosmetic makeovers and complex surgical procedures, including dental implants. A key feature of the expansion is the addition of an in-house dental laboratory. This gives Dr. Dawoud and the clinical team complete control over the design and fabrication of restorations, ensuring more precise results and faster turnaround times. “Unlike outside labs that have never seen the patient, our on-site lab team works hand-in-hand with our doctors to craft personalized smiles that exceed expectations,” he says.

Additionally, the office now includes a state-of-the-art surgical suite, outfitted with the latest dental technology to support safe, efficient, and comfortable procedures. “With this level of control and innovation, we can maintain the highest standards of care from start to finish,” he says.

Dr.

John Paul Tutela Expands His Vision for Patient-Centered Aesthetic Care

TTutela Plastic Surgery has embarked on an exciting new chapter with the official opening of a brand-new, state-of-theart office in East Hanover. Known for his artistry, precision, and deeply personal approach to care, John Paul Tutela, MD, has built a destination where surgical excellence meets modern aesthetic innovation.

Offering both aesthetic and reconstructive solutions, the practice provides a full spectrum of surgical care—from breast and body contouring to advanced cosmetic procedures for both women and men. A signature offering includes the Mommy Makeover: a customized combination of breast lifts, implants, liposuction, and tummy tucks designed to help mothers feel like themselves again. “It’s incredibly meaningful to help women prioritize their needs—often for the first time in years,” says Dr. Tutela.

To support a wider range of services, the office includes a fully equipped procedure suite for minimally invasive in-office treatments performed under local anesthesia. The addition of a full-service medi-spa expands the patient experience even further. Non-surgical options include Botox, Dysport, Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra, and Radiesse, along with RF microneedling with PRP, dermaplaning, chemical peels, and laser skin rejuvenation

for fine lines, discoloration, and overall skin tone. Other wellness offerings include medical weight loss injections, IV hydration, and hormone replacement therapy for both men and women, as well as NeoGraft hair restoration.

Every patient begins their journey with a complimentary photo facial analysis and leaves with a customized plan for treatment and skincare—supported by medical-grade products available in-office.

What truly distinguishes Dr. Tutela is more than his surgical expertise—it’s his belief in real, immediate impact. “Surgery lets you fix a problem directly. You see the results, and so does the patient. That’s powerful,” he says. Inspired by his father, also a plastic surgeon, Dr. Tutela brings heart, skill, and vision to every patient journey. Whether he’s restoring confidence after cancer or helping patients rediscover their reflection, his mission remains the same: to deliver compassionate, comprehensive care that helps people love how they look—and feel—from the inside out.

For Sleep Apnea, Help Can Be Found in the Dentist’s Office

MMany people unaware that help for their chronic snoring and/or sleep apnea can be found in their dentist’s office, although specific dental appliances have been around for years, according to Dr. Amy Tran of The Silverstrom Group in Livingston.

Clients also may not realize that a dentist can observe signs of sleep apnea during a routine exam. “We look for things like airway obstruction, enlarged tonsils, or a long soft palate,” says Dr. Tran, a diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. “We don’t make a formal diagnosis but refer them to a physician, who can then refer them back to us for a custom dental appliance that can help them get a good night’s sleep by correcting the problem.”

For someone with mild-to-moderate sleep apnea, a custom dental appliance can improve airway breathing, holding the lower jaw and tongue forward, thus allowing air to flow naturally on its own during sleep.

Over the course of a single night, a person with severe obstructive sleep apnea may stop breathing upwards of 240 times in 8 hours,” Dr. Tran points out. “Not only can this disrupt sleep, but it can lead to and exacerbate more serious health issues. Eventually, if left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to cardiovascular problems, diabetes, headaches, Alzheimer’s, chronic fatigue, mood disorders, and many other comorbidities.”

Many people with sleep apnea own a CPAP machine, but not every person can tolerate it well and may lead to patient non-compliance. “The machines, with its mask and hose attachments, can be difficult to adjust, irritating, and inconvenient to use during travel,” she says. “For someone with mild-to-moderate sleep apnea, a custom dental appliance can improve airway breathing, holding the lower jaw and tongue forward, thus

allowing air to flow naturally on its own during sleep. “It’s more convenient and comfortable than a CPAP and therefore, patients are more apt to comply.”

Transform Your Health With Expert-Guided Weight Loss

FFor many struggling to lose weight and keep it off, real success starts with the right medical guidance—and a program built to last. At Endocrine Consultants of Morris County (ECMC), board-certified endocrinologists Dr. Sheera Siegel and Dr. Anna Kissin bring decades of experience treating endocrine disorders—including diabetes, thyroid disease, and osteoporosis—to their innovative weight loss program, Metabolic Lifestyle Solutions.

Originally prescribing GLP-1 medications to treat diabetes, the doctors became early adopters and developed a deep understanding of how these medications work. “We’ve been using these medications for many years with our diabetic patients,” says Dr. Siegel. “We know the ins and outs—what to expect, how to manage side effects, and how to use them effectively in a real-world setting.”

But their approach goes far beyond medication. Their comprehensive program includes lifestyle support from a registered dietitian and a personal trainer—available in person or virtually—who help patients make sustainable changes in nutrition and exercise. “Our goal is not just to help patients lose weight but to give them the tools to keep it off if they choose to taper down or stop taking the medication altogether,” explains Dr. Kissin. “It’s very rewarding to see our patients succeed and feel good in their bodies.”

Now in its second year, the program has helped many patients reach their goals and maintain their progress. “We feel proud of the work we’re doing—it’s thoughtful and evidence-based, and patients are happy with the results,” adds Dr. Siegel.

In addition to their metabolic program, ECMC continues to welcome new patients for a wide range of endocrine conditions, including diabetes, PCOS, menopause, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, as well as adrenal and pituitary problems. Visit ecmcendo.com for more information.

Dr. Kathryn Eckert Guides Patients Through Treatments

A Doctor Who Combines Best Practices with Personalized Care

DDr. Kathryn Eckert grew up watching her mother work in healthcare, inspiring her to become a doctor. While attending medical school and progressing through her career, she became very interested in public health and women’s health, and also found she had a passion for surgery.

She combined those interests and today feels fortunate to be able to provide women with meaningful ways to deal with breast issues and breast health, which are her focus. “A big part of what I treat is breast cancer, and my personal goal is to try to be the best guide for patients as they’re going through treatment.”

Dr. Eckert wants to help patients realize that this diagnosis is hopefully just a speed bump and not a roadblock, while also ensuring that they are receiving the best treatment to be able to go on with their lives. “Women are often the cornerstone of families and are used to caring for other people,” she says. “And so, to flip that script and be the patient is really difficult for them.”

A New Jersey native who trained at the prestigious Mayo Clinic, she was happy to return home and join the RWJBarnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center, Center for Breast Health and Disease Prevention. “I’ve been so impressed with the forward thinking and initiative that this system has taken to be on the forefront of providing good quality care to people close to home,” says Dr. Eckert. “There are so many wonderful clinical trials available to patients, and as a system with an academic focus, it enriches the quality of care that we can provide to our patients.”

Pilates Studios That Feel Like Home Strength, Connection, and Core Values in Motion

FFor Caroline Collins, fitness isn’t just a career—it’s a calling. A former Division 1 lacrosse player with a successful Wall Street background, Collins began practicing Pilates in 2002 and returned to her lifelong passion for movement and wellness in 2008, earning her comprehensive Pilates certification. After teaching privately for several years, she made a big leap in 2016, signing on to open three Club Pilates studios—beginning in her hometown of Short Hills, followed by locations in Madison and Basking Ridge.

What sets her studios apart isn’t just the sleek spaces or premium equipment—it’s the sense of community. “Many of our instructors rotate among our three locations, and clients love that continuity,” says Collins. “We’ve created a supportive, welcoming environment where everyone feels seen.” Members with unlimited memberships can attend classes at all three studios and often follow their favorite instructors, enjoying flexibility without losing the familiarity that keeps them motivated. Collins’ three studios are also unique to most in the area in that they are not only owned and operated by an experienced instructor, but all three of her general managers are certified instructors as well—and share Collins’ passion for bringing Pilates to their communities.

Pilates, a low-impact form of exercise that emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and mind-body connection, is the foundation of Caroline’s wellness philosophy: strong is beautiful. It’s ideal for all ages and abilities—from athletes to those recovering from injury—and offers both physical and mental benefits.

“This area shaped who I am. Being able to give back through health and wellness and transform lives has been incredibly rewarding,” Collins says. Her studios don’t just build stronger bodies—they build stronger communities.

The Power of the Essentials

TToo often, we move through life on autopilot, forgetting how remarkable the simple act of living truly is. In a previous column, I shared insights from Morty Davis, author of, Happiness Guaranteed or Your Misery Back. At 96 years old, Morty radiates more vitality and optimism than many people a third of his age. His secret? A relentless focus on gratitude and positivity.

1Meditation

Morty reminds us that just waking up in the morning is a gift—not everyone gets that chance. The ability to see, move, think clearly, and live without pain are miracles we frequently overlook.

His philosophy is simple: Grateful people live better lives.

In a world of constant noise and distraction, stillness is revolutionary. Take 10 minutes a day to sit or stand quietly with no agenda. This brief pause is more than a reset—it’s a return to clarity. When the mind settles, inspiration has space to rise.

2Breathing

We breathe without thinking, yet breath is life’s rhythm. Controlled breathing can lower anxiety, boost oxygen flow, and regulate your heartbeat. Try this simple technique: inhale through your nose for four seconds, hold for four, then exhale slowly through your mouth for four. It’s like hitting the reset button for your nervous system.

3Exercise

Movement is medicine. I design my home so I’m constantly encouraged to move—pull-up bars, free weights, even martial arts gear scattered in different rooms. Whether it’s a structured gym routine or a creative home workout, find what energizes you. Just 30 minutes a day can transform your health and your mood.

Of course, we all wrestle with everyday problems. But when health slips away, suddenly we’re left with just one real concern. Illness overshadows everything. That’s why taking daily steps to preserve and enhance our well-being is not optional—it’s essential.

Here are five powerful practices that can help fortify your mind, body, and spirit:

4Nutrition

Food is fuel, and quality matters. I follow a disciplined, plant-based diet that works for me— but the key is to find what nourishes you. Emphasize fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes. Avoid processed junk, excess sugar, and fried foods. Your body will thank you.

5

It took me years to learn that living authentically is the gateway to peace. When you stop worrying about what others think and align your actions with your values, life gets lighter. As I often say: “Those who desire nothing possess everything.” Let people see the real you. Honest relationships and a strong sense of self are pillars of true well-being.

These practices are not complex, but their impact is profound. Incorporate them into your daily routine and watch your life elevate. Because when we protect and nurture our health, everything else becomes possible.
