South Orange Resident’s Journey Becomes a Book
Maplewood Musician’s Band Launches New Album
Joanne and Ira Black at Khecheopalri Lake in Sikkim, the wish-fulfilling lake, standing in front of prayer flags.
S
outh Orange resident Joanne Flynn Black never planned to become an author. After leaving her corporate job at Deloitte, she set out on a sixmonth trip around the world, inviting Ira Black, a man she had met on a red-eye flight eight years earlier, later dated, briefly separated from, and eventually married after returning home, to join her. Together they traveled through Japan, Bhutan, India, Lithuania, Russia, Spain, Thailand, Morocco and Italy among other countries, collecting unforgettable stories along the way. When she returned home, Joanne discovered Women Who Write, where encouragement from fellow writers helped her turn those experiences into her first book, In Motion: Around the World in Love and Heartbreak. Published in 2024 by Highlander Press, the memoir captures travel, love, heartbreak and the courage to begin again. It is available wherever books are sold.

M
aplewood musician Nat Grauman and his band, Future Hero, recently celebrated the release of their first full album, Burn the Boat, with a packed album launch show at the SOMA Elks Club. The 10-song album blends folk-pop, Americana, alt-country and yacht-rock influences, with songs exploring personal growth, change, resilience, and the pursuit of reinvention. Grauman, the lead singer, came to performing later in life after years managing and booking bands in Louisville. What began with open mics and cover gigs eventually grew into original songwriting. “I feel really proud of it,” Grauman said, adding that he is especially grateful to his bandmates. “They are such amazing players.” Burn the Boat is available on all streaming platforms. That question sparked a 400-mile, human-powered expedition in which students kayaked, cycled, and hiked from the river’s source to the sea while conducting environmental research. Through the nonprofit arm of his organization, Carabiner Collective, Morrissey has raised more than $200,000 to provide life-changing experiences for low-income students. Greg Morrissey, founder of Mountain Goat Movement, inspires confidence, purpose, and curiosity through transformative outdoor experiences.
Millburn resident Greg Morrissey believes some of life’s most important lessons can’t be taught from behind a desk. Through his organization, Mountain Goat Movement, he is helping students discover confidence, purpose, and curiosity while hiking mountains, kayaking rivers, and exploring the world around them.
“We’re using adventure as a vehicle for education,” Morrissey explains. “The outdoors attracts students, but the real goal is helping them build confidence, develop character, and discover what excites them.” One memorable program began when a student asked whether it was possible to have an adventure along
For Morrissey, the mission remains simple: to show young people that learning can be transformative, meaningful, and adventurous. “We want students to realize they are capable of more than they think,” he says. “Sometimes all they need is an opportunity to discover it.” For more information, visit: mountaingoatmovement.com
A former literature teacher at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, Morrissey spent a decade teaching before realizing that many students thrive through handson experiences rather than traditional classroom settings. Drawing on his own lifelong love of adventure, he founded Mountain Goat Movement to provide immersive educational experiences that blend outdoor exploration, academic learning, character development, and mentorship. Today, Morrissey partners with schools across the country to create customized programs inspired by students’ interests and passions. From studying regenerative agriculture on a California ranch to examining environmental conservation efforts in Florida, each experience is designed to encourage curiosity while fostering critical life skills. 10 | Vicinity Magazine | Summer 2026

Lifelong Commitment to Community Makes Summit Stronger
S
Some people volunteer when they have extra time. Melanie Wilson has built a life around finding meaningful ways to contribute. Through education advocacy, community theater, library initiatives, food insecurity programs, and mentoring women entrepreneurs, she has spent decades using her talents to strengthen the community she loves. A Summit resident for more than 32 years, Wilson first became deeply involved in volunteer work while raising her children. What began as a way to stay connected to their schools soon evolved into a lifelong commitment to community service. She led Speak Up Summit, a public education advocacy organization, for 12 years and helped raise funds for Summit High School athletics through the Booster Club. She also supported the high school’s theater productions and speech and debate programs, helping create opportunities for students to succeed.
Pictured (l-r): Scott Wilson (husband), Amanda Haugen (daughter), Lina Haugen (granddaughter), Carly Wilson (daughter), Melanie Wilson, and Matt Wilson (son).
Today, Wilson continues to make an impact through several organizations throughout Summit. She serves as Director of Marketing for Vivid Stage, a professional nonprofit theater company, where she promotes productions and creates special events designed to bring new audiences to the arts.
She recently assumed the role of president of the Friends of the Summit Free Public Library, helping support programs ranging from children’s activities and author talks to the library’s innovative “Library of Things,” which allows residents to borrow items such as tools, musical instruments, hotspots, and museum passes. Wilson also volunteers with GRACE, Summit’s community food pantry, where she assists with marketing and storytelling efforts to help advance the organization’s mission. In addition, she leads a local chapter of the networking organization BIG, supporting women entrepreneurs and business owners. Professionally, Wilson combines her love of writing with her desire to help others through her business, where she coaches and ghostwrites for women entrepreneurs, helping them uncover and share the stories that make them unique. “Finding out where you can use your strengths to help organizations that you care about move forward is very compelling,” Wilson says.

Féminin Pluriel, a solo exhibition by Québec-based artist Pascale Bouchard, highlights his distinctive encaustic practice, in which pigmented beeswax and heat are used to create richly textured works of art. Rooted in themes of transformation, memory, and the symbolic power of the feminine, her work draws deeply from floral imagery and organic forms, evoking both the fragility and resilience of the natural world. A curated selection of artist-designed objects and garments inspired by the Féminin Pluriel series will be available for purchase, and a live demonstration of Bouchard’s encaustic technique will be scheduled this fall at the Arboretum. Animal Sculptures by Wendy Klemperer
D
Discover the striking animal sculptures of Wendy Klemperer. Created by the Brooklyn-based artist, Klemperer’s sculptures utilize plasma-cut reclaimed steel and masterful craftsmanship to bring the natural world vividly to life. This installation features a series of six fox silhouettes, serving as a tribute to the native wildlife that calls our region home. In the artist’s words, “The imagery that pervades my work reflects a lifelong fascination with animals. To make the largescale sculptures I search scrap yards for industrial refuse ravaged by usage and demolition. Bent and twisted, such pieces contain energy and potential new life. My welding process is a kind of three-dimensional gesture drawing. A network of steel lines builds a skeletal form containing both presence and absence. I investigate the body language of animals to express a feeling or state of being, with motion conveying emotion. Focusing on the animal realm seems no less important to me than on that of humans- observing the continuity between all forms of life on earth.” www. wendyklemperer.com / @wendyklemperer Through October 31, Tuesday–Sunday, 10am–4pm Reeves-Reed Arboretum 165 Hobart Avenue, Summit 908-273-8787 / https://www.reeves-reedarboretum.org Summer 2026 | MyVicinityMagazine.com | 15

THE ART OF RESTORATION: Dr. Scott Spiro’s Customized Approach to Body Contouring after Major Weight Loss
M
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
MEET DR. SPIRO CELEBRATING 30 YEARS IN PRACTICE, DR. SCOTT A. SPIRO HAS BUILT A REPUTATION THAT EXTENDS FAR BEYOND NEW JERSEY. PATIENTS FROM ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND AROUND THE WORLD SEEK HIM OUT FOR HIS HIGHLY PERSONALIZED CARE AND HIS ABILITY TO BLEND SURGICAL PRECISION WITH A UNIQUE ARTISTIC VISION.
FOR DR. SPIRO, SUCCESSFUL PLASTIC SURGERY BEGINS WITH UNDERSTANDING EACH PATIENT’S GOALS, CONCERNS, AND ANATOMY. AS AN ACCOMPLISHED ARTIST OUTSIDE THE OPERATING ROOM, HE APPROACHES EVERY PROCEDURE WITH A FOCUS ON BALANCE, PROPORTION, AND NATURAL-LOOKING RESULTS. RATHER THAN CONCENTRATING SOLELY ON A SINGLE CONCERN, HE EVALUATES HOW DIFFERENT AREAS WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE OUTCOMES TAILORED TO EACH INDIVIDUAL PATIENT. 20 | Vicinity Magazine | Summer 2026
RESTORING SHAPE AND PROPORTION THROUGH CUSTOMIZED BODY CONTOURING Following significant weight loss, pregnancy, aging, or changes associated with GLP-1-assisted weight loss, many patients find that excess skin and tissue laxity remain despite their hard work and healthy lifestyle choices. For some, it can be frustrating to achieve their goals on the scale yet still feel limited by loose skin or changes in body contour that cannot be improved through diet and exercise alone. “Patients often put tremendous effort into improving their health,” says Dr. Spiro. “Body contouring procedures can help them feel more comfortable and satisfied with their hard work and commitment.” Common concerns often include loose skin on the upper arms, excess tissue around the bra line, upper back laxity, and changes in breast shape and position. With 30 years of experience and technical expertise, Dr. Spiro can combine multiple procedures in a safe manner to elevate overall aesthetic outcomes.
For instance, Dr. Spiro’s unique combination of being an artist and expertise allows him to address arm lifts, back and bra line lifts, breast lifts, and even reverse tummy tucks in a single procedure. Another procedure for which Dr. Spiro is well known is the mid-body lift, which combines a tummy tuck with thigh, hip, and buttock lifting while using excess skin and fat from the hips to create a fuller, rounder buttock contour. “The best body contouring results occur when the entire torso is assessed, not just the area the patient initially notices,” says Dr. Spiro. Dr. Spiro sees himself as a modern-day Michelangelo. While a patient may see unwanted skin and laxity, Dr. Spiro, like Michelangelo, sees a block of stone ready to become the next living sculpture. Each one unique, with an opportunity to achieve artistic excellence. His emphasis remains on long-term outcomes that allow patients to enjoy everyday activities without focusing on the areas that once bothered them.
XERF: A NON-SURGICAL OPTION FOR SKIN TIGHTENING Spiro Plastic Surgery not only offers surgical options for laxity. While some patients benefit most from surgery, others may be candidates for nonsurgical treatments designed to improve skin quality and firmness. For individuals experiencing mild to moderate skin laxity or those looking to maintain their surgical results, Dr. Spiro’s practice offers XERF, an advanced radiofrequency treatment performed by Nurse Practitioner Mikayla Barbarossa. XERF stimulates collagen production to tighten skin and improve tissue quality with minimal downtime. It may be appropriate for patients who are not ready for surgery, want to address early signs of skin laxity, or are interested in proactive collagen stimulation.
22 | Vicinity Magazine | Summer 2026
When used alongside surgery, XERF can enhance skin quality and help optimize long-term outcomes. When incorporated into a patient’s overall treatment plan, it reflects Dr. Spiro’s philosophy that aesthetic care should be individualized and thoughtfully designed around each patient’s needs. The practice also offers Plated™ skincare, the first and only skincare line powered by shelf-stable, plateletderived exosomes. Exosomes are designed to support collagen and elastin production while improving overall skin quality. These advanced formulations can complement both surgical and non-surgical treatment plans as part of a comprehensive approach to skin health.
THE ART BEHIND THE OUTCOME At the heart of Dr. Spiro’s approach is the belief that no two patients are alike. Whether performing surgery or recommending a non-surgical option, he believes the best outcomes come from listening carefully and developing a treatment plan that aligns with each patient’s goals and lifestyle. “There is nothing more gratifying than impactful contributions to the overall health and well-being of patients,” says Dr. Spiro. Is Manual Lymph Drainage the Missing Link to Better Health and Faster Healing?
M
allergies and sinus congestion • Support those with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue • Improve the appearance of cellulite and skin tone • Promote relaxation, vitality, and overall wellness
Most people are familiar with the circulatory system, but few realize the vital role the lymphatic system plays in overall health, immunity, and healing. When the lymphatic system slows down, the body can struggle with inflammation, swelling, fatigue, and slow recovery.
Many feel lighter, more energized, and refreshed after treatment. Athletes use MLD for recovery, while others seek it for anti-aging, skin health, and well-being. If you’re feeling tired, swollen, or want to boost your health and appearance, Manual Lymph Drainage may be worth exploring.
Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a gentle therapy that stimulates lymph flow through the body’s natural drainage pathways. Unlike traditional massage, MLD targets the lymphatic system just beneath the skin, helping eliminate waste, excess fluid, and toxins. MLD is highly recommended before and after surgical procedures—especially cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction, tummy tucks, facelifts, and breast surgeries. By reducing swelling, bruising, and fibrosis (scar tissue formation), MLD can dramatically accelerate healing. Some studies suggest that recovery
timelines that once stretched to 18 months may be reduced to as little as six weeks with proper lymphatic support. Beyond post-surgical care, MLD may help: • Reduce swelling and inflammation • Strengthen immune function • Improve circulation and detoxification • Relieve symptoms associated with

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Healthy After 50:
Essential Screenings for Men
T
Turning 50 is an important milestone and an ideal time to take an active approach to health. While aging brings natural changes, regular screenings can help identify potential concerns early and support sustained health. Heart health should be a top priority. Routine monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels can help reduce the risk of heart disease, which remains a leading health concern for men. Colorectal cancer screening is a further vital preventive measure. Current guidelines generally recommend screening for most adults beginning at age 45. Early detection greatly improves treatment results and can even prevent cancer from developing.
Men over 50 should also discuss prostate health with their health-care providers. Screening decisions should be adapted to individual risk factors, family history, and personal preferences. Vision and hearing exams become increasingly important with age. Detecting changes early can help preserve quality of life, independence, and safety. Bone health is often overlooked among men. Screening for osteoporosis may be recommended for those with certain risk factors, helping reduce the likelihood of fractures later in life. Vaccinations are another key component of healthy aging. Keeping up to date on flu, shingles, pneumonia, and other recommended vaccines can help prevent serious illness.
Finally, don’t underestimate the benefit of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, quality sleep, and stress management all contribute to healthy aging. With routine screenings and healthy habits, men can enjoy greater vitality and independence beyond age 50. Talk with your healthcare provider about the screenings and habits that matter most for you.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Road Trip Without the Back Pain
L
Long drives are hard on the back. To protect yourself, the most effective strategy is to fight static posture. Our spines thrive on movement, so stop and stretch every 60-90 minutes. Adjust your seat and use support, and plan timely pit stops to reduce pain.
Shift frequently- Shift your weight from side to side to keep spinal fluids moving.
In the driver’s seat, watch angles- Set the seat angle to about 100 degrees to lower pressure on discs. Adjust the height so your hips are at or slightly above your knees.
Use heat or ice- Bring reusable ice packs in your cooler to reduce inflammation and bring a plug-in moist heat pad to relax tense muscles.
Bring the wheel to you- Set the steering wheel so your elbows are bent slightly. This prevents over-reach and slouching.
Taking these steps will thwart most of the pain a long drive can cause. If you’re dealing with a pre-existing back injury, it’s important to make a driving plan to avoid aggravating your condition.
Support your lower back- The curve of the spine lacks support in car seats. Use a car-specific back support, a rolled-up sweatshirt, or a towel behind the small of the back.
Dr. Jeannine Baer
Remove your wallet- Sitting on a thick wallet twists your pelvis and strains muscles.
Get out and move- Take a 5-10 minute walk every hour and do gentle knee-tochest stretches to improve posture.

Elevate Summer Hosting with Health in Mind Easy Apps, Meals and Sides Made with Fresh, Juicy Grapes
O
Once temperatures climb, summer entertaining tends to look a little different. Heavy comfort foods give way to lighter fare, tables move outdoors and hosts are on the hunt for dishes that feel effortless without sacrificing flavor. It’s a season for skewers, salads and small bites that are easily shared on a patio among friends and loved ones. Fresh ingredients, simple preparation and naturally hydrating foods can be the staples of your next summer soiree, especially when your goal is to spend less time in the kitchen and more time at the table with guests. Crisp, juicy, colorful Grapes from California are a natural fit as their sweetness can brighten savory dishes while balancing salty, smoky flavors off the grill. With little preparation, grapes are a perfect snack while waiting for the main course; no peeling, slicing or complicated prep required. A quick rinse is all it takes to serve fresh grapes as an easy addition to snack trays or lastminute appetizers. Tasty fuels healthy and healthy makes happy, which is why grapes, a natural source of antioxidants and other polyphenols and a good source of vitamin K, make for a delicious accompaniment to usual summer fare. Serve them on their own for a hydrating
snack thanks to their high water content, or take advantage of their combination of flavor, convenience and nutrition as a key ingredient that elevates summer recipes.
Grape, Fennel and Citrus Salad
For example, Italian Sausage and California Grape Skewers can be the main attraction at barbecues and weekend gatherings, offering elegant presentation without spending hours in the kitchen. Paired with a California Grape Fennel and Citrus Salad, it’s a light, easy meal that can both impress and refresh.
2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil
While guests wait for the main course, California Grape, Walnut and Endive Bites combine a sweet crunch with savory blue cheese. Top with a drizzle of honey – or hot honey for a bit of heat – to complement lively conversation and the familiar relaxation of summer gatherings. In many ways, warm-weather entertaining is less about elaborate meals and more about fresh, approachable foods – like grapes – that help set the tone for a relaxing atmosphere, offering both a practical and elevated solution to make hosting a (summer) breeze. To discover more ways to both elevate and simplify gatherings throughout the season, visit GrapesFromCalifornia.com.

DIAMOND MINDS
Stay
HUNGRY
I
I was recently talking with a friend about the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs when he made an interesting observation. He said the Spurs could win a championship because they’re still hungry. They have something to prove. They’re chasing a goal they haven’t yet achieved. The Knicks, on the other hand, might not be as hungry after winning a title because they already have the ring. Whether his prediction proves true remains to be seen, but it raises an important question: What happens when we stop being hungry? In sports, business, and life, hunger is often the difference between growth and stagnation. It fuels effort, persistence, and resilience. The danger is that success can sometimes create complacency—and complacency is the silent killer of potential. Over the last several months, I was immersed in the high school production of The Adventures of Little Billy: In Search of the Magic Tree. Like creating the book and animated series before it, the experience reminded me of a lesson I’ve learned throughout my career: The joy is not in arriving. The joy is in pursuing. As Miguel de Cervantes wrote, “The road is much better than the inn.” The moment the curtain came down on the final performance, I felt grateful—but I also realized something else. To stay inspired and growing, there must always be another mountain to climb. Here are three ways to stay hungry:
1. Let Rejection Fuel You When pitching Little Billy to publishers, I received more than 30 rejection letters. I kept every one of them. They remind me that other people’s opinions are not the final verdict on your potential. Success celebrates what we know. Failure teaches us what we need to learn.
2. Set Bigger Goals The day after the play ended, I wrote down five new ambitious goals. Why? Because challenge creates growth. I’ve often said, “The work will teach you how to do it.” Growth requires motion, and motion requires purpose.
3. Stay Humble and Grateful Gratitude keeps success in perspective while humility keeps us learning. Watching children laugh, smile, and become fully engaged in the story on opening night reminded me why we pursue our dreams in the first place. As Dwayne Johnson said:“Be humble. Be hungry. And always be the hardest worker in the room.” That’s advice worth remembering. Stay humble. Stay grateful. And above all—stay hungry.
