Kent Place School Student Honored with National Award

T

he National WWII Museum in New Orleans has named local student Laura Mills, of Kent Place School, as a 2018 Billy Michal Student Leadership Award recipient. Laura has taken her love of history and created a website the past two years for the National History Day competition, demonstrating her passion for exploring how history shapes people, perspectives, and policies. The national honor is awarded annually to one student in each state who has maintained a strong record of volunteerism, demonstrates school and community activism, and helps implement creative solutions to recognized problems. The leadership award was created in honor of Billy Michal, who was a child living in Louisiana during World War II. At six years old, Michal helped his one-room school win a statewide scrap paper-collection contest during the war, proving that every citizen could contribute to victory. “It’s extremely gratifying to recognize students throughout the nation for the wonderful contributions they make to their local communities,” said Stephen J. Watson, President & CEO at The National WWII Museum.

A “Plan” for Any Future Plan Architecture Handles Both Residential & Commercial Projects By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

D

an D’Agostino likes to describe Plan Architecture, the firm he established in early 2014, as “fairly diverse,” designing both residential and commercial buildings. The 10-member firm (eight architects, an interior decorator and an administrator) is also state-of-the-art, using the latest computer software to create 3-D architectural models. At the same time, says D’Agostino, “We’re very relatable. When we work with our clients, we’re helping them think critically about what they need and what they want, which are not always the same thing.” He explains the Plan process: “The first time we meet with a residential client is generally a walk-through in their home, where we can really see what they want to do and ask relevant questions. Assuming the client decides that we are a good fit, we then look at local zoning codes for guidelines. Back at our office, we create a construction document, which turns the ideas into actual drawings.” The completion of the construction document does not mean the end of the firm’s involvement. D’Agostino notes, “We work fairly regularly with around 30 contractors who

Dan D’Agostino do the actual building of the project.” The project may be as large as a 260-unit apartment complex comprising four buildings and a parking structure, or as small as an addition to a front porch. Whatever the size or type, D’Agostino says, “We work at the client’s pace; we never want them to feel rushed.”

How to Care for Your Eyes as You Age

A

s we age, our bodies don’t perform as well as they once did, and vision is no exception. However, early detection and treatment of eye problems and diseases through an eye exam is the best way to protect your eyes and overall health. To help keep your eyes healthy for years to come, consider the following tips. • Eat an eye-healthy diet. Fruits and vegetables, especially carrots and dark leafy greens, provide a hefty punch of key vitamins and a key vision protectingsubstance called lutein. Find some new recipes to make filling up on these nutritious choices both delicious and fun. • Maintain a healthy weight. Did you know that by eating healthy portions, exercising regularly and doing your best to maintain a healthy weight, you can reduce your risk of cataracts? Conditions such as obesity and diabetes can lead to vision problems like cataracts. • Protect eyes from blue light. Most people today spend a lot of time in front of digital screens, such as smartphones, computers and televisions. These devices emit high-energy blue light, which causes digital eye strain that can lead to headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes and even neck pain. Ask your eye doctor about the best options to help reduce eye strain.

• Get an eye exam. A yearly eye exam is one of the easiest and most important ways to reduce your odds of vision loss and protect your eyes. And it can also help you monitor and protect your overall health. Whether or not you wear glasses, be sure to schedule this crucial appointment. A routine eye exam can help detect signs of serious health conditions, like diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure glaucoma and macular degeneration. Because more obvious symptoms of some health conditions don’t always appear until damage has already occurred, routine eye exams are a good way of keeping tabs on what’s happening in your body. • Make sure you have vision coverage. t’s time to welcome fresh air, enjoy outdoor barbecues and run around at the park with family and friends. While embracing these warm activities, you may also face the dreaded symptoms of allergies.

However, allergy season doesn’t have to keep you indoors. Pediatric health expert Dr. Tanya Altmann offers these tips to help manage and prevent common symptoms.

Avoid the allergy Avoid what you are allergic to as much as possible. If you are allergic to tree and grass pollens, limit your time outdoors. Consider taking part in activities without as much exposure to tree and grass pollen, such as gymnastics or swimming.

While exercise and playing outdoors are important (and fun), try to stay inside during the morning hours when pollen counts are typically at their highest, and instead opt for outdoor workouts and activities later in the day.

Protect your face Shield your eyes with sunglasses, keep your hair pulled back or wear a hat to prevent pollen from contacting your face.

Wash your pets Your pets are also vehicles for transporting pollen. Wash them after being outside so they don’t bring pollen into the house. Talk with your veterinarian regarding the best practices for pet washing.

Close windows Keep bedroom windows closed to prevent pollen from entering. If you love the fresh air, open non-bedroom windows in the afternoon or evening when pollen counts are lower, or opt for indoor fans and air conditioning.

Wash pollen off Bathe kids and change clothes after being outside to remove pollens from their hair, faces and clothing. Pollens are airborne and microscopic, so you can’t always see them. Wash hair at night to avoid sleeping in pollen.

Do your laundry Pollen can linger on clothing, so try to wash clothes after they’ve been worn, especially after outside play. Use laundry products that are made without dyes and perfumes, such as Clorox 2 Free & Clear Stain Remover & Color Booster. They’re gentle for people who have sensitive skin or allergies, but tough on stains when paired with detergent. Diamond Minds

The Lonely Game of

“Follow the Follower” By Barry Farber

Barry Farber

M

any of the greatest ideas, inventions, cures and successes are developed when an individual takes an approach which differs from that of leaders before him or her. Often, the key to success is breaking away from the pack and following what the heart and mind has to say. The problem is that sometimes people are afraid to be different because they want to be accepted by their family, friends and peers. For most, this begins at a young age. Children wear the same types of sneakers and dress the same way in order to avoid standing apart from the crowd.

“Excuse me,” said the shopkeeper, “but I’ve been watching you do this every morning, every day for four years now. Can you tell me why?” “Certainly,” said the man. “I’m the foreman down at the mill. I blow the quitting whistle at five o’clock every day, and I want to be sure that my people get out on time.” “You’re kidding me,” said the shopkeeper. “I’ve been setting my grandfather clock to your five o’clock whistle all these years!”

“I find that the very things that I get criticized for, which is usually being different and just doing my own thing and just being original, is the very thing that makes me successful.” — Shania Twain This trend even follows individuals into adulthood. When people get a new job, they first look around to make sure that they are doing the same things that their co-workers are doing. When they see that others are doing what is familiar to them, they feel more comfortable about their own behavior and actions. The problem, however, is that many people are losing out on a plethora of incredible opportunities. People should always be asking, “is the person I’m following going where I want to go?” Years ago, in a small store on Main Street, a shopkeeper placed a large grandfather clock in his front window. The next morning, he saw a man walk by, take out his pocket watch, adjust the watch, put it back in his pocket and walk away. Every morning for the next four years, the shopkeeper observed this morning ritual. Then, one morning the shopkeeper was out sweeping the sidewalk when the man passed by, took out his watch, adjusted it, and put it back in his pocket.

The funny thing is, they could have been off by days or weeks.

The shopkeeper and the mill foreman, like many people in today’s society, were caught up in a game called “follow the follower.” Instead of conducting their own investigation to find someone who truly has the qualities they wish to emulate, people tend to take on the group mentality. People want to be themselves, but they are afraid to be labeled as “different.” There is nothing inherently wrong with following. In fact, it is one of the most effective ways to learn. High achievers are constantly studying other people and their methods of accomplishment. The difference is that they are particular about the people from whom they choose to learn. They look for those whose values match their own and who have achieved excellence in their field. They surround themselves with models of success.

“When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. So what the hell, leap.” — Cynthia Heimel, writer and humorist
