Chatham Teen Helps Make Birthdays Feel Special for Children in Need
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
FFor most children, birthdays are filled with cake, candles, gifts, and celebration. But for some families struggling financially, those simple traditions can feel out of reach. Chatham resident Olivia Matter is working to change that, one birthday box at a time.
A senior at Chatham High School heading to Lehigh University this fall, Matter helps run Brightening Birthdays, a volunteer initiative that creates birthday bundles for children in underserved communities.
Each month, Matter and her sisters assemble about 50 birthday boxes filled with a cake, icing, candles, decorations, and a small gift. The boxes, which run around $30 each to make, are distributed through two Paterson nursery schools, a Paterson teen center, Toni’s Kitchen, and Nourish NJ, helping children celebrate birthdays that might otherwise pass quietly.
The idea began several years ago after Matter’s older sister, Leigha, volunteered in Philadelphia and met a young girl who shared that she did not receive birthday presents. Wanting every child to experience the joy of feeling celebrated, the sisters created Brightening Birthdays together. Over time, the project became a family effort and was eventually passed down to Olivia, who now coordinates deliveries, fundraising, and communication with partner organizations.
Every month, Matter contacts the schools and centers to learn how many children are celebrating birthdays. The boxes are then prepared and delivered directly to the organizations, allowing families to celebrate privately in whatever way feels most comfortable to them.
While fundraising remains an ongoing challenge, Matter continues to keep the program running through local drives, donations, and community support. Seeing photos of smiling children and hearing how much the boxes mean to families reminds her why the effort matters.
As she prepares to leave for college, Matter is already training her younger sister, Riley, to continue the tradition, ensuring more children will continue to feel remembered, celebrated, and special on their birthdays.

Building a Lasting Legacy of Giving in Maplewood and South Orange
WWhen longtime Maplewood resident Rosemary Ostmann was asked to help launch the Maplewood Foundation in 2022, she immediately recognized the potential for something far bigger than a traditional fundraiser. Together with former Maplewood mayor Fred Profeta and a team of volunteers, the organization set out to create a permanent source of support for nonprofits serving residents from Maplewood and South Orange.
Officially launched in 2023, the community foundation operates through an endowment model, investing donations and using the returns to fund grants for local organizations year after year.
“This model creates something sustainable for the community,” Ostmann said. “The more the foundation grows, the more we can give back every single year.”
Since its founding, The Maplewood Foundation has awarded more than $212,000 in grants to support 29 programs focused on education, youth recreation, the arts, emergency relief, environmental stewardship, disabilities support, and food insecurity.
“Making a donation to a foundation like ours provides ongoing financial support for local nonprofits to meet the changing needs of the community,” said Profeta. “It also shows their volunteers, who work so hard for all of us, that the community values their immeasurable contribution of time and energy.”
Among the organizations supported are MEND, SOPAC, Girls on the Run New Jersey East, and local nonprofit Rent Party, whose Backpack Pals program discreetly sends nutritious weekend meals home with students facing food insecurity.
The foundation has also helped newer nonprofits take root, including Together We Bloom, which creates more inclusive experiences at community events through sensory-friendly spaces and accessibility resources.
Entirely volunteer-driven aside from one staff member and a fundraising consultant, The Maplewood Foundation is now working toward a major milestone: raising enough funds to permanently provide at least $100,000 in grants annually. Grant applications for nonprofits open June 1 and close September 1, while the organization’s “All for One” campaign encourages residents throughout Maplewood and South Orange to contribute, proving that even small donations can create a lasting impact for generations to come.

Livingston Symphony Orchestra Concert: “Pictures”
CClassical music can evoke images or tell stories for listeners. Works of art can also “speak” to viewers who look upon them and often inspire musical compositions. Maestro Anthony LaGruth and the multigenerational Livingston Symphony Orchestra draw upon these ideas in their live concert “Pictures.”
The program begins with American composer Stephen Paulus’ “Voices from the Gallery”, a narrated work that projects slide images of familiar paintings while speculating what the subjects in them are thinking or trying to say. Next, SaintSaens depicts the legendary dance of death with a devilish violin soloist and skeletal xylophone playing in his popular “Danse Macabre.”
Finally, in the powerful “Pictures in an Exhibition,” the audience and the composer, Mussorgsky, take a walk through a gallery of paintings that honor his recently departed dear friend, culminating in the majestic “Great Gate of Kiev.”

White-Glove Service
Helping Buyers and Sellers
Move into Their Next Chapters
BY SUE BALDANI
FFrom owning her own sports and entertainment firm to now being a realtor with Christie’s International Real Estate Group, Aryana Oveissi knows all about marketing. “If you’re great at sales, you can sell anything, but real estate’s so much more than that because you’re changing people’s lives,” she says. “At first, I knew it would be a career I’d be passionate about and a great way to make a living, but that all fell to the wayside. I’m impacting people’s lives, and there’s so much reward in that.”
Growing up in New Jersey, she’s very familiar with many of the wonderful towns from Hoboken and Summit to Brick and beyond, and what they can offer. “I help people discover where they’re going to live, and clients call me years later and say, ‘You introduced us to a town we never knew, or we’ve met people here who are now our best friends. Or, because of these schools, our kids became involved in sports and received scholarships.’ It’s just so gratifying.”
Partnering with Christie’s in 2017 was also the right move for Aryana. “It’s synonymous with luxury, prestige, and value, and that was a branding strategy that was very important to me because I come from a branding and advertising background. Christie’s is an international brand recognized globally for providing white-glove service.”
However, she’s happy to represent homes across all demographics. “Everyone deserves the same white-glove service,” says Aryana. “It doesn’t matter if their house is worth $3 million or $300,000. They should still have the same agent show up and be excited, and have access to the best cutting-edge technology.”
That work includes not only managing expectations, but also managing stress. “I never want my clients to see me sweat or know that the deal may be on the verge of collapsing, because that’s my job to navigate that,” she says. “I let them focus on the fun of their next chapter.”

The Stewards of Summit
Two neighbors built the home management service that their neighbors told them they needed
AAsk anyone who owns a home in Summit how they found their handyman or the person they trust to look at a leaky pipe before it becomes something worse. The answer is almost always the same: trial and error, a neighbor’s recommendation, calling three contractors who never responded, or one who couldn’t start until months later.
And that’s for the bigger jobs. The smaller ones are often worse.
“Try finding someone to hang a few pictures or adjust a closet door,” says Sebastian Mader, who lives in Summit. “A general contractor doesn’t want anything to do with it, and it’s often too small for a handyman. So, the pictures sit in your closet for six months. You can afford to do it, you want to do it, but nobody’s interested.”
The two founders bring complementary backgrounds. Kruse has spent his career in operations and technology leadership at NYC startups. Mader, a German-born professional photographer (sebastianmader.com) specializing in luxury goods, brings a trained eye that shapes how every visit is documented.
Co-founder Kory Kruse lives just down the road. Both are Summit residents. Their kids go to school here, and you might recognize them from the sideline at a weekend soccer game. That proximity is not incidental. It’s the whole point.
“We’re not a company from somewhere else that services this area,” Kruse says. “We live here. We know these streets, these homes, these people. That accountability is built into everything we do.”
The result is The Home Steward that officially launched this spring. They are a home management service built for homes and estates in Summit and adjacent communities. One trusted relationship for everything related to a home.
“Seb sees things most people walk past,” Kruse says. “A water stain that’s a little wider than last month. A piece of trim that’s shifted half an inch. That attention to detail is what this service is built on.”
The business operates across three service streams: subscription home management, project coordination, and Steward Away, a home watch service launching this summer. For project work, the firm partners exclusively with local contractors who apply and are vetted; tradespeople who’ve earned their reputation in this community, not whoever’s available.
The subscription plans are where most clients start. Every visit is documented with photographs and logged in a private
client portal, building a running health history of your home. That record catches problems early, before they become expensive.”
Most homeowners don’t find out something is wrong until it costs real money,” Kruse says.“A recurring visit catches the early signs. The subscription pays for itself the first time we find something you wouldn’t have seen.”
For families who leave Summit for extended stretches—whether it’s summers at the Shore, winters in Florida, or holidays abroad— the Away service handles the home while they’re gone. Weekly visits, system checks, mail, trash, emergency coordination, and more. A Home Health Summary with photos goes out before every return.
The service is owneroperated by design. Either Kruse or Mader is personally in every Away client’s home each week.
“When someone hands you the keys to their home, you don’t subcontract that out,” Kruse says. “That’s a personal trust. You earn it once and protect it.”
The Return Ready service, included with the top Away plan, handles the homecoming itself. Groceries stocked. HVAC set. Fresh flowers on the counter.
“We could grow faster by going broader,” Mader says. “But we’d rather be the most trusted name in one town than a regional operation in five.”

Where Financial Planning Becomes Personal
BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
FFinancial planning often begins with numbers. At Egan Wealth Advisors, it begins with people and relationships.
For more than three decades, the Madison-based practice founded by John M. Egan, CFP® has helped individuals, families, business owners, and professionals navigate life’s financial decisions with clarity and confidence. Built on long-term relationships, personalized service, and a fiduciary commitment to putting clients first, Egan Wealth Advisors is also affiliated with Hightower Advisors, one of the nation’s largest fiduciary wealth management and registered investment advisory practices. The team believes true planning goes far beyond investment management. It is about helping people make smart decisions through every stage of life.
The advisory team includes John M. Egan, CFP®, Patrick J. McCahill Jr., CFP®, and Sarah A. Melzer, CFP®. Together, they bring local insight, planning experience, and a focus on lasting trust.
A key advantage for clients is that all advisors at Egan Wealth Advisors hold the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® designation. A CFP® is trained in retirement, taxes, insurance, estate planning, and ethics. Combined with the practice’s fiduciary standard, that means advice is built around clients’ best interests and guidance people can understand.
Patrick J. McCahill, Jr, CFP® and Sarah A. Melzer, CFP®
“We really act as the quarterback of the plan,” says Patrick J. McCahill Jr., CFP®. “There are many moving parts in a financial life. Our role is to help coordinate those pieces and make sure everything is working together.”
The team specializes in comprehensive planning, including investments, tax planning, estate planning, insurance planning, Social Security strategies, Medicare guidance, and retirement income planning. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all solutions, advisors tailor recommendations to each person’s goals, concerns, and stage of life.
“Every client is different,” says McCahill. “Different risk tolerance, different needs, different priorities. Listening is one of the most important parts of our job. Once we understand what someone is trying to accomplish, we can build a thoughtful plan around that.”
That can look very different depending on the situation. A younger professional may need help building a foundation through retirement savings, budgeting, and family protection planning. Someone nearing retirement may need a roadmap for turning years of savings into dependable income while managing taxes and healthcare costs.
Healthcare planning has become an especially important part of the conversation. Many people underestimate the cost of Medicare, supplemental insurance, and longterm care needs in retirement. Egan Wealth Advisors helps clients prepare early, reducing surprises later.
The practice is also known for its high-touch service model. Clients are not handed off to a call center or shuffled between departments. Instead, they work with a small, experienced local team that values accessibility and communication. Regular meetings, phone calls, and market updates help them stay informed and connected year-round.
Every client is different. Different risk tolerance, different needs, different priorities. Listening is one of the most important parts of our job. Once we understand what someone is trying to accomplish, we can build a thoughtful plan around that.

Sarah A. Melzer, CFP® and Patrick J. McCahill, Jr., CFP®
“We want people to know we’re here when they need us,” McCahill says. “Whether markets are volatile, retirement is approaching, or life suddenly changes, we want to be a resource they can count on.”
That guidance is often where the practice’s value becomes most meaningful. A widow navigating finances for the first time, a family receiving an inheritance, a business owner preparing an exit strategy, or a couple unsure when to claim Social Security may all need more than investment advice. They need a steady hand and clear direction.
The practice’s roots in the community strengthen that trust. Team members live locally, remain active in civic organizations, and understand the priorities of the families they serve.
At its core, Egan Wealth Advisors believes financial planning should bring confidence, not confusion. It should replace uncertainty with a strategy and turn major life decisions into manageable steps.
“People do better when they have a plan,” says McCahill. “Our goal is to help clients feel organized, prepared, and confident about where they’re headed.”
At Egan Wealth Advisors, financial planning is not just about money. It is personal.

A Seasonal Reset: Women’s Health Check-Ins Matter Before Summer
AAs spring unfolds and calendars begin filling with graduations, vacations, and outdoor plans, many women focus on preparing their homes, wardrobes, and schedules for summer. Yet one important area is often overlooked: personal health check-ins. Late spring is an ideal time for women to pause, assess how they’re feeling, and prioritize preventive care before the pace of summer accelerates.
Women’s bodies are constantly evolving, influenced by hormones, stress, sleep, nutrition, and life stage. A presummer check-in doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It can start with scheduling routine appointments—annual physicals, gynecological exams, skin checks, and any age-appropriate screenings. Addressing these now helps avoid postponing care once summer routines become more hectic.
Energy levels and mental well-being also deserve attention. Many women carry lingering fatigue from winter, often compounded by stress and poor sleep. Checking in with yourself—Are you rested? Overextended? Experiencing changes in mood or focus?—can offer valuable insight. Small adjustments such as improved sleep habits, movement, or stress management can significantly impact overall wellness.
Nutrition and movement naturally shift in warmer months. This is a good time to reassess eating patterns, hydration, and physical activity. Rather than focusing on appearance-driven goals, lifestyle experts encourage women to focus on strength, stamina, and feeling well in their bodies.
Perhaps most importantly, health check-ins are about self-advocacy. Paying attention to subtle changes, asking questions, and trusting your instincts helps ensure concerns are addressed early.
As summer approaches, a thoughtful health reset offers peace of mind—and the freedom to fully enjoy the season ahead feeling strong, informed, and supported.

For Dr. Raminder Parihar, neurologist and principal investigator at The Cognitive and Research Center of New Jersey (The CRCNJ), the impact of this illness is deeply personal. She has witnessed the emotional toll it takes on families and the helplessness that comes with watching a loved one decline.
At The CRCNJ, Dr. Parihar leads clinical trials aimed at advancing treatments for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Conditions once considered rare, she notes, are becoming increasingly common, making dedicated research more critical than ever.
Despite the growing prevalence of cognitive disorders, brain health is often overlooked, especially among adults over 55. “We offer a no-cost memory screening as a first step,” Dr. Parihar explains. “It helps us determine whether someone may be developing early

issues in memory or cognitive thinking that could potentially lead to Alzheimer’s. Based on those results, they may qualify for one of our clinical trials.”
For those who enter a study, the screening process becomes empowering. Participants receive a comprehensive medical evaluation, at no cost, which may include diagnostic tools not available to the public.
“We can be that first stepping stone,” she says. “There is still so much ground to cover, and what we learn through Alzheimer’s research can help future generations and bring us closer to a cure.”

All the World’s a Stage
JJust like a theatrical performance that eventually comes to an end, human life is temporary. What we choose to do with the one life we are given is entirely up to us. How do we leave the world better than we found it? To gain a glimpse into the stage we all perform on, I sat down this month with Scott Patteson, Director of Theatre Arts at Livingston High School. Scott and his Theater 1 and 2 classes will be expanding my children’s book and animated series into a stage production on June 15th at 7pm at the Livingston High School Auditorium—Free General Admission.
Barry Farber: Tell me about your background and how you got started.
Scott Patteson: I grew up in California’s Bay Area and first became involved in theatre around fifth grade. My passion for it really developed in high school. Our theatre program was fairly bare bones—nothing like what we have today at Livingston High School—but I loved seeing community productions and traveling into San Francisco to watch plays and musicals.
I knew I wanted to pursue theatre in college, but back then there weren’t the same coaching opportunities that students have today. I attended University of California, Los Angeles and majored in theatre. After graduating, I earned my Master’s degree in acting from a graduate acting program in San Diego that’s often considered one of the West Coast equivalents of New York University in terms of professional actor training.
After graduate school, I returned to Los Angeles where I worked with an agent and manager, auditioning for various projects. I did that for several years, but eventually realized I had fallen out of love with the art form once it became more about networking, branding, and selling myself. That part of the industry just wasn’t fulfilling to me.
Around that time, I met my now-husband in Los Angeles. As we became more serious about building a family and creating stability, we moved to New York City because he was working for Howard Stern. I began teaching at a charter school in Manhattan while earning my teaching certification at night.
Then COVID happened. We moved to the suburbs, and two weeks later I was offered the position at Livingston High School. It all felt very serendipitous.
BF: What was it like when you first arrived at Livingston High School?
SP: When I came to the school, there wasn’t yet a formalized theatre program with consistent leadership. Different directors and English teachers would oversee productions, but there wasn’t a long-term structure in place.
At the same time, Livingston has a rich theatrical history. Alumni include Jason Alexander, Nikki James, and Leslie Kritzer—all incredibly successful performers. So there absolutely was a foundation here, but the goal became creating continuity and elevating the department into a more comprehensive and sustainable program. That’s what we’ve been building over the last six years.
BF: What drives your passion to work with these students every day?
SP: It’s the best job in the world. I get to collaborate, create, and explore performance with students every single day. It’s not just about acting—I’m able to expose them to all the different components that go into this art form. We have fun while also exploring what it means to be alive. There’s a deeper purpose to it for me, and I honestly can’t imagine teaching anything else. I love it.
BF: Tell me about the skills you’re teaching and how they apply not only to the stage, but also to life.
SP: There are certainly technical and performance-based skills that give students purpose and ownership, but the most valuable lessons are often the soft skills they develop through collaboration.
Theatre teaches creative thinking, flexibility, critical thinking, improvisation, teamwork, and problem-solving. At its core, theatre is really about collaboration and solving problems together—and those are skills students will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
In fact, some of the top business schools in the country, including Stanford University and Yale University, have incorporated improvisation into their curriculums because it teaches people how to build on one another’s ideas, stay present, think creatively, and adapt quickly.
These skills are incredibly transferable. Storytelling and confidence are essential in every profession.
I always tell my students: your power is your authenticity. For a long time, I struggled with my own authenticity, and theatre became the one space where I could truly express myself freely and feel accepted. In today’s world—especially with social media—authenticity becomes part of your identity and your personal brand. Whatever makes you uniquely you should be celebrated, not hidden. Theatre gives students the freedom to do exactly that.
BF: I’d like to thank you for allowing me to meet your students and observe parts of the creative and casting process to see what’s truly involved.
Tell me about your vision for the production of The Adventures of Little Billy: In Search of the Magic Tree and what audiences can expect from the show.
SP: From the beginning, we discussed creating something simple and minimalist—a production that could easily travel to elementary and middle schools because the themes and values in the story are so important. We want as many young people as possible to experience it.
One creative solution we developed involves five large black cubes that can be painted differently on each side and rotated to create new scenes and environments throughout the show. It becomes both a practical and artistic challenge: How many sides can we use? When do we rotate them? Can they be stacked to create entirely new settings? It’s creative problem-solving while also keeping the production portable.
Because this is a children’s production, we’re also incorporating hand puppets for some of the characters. Puppetry immediately evokes children’s theatre and gives audiences another visual layer to engage with. It helps younger viewers connect with the characters and the storytelling.
What makes this project especially exciting is that we’re adapting a local author’s children’s book into a world premiere stage production. That’s a unique opportunity for students.
The students are incredibly excited, and everyone has an important role to play—whether they are actors, designers, stage managers, assistant directors, or publicists. Everyone is contributing creatively, and we’re excited to share the production with the community on June 15th at 7pm in the Livingston High School auditorium.
BF: What is your definition of success?
SP: I’m a Scout, and one of the core principles of scouting is to leave a place better than you found it. That has become my philosophy in life as well: leave your community better than you found it, and leave the world better than you found it.
As I get older, I think more about legacy— about the impact we leave behind and how people will remember us. Success, to me, is making a positive difference in the lives of others and improving the world around you in some meaningful way.
If you can do that, then you’ve truly been successful.

Meet the Red Kiwi
Everyone’s Talking About!
WWhile spring may be a season of fresh starts, your reset doesn’t have to include a closet clean-out or juice cleanse. Sometimes the easiest upgrade is simply adding something new, fresh and unexpectedly delicious to your plate—and when something as unique and exciting as a red kiwi hits stores, it’s the kind of spring discovery you have to try.
Enter Zespri RubyRed Kiwifruit, the berrysweet seasonal fruit dietitians are already excited about, and one you’ll only find in stores for a limited time this spring.
With its naturally vibrant ruby-red center and sweet flavor that tastes like a cross between a kiwi and berries, it’s quickly becoming one of the most talked-about fruits in the produce aisle. Beyond its striking color, it delivers antioxidant vitamin C along with anthocyanins— the beneficial plant nutrients that naturally give red fruits their signature hue.
Plus, it makes it easy for families to add more whole-fruit nutrition to everyday routines. Naturally sweet and simple to prepare, it’s a kid-friendly snack parents can feel good about serving on its own or adding to breakfast bowls, lunchboxes and quick spring recipes.
Registered dietitian Lauren Manaker said it’s exactly the kind of simple upgrade people are looking for this time of year.
“I love recommending foods that make healthy choices feel effortless, and Zespri RubyRed Kiwifruit is a great example,” Manaker said. “It’s naturally sweet,
visually beautiful and a nutrient-dense fruit that delivers antioxidant vitamin C in every bite. Adding foods like kiwi to your routine is an easy—and delicious—way to boost the overall nutritional quality of your day.”
Forget restrictive resets. Adding one colorful, crave-worthy fruit to your routine can be a smarter—and more enjoyable— place to start.
Simple Ways to Enjoy Kiwi This Spring Easy to enjoy on its own – just slice and scoop – RubyRed Kiwifruit also makes everyday meals a little more special.
For a quick breakfast or snack, try layering sliced kiwi into a yogurt parfait with Greek yogurt and granola. The berry-sweet flavor pairs perfectly with creamy textures and adds a refreshing seasonal twist.
Or finish a warm spring day with Red Kiwi Ice Pops. Blended with fruit juice and frozen with fresh slices of kiwi, they’re simple, colorful treats that feel just as fun for adults as they do for kids.
A Seasonal Find Worth Grabbing
While You Can
Part of the excitement: it isn’t around for long. This limited-time seasonal fruit is available in stores nationwide through May, so it’s one you’ll want to grab while you can.
